From the Headmaster

Dear Members of the Devon Prep Family,

It is often said that it is impossible for something to be “all things for all people.” This may or may not be true.

Let us consider Devon Prep, a school loved and appreciated by many. Following the educational philosophy of Saint Joseph Calasanctius, the Piarist Fathers and their like-minded lay colleagues have provided our Devon Prep students with a strong foundation for success, both in the academic world and in the wider world beyond. Simply stated, our goal at Devon Prep is to educate the whole person.

Our dedicated faculty and staff lead and encourage every young man to discover and develop his individual strengths and talents to find his rightful place in Godʹs creation. Every year, our students discoveries bring great joy to themselves, their families and their school. Their accomplishments span both the school year and the summer. During the past school year our young men earned numerous academic awards and many scholarships and acceptances to fine colleges and universities. The same is true during the summer. In June, our varsity baseball team brought home our first-ever PIAA State championship trophy, capping off a tremendously successful year of competition. In July, our Solar Car Team members used their knowledge and skills to earn a third-place trophy in a national competition in Texas.

Our alumni (both current and future ones) continue to make us proud. Father Francis X. Altiere ‘00 was ordained to the sacred priesthood in August. Many alumni who are successful in their chosen fields attribute to Devon Prep a good part of the reason for their success. Over 150 of our alumni have kindly volunteered their time to mentor our younger alumni and our present students as they discern their future path.

As you page through this yearʹs Annual Report of Gifts, please join me in thanking so many in the Devon Prep Family for their wonderful generosity—generosity that allows us to continue the legacy of opportunity that Devon Prep provides.

Finally, I ask for your prayers and for your generous support of our Annual Fund, which is fundamental to continuing this legacy.

May God bless you and those dear to you now and always. Gratefully,

Rev. James J. Shea, Sch.P. Headmaster

Our Mission

Devon Preparatory School is a private, Catholic, college Preparatory School for young men in grades six through twelve. Devon Prep’s approach to education is based on the traditions of the Piarist Fathers who are dedicated to the education of youth.

For more than 50 years Devon Prep has provided a trusting and supportive atmosphere where young men are motivated to excel academically, think independently and creatively, to pursue careers in diverse fields and to enjoy extracurricular activities both in school and in the community.

It is the goal of Devon Prep to inspire in our students a commitment to values that will enable them to become responsible leaders. Focusing on each student’s potential, we believe that the school and the family must work together to foster a love of learning which will propel the student into a life-long quest for excellence—for the glory of God and the service of neighbor.

Annual Report of Gi s 2013-14 3

Page 4: Devon Prep Annual Report of Gifts 2013-14

A G Gi s to the Annual Fund are an important part of the School’s development program. Annual Giving helps to promote quality instruc on, defray the cost of needed renova ons and repairs, provide scholarships and financial aid for deserving students, and secure the growth of Devon Prep. Gi s to the Annual Fund may be unrestricted, or may be directed to a specific concern or area of interest.

WHERE THE NEED IS GREATEST Unrestricted gi s to the Annual Fund are preferred because they will be used in the areas of greatest need. By allowing your gi to be used where the need is greatest you give Devon Prep an important degree of flexibility in responding to the evolving financial needs of the school and to con nuing its tradi on of providing an excellent educa on.

A P Gi s directed to the Devon Prep Athle c Department support our student athletes and teams by helping to pay for uniforms, equipment, facili es enhancements and travel.

Technology Advancement Gi s to the Technology Program enable Devon Prep to keep pace with the latest advances in the instruc onal uses of technology and supports infrastructure upgrades.

Scholarship Funds While unrestricted gi s to the Annual Giving Campaign provide Devon Prep with opera ng funds to help maintain the quality of its academic programs, scholarship gi s enable the school to award scholarship aid to deserving students. Funds earmarked for scholarships will be used to finance full and/or par al scholarships that are awarded yearly for academic achievement.

You may also give or gain a li le immortality while making a las ng impact on future genera ons through the gi of an endowed scholarship in your name or in the name of someone you would like to honor.

E Funds designed for Endowment will help secure the future growth and stability of Devon Prep. Endowed Funds are permanent funds that are invested in order to provide income, thereby providing strength for the school indefinitely into the future.

M G The easiest way to maximize your gi to Devon Prep is through corporate matching gi s. Donors (or their spouses) employed by companies with matching gi programs can double or even triple their contribu ons by designa ng Devon Preparatory School as the recipient of matching gi s.

U W Devon Prep is eligible to par cipate in the Donor Choice Program of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. During the United Way’s annual campaign, donors may designate a gi to Devon Prep on the Donor Choice pledge/designa on form through Specific Care.

Devon Prep is classified as a “non-member agency,” and listed as DEVON PREP, 363 Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333, with I.D. #04636. The assigned iden fica on number is consistent from year to year.

G A P A gi of stock, real estate or other appreciated property can provide vital support to Devon Prep as well as tax advantages to the donor. In many cases, a donor can avoid capital gains tax by gi ing appreciated assets to Devon Prep instead of selling them and dona ng the proceeds.

G K Devon Prep gratefully accepts gi s of supplies, books, and equip-ment. Tax deduc ons are available for firms contribu ng gi s in kind to educa onal ins tu ons.

B Providing for Devon Prep is as easy as adding a phrase to your will. You may wish to consider naming Devon Prep to receive all or part of your estate. Through careful planning you can protect your family and also contribute to the financial security of Devon Prep.

M T G A memorial or tribute gi is a meaningful way to honor a life or celebrate a special occasion. Memorial giving to Devon Prep is a caring way to honor the life of a friend, colleague or loved one. A commemora ve gi is also a great way to pay tribute to or honor someone on a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, or other special event. Acknowledgment of the gi is made directly to the family or designated individual.

E I T C P (EITC) O S T C P (OSTC) Devon Prep is eligible to receive corporate gi s through two programs offered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania: the Educa onal Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) Program. Companies that do business and pay corporate taxes in Pennsylvania receive substan al tax credits for dona ons to Devon Preparatory School’s student financial aid program. The EITC Program and the recently established OSTC Program, which benefits students who reside in underperforming school districts, each provide a wonderful oppor-tunity for Devon Preparatory School and for our corporate donors. Our financial aid program, which provides financial assistance to needy students, is currently funded by individual contribu ons to the school. Corporate support through the EITC Program and the OSTC Program provide financial aid funds which allow us to offer access to a private school educa on to more students, who may otherwise not be able to a end Devon Prep. The process is simple. Visit www.newpa.com for more informa on on these programs or contact the Development Office for more informa on.

Alumni Mentor Program “The Alumni Mentor Program really gave me a new perspec ve on the field I want to get into. It really helped me decide on the career path I want to take for the years to come.” Sean O’Brien ’15

Devon Prep’s Alumni Mentor Program, sponsored by the Alumni Rela ons Office, is now in its the third year. The program links Devon Prep students to alumni in prospec ve fields of interest. Devon graduates share valuable college and career experiences with students and assist in “coaching” them as they earn their degrees and begin their careers. Devon Prep students have expressed interest in Business, Medicine, Computer Science, Engineering, Law, Educa on, Armed Forces, and Culinary Arts (among others).

Over 150 alumni from around the world (including England, China and Afghanistan) have commi ed to the program since its incep on. According to Jus n Polselli ’04 the program not only benefits Devon Prep students, but the alumni as well.

“It allows you to draw an even deeper connec on with the school and its well being by having direct interac on with students,” Jus n explained. “I shared my experiences on some of the key things that have helped me be successful in business including networking, gaining early experience and ge ng your first job. Helping to develop the next genera on of Devon students includes both in and out of the classroom experiences and I’m happy to be able to contribute my experiences and skillset to benefit students as they develop.”

Alumni Golf Outing The weather didn’t exactly cooperate for Devon Prep’s 2013 Golf Ou ng on October 7 at Bellewood Golf Club but that didn’t stop the soggy golfers from trying. Not everyone made it to the 18th hole but they had a good

me anyway, especially this year’s winners Ed Curran ’88, Brendan Curran, Nick Meter ’88 and Bob Kershner.

Students Compete in PBS 39’s Scholastic Scrimmage

Five members of Devon Prep’s Academic Challenge Team (ACT), under the direc on of their moderator Mr. Roger Mecouch, par cipated in the PBS 39 Scholas c Scrimmage TV show. The par cipants included, Seniors Kevin Sheng, Andrew

Bright, and Sean Bevan, as well as Juniors Joshua Lieberman and Chris an Nave.

Scholas c Scrimmage is a televised quiz bowl game show involving over 30 high schools and airing on PBS 39 WLVT-TV and WPSU-TV. Dr. Karen Walton, Provost of DeSales University, serves as the host. For 40 years PBS 39 has been producing the popular high school academic compe on where contestants try to answer ques ons more quickly than members of the opposite team. At the end of the season the winning team receives $4000 for its scholarship fund and the runner-up receives $2000.

In their first match Devon Prep competed against William Allen High School in Allentown and won by a large margin. Unfortunately they didn’t fair as well in their second match against Allentown Central Catholic High School.

According to Mr. Mecouch the team members were a li le nervous at first but seemed to relax as the show got underway. “They were very excited to be on the show and did a great job,” he said. “We all look forward to going back next year.”

It may have been dreary and cold outside, but inside Devon Prep on the day before Thanksgiv-ing it was warm and bright as the school filled with Grandparents and Special Others happy to visit with their special Devon student. Our Annual Grandparents and Special Others Day drew nearly 200 guests for a morning brunch and concert conducted by Dr. Valen n Radu and showcasing the musical talents of many of our students. At the end of the event, there were smiles all around as the boys and their guests were off to begin their Thanksgiving holiday together.

I t may have been Friday the 13th but bad luck was not a problem for Devon Prep’s Varsity

Baseball team as they won the PIAA Class A State Championship against Elk County Catholic on June 13 on Medlar Field on the Penn State University campus. They had their lucky charm with them, Pat Na le, as well as their great coaching staff, tons of talent, and even more heart.

A er an hour long rain delay in addi on to a late start, the game finally got underway at 6 PM nearly two and a half hours later than scheduled. Elk County Catholic scored first in the 4th inning with one run. In the 6th inning Junior Sean Phelan hit a shallow fly ball to le field that scored Senior CJ Kohlbrenner from third and ed the game 1-1.

That’s where the score remained as the game went into extra innings un l Senior Chris Bauers stole third base with two outs in the bo om of the ninth. A rushed throw from Elk County Catholic’s catcher to their third baseman forced an error. Chris ran down the 3rd baseline and slid head first into home plate winning Devon Prep the first state champion-ship in school history with a final score of 2-1.

Baseball Team Wins Devon Prep’s First State Championship

The team exploded onto the field piling on top of Bauers as the numerous Devon Prep spectators who made the 3 hour trip to State College went wild. When they returned to the Devon area at 1:15 AM the team bus was escorted onto campus by a Berwyn Fire Company truck with lights flashing and the siren blaring.

Devon Prep finished the season with a 16-8 record and also won the District I

tle. For its late-season resolve and thrilling finish, The Philadelphia Inquirer named Devon Prep South-eastern Pennsylvania Baseball Team of the Year.

Congratula ons to the en re team: Freshmen Joe Orsa , Ma Szkolnicki, and James Lo us; Sopho-

“Ethical, purpose-driven leaders. That’s what I want to see in the world, and that’s what my contribution to Devon helps create. Devon graduates are prepared to act in ways that put the well-being of their fellow humans and their planet before personal gain and self-interest. So I am happy to write that check because I know my contribution, though small, is part of a bigger, brighter, more promising future.” Mrs. Jennifer Gregory Devon Prep Faculty

T he Devon Panel, Devon Prep’s Solar Car Team, earned a Third Place trophy in

the 2014 Solar Car Challenge in Texas, the only interna onal solar car challenge opened exclusively to high school students.

This year 19 out of 131 solar car teams in 28 states qualified to compete. They included teams from New York, Florida, Texas, Califor-nia, Michigan, and Mississippi. Devon Prep is the only Pennsylvania team to par cipate.

Devon Prep’s Team included recent gradu-ates Mike Horbowy (co-captain), Ben Conser (co-captain), Sean Kennedy; Seniors Albert

Emanuel Milani, Evan Hennessy, Soham Bharne (co-captain), Russell Emery, Nick Ippoli , Alex Carandang; Junior Jus n Hen-nessy; and Sophomores Riley McCarthy and David Haruch.

This is the fourth me Devon’s team compet-ed in the Solar Car Challenge. In 2011 and 2012 the en re race took place on the Texas Motor Speedway. The Devon Panel came in fourth place in 2011 and second place in 2012. Last year the team took fourth place in the 884 mile open road race from Dallas to Los Angeles.

This year’s Challenge was a hybrid event with two days driving laps on the Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, and two days on the open road driving from Fort Worth to Aus n. Between the speedway and the open road race Devon Prep’s solar car, Sol Tide, logged 402.6 miles in the 95+ degree Texas heat.

Sol Tide, which was built in 2010, measures about 16 feet long and weighs nearly 900 pounds. It is covered with five solar panels that power four 69-pound ba eries. It can travel as fast as 40 mph, but was driven an average of 23 mph throughout most of the recent race.

The open road por on of the race included hours of driving through small towns and on major highways sharing the roads with trucks, buses and cars.

According to Co-captain Soham Bharne it was exci ng but some mes scary. “It was terrifying because we would be driving in 75 mile an hour zones and trucks would go flying by you. Some carrying wide loads.”

Co-captain Ben Conser summed it all up. “The experiences that we had during the compe -

on were invaluable,” he said. “We hope that this club con nues to grow and thrive in the years to come.”

W hen Class of 2014 Salutatori-an Kevin Sheng, took to the stage at the beginning of Devon Prep’s

Commencement Ceremony he didn’t just welcome everyone, he issued a challenge to his classmates. He challenged his classmates to use the past to be er the future.

“Instead of dwelling on the past, we should look to the future. We should use the lessons we have learned, the experiences we have undergone, and the rela onships we have nurtured in order to succeed in this next stage of our life and beyond,” he said.

“This is the true nature of the Devon experi-ence. It is not about what we did; it is about what we will do. Therein lies the true value of these past four years. Devon has cul vated in each and every one of us the ability to influ-ence the world, each in our own way. So go out and do it. Change the world.”

Collec vely the 40 young men in the school’s 55th gradua ng class earned over $5.3 million in academic scholarships. In addi on they received nearly 200 acceptances to more than 75 colleges and universi es, including the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Dart-mouth, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Lehigh, Case Western Reserve, Fordham, Drexel and Penn State.

Nearly half (18) of Devon Prep’s Class of 2014 are AP Scholars. Twelve are AP Scholars with Dis nc on. Six were recognized by the Na-

onal Merit Scholarship Program, two as Commended Students, two as Finalists and

In addi on, this senior class performed over 1500 hours of community service doing such things as collec ng and distribu ng food and clothing to needy families, repairing homes in Oil City, PA, and raising more than $24,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

One young man, James O’Shea, logged more than 200 hours of community service as Presi-dent of Devon Prep’s Chris an Ac on Program and as a volunteer at Lankenau Medical Center. Last year he received the Gold Level Presiden-

al Volunteer Service Award for his dedica on to serving others through his work at Lankenau.

In addi on to Kevin, Valedictorian Andrew Bright also addressed the Class of 2014. For Andrew the years spent at Devon Prep were filled with memories. “My me here at Devon has seemed to go by in the blink of an eye while paradoxically las ng a life me,” he told his fellow graduates. “In the past few weeks, it has become evident that my me here has not been measured in years but in memories. Devon is not an ins tu on, or a group of people, or a place. It is an ineffable feeling. The essence of Devon is to carry on the tradi-

on that has been le to you.”

The Commencement guest speaker was Region-al Director for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for Northeastern United States Ms. Maureen McCullough, Esq.

In addi on Devon Prep Class of 1972 Alumnus Mr. Kevin Magee received the Alumni Achieve-ment Award. This award is presented annually to an alumnus who has significantly influenced and benefi ed his profession.
