New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur seeks its first Director of Development. Reporting to the Vice Prior, the Director will leadthe development efforts for the Hermitage. A new position within the organization, the Director will have the opportunity to growthe development efforts. This is a part-time position (30 hours/week).

ORGANIZATION

Located in the rugged coastal mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California, New Camaldoli Hermitage wasfounded in 1958. The three elements of the Camaldolese charism are: solitude for personal prayer and meditation, communalprayer and work within the monastery, and contemplative outreach. Camaldolese Benedictine monks trace their heritage to the 6th

century monastic traditions of Saint Benedict. Saint Romuald, our founder, further defined these traditions in the 11th

century.Founded in 1027, the Hermitage at Camaldoli, Italy serves as the motherhouse of the Order. Today, Camaldolese monasteries arefound in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America. We also have an urban monastery located in Berkeley, California.Annually, thousands of individuals seek our retreat experience for solitude and contemplation. We are known for our Brandy-dipped Fruitcakes and recently started producing Holy Granola.

Previously, the Hermitage worked with a Development Consultant who instituted a basic fundraising program including Annual

Appeals, a newsletter, Planned Giving Program, and a donor database.

We are seeking a highly qualified, dedicated individual to fill the position of Director of Development. This person must be self-motivated and able to work independently as s/he successfully develops and implements a strategic and comprehensiveDevelopment Plan for this $1.5 million non-profit organization. The successful candidate will be passionate about his/her work, astrategic thinker, and strong communicator and listener. Authenticity, trustworthiness, confidence, and patience are all traits thatwill be valued.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Development will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of the fundraising activities of theHermitage. Activities involve Annual Appeals, including Online Giving, Major Gift Solicitation, Prospect Research, Database anRecords Management, Communications and Public Relations, Special Events, Grant Writing, and supervising staff. His/her

primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Fundraising

o Develop and implement an Annual Development Plan, including a Development Budget and reasonable, attainablefundraising goals and milestones

o Track progress toward revenue and expense goals for Development and Communications activitieso Create a compelling Case Statement for supporto Design and implement strategy for annual and special mail and online appealso Plan and administrate a volunteer Development Committeeo Research and identify potential foundation donors; submit proposals to key prospects; cultivate foundation

relationshipso If deemed appropriate, contract with external experts/consultants and manage these relationships

brand, including consistent visual identity and messaging in all printed and electronic materialso Create other organizational literature as needed (e.g., brochures)

o Responsible for Development pages on the Hermitage website Supervision of Development Associate and Data Entry Staff 

o Manage and train Development Associateo Supervise Data Entry Staff 

QUALIFICATIONSRequired

Bachelor’s degree 

Minimum 3-5 years experience in Development, with proven track record of success

Proven ability to recruit, train, and manage a volunteer fundraising committee

Strong communication skills

Self-motivated

Ability to work independently Ability to adapt to different audiences

Well-organized

Detail-oriented

Good computer skills and knowledge of database programs

Basic accounting proficiency, including preparing budgets and financial reportsDesirable

Knowledge of and interest in the Catholic church and Benedictine monasteries

Experience in a similar organization

Knowledge of philanthropic community in Monterey Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and San Francisco Bay Area, as well asSouthern California

Knowledge of and understanding of current and future fundraising trends

Demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically and execute on multiple priorities simultaneously

Compensation: $50,000-$60,000, commensurate with experience, for 30 hours/week Location: Central Coast of California region preferred, however there is some flexibilityStart Date: Immediate

Monterey Museum of Art Development Officer  

The Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) seeks an energetic and seasoned professional to managethe Development office. The Development Officer reports to the Executive Director and isresponsible for the successful implementation of the Museum’s development plan. Foundation

research and grant writing is a major aspect of this position, along with cultivation of donors formajor gifts and sponsorships. The Development Officer works closely with the MembershipCoordinator on fundraising and member events along with the Communications and CuratorialDepartments.

Successful candidates should possess an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field, inaddition to three to five years of progressive fund-raising experience, preferably in an artsorganization. Knowledge of fundraising in the arts and museums and a proven track record insecuring foundation, corporate and individual funding are required. Superb organizational and

writing skills are essential.
