he Hawaiian word, lei, means garland. In ancient Hawaii, a lei was made by a person who put their love and affection into making a lei to be given to honor a person. Lei are given today typically as a way to show a person is welcomed in Hawaii or a person is leaving Hawaii with well

wishes. Other reasons a person may receive a lei is as a token of friendship, congratulations,

recognition or appreciation. You may see flower lei being worn at weddings, anniversaries, school graduations, birthdays, retirements, funerals, etc.

It is customary to never throw a lei away in the trash when it browns. When a lei has browned, the wearer is supposed to give the lei back to

the earth by hanging it on a tree or back to a shrub where the flowers were picked to make the lei.

Please do not remove the lei in front of the person who gave you the lei as it is considered extremely

rude and ungrateful. It is also considered rude when a person refuses to accept a lei with the

exception of a pregnant woman. Pregnant women are not to wear a closed lei but rather an open lei

such as a maile lei. Hawaiians believe if a pregnant woman wears a closed lei, the unborn baby will be

choked by their umbilical cord.

Lei are usually made with fragrant flowers. However there are many lei that are made with non-fragrant flowers or shells and nuts. The most

important thought to remember about a lei is the purpose and intention of the person

receiving the lei.

Every year on May 1, the state of Hawaii celebrates May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. There are several lei contests around the state. Many elementary

schools celebrate May Day with school programs that include students performing the hula and singing Hawaiian songs complete with a royal

court simulation.

If you have received a lei while you are stationed in Hawaii, consider yourself lucky and honored to have experienced an authentic Hawaiian tradition.
