We’re closeted at home with only immediate family, running only essential errands, and have lots of time. Some have learned to use new technology applications. Some are supporting small businesses. We’re getting reacquainted with our stoves/ovens. We introverts are thriving. We’ve practiced for this situation our whole lives. Extroverts – not so much. Wherever you find yourself on the line between sublime/crazy, know that you have friends from Beta Tau. We’re just a text or call away. And we have time! On behalf of Brenda and myself, I’d like to thank the chapter for your support of our new ideas and helping us to lead. A woman doesn’t stand alone in this group. Help is around every corner. I greatly appreciate it. I’m so looking forward to see what Jeannette & Myrna are planning for the next year. Knowing those two, it’ll be fun. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Personal antidote: While working traffic control at our church’s food bank on Thursday evening, a lady offered me a pair of gloves - the kind being used to avoid germs. Since I controlled how close I got to people and the fact that I touched nothing, I declined the offer. Then she asked if I needed hand sanitizer. “Actually, I do!” I replied. She gave me the pictured bottle. I went to the food bank to bless others. God touched me through this woman willing to share what she had. May I be as willing to share as this dear lady. I am blessed.

Stay Safe / Wash Hands / Stay Home
These are sayings we are hearing during these times of quarantine. Life has slowed down and I hope you are finding things to do during this time. I have found some new books to read on my kindle, do more Bible studies, try new recipes, working in the yard and still keeping up with my house cleaning, washing, teaching, and of course DKG. As of right now, we will not have any word about our convention till the deadline to sign up for the convention comes around. The deadline is May 15th. We will go ahead and plan for our convention until we hear otherwise.*** As soon as I hear, you will be notified. The same is true for our International Convention. If we cancel these events, we will loose a lot of money. We will just wait and see what our Executive boards decide. We are still several months out from our Area Workshop. We are still planning for this wonderful event. Let’s all sign up and get our money and lists of attendees in by June 1st. I am staying in contact with your presidents and will send out another article in May, even though most of you do not have a meeting during this month. I applaud the chapters who have held meetings via Zoom. This is a great way to stay connected. I did my first Zoom meeting with one of my students this week and it worked out great until she started playing with the camera. LOL May you stay safe and please let your president know if you need anything. As always, YOU are the KEY! Cathy Criner Area 6 Coordinator
***as of April 17, 2020 the TSO Convention was cancelled. See page 4 for details.

Off the Shelf – Book Reviews
Julie By Catherine Marshall
Review by Mary Hale
Reviewers Note: I have had Julie on my book-shelf for at least 20 years. When the stay-at-home orders came from our mayor and county judge, I dusted it off and began reading. I enjoyed every minute of the book. It has romance, tragedy, faith, suspense, and triumph over the forces of evil. It is Catherine Marshall’s own story in a lot of ways – her love of writing, her Christian faith, and her passion to help others shines through. Review: The Wallace family has just moved to the steel and flood-prone town of Alderton, PA. The year is 1934. Mr. Wallace has left the ministry to become Editor of the town’s weekly newspaper. Julie is a senior in high school and not very happy about moving. But she aims to make the most of it. Mr. Wallace tells his family that he needs their help keeping expenses down at the paper. Julie becomes the proofreader, writes some copy, and her younger brother and sister help with delivery. A new pastor, Spencer Meloy, was hired at Baker Memorial Church where the Wallace’s begin attending. After a flood rips up the low-lying area of Alderton where the steel mill workers live, Rev. Meloy enlists the teen-agers in town to canvas the area for needs. The group decides to fix up a Community Center where the immigrant women can meet to sew, socialize, and help each other. This doesn’t sit right with the older businessmen in the church who try to blackball the idea and Mr. Meloy. In the meantime, something is not right about the Kissawha Dam that is on the grounds of the Hunting and Fishing Club. Owners are very secretive about it. When the Editor asks for an engineer’s report on the dam’s safety, he is not given a straight answer. A friend of Julie’s gets a copy of the engineer’s report for the Editor. Turmoil ensues. Through it all, Julie comes into her own and realizes that faith and determination (to help others) will be her guide.
Austin and Commodore Perry By Texas Heritage Foundation
Review by Suzette Price
I am reading a book called "Austin and Commodore Perry" published in 1952 by the Texas Heritage Foundation. It is not very exciting, but I am slowly getting through it. I grew up in Austin, so it holds some interest for me. Under a section called Texas History Facts is this paragraph:
In 1918 and again in 1920, aided by the suffrage of the women, Miss Annie Webb announced for and was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction, thereby being the first woman to become a state official in Texas. She remained until her death as an able faculty member at the University of Texas in Austin.

Since many of us are sheltering in place, let’s check in with a few of our Beta Tau sisters and see what they have been up to over the past few weeks.
I have channeled my creative talents into baking bread. Trouble is that I have also been eating it!
-Marilyn Wienecke
I oiled my sewing machine and made a set of eight placemats for spring/summer that are reversible. I’ve also found that there are many substitutes for eggs in baking! I had no idea!! I was determined to use my bread machine that had been gathering dust. Well, the loaf with an egg substitute had a crust that was too hard to eat so in the trash it went and I intend to call Cuisinart for help when the virus thing is over! When I found I had no yeast for another kind of loaf I made beer bread. It’s so easy and delicious! This is a fun time to polish silver which I really enjoy doing - and at the same time go through some drawers sorting, discarding and creating a stack of things for donation when the time comes. Along with the sensible activities here, I’ve entered a coloring contest with my son, for a prize being a new power bike from the RAD Bike Company from Seattle. (He colors a lot better than I do so I’ll keep you posted!) Personal contacts are a blessing. I’ve connected with an endearing friend from Seattle whom I haven’t seen in five years. She and I began our friendship in the third grade and I’m not going to tell you how many years we’ve been friends! Thank you for letting me share with you. With sister love,
-Charlotte Hains
