There is little to choose between IV and 1M regimens of magnesium sulfate for the prevention of seizures in women with severe pre-eclampsia, report researchers from Durban, South Africa. No seizures occurred and clinical outcome was similar in women treated with 1M magnesium sulfate (loading dose 14g + 5g every 4 hours; n = 9), compared with those who received IV magnesium sulfate (loading dose 6g + maintenance 2 g/h; 8). :\'eonatal outcome was also similar for both groups. Sep 1994 IV ondansetron 0.15 mg/kg controlled emesis after paediatric eye surgery, say US researchers. They report a reduction in the incidence and severity of emesis in 90 children within 24 hours after surgical strabismus correction with prophylactic ondansetron. In this study, the severity of vomiting was significantly reduced by ondansetron compared with metoclopramide. The researchers comment that further studies are required to determine whether ondansetron is more efficacious and cost -effecti ve than metoclopramide in this setting.
