Introduction Manyschools throughout theUnitedStateshaveembracedaone-to-one initiativeconvincedthatifeverystudenthadadeviceandifeveryteacherweretrainedtousethesedevices,thenstudentlearningwould riseautomatically. Unfortunately,addingadigitaldevice to theclassroomwithoutafundamentalchangeinthecultureof teachingandlearningwillnot leadtosignificant improvement.TheSylacaugaCitySchoolSystemrecognizedtheemphasisinaone-to-oneinitiativeshouldbeondesigningassignmentsthatareengagingandempowering.Theemphasisshouldbeonthelearning,notthedevice. TheSylacaugaCitySchoolSystemchosetouselanguagethatdescribesaninitiativethatsetsthetoneanddirectionforamoreinspiringvisionthansimplygivingeachstudentadevice.Thesystemnamedthe initiativeDigitalbyDesignto indicatemorefocusondesigning limitlessopportunitiesforlearningthanonthedeviceitself. Thesystemdeterminedthateventhoughthefocuswouldbeonensuringthattechnologyisseennotasanotherinitiative,butasintegraltocurriculum,numerousdecisionshadtobemaderegardingimplementationandlayingasolidfoundationforthisinitiativetobesuccessful.Whichdeviceshouldbepurchased?Whattrainingwillberequired?Howmuchwilltrainingcost?Whatotherresourceswillbeneeded? TheSylacaugaCity School System chose theGoogleChromebook due to affordability anddurability.Inaddition,Googleprovidesproductsdesignedtohelpyoustayorganized,getanswers,keepintouch,andmore.Googleapplicationsalloweasycollaborationandconvenience. Thesystemwanted todevotefinancial resources to leveraging the technology for innovative
teaching and learning but the systemalso recognizedthatstudentsandteachersneededtobetrainedontheGoogleapplicationsaccessiblethroughtheChromebook.With limited financial resources,Mrs. JenniferRosato,Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, knewthe systemhad to explore options for providing directinstructionondigitalcitizenship,navigationandGoogleapplications. Mrs. Rosato approached lead FBLAAdviser, Tyler Laye, to see if the local FBLA chaptermembers would be interested in training students,Seventh grade students

Statement of Project Goals
The primary goal of Sylacauga FBLA community service projects is to establish a desire inits members for volunteerism that impacts Sylacauga and surrounding communities. Members ofSylacaugaFBLAarecommittedtoexposingthemselvestoavarietyofareasofserviceandfeelthatproviding service to the community is vital to their personalgrowthandtothestrengthoftheirchapter. InorderforSylacaugaFBLAtocreatealastingimpactonthecommunityofSylacaugathroughthe2016-2017Digitalby Design Community Service Project, the following goalsweredeveloped:• ProvideassistancetotheSylacaugaCitySchoolsystemin
theDigitalbyDesigninitiativefreeofcharge• Educatestudentsontheimportanceofdigitalcitizenshipas
wellasteachstudentshowtouseGoogleapplications.• Buildleadership,communication,technology,eventplanning,multimediaproductions,networking,
administrative,clerical,marketing,anddesktoppublishingskills.Inaddition,SylacaugaFBLAmembersagreed that thisyear’scommunityserviceprojectmeets thefollowingFBLAgoals.• Developcompetent,aggressivebusinessleadershipskills.• Strengthentheconfidenceofstudentsintheirwork.• Encouragememberstodevelopprojectstobenefittheschoolandcommunity.• Encouragescholarshipandpromoteschoolloyalty.• Assiststudentsintheestablishmentofoccupationalgoals.• Facilitatethetransitionfromschooltowork.

Service to the Community and its Citizens
TheDigital byDesignCommunity Service Project filled a great need in the SylacaugaCitySchoolSystemandtheSylacaugacommunity.TheSylacaugaCitySchoolSystemdecidedtopilottheDigitalbyDesigninitiativeinthe7thgradeatNicholsLawsonMiddleSchool.Thepurposeofpilotingtheinitiativeinonegradeonlywastoworkoutanyissuesbeforeimplementingitthroughouttheentiresystem.TheSylacaugaFBLAmembersassistedwithChromebookinventory,Chromebookdistribution,andtrainingparents,students,andfaculty.TheassistancethattheSylacaugaFBLAmembersprovidedrepresentedamajorcostsavingstotheschoolsystemandprovidedneededtrainingsoteacherscouldfocusoncurriculumdevelopmentutilizingthenewtechnology. Incredibly and unexpectedly, businesses and organizations in the Sylacauga communityrequestedtheservicesoftheFBLAGoogleTrainers.FBLAGoogleTrainersledtrainingsessionsattheSylacaugaChamberofCommerce,B.B.ComerMemorialLibrary,severalsmallbusinesslocations,andtheSylacaugaAllianceforFamilyEnhancement.Thesetrainingsessionseducatedcommunityandbusinessleadersonhowthecloud-basedGoogleapplicationscouldbenefittheirorganizationsbymodernizingtheircommunications,filemanagement,storagesolutions,andmore.

SylacaugaFBLAofficersmetonJuly27,2016toplanactivitiesfortheupcomingyear.Oneoftheitemsontheagendawasadiscussionregardingideasforthecommunityserviceproject.TheofficersdecidedtorecommendthattheDigitalbyDesignprojectbethefocusofthisschoolyear’scommunityserviceprojecttotheFBLAmembersatthefirstchaptermeetingonAugust14,2016.AfteramajorityvotetoadopttheDigitalbyDesignCommunityServiceProject,GraceAbernathy,member,andIbbyDickson,officer,werechosentobetheco-chairs. GraceAbernathy, IbbyDickson, project chairs, JackWilbanks,ChapterPresident, andTylerLaye,LeadFBLAAdviser,metwithPaulaBruno,NicholsLawsonMiddleSchoolAssistantPrincipal,andCeciliaDean,NicholsLawsonMiddleSchoolMediaSpecialistandCertifiedGoogleTrainer.ThepurposeofthismeetingwastoidentifythecapacityinwhichtheSylacaugaFBLAchaptermemberswouldservetohelpmaketheDigitalbyDesigninitiativeasuccess.ItwasdeterminedthatSylacaugaFBLAmembers would help with Google Chromebook Inventory, Google Chromebook Distribution,GoogleTraining-ParentMeetings,andGoogleTraining-7thGraders. It was also determined that Sylacauga FBLA members would be trained by Cecilia Dean,Nichols LawsonMediaSpecialist andCertifiedGoogleTrainer. This trainingwouldensure that allFBLAGoogleTrainerswere trained on thesame applications in the same way andwouldbepreparedtodelivertrainingto1757th graders. These sessions were video-recorded to be available formemberswhowereunabletoattendtraining. DuringourOctoberchaptermeeting,FBLAmemberswere given the opportunitytovolunteertoparticipate inthecommunityserviceproject.Memberscouldvolunteertohelpwithinventory,distribution,andtraining.

Committees Members volunteered to participate in various committees. Creating committees within theserviceprojectallowedmanymemberstobe involvedandpromotedigital literacy in theSylacaugacommunity. Executive Committee: Grace Abernathy and Ibby Dickson served as Community ServiceProjectChairsandledtheexecutivecommittee.SylacaugaFBLAPresidentJackWilbanksandVicePresidentAllexusPhillipsalsoservedontheexecutivecommittee. Scheduling and Logistics Committee: SylacaugaFBLAmemberson theSchedulingandLogisticsCommitteecreatedschedules for trainingstudentsandparents.Thiscommitteewasalsoresponsibleforensuringallscheduledmemberswerepresentatevents. Public Relations Committee: ThePublicRelationsCommitteewasresponsibleforpublicizingSylacaugaFBLA’sDigitalbyDesigncommunityserviceproject.Thiscommitteewrotepressreleasesandworkedwiththedesigncommitteetoensureaccurateinformationwasonflyers. Design Committee: The Design Committee led the designing of event logos and flyers.SylacaugaFBLAmemberLyndseyDaviscreatedaDigitalbyDesignlogofortheentireschoolsystemto use.

Google Docs, Slides, and Drive:FBLAGoogleTrainerspresentedtheirskillsonJanuary17,2017,fortheseventhgrade.ThetrainerscoveredthedifferentfeaturesintheGoogleDocs,Slides,andDriveapplicationsincludinghowtoshareadocumentandslideandhowtocreate,organize,andmovefoldersandfilesfortheirclasses. Gmail, Forms, and Digital Citizenship: A different team of FBLA Google Trainers taughtseventh grade students Gmail, Forms, and Digital Citizenship. The trainers covered the differentfeaturesinGmail,Forms,anddigitalcitizenshipconceptsincludingcreatingforms,surveys,quizzes,presentations,internetsafety,cyberbullying,anddigitalfootprint.

FBLAGoogleTrainersfurtherpreparedtotraintheseventhgradestudentsatNicholsLawsonMiddleSchoolbycreatinglessonplansandvisualaids.ThelessonplansandvisualaidsweresharedwithallGoogletrainersandweremeanttoensureconsistencybetweenalltrainersandalllessons.Abriefsynopsisoftheinformationcoveredinthelessonplansisasfollows.

OnDecember15-16,2017,FBLAmemberstraveledtoNicholsLawsonMiddleSchooltoassistwiththeinventoryofthenewGoogleChromebooks.Membershadtoassignassetcodes,documentChromebookidentificationnumbers,andassignChromebookstoeachofthe7thgraders. OnJanuary10-12,2017,FBLAGoogleTrainersmetwithparentstodemostratetheapplicationsthestudentswouldbeutilizingatschoolandathome,todiscussdigitalcitizenshipandexpectationsofstudents,andtohelpanswerquestions. OnJanuary11,2017,FBLAmembersdistributedtheChromebookstoeachofthe7thgraders.Allofthestudentswereveryexcitedtoreceivetheirnewdevice. OnJanuary17-18,2017,FBLAGoogleTrainerstrained1757thgradestudents.Thestudentswereallveryexcitedandlearnedsomuch.FBLAGoogleTrainershelpedthe7thgradestudentslogintotheirSylacaugaCitySchoolsGmailaccountandtrainedthemonGmail,Docs,Drive,Forms,Slides,andDigitalCitizenship.

Implementation of Project AfterhearingaboutthesuccessfultrainingatNichols-LawsonMiddleSchool,MargaretMorton,ExecutiveDirector of SylacaugaAlliance for Family Enhancement, a local, non-profit organization,contactedTylerLaye,LeadFBLAAdviser,requestingtheservicesofFBLAGoogleTrainersattheirnextstaffmeeting.FBLAGoogletrainersledatrainingsessionformorethanfortystaffmembersJanuary23,2017. Other local businessesand communitymembers voiced interest inGoogle training, aswell.FBLAGoogleTrainersledadditionaltrainingsessionsattheSylacaugaChamberofCommerceandtheB.B.ComerMemorialLibrary.Inaddition,FBLAGoogleTrainersprovidedafewone-on-onesessionswithlocalbusinessownerswhowereunabletoattendthepreviouslyscheduledtrainingsessionsopentothepublic. Impact and Benefits to the Community
Through the 2016-2017 Digital by Design Community Service Project, the Sylacauga CitySchoolSystem,teachers,parents,and1757thgradersbenefitedfromtheGoogletrainingprovidedbySylacaugaFBLAmembers.SylacaugaFBLAchaptermembersprovidedaservicethatsavedtheschoolsystemfinancial resourcesandprovided thestudentswithasolid foundationofGoogleanddigital citizenship knowledge. This foundationwill aid the students and teachers in a successfullypilotedDigitalbyDesigninitiative.ParentsalsolearnedabouttheGoogleapplicationstheirchildrenwouldbeusingatschoolandathome.
Local businesses and organizationshavealsobenefittedfromtheDigitalbyDesignproject. Small business owners, leaders ofa non-profit organization, and communitymemberslearnedhowcloud-basedtechnologycan modernize communication, improvecollaboration, organize files while providing
accessfromanydeviceequippedwithaninternetconnection.OrganizationsweresopleasedwiththetrainingresultstheyhavealreadyrequestedadditionalsessionswiththeFBLAGoogleTrainers. SylacaugaFBLAmembersbenefittedfromtheDigitalbyDesignCommunityServiceProject.Theplanning,development,implementation,andmanagementofDigitalbyDesignnotonlyincreasedthemembers’knowledgeofGoogleapplications,butalsoofcommunication,graphicdesign,publicrelations,timemanagement,eventplanning,presentationskills,andmore.Participatinginreal-worldexperiencesnotonlyprovidespractical skillsandknowledgetothemembersbutalsoputsthematanadvantageandmakesthemmoremarketable upon entering the workforce.Sylacauga FBLA members have beenpositively impactedthroughtheir involvementwithDigitalbyDesign. Based on the positive resultsand testimonies fromall involved, theDigitalby Design Community Service Project hasbeendeemedahugesuccess.

The original intent of Sylacauga FBLA’s Digital by Design Community Service Project wasto trainstudents,parents,and teachersabout theGoogleapplications thestudentswillbeusing in
the classroom and at home on the new GoogleChromebooks. Due toSylacaugaFBLAmembersextraordinary effort and excellence in training,the project transformed into so much more. Fromtraining local businesses, citizens, and students,the project not only promoted Sylacauga FBLA,theSylacaugaHighSchoolBusinessManagementand Administration program, and Career andTechnical Education but also transformed the wayorganizationsandclassesoperate.Theimpactithas
madethroughoutourcommunitycontinuestogrow.TheSylacaugaFBLAchapterplanstocontinuethisprojectwiththerolloutofDigitalbyDesigntotheentireSylacaugaCitySchoolSystem. Thecommunityreceivedavaluableserviceandbecameawareofthepositivecontributionsthatstudentsaremaking.SylacaugaFBLAmembershavelearned,first-hand,thetime,energy,andeffortittakestoservebutmostimportantly,thememberslearnedthatservingrewardstheserversasmuch,ormore,thanthosebeingserved.

Inaddition,whenfirstsemesterreportcardsweresenthome,SylacaugaFBLAcreatedflyersattachtothereportcards.Theseflyersinformedparentsontrainingsessions. Following a successful service project, SylacaugaNews.com, the online news source forSylacauga,publishedastoryhighlightingSylacaugaFBLA’sefforts. SylacaugaCitySchoolsmadepostsonitssocialmediaoutletswithmorethan3,000followershighlightingSylacaugaFBLA’sworkintheDigitalbyDesigninitiative. WhenworkingwiththeSylacaugaChamberofCommerce,theChamberutilizedanemailblastcapability,emailingmemberswithinformationregardingtrainingsessionsfromFBLAmembers. ProjectChairIbbyDicksonwasalsoabletosharethisexcitingprojectwiththeSylacaugaRotaryClub,theSylacaugaChamberofCommerce,andtheSylacaugaCitySchoolsFoundation.
