CAPITAL WORKS UPDATE Last week we had another meeting with our architects Clarke Hopkins Clarke and DET personnel and the final plans for our new gym and arts facility are close to finalised and put out to tender. If all goes to plan, initial preparation of the site will occur in term 4 this year with construction commencing in 2018. With the exciting news of our additional 1.5 million dollars received in this year’s budget, the performing arts facility can now be fully completed as part of the gym and art room complex. Below are some preliminary plans for the refurbishment of our existing prep building. Undertaking much needed maintenance while creating such wonderful flexible 21st century learning spaces to better support our teaching and learning pedagogy is very exciting. Our Master Plan was already well developed and new planning is well under way for this second stage of work. It will be done in a timely manner once the gym is completed. I will place a copy of this plan and others associated with this work on the windows outside the staffroom. Please come and have a closer look and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

OUR MUCH ANTICIPATED CIRCUS SKILLS PRODUCTION – THIS THURSDAY All classes have been very busy preparing for this special event and the students are keen to share their skills on the night. The preparation over many weeks has seen fine qualities in our students shining through – team work and persistence, along with enhancing their performing arts skills. Thank you for your support in relation to the organisation of this special evening that I’m sure will be a highlight of our school year. We would like to particularly acknowledge Suzy Bolger, our Arts teacher, for leading this event. As you know, there is much work behind the scenes over many weeks to ensure all goes smoothly on this special evening. REVIEWING OUR SCHOOL AND WRITING OUR NEXT STRATEGIC PLAN Thank you to those families who have taken the time to provide some feedback to us prior to us undertaking our 2017 School Self Evaluation via the Survey Monkey link. This is an opportunity for parents to reflect on our school, its current programs along with our strengths and areas for future focus. Your feedback is valued. HALF YEAR STUDENT REPORTS & PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parents will receive their child/children’s report next week on Wednesday. Ongoing formal and informal assessment of students is an integral part of our teaching and learning. I remind parents that this semester our teachers will be reporting against the new Victorian Curriculum for the first time. As we transition to this curriculum, there will obviously be some modifications to our report format. With the advent of the Victorian Curriculum we believe it is timely to review our reporting practices and over the coming months we will be working with staff and parents to reflect on our student report format in line with DET guidelines and parent needs. More information will be shared in relation to this later this term.

Parent – Teacher interviews and Three-way Conferences will occur on Thursday 27th July with full details on a flyer being sent home on the first day of term 3. We will again be using an online booking procedure, which has worked extremely well in the past FIRST AID PROCEDURES AT SCHOOL I remind parents that if children are very sick or more seriously injured at school or on excursions or camps and parents or their emergency contact person cannot be contacted by phone, we are obliged to ring an ambulance to take the child to the doctor or hospital. DET does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the costs of medical treatment for injured students including medical transport. Teachers cannot take children to the doctor or hospital in private cars. The cost of the ambulance will be the responsibility of the parents. This can be very expensive unless parents have ambulance subscription. It is very important parents consider taking out ambulance cover. Health Care Card holders receive free ambulance service (children’s names must be on the Health Care Card). Staff Professional Learning As part of the DET guidelines, staff undertook the annual refresher session in the area of CPR earlier this term. Yesterday staff attended an after school session extending their knowledge of anaphylaxis and the use of Epipens. Our Anaphylaxis Policy and Asthma Policy have both been updated this year and can be found on the school website. LAST DAY OF TERM The last day of term 2 is this Friday, 30th June. The children finish school at 2.30pm; they will be dismissed from their classrooms. I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday, 17th July when we commence another great term. I hope you’re able to take the opportunity to rest a little, enjoying a change of pace on these cooler days with family and friends. STAYING RELEVANT IN A DIGITAL WORLD - Parenting ideas by Michael Gross, Parent Educator As technology continues to advance and our lives become more immersed in everything digital, the challenges faced by parents can often feel overwhelming. How do we ensure that our kids are getting the very best that the technology has to offer whilst avoiding the negative elements? Be the Wise ones Well they may well have a lot of knowledge when it comes to all things technical. But they are not necessarily wise like us. Now I use the word ‘us’ very loosely here in referring to the adult population, because anyone who has spent any time online knows there are many adults who are not wise. But generally speaking, adults have a lot more understanding of the intricacies of interactions, relationships and the complexities of human behaviours than kids do. Our kids are interacting and connecting with others in a world that is often beyond what they are developmentally and emotionally ready for. We need to help them with that. Play and interact Sure we all love the lure of an iPad to ensure we can finish our coffee whilst it’s hot or get the dinner cooked uninterrupted. But if we also take the time to play and interact with our kids and their devices, we get a different perspective about what they enjoy. We get the bonus of the interactive element as well as time to bond and enjoy something together. We also put ourselves in a much better position to set relevant boundaries and help them understand those boundaries. Listen to others and listen to your child

If your friend’s child is playing a game, has an account on social media or enjoys certain websites, then there is a good chance your child does too. Just as we would play at the park or hang out at the milk bar where our friends were when we were young, so too our kids will hang out where their mates are playing. So listen to those parents in the playground. Listen in to which popular apps and games are spoken about in the media. Listen to your child. Ask them what they like to do. Ask them about their concerns or their challenges. You may never keep up with every single app or site that your child visits, but if you have a good understanding of the ways kids are using technology and the sorts of things the technology is capable of, then you are in a much better position to help them use it safely and smartly. Be open and honest about what is out there Whilst there are times we certainly lament the passing of the good old days where screens, and social media were not such an integral part of our lives, we cannot afford to be in denial about the role technology is and will continue to play in the lives of our children. So rather than shut it down and try to avoid it, we need to be ready to have conversations that we may prefer not to have. We need to know that the average age a child first sees pornography is about 11, so we should understand that this is a very real possibility for our children. So how are we going to prepare them for that? What conversations would we need to have if we suspect this has happened? Because we do want to make sure that the education they are getting comes from us and not from the online world itself.

PYJAMA DAY On Tuesday the 27

th of June, the Carnegie Primary Junior School

Council is holding a Pyjama Day to raise money for the Salvation

Army charity. We would like all students to wear their pyjamas

to school and bring a gold coin donation. If you would like to bring

your slippers, you are allowed to wear them during class time.

This fundraiser will help the Australian Salvation Army provide over

one hundred thousand meals for the homeless and hungry.

Just by wearing your pyjamas and bringing in a gold coin do-

nation you could help change the lives of people who are

less fortunate than you and me.

BOOK DONATIONS Many thanks to Jack and Edward Curwood for kindly donating a very large pile of their

pre-loved books to our school. The boys were excited to pass on books that they have enjoyed
