IMPORTANT!Prior to installing and operating the winch, please read this manual thoroughly andcarefully. Keep this manual and all other instructions accessible at all times.

Although this manual will help you become familiarized with the operating procedures forthe winch, it is by no means a substitute for proper training and the safe use of winches, barge rigging and other marine equipment. Because owners and operators are solelyresponsible for determining whether a particular usage is acceptable, only individualstrained in the proper use of winches, barge rigging and other marine equipment shouldoperate winches.

The typical operational environment of winches includes very high forces, and the potentialhazards associated with these forces should not be underestimated.Improper installation or misuse of the winch may result in injury to persons or causeequipment failure or damage.

ALWAYS OBSERVE THESE BASIC SAFETYPRECAUTIONS:

• Keep all loose clothing and any foreign objects away while operating the winch.• During release of the winch, always stand to the side of the winch opposite the handwheel.

• Never operate the winch with bystanders near.• Operators and bystanders should stay clear of the wire rope while the winch is beingoperated.• Under no circumstances should any winch be used to move, raise or lower a person(s) orequipment.• Do not operate the winch unless you have a firm stance on a non-slippery surface.• Do not stand or jump on the extension pipe. Severe injury could result from such actions.• Never let go of the ratchet handle under tension. It can snap forward and can causeserious injury. Also, the ratchet extension can fly off the ratchet handle and cause injury, even at a distance.• If tension on the wire rope is too much to be controlled with reasonable force by theoperator, maneuver the barges to relieve tension.

• Always position the ratchet handle in the rear resting position with dog disengagedimmediately after winch operation. To leave the handle in any other position is unsafe.• Inspect the winch regularly for worn gears, pawls and bearings, cracked welds, loose nutsor bolts or any other damaged or worn parts. If any worn, cracked, loose or damaged partsare found, stop use immediately and remove the winch from service until all appropriaterepairs are completely made.

1. INSTALLATION

1.1. All winches must be installed on flat, rigid and non-slippery surfaces. The deckand structure of the barge must be strongenough to withstand the weight andholding capacity of the winch, and theforces likely to occur during operation. The winch must be installed using eitherthe supplied leveling washer or a ½”doubler plate for proper operation.

NOTE: The Patterson YoYo winch was designed to have a ½” X 12” diameter doublerplate welded into place between the stud mount base and the barge deck as shown in thefollowing illustrations. The doubler plate allows straight-line interaction between the wirerope and winch making full contact with the stud mount pin. The doubler plate also allowsthe winch to swivel with a minimal amount of effort by reducing the contact area of thewinch to the barge deck.

1.2. Place the winch and studmount assembly in the appropriate

area. Make sure the deck in thewinch swivel area is smooth andclear of obstructions. Check thatthere is enough clearance forproper operation of the ratchethandle. With extension on theratchet handle, rotate the handle tothe front and rear of the winch toensure proper clearance. Also, swivel the winch into its possibleoperating positions and againensure that there is sufficient room

and clearance for operation with theextension on the ratchet handle. After separating the winch from thestud mount assembly, (optional)weld the doubler plate down andthen weld the stud mount all aroundusing a seal weld to protect fromcorrosion.

NOTE: The welds have to be strong enough towithstand loads equal to or greater than theBrake/Dog Holding Capacity of the winch.

1.3. To attach the winch to the studmount assembly, place the winchon the stud and so the stud extends

up through the mounting block atthe bottom of the winch. Then placethe base cap on top of the mountingstud, insert the bolt and tighten.

NOTE: (optional only if not using doubler) place the leveling washerover the stud and place the winchover the stud so the stud extendsup through the mounting block atthe bottom of the winch.

2. ATTACHING WIRE

The Patterson YoYo barge connecting winch comes with two distinctly different wireattachment methods.

2A. Wire Rope Clips2B. Rope Socket

The Patterson YoYo barge connecting winch has been designed with 25 feet ofadjustment and its proper operation requires the use of a specific wire to allow for this andto prevent exceeding the capacity of the winch. Below are examples of the wires thatshould be used with both of the above connection methods.

Wire design for use with Rope Clips (2A)

Wire design for use with Rope Socket (2B)

3. Applying Tension to the winch3.1. Rotate knockout handle toward the front of the winchwhich will engage the locking dog to the ratchet wheel andprevent rope payout.

3.2. Rotate hand wheel toward the front of the winch to wind inand tighten the rope.

3.3. When the hand wheel can no longer be turned, additionaltension can be added by using an extension pipe on theratchet handle.

3.4. Slip an extension pipe over the end of the ratchet handle.

3.5. Rotate the extension pipe and ratchet towards the front of

the winch into a near horizontal position.

3.6. Check to make sure the ratchet handle dog is completelyengaged in the ratchet wheel

3.7. Apply downward force to the extension pipe(with palms open ) to spool in and tension the wire rope.

3.8. Lift the ratchet up and backward to engage a different toothon the ratchet handle, ratchet wheel.

3.9. Repeat Steps 3.5 through 3.8 until desired tension isachieved.

WARNING! DO NOT STAND OR JUMP ON THE EXTENSION PIPE!SEVERE INJURY COULD RESULT!

3.10. When desired tension is achieved rotate the ratchet handle to the rear of the winch and intothe rear rest position with the ratchet handle dog disengaged. The locking dog will continue to holdtension on the winch.

WARNING! DO NOT OPERATE THE WINCH UNDER EXTREME TENSION. IF TENSION ISTOO MUCH TO BE CONTROLLED WITH REASONABLE FORCE BY THE OPERATOR, THEN

MANEUVER THE BARGES TO RELIEVE TENSION

3.11. Remove the extension pipe and store it in its proper place.

WARNING! NEVER LEAVE THE EXTENSION PIPE ON THE RATCHET HANDLE.NEVER LEAVE THE RATCHET HANDLE DOG ENGAGED IN THE RATCHET WHEEL.

SEVERE INJURY COULD RESULT!

4. Releasing the load

The Patterson YoYo barge connecting winch comes in two distinctly different styles forreleasing the load.

4A. Releasing the load on a winch with a brake.4B. Releasing the load on a winch without a brake.

The load releasing brake is used for controlling the payoff of the wire from the winch asthe load is being released.

4A. Releasing the load on a winch with a brake. 4B. Releasing the load on a winch without a brake.

4A. Releasing the load on a winch with a brake.

4A.1. Make sure the areas around the winch and loads are clear.

4A.2. Make sure the ratchet handle is in the rearposition and the dog has been completelydisengaged from the ratchet wheel.

4A.3. Move to the brake side of the winch.

4A.4. Turn the brake handle toward the back ofthe winch to tighten the brake disk against thewinch side plate.

4A.5. Rotate the knockout handle toward the rear of the winch, this will cause the lockingdog to disengage from the ratchet wheel teeth.

4A.6. Return to the brake side of the winch and slowly turn the brake handle toward the front of thewinch. The slow release of the brake allows a controlled pay-out of the wire rope. Use the brakehandle to tighten or to loosen the brake in order to maintain desired pay-out control.

WARNING! ALWAYS PLACE THE RATCHET HANDLE IN THEREAR RESTING POSITION IMMEDIATELY AFTER WINCHOPERATION. ANY OTHER POSITION IS UNSAFE.

4B. Releasing the load on a winch without a brake.

4B.1. Make sure the area around the winch is clear ofdebris or foreign objects.

4B.2. Make sure the ratchet handle dog has beencompletely disengaged from the ratchet wheel inthe ratchet handle. Also make sure the ratchet

handle is in the rear rest position. At this time thelocking dog is maintaining the tension on the winch. While standing to the brake wheel side of thewinch, rotate the knockout handle toward the rearof the winch. This will cause the locking dog todisengage and allow the operator to release theload. Free wheeling of the winch can be minimized with proper use of an optionalbrake.
