SpAceHow do you turn your home office from a place of dread and boredom into an inspirational nook where you can’t wait to spend your time?

For some it’s a place to study, write letters, pay bills, or surf the net. For others it’s a place to create, design or craft. Whether it’s a dedicated room or just a nook or corner, your home office should be a place that inspires creativity. Despite its practical use, it is still part of your home, so treat it that way and approach decorating the space the same way you would decorate any room.

The basics: You’ll need a work top, a comfy chair, good lighting and plenty of storage. Choose these pieces to suit the style of your home, but think outside the square. A desk too corporate looking could be transformed with a coat of bright paint, or consider using a vintage table or even an old door on a pair of trestle legs. A supportive chair is essential, but a dining style or even an old wooden number works just as well and add an upholstered seat for extra comfort.

Lighten up: Lighting is important. Position your workstation near a window if possible to benefit from natural light, then add task-flexible lighting. One light source is not enough, so invest in a mix of clip-on lights, adjustable desk lamps, and even a freestanding floor lamp.

Store it: Storage is essential. Look for chests of drawers, freestanding or wall-mounted wall shelves, as well as baskets and cabinets, which may need customising to fit with your decor. Rather than the usual plastic desk tidy, store your pens and equipment in vintage jugs, old tins and jars.

Decorate: Go crazy with your surrounding walls, use postcards, paper and fabric samples, photos, magazine tear sheets, special treasures and mementos to create eye-catching wall displays that inspire.

Tidy up: Remember to keep your space tidy. Mess is the enemy of productivity. If you can’t lay your hands on what you need when you need it you will become annoyed. And if the space is part of another room, keeping it tidy and nicely styled will be aesthetically pleasing.

Inspire yourself: Treat your office with the same consideration as anywhere else in your home. Make your workspace a reflection of your personality. Life’s too short for boring stationery! Try incorporating artwork, photographs, quotes and personal mementos into your space to make the working area as appealing as possible and don’t underestimate the motivational power of colour. If your workspace is fashioned in inspiring colour, it’s likely to have a very different output to one that is not as pleasing on the eye.

Divide and conquer: If your office is a small space in a larger room it’s important you clearly distinguish it as having a separate function to the wider space you’re using. This might be simply achieved by framing the space with gorgeous, organised storage boxes and a vision board so it visually has a distinctively different feel to the wider space.

File it: It’s so important to file intelligently because paper flow mayhem can quickly throw your workspace into chaos. Every home office should have a dedicated entry point, action station and exit point for paper. When paper comes into your workspace, remove anything unnecessary right away, action things that need to be actioned, and sort other things into logical categories so you know where to find them. Using something like a Stepfile, gorgeous manila folders and beautiful storage and folders is such a simple way to help with this.

Keep it clean: Take five minutes at the end of each day to file documents and tidy your workspace. Not only will you feel more organised, but you’ll start each day in a refreshed working environment that will inspire you and make you more time efficient. Even if it takes a while to get your workspace functioning perfectly and looking beautiful, you will never look back once it’s done.

A kitchen renovation can add substantial value to a home’s value and is absolutely a make or break area when it comes to selling or buying a property.

Granite is obviously a solid slab of stone. There are countless varieties of granite and they all differ depending on where it comes from, the chemical makeup, colours, density, porosity and the amount of pitting, etc. Granites are graded according to factors such as quality, colour and pattern, and how unique or rare the material is.

Caesarstone® is a manufactured product using up to 93% natural quartz combined with pigments and resin (which bonds the stone together) in a factory-controlled environment. The end product is stronger has much more consistency throughout the entire slab.

CoLour

Granite is available in countless colours and variations. Since it is a natural stone, no two are alike. Some granites are simply stunning, with a really unique grain or pattern. Each slab of granite, even if it is the same kind/name, can look completely different than the next slab.

Caesarstone® offers 20 colour variations in New Zealand. The quartz is completely natural, but because the product is manufactured in a factory controlled environment, the colour and pattern are much more consistent. Caesarstone® also has clean crisp white colour s that are not readily available in natural stone.

stAining

Granite. Most people don’t realise, but granite is porous and susceptible to staining. Products like wine, lemon juice, coffee and tea can all cause staining, so any spills need to be cleaned up straight away. Lighter variations are more vulnerable to staining than darker colours because they are more porous. Granite needs to be resealed once a year minimum to help reduce the likelihood of it getting stained and prevent it from getting a dull appearance. You also have to watch what cleaner you use on granite because some

can counteract the sealer and damage the stone.

Caesarstone® is far less porous than granite and is therefore stain resistant. There is no need to ever seal Caesarstone® and there is no annual maintenance. Regular household cleaners can be used for everyday cleaning, and Caesarstone® also provide a complimentary cream cleanser with each new benchtop to keep it in top condition for years to come.

durAbiLitY

Both Caesarstone® and granite are very tough and scratch resistant, and yet Caesarstone® is much more crack resistant than granite.

wArrAntY

Granite warranties are really going to depend on the supplier of the stone and the fabricator of the stone. In most cases there is no warranty on the actual piece of granite itself because it is a natural stone and there is no guarantee it will be free of defects. Most fabricators will offer a warranty on the fabrication and installation only.

Caesarstone® offers a 10-year warranty on every benchtop installed through its national network of approved fabricators and installers. With any warranty, it’s also important to consider who is offering the warranty. Caesarstone® is distributed in New Zealand by The Laminex Group, a part of Fletcher Building.

PriCe

The range of granites can vary widely. As mentioned before, there are many variations affecting the quality of granite. Lower grade granites are obviously the cheapest, and often have pits in the surface and can be more porous and susceptible to stains.

Caesarstone® is typically more expensive than the cheapest granites, but from there, the price difference solely depends on the colour/variation you pick. Regardless of colour and pricing, all Caesarstone® slabs are of the same quality with the same 10-year warranty.

buIld toolSWhen you’re planning a house build or home renovation it can be tricky knowing exactly where to start.

You might have thought has far as “must have three bedrooms” or “more bench space in the new kitchen”, but knowing what’s going to work where is a much slower, sometimes overwhelming process of gathering and eliminating information.

But help is at hand, with a couple of innovative new tools available for those building or renovating. James Hardie has recently launched The Drawing Board, a comprehensive website offering inspiration and expert advice on everything from building materials to decor colours, and design ideas. James Hardie marketing manager Merv Giam says the site offers users the chance to “get inspirations and connect with world-class Kiwi designers and learn about what are the best options for your home”. You can follow progress on real-life renovations, browse some stunning interior designs for ideas, as well as search for builders or architects and compare houses.

Meanwhile the team at Life at Home has taken a similar approach – only in three dimensions. It too has a website, this time showcasing eight different homes and different products used in their design and build. But it has gone much further than that. Because if you take a drive to Karaka Harbourside Estate, about a 30-minute drive south of Auckland CBD, you can examine all eight houses for real.

Taking the traditional idea of the show home to new heights, all eight of the Life at Home houses

are built by a different master builder and each is fitted out with products and services by different suppliers and manufacturers. Take a walk through each house to compare colours, cladding, surfaces, appliances and even artworks. Each item is barcoded so if you like what you see, the showhome host can scan it and provide you with more information, including how to get in touch with the supplier.

Life at Home’s Kim Ellett recommends visitors allow two to three hours to wander through the street taking note of what they like. But the experience is replicated online so if you want to be reminded of something later you can find it there and save it to a personal scrapbook for later reference.

“The idea is to have some critical mass in a single location and create a destination for ideas and inspiration for your next home build or renovation,” he says. “It is about inspiration, demonstrating colour combinations, product innovations and how they work within the actual environment of the home.”

WAll to WAll colouRThe interior colour scheme of your home is great way to express your personality, but paint is subject to the same colour changes in fashion as your wardrobe.

The key is to find colours that make you happy, while still keeping your interior relevant and modern.

* Soft greys: The grey trend is continuing into winter 2013, but it’s evolving with warm, almost mauve, undertones taking the lead. Shades that shine this season include the classic grey of Dulux Godley Head, the soft downy grey of Dulux Torere Quarter, or the muted mauve of Dulux Ohau. Sharpen soft greys with metallic pops; pair with blacks and whites for a monochromatic style; or create layers of textured greys and whites for a soft space.

* Warm neutrals: Neutrals are skewed warmer for winter. Think about a base in a milky grey tone of Dulux Glinks Gully Quarter, soft suede like Dulux Waiau Bay, or the cottony colour of Dulux Haast Half. Natural hues act as a base to embrace eclectic collections of objects, colours and clutter. Think vintage floral fabrics, twirling decorative decals on walls, patchworks and embroidery. Think about what works together – creating a mood board of inspirations and colours is a great place to start.

* Moody near-blacks: It’s not all soft and cottony; dramatically dark spaces will also be big. Near-blacks form the basis of this trend, but keep undertones warm to create cosiness and reflect light – try slightly purple hues such as Dulux Routeburn or Dulux Hunterville.

tHe HeAt IS oNAs the nights close in and temperatures drop, thoughts automatically turn to heating. But how best to do it so you’re conserving energy and keeping power bills to a minimum?

First things first. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) says there are a few steps to take before you make a choice on how to heat.

1. Get your home insulation sorted or the best heating system in the world cannot possibly be effective or efficient.

2. Think about the space you need to heat. How big is the space? How often is it used? What is it used for? What climate do you live in (not just temperature but factors such as salty winds or sulphur in the environment). All of these things help determine what methods will be the most effective for heating your home.

Heat pump: Provides fast, convenient, easily controlled heat. Energy Star rated models give three or more times the heat value of every dollar you spend on electricity compared to electric resistive heaters. Gas heating: Flued gas heating is fast, convenient and easily controlled. If you’re already paying gas fixed charges for your house, it can be economical. Electric heating: Good for heating a specific space and the different types of heaters (radiant, fan, convection and night store) mean you can choose one to best suit specific purposes. It’s good to bear in mind that all electric heaters are equally efficient – that is, they convert all the electricity they consume into heat.

Welcome to the world of “upcycling”. It’s all about taking used items – anything from well-worn classic design furnture, to beachcombed rubbish – and adding a little imaginative zhush, to create something new and useable. And usually pretty cool.

Websites such as www.felt.co.nz are treasure troves for those who want to give something old a new home and find something with a touch of quirky cool for their house.

For US-native Elizabeth Cottrell, the inspiration for her gorgeous upcycled furniture came from the brightly coloured New Zealand wool blankets she found in second-hand shops. She’d already seen them made into cushions – and since then she’s found them made into everything from coats to baby overalls and hot-water bottle covers – but decided to make use of an upholstery class she’d recently taken.

Revival Furniture, run from Elizabeth’s family farm near Taihape, was born. She says the blankets evoke strong responses in Kiwis who see her work – everyone has a memory of parents or grandparents who owned at least one.

Aucklander Lisa Ineson started re-vamping furniture because she loved sewing but was “absolutely rubbish” at making clothes. She was given a set of 70s encyclopaedias, which prompted her to try her hand at upholstery and lampshades, “and the rest is history.” The items she makes under her grey st studio label are scoured from local secondhand shops, TradeMe and collectables fairs, as well as cast-offs from friends. They’re then married with interesting textiles.

The designer behind the wonder Co, Jen van Blerk, says her passion for upcycling was sparked by an old dresser bought on TradeMe, which didn’t close properly. Then she stumbled across a series of online tutorials on furniture restoration and off she went. “I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. As soon as I’d done the first I bought an electric sander and searched the house for my next victim.”

Her hot spot for finding hidden treasures is Super Trash in Newton, Auckland. “it’s open really erratic hours but if you catch it there’s usually a dusty old treat begging for a coat if paint.” Her inspiration comes from all over the place. “Often it’s just the piece of furniture itself. I usually buy a piece without a clue what I’ll do with it.”

The phrase “modular home” conjures images of carbon copy, Lego-style buildings. But one look at the homes designed by the team at Box Living and it’s easy to see how wrong you can be.

If you’re considering building your own home but aren’t quite sure if you can afford it – a prefab, or off-site build may just be the option for you.

Alfresco dining is one of life’s joys – and with a little planning need not be limited to warm summer nights. By Rebecca Strang

There are plenty of tasty, colourful things to sow to keep your garden going through winter.

•Lettuce: Sow hearting lettuces now for greens in winter. They won’t tolerate waterlogged soils, so consider pots. ‘Winguard’ (from Egmont Seeds), an iceberg-style with good frost tolerance, and dark green ‘Winter Triumph’ (from Yates) are both good performers in cold conditions.

• Broad beans: Even in chilly conditions, they should pop up in as little as 14 days.

•spring onions: Recipes generally call for a bunch of spring onions, not a single specimen, so sow seeds in fat clumps. For a colourful change, sow brightly coloured ‘Red Bunching’ (from McGregor’s) or ‘Purplette’ (Kings Seeds). Snip the tops of ‘Purplette’ as spring onions or let it mature into cute purple mini onions.

• garlic: Garlic is traditionally sown on the shortest day but actually you can get it in the ground anytime between late autumn and very early spring. Your summer garlic yield will be only as good as the seed you use, so resist planting cheap supermarket cloves. Garlic likes a sunny spot in free-draining, fertile soil – dig in sheep pellets and compost first. Bury unpeeled cloves, pointy end up, about 5cm deep. Only plant the fattest outer cloves from each seed bulb.

•Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower: These brassicas need space, so plant seedlings at least 50cm apart. If they’re forced to crane their necks to reach the weak winter light, you’ll end up with spindly florets or small heads.

If you’re wanting to keep down costs of your outdoor heating Ric Chalmers of Pivot Stove and Heating says a chiminea is one of the cheapest outdoor heating options. When alight they radiate character and warmth – the only trick is that they do get hot on the outside so take care if there are small children around.

And instead of the traditional barbecue consider a pizza oven for warmth and sustenance all in one. Some models can be used for more than just pizza – experiment with roasting, baking, braising, casseroling or char-grilling, even breadmaking or kebabs. The wood imbues your food with an amazing flavour and once you’re done, fling the door open to keep everybody warm.

Meanwhile, Rinnai manager of research and development Greg Brinsden has a few tips for making the most of an outdoor fire:

•They should spruce up as well as warm up your outdoor area. Pick one one that complements your home.

•Look for a fire that is flexible in terms of installation. Some fires can be placed anywhere in your backyard whereas others need a specific spot.

•If DIY is your forte, go for a fire that has installation instructions and do it yourself – it’s cheaper.

•Choose a fire with good wind protection, so you can have the doors to your fire open or closed, regulating the heat as you need.
