Maintenance Strategy & Failure Analysis
Presented by: Devin GavinSummer 2014
2
Maintenance Strategy and Failure Analysis Puts maintenance strategies in place for all equipment
across PHI. Responsible for reliability and performance of
equipment. Failure analysis helps determine action to take to
improve reliability.
3
What I Did: Overview Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)
monitor project Failure Analysis
fieldwork/reporting Maintenance Strategy
database updating
4
On-Line Dissolved Gas Analysis What’s on-line DGA?• Real-time remote monitoring• Shows abnormal conditions• Time to plan
What’s Doble Delphi?• Detects 4 gases• Currently installed on one
transformer in the field• How it works
5
On-Line Dissolved Gas Analysis Results• Installation• Further Review• Parallel Project (Qualitrol)
Importance• Preventing faults and failures• Reduce cost• Improve reliability and safety
6
Failure Analysis Inspected Feeder 69031 after 6/19 storm and prepared
report Observed transformer teardowns Prepared a GE transformer teardown report
7
Maintenance Strategy Updated Underground Failure Database Added MAT description and location information to the
Scheduled Units database for analysis. Created pivot tables for tracking the number of
scheduled units completed so far in 2014 across PHI. Compiled substation inspection reports for COMAR
Audits.
8
Failure Analysis and Maintenance Strategy Results• Failures were recorded and reported to other PHI
departments.• Databases were updated to be ready for analysis.
Importance• Failures must be analyzed and reported to recommend
changes to improve the reliability of equipment.• Scheduled unit and Manhole event spreadsheets can be
used for analysis .• Substation reports are prepared for upcoming audits.
