Principal’s reportDear parents/caregivers,

Term three has been extremely busy and seems to have flown by. Our students have enjoyed an extensive number of extracurricular opportunities and I thank our hard working staff for investing copious hours outside of their teaching and learning responsibilities to provide these experiences for the students of Bligh Park Public School!

Kindergarten enrolments for 2020 We have started taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2020. If you have a child who will be enrolling in Kindergarten for 2020, please assist us by completing an enrolment form. Forms are available from the office and we ask that you also please bring your child’s birth certificate/passport, immunisation documents and proof of address with you. Term 3 I Week 10 Page 2

Last week we said goodbye to Miss Howard who began her Bligh Park journey in the early 1990s when she was a student here in Years 1 and 2. She then went on to finish her education at Bede Polding and then on to becoming a teacher.

For just over 9 years, Miss Howard has been a wonderful teacher and mentor to our students. She

has always set a wonderful example to everyone. During this time she has taught K-4 and taken the chess club, public speaking team and dance group.

Over the past few years Miss Howard has lovingly been in charge of organising the gold card morning tea. She is now taking the opportunity to share her many talents overseas by helping children learn English – a wonderful undertaking.

Miss Howard has been an integral part of Bligh Park Public School and will be greatly missed by the students, staff and school community.

We wish Miss Howard all the best as she spreads her magic across the globe.

We say goodbye to Miss Howard

Miss Howard has been an integral part of Bligh Park Public School and will be greatly missed by the students, staff and school community.

Out of area enrolments Included in this newsletter is an information sheet regarding recent changes to the procedures for ‘out of area’ enrolments at NSW public schools. I encourage you to read these 2 pages so that you are fully aware of the implications for our school. If you are unsure as to whether or not you are in our catchment area, you can check your address using the school locater – https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder.

Just a reminder that there is no staff development day in Term 4 – so school will resume on Monday 14 October.

Take care and enjoy the time with family and friends.

Joan Westerweller

“I wish all of our students and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday.”

The 2019 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge is now over.Congratulations to our students that completed the challenge. We had almost 300 students participate – what a fantastic result.

Certificates will be handed out during Term 4 when they are released from the NSW arts unit.

We will also have 5 very special awards for students who have completed their 4th (gold) or 7th (platinum) challenge.

…Then we went to the Hawkesbury Regional Museum and went on a museum treasure hunt. I got an iphone and had to find what they used in the olden days. Aidan 3/4G

Upstairs there was a parlour. The parlour was used for writing, morning tea, dining and afternoon naps. It had a large mirror on the wall to reflect light as they didn’t have electricity back then. Exploring Howe House was my favourite part of the excursion. Ava 3/4G

Stage 2

Local History Excursion On Thursday 12 September, Stage 2 went on an excursion to Windsor. We went there because in history

we are learning about change and continuity in the local area.

We went to Howe House to learn about the people that lived there and what they did in the past. Howe House was an inn back in the day. The flood in 1867 came up to the window sills.

The girls had to wear aprons to keep their clothes clean and the boys wore waistcoats to show that they were wealthy.

In the kitchen there was a fireplace and the floor was made of stone so if there was a fire it wouldn’t burn. You had to heat the water in a pot over the fire and pour it into the bath. They only had a bath once a week!

…In Thompson’s Square we had to compare an old photo of Thompson’s Square with how it is today. Some of the differences were the new bridge and the cars on the road. Ashton 3/4G

Students investigated this person as part of their Term 3 homework assignment which is designed to elevate the students’ understanding

of the qualities, characteristics and challenges that are part of every successful, ‘notable’ person’s life.

Parents/caregivers and students had an opportunity to interview these ‘famous people’ and learn ‘first hand’ about their lives and accomplishments. The aim of the assignment is meant to inspire them to nurture and develop their gifts and talents in order to make our world a better place.

Our Stage 3 students were just outstanding in their presentation and were congratulated by Mrs Westerweller on their application to this project and how well they were able to project themselves into their chosen famous person. Mrs Westerweller had a special viewing on Friday and was blown away by their outstanding work. Take a bow Stage 3 and congratulations to their teachers for inspiring these young minds.

Day of the notablesStage 3

Last Thursday 19 September, Stage 3 took the opportunity to display their homework task in a day of the notables. This was a unique and exciting event where our Stage 3 students ‘become’ a famous person from history!

Thank you to our parents/caregivers and community for coming along to our book parade on Monday, 23 September. Thank you also for supporting our book

fair with your purchases and $330 worth of book donations. The students all looked wonderful in their character costumes, well done to everyone. Each class selected one student as their favourite character on the day.

SRC report

Stewart House collection

A huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Stewart House collection that we had last week. It was fantastic to see so many Stewart House bags brought back. Giving to those in need is very special, and it is truly appreciated.

We would like to wish everyone a safe and fun school holidays. We look forward to hearing all about your exciting adventures.

Thank you, SRC

Project ‘clean up’ updateThis term we launched our ‘project clean up’ initiative and it has been wonderful to see the impact it has had on our school. Thank you to all the students who continue to use behaviours that align with our weekly SRC focus. The last two weeks we have focused on students lining up on time, respectfully and responsibly and have handed out many SRC Bluey awards. Keep up the great work! This week senior SRC representatives will be going around to classrooms and checking in with everyone to get some feedback about ‘project clean up’ and how it has been going in the eyes of everyone else.

A friendly reminder that your SRC Blueys should not go into the Bluey box and that you make sure you keep them until you have received 20.

Make sure you keep a

hold of them until you have

20!

Artwork fundraiserOrder forms and payment for the artwork fundraiser are due back to the office by Thursday 31 October. Items available to choose from include calendars, diaries, tea towels and tote bags. These would make wonderful birthday or Christmas presents for friends and family, or to keep as a personal memento of your child’s primary school years.

Kindergarten 2020Uniforms will be available to purchase or order at the upcoming Kindergarten information night and orientation days in Term 4. The uniform shop is also open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2.45- 3.15pm

Our canteen was presented this week with a Nutribullet

blender as an incentive lucky draw prize by Joel Bazley

from Nepean Health.

This is in recognition of the combined efforts of the P&C and our canteen

manager, Mrs Murphy who have worked hard to review and improve the canteen menu to provide healthy choices for our students and meet

the healthy schools’ canteen initiative.

Lost property is overflowing with school clothing, jackets, lunch containers and drink bottles. We invite all parents/caregivers and students to visit lost property before the end

of this term and reclaim their property. Lost property is located next to the

staffroom entrance. Please ensure your child’s property is clearly marked with their name so it can be easily

returned. At the end of the term, any unnamed school clothing will be donated to the school’s

second-hand uniform shop or used for students who require assistance.

Any non-school clothing not collected by the end of term will be donated to a charity.

Have your say on before and after school careThe NSW Government is committed to providing before and after school care to all students of public primary schools in New South Wales. As part of the reform, a parent web form has been established by Service NSW that will enable parents to tell the department about their specific care needs and to stay up-to-date with any new developments.

The information provided by parents will help the Department of Education to understand your needs, give them insights into where there are gaps in service delivery and help to ensure the extra places are delivered where they are required. Have your say at:https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/basc

Applying for Year 7 entry into selective high schools in 2021Government schools use a range of strategies to meet the educational needs of gifted and talented students. One strategy is selective high school placement, which provides intellectual stimulation and an educationally enriched environment for gifted and talented students. Offers for selective high school placement will be determined mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment.

If you would like your child to apply for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2021, you need to apply online at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. The site opens on 8 October 2019 and closes on 11 November 2019.

Within the enrolment cap, a number of enrolment places (the buffer) must be kept aside for the likely number of local students who will need to enrol during the year. For this reason, a school will not take non-local students once they reach their buffer, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

100-point residential address checkParents planning to enrol their child at a school that is near or at its buffer or cap will be asked to complete the 100-point residential address check to confirm they livewithin the school’s designated intake area. This meansparents will need to provide documents to verify thechild’s current address. So that schools only seek information relevant to the child’s enrolment, a list of approved documents for the residential address check is available from the school or the department’s website at https://education.nsw.gov. au/policy-library/policies/enrolment-of-students-in-nsw-government-schools.

Selection criteria for non-local enrolmentSibling enrolments are now clearly prioritised (where possible) and selection criteria for non-local enrolment will not include student ability, performance or achievement.

The Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools policy is in place to assist schools to meet their obligations under the Education Act 1990 - to ensure that every student has a place at their local school. The policy also communicates to staff and the community a transparent enrolment process.

Why was the enrolment policy revised?Across the state, many communities are changing. Some are growing at rates never seen before. Some schools that used to be able to accept out-of-area enrolments, no longer have the room to do so.The revised policy is designed to support schools to manage all enrolment applications, encourage greater consistency in decision-making and make sure the enrolment choices are clear for parents.

What are the changes? The enrolment capThe enrolment cap is the number of students that can be enrolled at a school based on the school’s permanent accommodation. The enrolment cap tells us whether the school may or may not have the capacity to accept non-local enrolments. It is not a target or limit on the number of local enrolments a school can take. Each school with a local intake area will have a cap set by the department from Term 4 2019.

ContactFor general enquiries contact: 1300 679 332 or email: [email protected] enrolment enquiries, speak to your local school. Find school contact details at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/going-to-a-public-school/finding-a-public-school

I already have a child enrolled as an out-of-area student in a NSW Government school. Can I enrol my other children at that school too? This will depend on the capacity of the school:· If the school is not near its buffer, then siblings should

be able to be enrolled at the school. In fact, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is nearing its buffer, then the school will form a non-local enrolment panel. The panel considers non-local enrolment applications when the number of non-local applications received exceeds the number of places available below the buffer. Again, in this instance, siblings of students currently enrolled will be prioritised, where possible, over other non-local enrolment applications.

· If the school is at capacity, it will not accept non-local enrolment applications unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I have already accepted an offer for my child to attend a school in 2020 that is not my local school. What happens now? The enrolment will proceed. Non-local enrolments accepted before Term 4 2019 for students starting in 2020 should not be affected.

What is the criteria for enrolment in a school that is not my local school? Schools that are able to accept non-local enrolment applications establish a non-local enrolment selection panel, if demand exceeds the number of places below the school’s buffer. Schools are required to make the selection criteria available to the school community.

My circumstances are challenging and I think this school is best for my child. We live outside the school’s intake area. What should I do?We understand that not everyone’s circumstances are the same, and that there are instances where exceptional and compelling circumstances will need to be considered. If this is the case, you should talk to the principal of your local school.

What has not changed?Schools will continue to enrol students who live in their local intake area, regardless of the school’s cap status. Enrolment procedures for students accessing particular education settings (for example selective schools, distance education, specialist support classes for students with disability, Intensive English Centres) are not affected by the revised policy. In schools with available places, there are no changes to enrolment rights of siblings of non-local students. Each enrolment application is considered on its merits, including if siblings currently attend the school. If the school is below capacity, out-of-area applications for siblings of current students will be given enrolment priority.Schools will continue to provide families with support and advice during the enrolment process, including assessment of exceptional and compelling circumstances particularly for vulnerable students and their families.Schools will also continue to apply the policy fairly and consistently using transparent and accountable processes when making decisions about enrolment applications. Parents have a right of appeal to determine whether the stated processes have been applied in a procedurally fair manner.

But what do the changes mean for me?What if my child is already enrolled but we do not live in that school’s intake area?Your child will remain enrolled at the school as the revised policy does not affect students already enrolled in NSW Government schools.

We were in area when my child was enrolled in the school. The department has since changed the school’s boundary and our residence is now out of area. I have other children and I want them all to go to the same school. What are my options? At times it is necessary for the department to make adjustments to a school’s local enrolment intake area. This could mean a family with a child/children already enrolled is then outside the local intake area. When this happens, the family will still be able to enrol siblings together at the school, regardless of whether the school is over the buffer or cap.
