Fact and Figures:

In 2006, the area planted to

cocoa was more or less 10,000

ha. with a production of about

5,400 tons, with two thirds of

the production coming from

Davao region.

Right now in Mindanao, there

are only 20,000 hectares of

cacao farms and of this figure

5,000 hectares are in Davao

Region

In 2008, the estimated volume

of production is 6,000 to 7,000

tons, with more than 95 percent

used in the local market and our

net import is more than 20,000

tons of cocoa bean equivalent

The potential expansion area

for cocoa is with in excess of

2,000,000 ha of coconut lands

highly suited to interplanting

with cocoa.

The international demand for

cocoa beans is growing at about

90,000 tons annually

Southeast Asian regional

grinders need an additional

220,000 tons which they have to

import from Africa and other

distant areas

The Davao Region now has a

total of 110 cocoa nurseries

with a combined production

capacity of 2.7 million seedlings

per year
