here are many Hawaiian sacred and cultural sites on O`ahu. Kukaniloko, also known as the

Birthing Stones, is one of the most sacred sites and is located near Schofi eld Barracks on the northern

side of Wahiawa. The Kukaniloko site sits on 5 acres and is managed by the Hawaii State Parks Division. The park is accessible during daylight

hours and is free to the public. There are 18 stones on the left of the entrance and 18 stones on the

right of the entrance. All 36 stones guard the main entrance to this sacred site. It is said the 36 stones represent the same number of chiefs who

witnessed births at Kukaniloko.

The Birthing Stones is a sacred site on O`ahu because Hawaiian chiefs were born at the site. Ancient Hawaiians wanted their offspring to be

born at Kukaniloko because of the spiritual power, mana, felt at this cultural site. Ancient Hawaiians viewed Kukaniloko as a centrally symbolic part of the island (or piko which is the Hawaiian word for navel cord) with the island of O`ahu being

the body. Only the chiefl y were allowed to enter and stand on the sacred land. Ancient Hawaiians believed their gods recognized the children who were born at Kukaniloko were of chiefl y status in

Ancient Hawaii.

5 TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES IN YOUR JOB SEARCH

Over 75% of employers are utilizing social networking to recruit candidates for positions in their organization. By far the most popular site used by employers is Linked In, followed by Facebook and Twitter. How can a job seeker land their dream job by using the top 3 sites chosen by employers?

1. Actively manage your online self. You need to be participating in a social network if you are going to be successful in your job search. You may be concerned about your privacy but it is far better to have a presence and manage your brand than to have an employer conduct a search and fi nd nothing. An invisible job seeker is unusual nowadays and may even suggest that you are out of touch with what is current.

2. Create a Linked In profi le. This is the most popular site chosen by organizations recruiting for employees. Make sure you take the time to complete your profi le. This is a snapshot of who you are professionally. Focus on your key skills and use key words and a strong summary to get noticed. Remember to follow businesses and groups that interest you and contribute with comments and postings that are professional.

3. Upload a professional photo to your Linked In profi le. If you cannot get a professional photo taken fi nd a friend who is great with a camera and stage a professional shoot. This is not the space to upload a wedding photo or a shot taken at the beach.

4. Make sure your Facebook profi le is private. Don’t forget that your network on Facebook can also assist you in your job search. Let your friends know you are looking and tell them what kind of position you are seeking. They may know of positions that are about to open or will remember you should they fi nd out about an opening at an organization. Your network wants you to be successful and may be able to give you a heads up on positions before they are posted to a job board. Just remember to ensure that your profi le is private so that employers cannot see your personal updates.

5. Include your Linked In and Twitter handle URLs on your resume under contact information. By adding these links you are offering an employer alternate ways of contacting you and seeing how you interact online. Don’t add your Facebook profi le as it is not public. Adding the URLs also shows that you are up to date with the latest social media which is a skill in demand by most employers.

Social media allows you to build on the connections you already have. Think about who you need to connect with to land a job. Often a twitter account or participation in a group through Linked In may give you access to someone who ordinarily may be out of your circle. It is who you know! Don’t forget that you still need to connect with human beings off line. Utilize social networking as part of your entire job seeking repertoire.
