Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971 to honor those who gave their lives in

the Civil War. However, the holiday has expanded to include all who made the ultimate sacrifice in all wars that involved the United States military.

Annually, at 3:00 p.m. local time across the nation, a national Moment of Remembrance occurs.

Some people celebrate the holiday by attending parades and backyard parties, visiting cemeteries and some jet set away for weekend getaways.

In Hawaii, there are various activities and celebrations during the Memorial Day

weekend that involve remembering loved ones and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. People

in Hawaii visit the gravesites of loved ones who served their country and family members who

have passed away.

Ka La Kau Pua, which means “Decoration Day” in Hawaiian, is what Memorial Day is referred to. Gravesites across the state of Hawaii are adorned and decorated with tropical flowers and flower

leis. Puowaina, which means “Hill of Sacrifice,” is known today as Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. During Memorial Day

weekend, each gravesite located in Puowaina is decorated with the American flag and a flower lei

is placed by Cub and Boy Scouts.

Honor ∙ Remember ∙ Respect

Happy Memorial Day!
