March 2019

Having just driven back from Florida, it felt hopeful to see the daffodils, redbuds and dogwoods blooming all though Georgia, Tennessee and southern Kentucky. The past two days have been sunny and warm enough to bundle up a bit and go for a walk. Today, the gray is back and I am pondering a question we were given to think about in my church circle yesterday. Perhaps you would enjoy considering it too as spring seems hesitant to unfold in fullness. “In January, we think about ‘resolutions’ - a kind of heavy word. ‘Resolutions’ – the stern advice we give ourselves to stay on the straight and narrow for the next year beginning with bleak winter, cold, snow and ‘mud season’. There is a lightness to spring. Hang up the winter coat. Get outside. Shed the weight. Welcome movement. It’s time to open up: the windows, the doors, the tool shed with the trowels. It’s a time for Openings. So, what now do you want to be open to?” A reading from unknown, possibly Glenn Turner What are you opening your heart to for the rest of this year? For me, it means more opportunities to visit with neighbors who are outdoors in their yards or on their patios reading, gardening, and enjoying the warmth of the sun. Spring opens the opportunity for me to walk outdoors more and consider the possibility of trying some golf. (Perhaps you might join me, but remember I am learning and not a seasoned player.) As spring arrives, some of us in our chapter are packing up and moving to different destinations. They are truly opening to new possibilities. Others of us have challenges in navigating each day, but make the best of what we can do during those moments. Others of us are looking to clean out items in our homes that no longer have a purpose or sentimental meaning, opening new space that feels freeing. So as spring brings to arrive, one realizes that today is really a brand-new day, filled with possibilities to open to be the person she truly is, to live her dreams and convictions. So, despite the forecast, live like it’s spring! Lynette Farless, Tau President

House, 5353 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis. You will be able to enjoy 24 hours of crafts, yoga, music, fellowship, and food on the grounds of Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House. Oh yes, Lynette is one of the session leaders! She will be leading short chair yoga stretching sessions between three sessions of the retreat.

Tau member, Sabrina Rawlins, introduced her husband John at our March meeting. John, who is the Director of Admissions for Brown County Senior Living, shared information with our group on a topic that has impacted many of our members, Alzheimer’s. Tau has lost members who had suffered with Alzheimer’s. In other Tau families, our members have had to learn about this disease in order to help their family members who were diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s. Some of the information on Alzheimer’s that John shared with our members included: what causes Alzheimer’s; what are ways to reduce the risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia; and the impact of physical exercise and diet on Alzheimer’s.

Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Minutes – March 7, 2019

BCSC Administration Building

First vice-president Shirley Riehn opened the meeting with a welcome to all. She thanked the professional affairs and Marjorie Hooten Fund committees for preparing the refreshments. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Since our last meeting, we lost long-time members Luella Webb and Patty Unrue to death. Mary Ann Robbins shared memories of Luella and Vera Brown shared memories of Patty. Other members contributed memories also. Sabrina Rawlins introduced our speaker, her husband John, who is the Director of Admissions for Brown County Health and Living Community. He spoke about Alzheimer’s disease. John showed a short video which gave statistics about numbers of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and the alarming expected increase in those numbers in the coming years. He emphasized that there is no cure at this time, but

researchers are making strides towards finding a cure. He gave strategies that could be beneficial in lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s. The 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be September 29. Shirley then opened the business meeting. -The October minutes were approved as corrected (Lyon changed to Lion). Joan Houston reported a balance of $3489.42 in the treasury. Tau donated $50 to the Alzheimer’s Association in appreciation of John’s speaking to our group. Joan also reminded members that dues are due by June 30. -Sabrina suggested sending cards to Jolinn Bodkins. -Julie Anthers gave an update on the Marjorie Hooten Fund. MHF will pay $5000 for the elementary summer conference featuring speaker Deanna Nibarger. The conference will be June 11-12. Volunteers will be needed. Julie also reported that as of January $3700 had been approved for grants. MHF will limit grants for the rest of the year to 10 teachers or $2000. The January statement showed a balance of $126,248 in the fund. -The scholarship report was tabled until next meeting. -Shirley announced that we will have two leadership openings to fill. Beth Scholtes will be moving so we will need a new membership chairman. Donna Fleming will also be moving, and we will need someone to send cards. -The next meeting will be April 9 at 4:00 at the Ad Building. We will be helping Sheila Turner make stuffed creatures and blankets to be given to foster children. We will also have our silent auction fundraiser. -The meeting was adjourned. Mom Decorah, the female bald eagle from the Raptor Resource Project in Decorah, Iowa, would like to make sure our Tau members understand what Delta Kappa Gamma Society International’s Greek letters, DKG, mean. Oh yes, Mom Decorah knows that this information has been in Tau Talk before, but she also knows that we have some new members. :-) DKG or DKG: The D or D stands for Didaskotikai meaning Teachers; K or K, stands for Kleidouchai meaning Key; and G or G which stands for Gynaikes meaning Women. Remember DKG members are Leading Women Educators Impacting Education

Worldwide.

Upcoming Date: BCSC’s 5th Annual Summer Conference

The Power of Praise June 11-12, 2019 at Columbus North High School
