Region VII is taking a departure from the recent convention projects that have focused on the specific needs of teachers, families, and children. This year we are attending to a need in our own state. We are asking for contributions to the NC DKG Headquarters Fund. As Headquarters contact, Mary Beth White, says, “All NC DKG mem-bers are beneficiaries of the work accomplished here.” In the last year, there has been the unex-pected expense of a new well and pump, and with a house the age of this one, there will continue to be routine and unexpected maintenance needs. As a centrally located site where officers and committees meet to work and plan goals for the state, Headquar-ters is invaluable to the ongoing success of our organization. Records, equipment and memorabilia are stored in this facility that belongs to all of us. In addi-tion, any chapter or group of members may reserve and use the building. All members are welcome!
Contributions are essential to maintaining this important facility. Financial gifts may be made as me-morials or in honor of someone. Checks (made out to NC DKG and designated for Headquarters Fund), as well as cash, will be collected throughout the week-end at the “Convention Project” Collection Station that will be located in the registration area. Please note that this is a contribution from your chapter beyond the $2.00 per member that is expected each year. During the Saturday business meeting, we will “Pass the House” as is customary for individuals to make personal donations. Our project will assist in keeping NC DKG Headquarters maintained, safe and professional. Region VII thanks you in advance for your chapter and your personal contributions.

“Serendipity - It is a DKG Thing!”
DKG’s Founders crafted its core values and goals that laid the foundation of the Society in 1929. Once a foundation was laid, it was time for pillars to be constructed. DKG members view the seven purposes as the “pillars” of the Society. But like all solid structures, there is a cornerstone of sorts. Purpose 1—“To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship”—is that cornerstone for DKG. Can you see how Purpose 1 and NC DKG Ready, Set, GROW! bring serendipitous mo-
ments into the lives of DKG members? Let me offer first-hand experiences that showcase this purpose while capturing Ready, Set, GROW!
Summer 2019: An NC DKG member volunteered to demonstrate the art of loom weaving at the DKG Arts & Humanities Conference in Asheville. When completed it was placed in the Marketplace for sale. The piece was priced to sell but plans had been made to auction if needed. In the end, the auction resulted in four times the amount for which it was originally marked; the recipient (a DKG member from TN) and the weaver have now become dear DKG sisters, and the Society benefited from the proceeds as the funds were donated to the DKG Emergency Fund.
Winter 2020: A badge order arrived in Region XI from a Region IV member. The recipient of the order noticed the name of the purchaser was the exact name of a person she taught with years ago but had not seen or heard from in ages. She was also scheduled to visit that person’s chapter in the next two weeks and, interestingly, the purchaser just became a member late last year. When the two connected it was like they were still standing at their old school.
Since last spring: My father was born in a small city in North Carolina . . . a city I had never been to until last spring. Now, not only have I visited the city, I have developed friendships with persons that are long-time residents of that city. These octogenarian women have taken me into their homes on numerous nights as my NC DKG responsibilities take me across this long state. This midway safe haven has been my home away from home, and their nurturing hospitality makes me ever thankful that they are in my life.
Serendipity is the phenomenon of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for. Purpose #1 though is just that purposeful. So, we do look for fellowship in DKG. But it is so much more. The examples above showcase how genuine spiritual fellowships can take us across state, regional and generational boundaries. If you take time to reflect upon moments in your DKG life when things happen that you cannot explain, chalk them up to Serendipity! It is a DKG thing!

“See How We GROW!” Chapter Showcase
NC DKG Second Vice-President & “See How We GROW!” State Initiative Liaison
Hilda Parlér
One of the objectives of the See How We GROW initiative is to showcase Ready, Set, GROW! accomplishments from chapters across the state. Strategies to achieve this objective include develop-ing creative programs and projects focused on GROW! and custom-izing those plans based on the chapter and member needs.
At the fall Executive Board meeting, chapters were challenged to create two items for the NC DKG Convention in May 2020. The first item is to design an original tri-fold display to showcase chapter GROW! accomplishments. The second item is to create one media slide that visually captures these GROW! successes.
Directions for creating and submitting a media slide using Google Slides are available on the See How We GROW! webpage. Click the text above the Ready, Set, GROW! sample tri-fold image. The slide will be due April 15, 2020. Please contact Hilda Parlér or Carol Bostian.
Excitement is in the air as the membership of NC DKG prepares to celebrate the many ways that members and chapters are GROWing. What a great way to share ideas and accomplishments with the members of NC DKG!

Summer Training for 2020-2022 Chapter Leaders
Chapters across North Carolina are electing new leaders for the 2020-2022 biennium. These new chapter leaders (presidents, treasurers, member-ship chairs, educational excellence chairs, and regional directors) need to plan now for the 2020 Summer Leaders’ Training. Leaders are encouraged to attend the Summer Leaders' Training session scheduled in their region. Session dates and locations include:
Friday, June 26 — Greensboro Saturday, June 27 — Wilson
Tuesday, June 30 — Black Mountain
It is extremely important that new leaders make plans to attend this valuable introduction to their role and responsibilities. Watch spring issues of Eta Data and the summer issue of NC DKG News for specific times, locations, and registration information.
DKG encourages chapters to implement projects and programs to enhance global awareness. These programs are identified as Global Projects. One such program is Schools for Africa but there are others. Another Global Project is the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are the blue-print to achieve a better and more sustainable fu-ture for all. The United Nations agenda is to have these achieved by 2030. They are a universal call to action to end poverty everywhere. The UN has four major campaigns: Climate, Gender, Water and Youth.
The SDGs, including a color wheel and 17 icons, are available for research on their website. Click the graphic (left) or use the link on the EEC Resources page of the NC DKG website.
The EEC Committee would love to see how chapters of NC DKG implement Global Projects. Take photos, create lessons, generate materials, and submit to the EEC Chair for inclusion on the NC DKG website EEC Resource page.

Acts of Kindness are part of each gathering of Alpha Theta Chapter (Region IX, Surry). In September, over 200 children’s books were collected and given to the Health Departments in Stokes and Surry counties. The December project was toys for the Salvation Army. Becky Keesler delivered over 40 new toys to Lt.
Lea Brooks. Another December event was the Annual Silent Auction, be-
gun years ago to provide our chapter’s share of the Headquarters purchase! It is now a great tradition bringing a boost to our budget so that we can reach out to our beginning teachers and supplement our grant-in-aid fund.

During the fall of 2019, Theta Chapter (Region IV, Brunswick, New Hanover, & Pender) awarded four $500 grants to area teachers. Theta’s grant funds allowed the chapter to award proposals that provided STEM materials for independent class-room work, costumes for a countywide choral performance, furniture to develop a calming, student-friendly classroom envi-ronment, and density blocks for hands-on study of matter. Through this chapter project, Theta supports area teachers desiring to facilitate and enhance classroom instruction. Welcome Meal for New Warren County Teachers
Gamma Chi Communications & Marketing Committee
Nancy Tunstall
Gamma Chi Chapter (Region III, Warren) spon-sored a welcome meal for new Warren County educators. The event was at Richard and Elaine Blankenship’s lake house on Lake Gaston. Richard Blankenship’s mother, Nancy Blankenship, was a long-time teacher in Warren County and a charter member of Gamma Chi. The Blankenship family supports Gamma Chi to honor their mother’s memory and her love for Delta Kappa Gamma with contributions to the Gamma Chi Scholarship Fund and by sharing their home for chapter activities.
New Warren County educators from Warren County High School (WCHS), Warren County Middle School (WCMS) and Warren New Tech High School (WNTHS) attended the event. Also in attendance were Jacqueline Hargrove, Beginning Teacher Coordinator, and Dr. Keedra Whitaker, Human Resources Director.
Gamma Chi members were on hand to present the Warren County educators with a chapter brochure, a Gamma Chi golden bag imprinted with the 2018-2020 chapter theme “Let’s Sparkle—From the Inside Out!” and a package of Tic Tac Freshmints with the inscription “We love your commit-MINT to educa-tion!” A good time was enjoyed by all.
Freebird McKinney Speaks to Multi-Chapter Event
Kappa Member
Candace Armstrong
More than 50 DKG members from Kappa, Beta Tau, Beta Sigma and Alpha Zeta (Region VIII, Mecklenburg & Union) heard Freebird McKinney, North Carolina’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, share his vision of “The Path of a Village Teacher: Being a Change Maker.” NC DKG President Dr. Teresa H. Cowan was a special guest at the October joint meeting.
McKinney, a lateral entry social studies and world history teacher, explained how he took from his own
background and an unusual name to challenge each stu-dent to become the best he or she could be. Freebird expressed the need for educators to build a community where students’
basic needs, as well as their intellectual growth, are nurtured.

Beta Alpha hosted a Christmas Tea for its annual tri-chapter event with Delta and Delta Xi (Region II, Pitt). Sweet delicacies, ac-companied by assorted teas (including a Beta Alpha blend) were enjoyed by eve-ryone. Entertainment was provided by the Grifton School elementary and mid-dle school choruses under the direction of Beta Alpha member, Chanelle Wil-liams. Members from the three chapters brought chil-
dren and young adult books to be distributed to the Ronald McDonald House, the Crossroads Community Center, and the local domestic violence shelter. The singers and their families enjoyed refreshments and visited with chapter members. The afternoon was truly one of community involvement and fellowship.

“Bolts of Melody: An Evening With Emily Dickinson” was recently pre-sented in the Batte Fine Arts Center at Wingate University. Alpha Zeta (Region VIII, Mecklenburg & Union) member, Sylvia Little-Sweat (right), served as the lecturer for the program and wrote the commentary which was delivered throughout the evening. The presentation was a com-pilation of the knowledge of the poet, Emily Dickinson, and her works put to music. It truly was a beautiful and inspiring evening. Several Alpha Zeta members were there to support Sylvia and to enjoy the even-ing. Alpha Zeta is very proud of Sylvia’s accomplish-ments as Wingate University’s Writer-in-Residence.

Beta Gamma (Region VII, Guilford) members manned the gift wrap table at the Greensboro Barnes & Noble in December as a fundraising event. Tips they received will go toward grants-in-aid for three graduate students in UNCG’s School of Education who have been interning at a local middle school where a member is principal. These tips will be added to the amount budgeted for a grant-in-aid this year so that we can provide a larger amount to each of these stu-

Philadelphia . . . . Here we Come!
The 2020 Convention will be held at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. NC DKG members planning to attend
the DKG International Convention in Philadelphia are asked to send your name to NC DKG Executive Secretary Dr. Barbara Perry-Sheldon: [email protected].
Here are some thoughts about travel to the convention.
Auto: Travel by car is certainly an option. One concern about auto travel is the cost of parking. The only hotel parking is valet and it runs $56 per day. There are several downtown parking areas as well as at the airport.
Air: Flights from various airports across the state range in price from $200-300. Air travel gives flexibility in terms of dates and times.
Train: Individuals could book their own trip from stations close to home. The price would vary, but the train could be booked and boarded anywhere it stops on its route across the state before heading north from Rocky Mount. Seats fill quickly in July so it would be important to book soon.
Find detailed information about all travel options on the NC DKG webpage: Philadelphia DKG Convention
Names and chapters of newly inducted members are published in the issue immedi-ately following receipt of the new member’s induction fees by the NC DKG Treasurer.
