Red Lodge has been hosting the annual Beartooth Rally since July of 1995. Since the Rally’s inception it has been held on the third weekend in July. Though the Rally is a weekend event you can see many amazing bikes and vendors of all sorts start arriving throughout the week to set up camp and enjoy all Red Lodge has to offer. The local main street turns into a gallery for viewing many odd, unique and beautiful bikes.

The Beartooth Rally brings people from all parts of the world together to enjoy the many motorcycles, people, and beautiful scenic drives around Red Lodge. As the weekend approaches the streets will start to fill with motorcycles of all shapes and sizes. The motorcycles’ chrome accents shimmer on the streets as the leather-

wrapped riders walk up and down the main street with shopping bags and to-go cups in hand.

As the weekend’s festivities begin to kick off, the riders start preparing for the graceful curves on the Beartooth

Highway that ascends up to 10,947 feet and wraps back around to the Chief Joseph/Sunlight Basin Highway.

The annual Poker Run will take you high up this scenic Beartooth Highway with

views sure to take your breath away. In addition to the Poker Run there are street dances with music and bands, an additional poker run and a golf tournament. Winding out the week is the Iron Horse Rodeo at the Home of Champions Rodeo Grounds.

Once the Beartooth Rally has ended you will find you have new friends and a new fondness for Red Lodge. A community that does not roll up its main street but rolls it out embracing your friendships, support, and welcomes you back year after year, not just for this Rally but also to come and enjoy our skiing, hiking, fishing, and year-round fun for the family.

of curves in the road ahead were named the “Mae West curve” after the buxom and sassy star of the 1930s. There even used to be a sign saying so, but as local legend has it, it was taken down because it was “too risque.” Really.

16-26 mileS (approx.) — viewS of hellroaring plateau Look across the valley to your right; that plateau is called Hellroaring for a reason, and not just because it’s always windy. The road climbing that side of the valley covers the same elevation gain in half the miles, and it’s dirt, with no guard rails! It’s not for the faint-of-heart, but it sure is fun. :)

23.9 mileS — State line anD 45th parallel Selfie time!! Until someone sends us a selfie proving us wrong, we’re gonna stick with our story that this is this highest elevation state Welcome sign in the U.S. Cuz that’s how we roll. (It’s also the 45th Parallel, meaning you’re now exactly

halfway between the North Pole and the Equator.)

the beartooth highway, by the MileInstructions: set your trip odometer to zero at the Bearcreek bridge on the south end of town (Junction of Hwy 308 & Hwy 212). Mileage is south from that point.

0 mileS — reSet your oDometer ….aaaaaaand, you’re off!! See you in Yellowstone Park!!

14-22 mileS (approx.) — rock creek SwitchBackS We’re climbing, and climbing, and climbing…! Starting at 8,000’ elevation at the bottom of the switchbacks, you climb over 1,500’ in these 7 miles. (Note: Wondering what those huge chain-link fences are all about? In May of 2005, a week before the Highway was scheduled to open, nine inches of rain fell in three days up here, causing a massive mudslide that tore down the canyon, dislodging more 500,000 cubic tons of rock and closing the highway. Incidentally, the reconstruction effort that summer cost $20 million — the same amount, adjusted for inflation, that was originally spent to build the road in the 1930s! For an awesome display of the reconstruction effort, stop in at the Red Lodge Visitor Center.)

19.7 mileS — viSta point reSt area Chipmunk feeding Station, number One! Who remembered to bring the sunflower seeds? (Random trivia: As you leave the parking area, the series

27 mileS — Beartooth BaSin (Formerly the Red Lodge International Ski & Snowboard Camp) How cool is this? 35 bucks for a half-day pass, and you can ski at 10,000’ during summer vacation! (The season ends July 4th weekend depending on snow levels, so check beartoothbasin.com for conditions before you head up.)

28.2 mileS — garDner lake pullout Keep a lookout for mountain goats and skiers on these rock walls (the mountain goats are the ones climbing the slopes on all fours). Since the Gardner Headwall in front of you faces north-east, it gets very little direct sun, so it keeps its snow late into the summer. You’ll see skiers and snowboarders taking turns here almost any time you drive this road.

29.6 mileS — the Bear’S tooth Ever wonder where the Beartooths get their name? Well, it may depend on who you ask. Travel ads from

the 1940s (and old-timers who were here before the road was built) claim that a rock formation atop Beartooth Butte (42.2 miles) is the “Bear’s Tooth.” These days, however, most of us think of the spire jutting up like a fang across the valley from you here as that famous “Tooth.” We may never know for sure, because the name “Beartooth” is a translation of a Crow Indian word: “na piet say,” and so far, we haven’t found record of what exactly those early Crow were referring to. What do you think?

30.5 mileS — weSt Summit overlook We did it! Elevation 10,947’. Who’s gonna climb out to that rock pile with me to make it official? Come on, it’s not that windy!!

37.6 mileS — iSlanD lake Need to get out and stretch your legs after

all those turny-turns? There are lots of short (or much longer) hikes that take off from the boat launch here at the lake. Just make sure you bring a jacket and mosquito repellant, because those tundra-ey bushes are major mosquito breeding grounds. (The mosquitos tend to be less prevalent later in the summer, so if you’re here in August or September, you might not need a transfusion mid-hike.)

38.8 mileS — top of the worlD Store Your One Stop Shop for

gas, snacks, & souvenirs along the Highway. Because the Highway was originally built as a “National Park Approach Road,” it was designed to have minimal development. This store was originally built at Beartooth Lake in 1934, before the Highway was constructed, and was moved to this location in 1964. So it kinda makes you wonder…how do ya s’pose people

wow! what a view! This isn’t a mountain pass, it’s a road that goes to the very summit of a real mountain! I’ll admit that my hands gripped the steering wheel a little hard at times (the road is curvy and WAY up there), but the views were worth it. We had a snowball fight in June! Saw mountain goats. There’s a rest stop part of the way up. Give yourself time--you’ll have to go slow and you’ll want to get out a few times to enjoy the spectacular views!

were getting to the store before they built the road?? Things that make ya go “hmmm……”

40.7 mileS — Beartooth lake & Beartooth Butte Beartooth Lake was once a pretty happening location. Along with the Top of the World Store which was moved two miles east, there were two campgrounds, a lodge, and some commercial and private cabins here. Imagine riding those 40 miles on horseback over rough miners’ and hunters’ trails to get to your summer cabin! In other trivia, marine fossils have been found in the rock of Beartooth Butte — at elevation 10,514. Hmmmmm,….”

42.2 mileS — clay Butte lookout Don’t skip this turnoff! A quick, easy 3-mile gravel road will take you up to an old fire lookout tower, and the views from here really are amazing. Inside, there are some interpretive displays of the 1988 Yellowstone wildfires, which seems like just yesterday but was actually nearly

30 years ago. It gives you a great perspective for driving through the Park.

43.2 mileS — pilot anD inDex peakS overlook In any kind of weather, this Overlook will take your breath away. To the east (your left), you’re looking down the Clark’s Fork River valley and into Wyoming. Can you pick out Heart Mountain, the two-

humped limestone formation to the east of the snowcapped ridges? That’s just north of Cody, Wyoming. The peaks to the south and west of you here are pretty much all in Yellowstone Park. (Just to be clear: Index Peak is the northern one; Pilot is the pointy one due south of it, and they’re both just across the border inside the Park.)

48.6 mileS — lake creek fallS Another Must-Stop location. An easy 200-yard walk will take you to an old footbridge over the creek here. The power of all that water gushing between two massive blocks of granite is truly impressive.

a riDerS Dream roaD69 Miles of zen. Ascend twisty bank turn, oh look! Descend rugged rock skyline, altitude! Switchback lean gravity inertia, I am free! Alpine lakes blue skies sunshine, wild Beartooth! For all I’ve heard about the Tail of the Dragon, it seems to me that some definitely must not be considering Beartooth Pass (or Lolo, or Hana). This is a must ride

road. It is a destination all Its own, sandwiched in between Red Lodge and Cooke City MT. Just do it!

49.9 mileS — chief joSeph Scenic Byway Take the scenic route! (The other scenic route!) Turning left here onto the Chief Joseph Highway will loop you back to Red Lodge through Wyoming, via the Clarks Fork river valley. The first 47 miles take you from the high mountain country out to the grasslands of Wyoming. From there, your view back toward the mountains is a different kind of beautiful, especially if you get the chance to watch thunderheads building over the open prairie.

52.6 mileS — crazy creek fallS & campgrounD If you happen to be here in June, when water levels are high from spring runoff, don’t

miss this falls. (Actually, don’t miss it, whatever season you’re here.) This isn’t one of those 1000-foot-dropoff kinds of falls, but the water pouring and tumbling

over these rocks is mesmerizing. If you’re into that kind of thing.

64 mileS — cooke city & Silver gate Refuel Time!! Food, gasoline, coffee, beer, whichever of your tanks are empty, you can get ‘em filled up in these two lively, make-hay-while-the-sun-shines towns. Largely cut off from the world 8 months of the year, Cooke and Silver Gate pull out the all stops in the summer season. Make friends, support the locals, and help keep these communities strong.

moSt Beautiful roaD ever!We traveled this road during one of our National Park road trips! We traveled from Billings into Red Lodge and then on the Beartooth Pass. Absolutely beautiful! Constant things to look at in awe! The mountains are stunning! Really loved at the top where the snow is 12 feet high in some spots. They plow out the road and it feels like you are driving in a valley of snow! Soo Cool!

Seriously. We’re all a little nuts about getting out and

doing fun stuff around here. Everyone may have their

favorite season, but we’ll all pretty much agree, there’s no

bad time to be in Red Lodge. So if you’re not sure whether

there’ll be anything to do while you’re here, just ask

around. Indoor or outdoor, active or mellow, singletons or

married with children, Red Lodge has got fun on tap.

SightSeeing Take a walking tour of downtown Red Lodge (see page 35 for more information). Or, hop in the car and take in the scenery. The Beartooth All-American Road is a sure bet, or check out other area trips starting on page 55.

wilDlife watching The Beartooth Mountains are home to grizzly and black bears, as well as elk, deer, moose, Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Goats, mountain lions and bobcats. Remember to keep a respectful – and safe – distance between you and our wild neighbors.

Try a visit to the Silver Run elk viewing area located on Ski Run road just before the West Fork turnoff. The site includes interpretive plaques and a handicap-accessible telescope for viewing the winter range of the Silver Run elk herd.

hiking Just south of town sits Custer National Forest and the Absaroka-

Beartooth Wilderness. More than 700 miles of hiking trails provide access to it, making this – the fifth largest wilderness area in the country. Come springtime and snowmelt, the alpine meadows blossom with wildflowers just as high country trails open to foot traffic, offering hikers magnificent mountain scenery as well as

trout-filled lakes, stunning waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

mountaineering & Backpacking The Absaroka- Beartooth Wilderness is home to hundreds of miles of trails and a wide variety of terrain for rock and ice climbing. It’s also where you’ll find Montana’s tallest

peaks, including Granite Peak, the state’s highest point at 12,799 feet. Local guides can help you learn the

fundamentals of alpine mountaineering and provide guiding services to summits throughout the Beartooths.

Biking Red Lodge offers access to diverse cycling terrain for both fat and skinny tires. For a mellow mountain bike ride chock full of scenery (and a few good hills), follow the

unpaved Meeteetse Trail just south of town. If you prefer the pavement, follow Highway 212 south of town to the foot of the Beartooth Scenic Byway. We dare you to climb to the top!

golfing Just west of town, Red Lodge Mountain’s 18-hole golf course provides 100-mile views and challenging terrain. Expected the unexpected on this course, with lots of creeks, lakes, hills, and the occasional moose or deer wandering across the fairway. Open from late May – early October. In the old days, they used to say Red Lodge had a saloon on

every corner. Well, some of those saloons have been replaced

by art galleries (such as the Clay Center), gift shops (like CC

Legends) and a park (Pride Park), but much of the historic

character is still on display. Pick up a walking tour brochure at

the Museum, or one of the fabulous Red Lodge history books

for more of the inside story on The Way We Were.

tiPPet rise art centerArt Center opens for third seAsonThose of us lucky enough to live here know that a day in the Beartooth Mountains is as close to perfection as one can get. Who would have guessed a pair of visionary philanthropists could improve on that transcendence by adding music, art, and architecture to the landscape?

Tippet Rise Art Center, located outside of Fishtail, midway between Billings and the edge of Yellowstone Park, is the ideal site to blend art, classical music, and spectacular landscapes. Its founders, Cathy and Peter Halstead, spent years searching for the perfect physical embodiment of their vision of making art happen in a beautiful place. Finally, outside of Fishtail, the couple found the ideal location: a place where large-scale sculptures can be placed in gentle canyons and classical music mingles with the Western Meadowlark’s

lovely song to the wide-open spaces and high prairies of the West. Peter Halstead said there must be spots equally beautiful somewhere, but nothing compares to the rolling foothills and soaring mountains in southcentral Montana.

Tippet Rise Art Center is now in its third season of bringing concerts by world-renowned musicians and specially commissioned sculptural structures to a 10,260-acre working ranch, which includes part of the former 3,000-acre Johnson Ranch in Stillwater County, home to the late Montana artist Isabelle Johnson. The center is open June 29 through September 16th, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 10am - 3pm.

This season, Tippet Rise offers eight weeks of live classical music performed indoors and out by some of today’s most celebrated

musicians. Season Three features an international roster of renowned artists—some beloved alums, others making their debuts at Tippet Rise. The season’s programs include extraordinary masterworks by Johann Sebastian Bach, immersions in the Romantic repertoire, and compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries, including the world premiere of a new piece by Aaron Jay Kernis, commissioned by Tippet Rise and performed by the Borromeo String Quartet.

For details on the 2018 concert season, which begins July 6 and concludes September 9, visit the Events page at www.tippetrise.org.

Tippet Rise also offers a Spring Film Series featuring screenings from the U.K.’s Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

In addition to its classical music program and film series, Tippet Rise Art Center is home to large-scale sculptures and other works by some of the world’s foremost artists and architects. Eight mammoth works of art are placed atop knolls and nestled into valleys throughout the ranch. Many are site-specific commissions that weave together the boundaries of art, nature, and architecture.

The sculptures can be toured by the art center’s vans, by bicycle and on

foot. Two van tour options are available in 2018: the full tour, which visits all of the art center’s sculptures and lasts approximately 2.5 hours, and the half tour, which visits a preselected number of sculptures and lasts approximately 75 minutes. Van tours are $10 each for adults and free for anyone 21 and

under and are available first-come, first-served (space is limited).

For hikers and bicyclists, nine miles of trails and 13 miles of gravel road connect the sculptures at Tippet Rise. Distances between each sculpture vary from a half mile to three miles on hilly terrain with very steep grades. Cyclists must bring their own bicycles. Hiking and biking at the art center are free for everyone. Advance registration via the website

is required for all visitors, including those touring by bike and on foot.

A day of music and/or sculpture tours in the mountains works up an appetite. For concert ticket holders and sculpture tour guests, delicious lunch and dinner options are available for purchase from Cordon Bleu-trained Chef Nick Goldman and Chef Wendi Reed of Wild Flower Kitchen.

In one day, you can experience the art center’s breathtaking vistas, an extraordinary diversity of native grasses, wildflowers and wildlife, bucolic herds of sheep and cattle, eight larger-than-life works of art, sumptuous cuisine, and a fascinating array of visitors, artists and locals…. all in the rolling foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. One perfect day.

To register for tours and for more information, visit www.tippetrise.org.

fishtail - nye neighborhoodTake a drive west out of town, and Highway 78 will escort you deep into some of the most beautiful country you’ll ever set eyes on. Wide, sweeping turns of two-lane blacktop open up vistas of meadows so lush they were once among the country’s largest producers of wool. To this day, most of this land is used for beef production, on small family ranches run by descendants of the valleys’ first homesteaders in the 1910s and ‘20s.

But it wasn’t agriculture that first brought white men to this high country. After gold was discovered in the granite mountains around Cooke City, prospectors fanned out over this whole territory. Instead of gold, what they found in the Stillwater River valley was Chromite – a metal whose fortunes are tied to war, as it is critical in hardening steel for munitions.

The area’s first mining company started up in 1884, and within two years the town of Nye boomed to nearly 400 hardy souls supported by a smelter, store, commissary, and six saloons (the more civilizing influences

of a church and school would come later). During the mining years, the real backbone of this area took hold. Montana was in its homesteading boom, and between 1909 and 1923, more than 1,300 claims were staked in Stillwater county.

July’s annual Nye Goes Nuts celebration originated in 1939, when 1,400 neighbors and friends gathered on a local ranch for a party that included wrestling, clowns, snake charmers, a picnic and fundraiser. The event is still a great way to take a peek into how a vibrant ranching community lets loose and shakes off the long winter.

Once you’re in the neighborhood, you can’t help but stop off in Fishtail. With a population of 78 and a main street one block long, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. But this little town is long on charm, so whether you manage to catch their Fishtail Family Fun Day in June, or find yourself wandering the aisles of the General Store that dates back to 1900, you’re gonna love Fishtail. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. And, speaking of warnings, here’s one to chew on: These people know beef. For steaks (and more) that go beyond your expectations, stop in at any of the restaurants in the valley. No really, do. And come hungry.

cooKe city & silver gateNo summertime visit to the Yellowstone area is complete without a drive over the Beartooth Highway and a stop in the bustling, historic towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate. Though we often think of them as a single destination, they actually got their start in very different ways. The towns boast that they have a year-round population of about 100 people and 300 people in the summer. Today, both towns still offer a hearty dose of rugged frontier character, complete with warm hospitality and service that ensures no visit is ever your last.

Whether your stop includes burgers or steaks, coffee or another kind of brew, you can’t go wrong up here. (It must be something about the altitude—everything just tastes better when you’re almost a mile and a half high.)

On your next ski trip, plan a few extra days and head up (via Gardiner, MT) to cross country ski, backcountry ski

or snowboard. We promise, you won’t forget it. Or if sleds are your thing, rent snowmobiles right in Cooke and hit the 60 miles of groomed trails, like unforgettable Daisy Pass at 10,000’ where you’re greeted with unparalleled views into Yellowstone and across the Beartooths. Snowmobiling around Cooke City runs from November through May and even June, some years, so make your plans now.

And if you are visiting in the summer, there’s no end of adventure waiting for you. Bordered by National Forests

—Shoshone, Custer/Gallatin—and literally more lakes, rivers and scenic vistas than you can shake a stick at, all you need is your sense of adventure and a sturdy pair of boots, and solitude is yours within minutes of leaving the pavement. Whether you’re up for fishing, hiking, biking, boating, horseback riding, camping or

just lazing, ask around in town for the destination that’ll best suit your time and interest, pick up maps and supplies and head out into the wild. Because as spectacular as the Top of the World is from a car, it’ll take your breath away when all you can hear is the rush of water in the creek and the breeze through the pines.

cooKe city The mountains surrounding Cooke City have been on the map since 1870, when prospectors first stepped foot in the valley. They came looking for wealth and built a town on dreams; that of the next big strike and the promise of a railroad. The townsite of Cooke City was officially established in 1883, the name chosen in honor of Jay Cooke Jr., son of the Civil War and railroad investor. While the railroad never came, and the town

had its ups and downs, it found its calling in the tourism industry. This has become the main source of income for the residents

here. Remnants of mining still lie in the mountain slopes and the iconic General Store can be seen in every downtown photo since 1886. The streets are full of history and the new Cooke City Montana Museum brings that rich legacy to life through its

artifacts, photos, interpretive screens, and summer programming.

silver gate This quaint mountain village is one mile from the Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. An old homestead from 1897 and founded in 1932, was built to serve the tourist trade that was being developed with the Park becoming very popular. When you visit you will notice that the buildings are all of rustic log construction. Silver Gate is a great place to relax, enjoy the mountain views, fish and hike.

So when you’re booking your trip, plan a few extra days for Cooke City and Silver Gate. Because year-round, they keep the Welcome Mat out for those of us in need of some high-country adventure.

Today Colter Pass, Cooke City and Silver Gate offer an array of tourist services. Stop by the visitor center in Cooke City for more information. Check out our New Cooke City Montana Museum, www.cookecitymontanamusuem.org
