INTRODUCTION

I believe in intuition. And I believe in living my life intuitively.I wrote the first edition of Divine Intuition: Your Guide to

Creating a Life You Love in 2000. I was thrilled when it becamea classic in the field of intuition and was reprinted around theworld in more than a dozen languages.

I’ve heard from thousands of peoplewho’ve read that first edi-tion of Divine Intuition. They want to make a difference. Theyfeel moved to live their mission, their calling, their purpose. They describe themselves as healers, teachers, scientists, engi-neers, physicists, coaches, caretakers, spiritual seekers, parents, compassionate friends. and neighbors.

Here’s part of what I wrote in the Introduction to that firstedition.

One of the ways that I access my intuition is through mydreams. My technique is to write a few paragraphs about acurrent problem or concern before I go to bed at night. Ithen try to summarize my concern into a question. I imaginethat I am releasing this question to God. I fully expect ananswer. It may not come by morning but it always arrives.Sometimes I receive an answer that comes into my thoughtsfully formed. Many times I receive a little fragment ofinformation, a whisper from my soul.

viii I N T R O D U C T I O N

Several months before getting the book contract for the firstedition of this book, I wrote the following in my journal:

I have been praying for some months now about mynext steps, my life purpose. I have a successful businessgiving intuitive readings to individuals from all walks of life. They call me from all over the world. I feel richly blessed. Ihave an abundance of clients. I love what I do. I feel I am ofservice to the people I speak with as well as to my commu-nity. I teach classes and love sharing what I know. I feelguilty because I should be very grateful with the abundance Ihave in my work. But something is missing. I feel the need toreach out to more people and share with others what I havelearned. I see people yearning for the spiritual, searching formeaning, trying to understand why things happen the waythey do.

This was my summary question distilled from that paragraph:‘‘What next step should I take in my work?’’

Here’s the dream I received: I am being led down a corridorby two golden angels. I ask them where we are going. Theyinform me that they are taking me to a class about ‘‘what Godwants you to do.’’ I tell them that I’m very excited about thisclass. I’ve been praying about this for a long time. I thank themfor accompanying me. We reach a door to the classroom. Oneangel points to the workshop sign on the door. The title of theclass is printed on it. It says ‘‘Directions from God.’’ The otherangel begins to gently shake me. She says, ‘‘Wake up now andwrite that down. This is the subject of the book you are to write.’’

This is not intended to be a book about what I think Godwants you to do. It’s also not about my conversations with God.This book is about you—about listening, feeling, and experi-encing God’s presence through your divine birthright—yourintuition.

Marianne Williamson (2006) writes of God as ‘‘the pureand all-powerful love that rules the universe and lies within us

Introduction ix

all.’’ We call God by many names: higher consciousness, theuniverse, and divine wisdom, to name but a few. No matterwhat word you use, I believe there is an invisible intelligencethat animates our world and provides wisdom and love to guideour lives if we can just learn to listen to its prompting.

I’ve often joked that when we are born, we should arrivewith an instruction manual fromGod about our life purpose. Orwe should be given a tape like the one in the old television seriesMission Impossible: ‘‘Here is your mission should you choose toaccept it!’’ In fact, over the years, I have come to believe that wedo receive these instructions. They come through the whispersof our souls through our intuition. As we listen to this guidancefrom within, we not only hear the directions for creating a lifeof peace and meaning, we also receive ample instructions forliving the life of our dreams.

My Background

I haven’t always been able to tap into the power of the innerguidance of intuition. In fact, it took me quite a while tofigure out a career for myself. During my twenties, I workedin a number of nonprofit organizations. In my early thirties, Iworked as the operations manager of a software company.

But I always wanted to be self-employed and be my ownboss, making my own hours and having some degree of financialindependence. I certainly wanted to make more money thanI was in the nonprofit organizations. I started asking myselfquestions. What is it that I love? What would my ideal worksituation look like? What hobbies and interests do I have thatcould produce a living? Howmuchmoney would I like tomake?I wrote all this down and came up with this list:

• I like counseling people.• I like to study metaphysics and consciousness.• I’m a good listener.

Page 12: Divine Intuition - Startseite...2 DIVINE INTUITION The first word that comes to me about the experience of God is peace. I feel loved, I feel cared for, and peace comes with that—no

x I N T R O D U C T I O N

• I like to teach.• I want to work for myself.• I like to write.

I toyed with the idea of becoming a psychologist. I sentfor some applications and went on a few interviews, but aftereach one, I felt let down and disappointed. Everything feltheavy, as if there were no flow to it. Intuition often speaksto us through feelings and body sensations, and that sense ofheaviness indicated to me that becoming a psychologist wasn’ta good choice.

I thought about becoming a psychic. I had always beeninterested in metaphysics, intuition, spirituality, counseling, and human potential, and being a psychic summed up all thoseinterests for me. I saw myself as being an encourager for myclients, along with their hopes, dreams, and callings. However, Iwas a little concerned about the negative stereotype of ‘‘MadameEva’’ gazing into her crystal ball and announcing she saw ‘‘badthings in your future.’’

I had taken classes on developing intuitive skills and hadread many books on the topic of metaphysics. I decided to take arisk and began to give mini-readings (short intuitive readings toaddress a specific question) to friends.Much tomy surprise, theywere astonished at the accuracy of my information. I wondered,‘‘How do I develop a psychic reading business?!’’ I joked that ifGod posted a ‘‘Psychic Reader Wanted’’ ad in the Boston Globeemployment section, I’d apply. Barring that, I wasn’t sure whereto begin.

One aspect of what I learned in all of the metaphysicalbooks is that whatever you focus your attention on tends tomanifest in some way in your life. I thought about how I couldapply this to my desire for a new career. I knew the outcomeof what I wanted: to become a psychic. I just didn’t know howto get there. I decided to go to work with my understanding of

Introduction xi

practical metaphysics to see if I could get some assistance fromwhat I affectionately call ‘‘the helpers of the universe.’’ (I’ll giveyou more on that later.) My goal: ‘‘I have a full-time, successfulpsychic reading business.’’

To focus my attention toward this goal, I created threevisualizations, stating them as if they were already fact: (1) ‘‘Myappointment book is full of clients,’’ (2) ‘‘I see myself sittingacross from a happy client who is getting a psychic readingfrom me,’’ and (3) ‘‘I see my voice mail filled with lots ofmessages from clients wanting appointments.’’ Every morningand every evening I visualized these things and affirmed mysuccess. I pictured myself as successful in my business and feltthe excitement of having work that I truly loved. I also prayed andasked God for help in creating this if it was for my highest good.

About a month into this process of manifesting my vision,a friend who had been sick for a long time died. As I walkedinto the room for his funeral service, I heard a voice say, ‘‘Sitthere! Sit there!’’ My attention was quickly drawn to an emptyseat next to a woman I didn’t know. I looked around to see whohad spoken those words, but no one was near me. There werequite a few people in the room I knew, and I wanted to sit nextto them for emotional support. But the feeling was so strong Itook the seat next to the stranger.

At the end of the service, the woman and I started talking, and she asked me what I did for a living. Have you ever had oneof those times when your brain doesn’t engage with your mouth?Despite the fact that I was an operations manager at that time,I answered, ‘‘I’m a psychic.’’ I was immediately stricken withalarm. Why had I answered this way? What would she think?! Ihad done readings for a few friends and friends of friends, but Ihad never defined my career that way and felt flustered by myanswer. Of course, she couldn’t hear those voices inside me, andto my surprise, she was quite open and receptive. She then told

Page 14: Divine Intuition - Startseite...2 DIVINE INTUITION The first word that comes to me about the experience of God is peace. I feel loved, I feel cared for, and peace comes with that—no

me that she was a writer for the Boston Globe and would love tohave a reading so she could write about it in her column.

We arranged a time for me to go to her house to give hera reading. I was nervous! What if I blew it? What if I didn’t getany intuitive impressions or sense of what her life was about? What if she hated what I said? What if I was wrong? I was inquite a state when I arrived at her home. Despite my anxiety,as soon as I started the session, a remarkable peace came overme. The information flowed easily and effortlessly, and she wasreally pleased.

She called a few weeks later to say that she’d written a pieceabout our session for the paper. She wanted to tell me not to bedisappointed if it didn’t appear in her column. She was prettysure her editor wouldn’t accept it, mostly because of the topicand also because she didn’t often allow articles about specificindividuals in the column. A few days later, the writer calledagain and left a message saying her editor was enthusiastic aboutit and agreed to run it.

Here’s what Mopsy Strange Kennedy wrote in her article,‘‘Psychic Psychology’’ (1987), in the Boston Globe Magazine:

Whatever one’s vision of a psychic might be, LynnRobinson is probably not it. There is a practical quality towhat she offers, and at the same time she has been known tohave some extraordinary ‘‘seeings’’ into the specifics of aclient’s life. Once associated with Interface, a holistic center,Robinson has what might be loosely called a perspective ofspiritual psychology. She can be descriptive and explanatoryabout a situation or relationship, but she’s not aboveoccasional direct suggestions. Her findings are mostconcerned with addressing the rhythms of a person’s life, understanding the stubborn blocks and flowing places wherethat thing called growth might take place. Her insightspartake of a Zen-like suppleness that allows for flexibility and

Introduction xiii

grace, even in the presence of what might be unsettling orpainful.

Within the next sixmonths I received over four hundred callsfrom this one article. Most of these people made appointments, and my business was launched. My goal had come true in a wayI could never have orchestrated if left to my own devices. I had asuccessful psychic reading business. Then it hit me: I had jokedthat I wanted God to post a ‘‘psychic reader’’ position in theBoston Globe, and it was there—just not in the ‘‘Help Wanted’’section.

That’s my story of how one of my dreams came true withhelp from the universe. Several years later, I was able to take mystories and experiences and publish them in Divine Intuition, which was very successful. But then, as sometimes happens, things took a different direction In 2011, the original publishersent me a letter saying they would no longer be publishingDivine Intuition. It was a full-color, illustrated book that hadbecome too costly to print.

I’m a very calm, cool, and collected person. I usually don’tget overly dramatic or upset about things and can see good inalmost everything. In fact, I’m so optimistic that a friend (whowasa little annoyed with me at the time) labeled me ‘‘pathologicallypositive.’’ I assume that if a life difficulty emerges, it’s simplyopening the way for something better to come along.

However, when I received the publisher’s note, I was devas-tated. I cried and yelled at God about how unfair this was, howmany people had written to me and loved the book, and howbetrayed and abandoned I felt.

The next day I was still upset and crying. I felt so stronglythat this book was supposed to be in print. I didn’t know whatto do. So I asked God for a sign. I was expecting an unusualbutterfly or bird to show up, a song on the radio, or some words

Page 16: Divine Intuition - Startseite...2 DIVINE INTUITION The first word that comes to me about the experience of God is peace. I feel loved, I feel cared for, and peace comes with that—no

on a billboard—you know, the usual kind of ‘‘sign from God’’thing.

All day long, nothing out of the ordinary happened. How-ever, every time I felt discouraged, I just kept repeating, ‘‘God, Iwant to know that your hand is on my life.’’

By the evening, nothing had happened. No sign from God.At this point, my husband decided that the only thing that wasgoing to make me feel better was a good, old-fashioned hotfudge sundae. So off we went to the local Dairy Queen, wherethe following image showed up as part of the topping:

I know that God’s hand is on your life too.

I’m very grateful to my agent, John Willig, and my editor,Sheryl Fullerton, and all the other folks at Jossey-Bass for lettingthis book have a new life. In this revised and updated edition,

Directions from God

There’s an invisible organizing intelligence that we’re all partof, and we’re all here for a reason.

—WAYNE DYER

Everyone, even a devout atheist who believes God doesn’texist, has a belief about God. You’ve picked up this book for anynumber of reasons. Someone told you it was great. Youmay haveheard me on radio or seen me on television. Perhaps you feellost and need some guidance, and this book says it provides youwith some ‘‘divine direction.’’ You may be one of the 95 percentof people who believe in God. But who or what is God, andwhat does God have to do with intuition and bettering your life?

The Many Ways to View God

What’s your vision of God? An old man in a white robe sittingon a throne in some vast unseen place in the universe? Do youbelieve that life is an accident, and you just happen to be hereby chance and then you die? Do you believe that when otherspray, their prayers are always answered? Do you wish desperatelythat life came with a set of rules?

Perhaps you believe in a God who passes judgment on youand punishes you for your sins. Or maybe you believe that Godhas a specific purpose for your life if you could just figure it out.

The first word that comes to

God is peace. I feel loved, I feel

difficult the situation.

– Bernie Siegel

Deepak Chopra writes inhis book, The Essential How toKnow God (2007), ‘‘One baldfact stands at the beginning ofany search for God. He leavesno footprints in the materialworld.’’ We cannot know Godthrough the usual way we findthings out: through our physi-cal senses. So howdo you know

God exists? You may have read many books on the subject ofGod and religion. You may have read none at all. My guess isthat you picked up this book because you thought it might helpyou find some answers.

There is no one truth or right way to view God. Many willdispute that fact and claim to have ‘‘The Answer.’’ Wars toonumerous to count have been waged over who has the rightbelief about God. You will find your own truth within you. That’s where God placed it. We often personify what we can’tsee or understand. So for the purpose of this book, however youchoose to view or experience God is fine. May you find valuehere even if you’re a nonbeliever.

I believe that God exists as a positive force in all our lives. Ibelieve that it doesn’t matter how you view God: as a source oflife, love, divine energy, spirit, life potential, all-that-is, goddess, universal intelligence, or as a wise old man sitting among theclouds and surrounded by angels. I use many of these termsthroughout the book. Feel free to change the ones I use to termsyou’re comfortable with.

I am not a biblical scholar or a religion expert. I come froma Methodist family that viewed church as a place we went to onreligious holidays, which is to say that I didn’t grow up in a deeply

religious or spiritual home. I’ve come to my understanding ofGod through over twenty years of being a psychic intuitivecounselor.

Musician Kenny Loggins once observed, ‘‘Feeling is God’smirror; intuition is God’s telephone.’’ I know from personalexperience and from working with thousands of clients thatintuition is a ready source of direction available to all of us,compliments of the universe, or whatever one chooses to callGod. Fortunately, we all have it, and we are all capable ofdeveloping it for practical use in everyday life, as well as fordiscovering and achieving our life goals.

Many people think of intuition as the domain of a gifted few, even though it’s now recognized not as a rare, accidental talentbut as a natural skill anyone can cultivate. It’s true that someof us are intuitively gifted in the same way that an outstandingmusician or artist is gifted. But I believe the world will be a farbetter place to live when we all know how to routinely use thegift of intuition to enhance the quality of our lives.

Webster’s defines intuition as ‘‘quick and ready insight’’and ‘‘the act or process of coming to direct knowledge withoutreasoning or inferring.’’ It is derived from the Latin word intueri, which means ‘‘to see within.’’ It is a way of knowing, of sensingthe truthwithout explanations. My favorite definition of intuitionis from a fifteen-year-old girl who said, ‘‘Intuition is like whenyou know something, but like, where did it come from?’’

We’ve all heard the admonitions: ‘‘Follow your heart,’’ ‘‘Lis-ten to your inner voice,’’ and ‘‘Trust your gut.’’ These are some ofthe ways that we receive intuitive guidance, and those commonphrases make it sound easy. But what do you do when your innervoice sounds like your inner critic or, worse, your inner childrun amok? How can you learn to distinguish between your owninner knowing (your intuition) and your deepest inner fears?

Page 24: Divine Intuition - Startseite...2 DIVINE INTUITION The first word that comes to me about the experience of God is peace. I feel loved, I feel cared for, and peace comes with that—no

A Wise, Loving Source

I believe that each of us comes into this life with a mission, apurpose in life. It’s often referred to as a calling. It’s the thingthat brings joy and enthusiasm. The root of the word enthusiasmis entheos, which means ‘‘God within.’’ But think for a momentabout what that really means. When you feel enthusiastic aboutyour dreams, it means that God is speaking through you andsaying yes to your goals. The feeling of enthusiasm is one of theways intuition speaks to us.

I’ve spoken to thousands of individual clients and studentsabout the meaning of their lives and life in general. I’ve seenpeople struggle with concern about being punished by anunforgiving and vindictive God, and I’ve seen others embraceGod as a loving, positive source of comfort and guidance. OthersI’ve known have no belief in God and experience difficulty withthe idea of finding purpose and meaning.

My intention in writing this book is not to add yet anothervolume to the many books out there on the bookstore shelvesthat proclaim, ‘‘I have the answer.’’ My purpose is to assistyou in finding your own answer. I believe the key to your

By listening to the Creator

path.

destiny resides in your heartand soul. The power I call‘‘God’’ placed it there, and youcan access it through your intu-ition or inner guidance.

Here are some of the basicassumptions I make aboutGod’s role in my life:

• There is a wise, loving, and intelligent energy that I call God.This energy flows through me and all of the universe.

• I may not be able to see this energy, but I choose to believethat it exists and that it has my best interest at heart.

Page 25: Divine Intuition - Startseite...2 DIVINE INTUITION The first word that comes to me about the experience of God is peace. I feel loved, I feel cared for, and peace comes with that—no

Directions from God 5

• I believe that God informs me through my intuition aboutmy best and highest direction. This guidance, if followed, will lead me to greater peace and harmony in all aspects ofmy life.

• When I feel confused and uncertain, I go to this source ofwisdom and choose to trust the guidance I receive.

• I believe that God and God’s wisdom are hard-wired into ourgenes and our reason for being. From time immemorial, wehave in some way worshipped a higher power. For as long aspeople have inhabited this planet, there is evidence that theybelieved in some greater energy, deity, God, or force.

Psalm 46 in the Bible says, ‘‘Be still and know that I amGod.’’ It’s a concept echoed many times throughout the Bibleand in other spiritual books. You’re asked to wait, be quiet, andlisten within to hear the wise voice of God guiding you. Spiritualguidance—intuition—is your soul’s compass. It’s always there, whispering answers and giving direction. It can guide you topeace and harmony in your life.

We all lead busy lives. We’re on our phones, sending e-mails, tweeting, creating ‘‘friends’’ on Facebook. We go into theoffice early and stay late so we can keep our jobs. We’re parentsof little kids, and we’re trying to make ends meet. Or we’re thechildren of aging parents and so have no time for ourselves. Wemay tell people with some pride that we’re ‘‘crazy busy.’’We have endless to-do lists. So where do we find time tobe still and know God?

Take a moment, and think about any significant and impor-tant relationship in your life. You make time for it. It may be justa quick check-in by phone or a cup of coffee together. Friend-ships don’t thrive and grow on neglect. That’s where findingtime to listen to God’s voice comes in. Find your stillness in anyway you can, and tune in to that still, small voice of God. To dothis, take a few minutes throughout the day to stop, breathe, and

listen. Or take a walk and imagine God as your walking com-panion. Perhaps you might enjoy a daily inspirational message, book, or e-newsletter. Sit quietly and contemplate the messageand its relevance in your life.

Prayer is when we talk to God. Intuition is one of the mainways God answers. You’ll read in this book about the many wayswe receive this wisdom. I would be honored if this book inspiresa dialogue between you and God. If you haven’t visited withGod in a while, consider this a reintroduction. If God has beena constant source of guidance in your life, perhaps you can usethis book to go even deeper into this relationship.

Silence is the language God

speaks, and everything else is

a bad translation.

– Father Thomas Keating

We live in a time of monu-mental upheaval and change, and many of us are frightenedand feel lost. The mediahave an incredible focus onnegative news—the bad thingshappening everywhere. We’reno longer able to trust in the

external powers that we once had blind faith in—ourgovernments, our corporations, our religious leaders andpoliticians—and we’re forced to go within and find the answersfor ourselves. When we do, we have the power to transform thisworld from one that appears to be fueled by pain and sufferingto one offering joy, solace, and love. But where to begin? Howcan you as one person make a difference in this world? Youbegin in these ways:

• Going within• Praying• Meditating• Visualizing and imagining a world at peace• Living from a place of love and trust, not fear

Directions from God 7

Intuitive Answers

My hope is that you will find comfort and direction in thisbook. Whatever your belief is about the divine source, you haveaccess to a deep inner wisdom that resides in your soul. Yourintuition can summon the answers from this divine wisdom andhelp you live your life fully with your heart open and your armsflung wide.

The commonality I have found in world religions is that weare counseled to love others, forgive, be of service, and act withhumility and compassion. People have experienced God in thewind, in a church or temple, in the trenches of a war, onthe street, in a baby’s eyes, in the last breath of a loved one,in their cars, offices, and even a bar. God is an energy, anall-pervading spirit. God is truly everywhere—in our waking, our sleeping, and our dying.

Many of the more logical among you will point to the factthat I can’t prove God is ‘‘right there.’’ Yet I see signs of Godeverywhere. Universal wisdom resides in the daffodil that knowsto blossom in the spring when the earth is warming. God’s loveis in my neighbor’s heart when she arrives with dinner after Ireturn from a long trip. I feel the presence of spirit when I hearchildren laughing as they ride their bikes outside my house.

That wisdom is partof you, and though you can’t touch it or see it, you can experienceit. It’s there, and it’s real. Ten Questions About God

You may find it helpful to have a journal or notebook to use as you

do the exercises. I find it more effective to use paper and pen when

receiving intuitive answers. That may simply be personal preference.

If a computer or other device is more your style, feel free to use

that.

As you begin the book, ponder these questions so that you

gain some clarity on your thoughts and beliefs about God. Some

of the answers may be clear to you now, and some may become

clearer as you read further:

1. What is God? Describe your belief (or lack thereof) in God.

2. Have you ever experienced God’s presence? If so, describe the

experience.

3. What were you taught about God when you were a child?

4. Are your beliefs the same now that you’re an adult? If not, how

do they differ?

5. What practices (such as praying, meditating, or going to reli-

gious services) bring you closer to God?

6. How do you envision God?
