LITTLE MATCH GIRLBALLET

T H E CH RISTMAS STORY

A small girl makes her living selling matches

on the streets of New York. It’s winter, and the

hustling crowds at best ignore her, and some are

outright rude. She takes shelter to try to stave off

the cold a bit, and lights a match. It gets blown

out; this happens again, then on the third try, she

falls into a dream. In this dream, cherubs attend

her, she gets a new doll, then a new dress. The

cherubs put her on a throne. Then a storm comes,

and she goes toward a candle. That candle goes

out, and we see that back in the real world, so did

her match and her life. An angel comes along and

takes her soul.

ASK YOUR MAMA

The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia concert performance

of Langston Hughes’s kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite. Ask Your Mama

is Hughes’s homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic

and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the

1960s. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with

musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie

woogie, bebop and progressive jazz, Latin “cha cha” and Afro-Cuban

mambo music, German lieder, Jewish liturgy, West Indian calypso,

and African drumming -- a creative masterwork left unperformed at

his death.

Originally, Langston Hughes created Ask Your Mama in the

aftermath of his participation as an official for the five-day Newport

Jazz Festival of July 1960. The musical scoring of the poem was

designed to serve not as mere background for the words but to

forge a conversation and a commentary with the music. Though

Hughes originally intended to collaborate with Charles Mingus, and

then Randy Weston, on the full performance of his masterwork,

it remained only in the planning stages when Langston Hughes

died in 1967. Its recovery now in word, music, and image provides a

galvanizing experience for audiences everywhere.

Our Audience

Dillard Center for the Arts will attract an estimated 10,000 ticketed guest this season. Our audience features adult professionals including parents, students, education professionals and arts patrons from all areas of Broward County.

Corporate/Business and community support is invaluable to our program, as it provides the future artist of tomorrow the opportunity to gain the types of extra ordinary experiences that students with a deep passion for studying at a Visual & Performing Arts Magnet school should receive. Cash and in-kind support from sponsors helps to bridge the gap between what the public school system can provide and the actual resources our students need to be prepared for success either in college or in the professional world.
