This book examines methods of generating and identifying ideas, and teaches students to understand what is being observed and recorded. It explores how different experiences, contexts and references are important in identifying an idea that is appropriate for a particular individual, target audience or culture. Advocating a step-by-step approach to generating ideas and brainstorming, it encourages an open mind in the development of ideas and teaches students to question convention.

This book introduces the idea of a category of designed graphic objects that significantly contribute to the functioning of urban systems, for example clock towers, signs, and screens, street numbers, architectural communication, outdoor publicity, and even markings on a pitch.

Robert Harland links the defining properties and configurational patterns that make up small graphic detail to larger symbolic statements by looking at the environment and design, and deconstructing form and context relationships.

This cross section through type, typographic, graphic and urban design will provide a framework for considering the design transition between alphabets, writing systems, images (in the broadest sense) and environments.

Design, Ecology, Politics critiques the ways that the design industry – and even many sustainability discourses within the design industry – perpetuates unsustainable development regimes. When design does engage with issues of sustainability, this engagement typically remains shallow. The situation is made more severe by design cultures that claim to have no politics. Meanwhile, new ecologically informed design methods and tools (such as biomimicry, circular design and lifecycle analysis) hold promise only when incorporated into a larger project of political change.

Joanna Boehnert uses case studies of successful and unsuccessful environmental design projects to describe the ways that design functions within the economic system and how design could work beyond capitalism. Her illuminating study integrates ecological and critical positions into design theory to put forward a foundation for ecologically-informed design.

Joanna Boehnert is a Visiting Fellow at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science at the University of Colorado, USA.

The first comprehensive publication to focus on Asian design and its histories. Although definitions of design in Asia are multiple, fluid, and historically contingent, the disparate cultures within this vast landmass have long produced arts and crafts, interior, graphic, and design objects for domestic, regional, and global consumption. The Encyclopedia provides in-depth, critically informed coverage of these practices, products, and the interpretive issues pertaining to them.

The Encyclopedia is divided into four volumes – covering East Asia, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia, and Global & Regional Themes and Issues. Volumes I-III are organized by country to reflect specific regional and national histories and geographies. Within these geographies, traditions, histories, theories and practices as well as key issues in modern and contemporary design are considered.

Critical design is becoming an increasingly influential discipline, affecting policy and practice in a range of fields. Matt Malpass’s book is the first textbook to introduce critical design as a field, providing a history of the discipline, outlining its key influences, theories and approaches, and explaining how critical design can work in practice.

Using a wide range of examples from contemporary practice, and drawing on interviews with key practitioners, Matt Malpass provides an introduction to critical design practice and a manifesto for how a radical and unorthodox practice might provide design answers in an age of austerity and ecological crisis.

Matt Malpass is a Senior Lecturer on MA Industrial Design and a Research Fellow in Critical Design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, University of the Arts London, UK.

A John Heskett Reader brings together key writings of the pioneering design historian whose work was foundational for the study of industrial design, and the relationship between design, design policy and economic value. The reader represents the great breadth of Heskett’s contribution to the field and explores several of his key working concerns. The anthology includes previously unpublished and out-of-print material alongside extracts from classic works. Extracts are grouped into thematic sections with editorial introductions written by leading design historians.

This study considers how objects – lampposts, post boxes, parking meters, litterbins and signage are designed to populate public spaces. Herring explores the context of a post-war national government, backed by design experts and bodies such as the Council of Industrial Design, keen to propagate ‘good’ modern design in post-war Britain. She traces how the struggle over the design of street furniture exposed deep-seated anxieties about class, taste and power. Herring draws upon archival material and interviews with leading figures in urban design, including the graphic designer Margaret Calvert and industrial designer Kenneth Grange.

Eleanor Herring lectures in design history at Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, in product design at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and in fashion and sustainability at ESMOD, Berlin, Germany.

This illuminating book offers a detailed account of how national identity and cultural policy have shaped design, while suggesting that such simple formations of the ‘national’ are increasingly unsustainable in an age of globalisation, migration and cultural diversity.

The author addresses the key concepts of essentialism, constructivism, geography and multiculturality, and throughout relates the theoretical discussion to a wide range of examples of products, movements and exhibitions from countries including the UK, the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium.

Javier Gimeno-Martínez is assistant professor at the VU University Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

A richly illustrated study of the development of mid-century modernist design in Denmark from historical, analytical and theoretical perspectives. Mark Mussari explores the relationship between Danish design aesthetics and the theoretical and cultural impact of Modernism, particularly between 1930 and 1960. He considers how Danish designers responded to early Modernist currents: the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, their rejection of Bauhaus aesthetic demands, their early love of wood and materials, and the tension between cabinet-maker craft and industrial production. Mussari discusses the writings and works of such figures as Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, and Finn Juhl.

“Knott (who is undoubtedly an important up-and-coming voice in the world of craft criticism) … proves, in this politely disruptive book, that the amateur and professional don’t exist in separate silos ... a timely reminder of craft’s breadth and everyday importance.” Grant Gibson, Crafts Magazine

Knott’s illustrated study explores the curious and unexpected attributes of things made outside standardised models of mass production, presenting a historical and theoretical framework for understanding amateur craft in the modern era, from 19th century Sunday painters and amateur carpenters to present day railway modellers and IKEA hackers.

Maris Gillette explores how state involvement has affected Jingdezhen’s porcelain production, particularly during the 20th century. She considers how the Chinese government has consumed, invested in and managed the industry, and the effects of state intervention on ceramists’ lives, their environment and their works. Gillette traces the transition from imperial rule to communist state ownership, the changing fortunes of the ceramics industry in the 21st century, the decay and decline that accompanied privatisation, and a revival brought about by the manufacturing of highly-prized ‘art porcelain’.

Maris Boyd Gillette is E. Desmond Lee Professor of Museum Studies and Community History, University of Missouri, St Louis, USA.

Castor ware–Celadon Celestine–Ceramic change54 | C C | 55

The discolouration is due to an area of different composition and is where the slip first hit the mould. At this point, if the mould is very porous, a thin slip breaks up into clay and non-clay particles. The pressure of the slip hitting the mould should be reduced by introducing the slip through a pipe. The fluidity of the slip should be decreased by decreasing the amount of deflocculant used, especially the sodium silicate.

Castor wareRomano-British pottery made at Castor. Northamptonshire. The colour varies from a yellowish grey to a slate blue and is the finest of the Romano-British wares. It was not glazed; decoration was added in the form of freely and elaborately trailed white slip depicting figures, animals and scenes.

CatalystA substance which assists a chemical or a physical change to take place in another substance. It may speed up the rate of change or enable the change to take place more easily but after the change the catalyst itself is unchanged. The oxides of aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium all act as catalysts assisting the conversion of the quartz phase of silica into the cristobalite phase.

Catenary curveA curve made by a chain hanging from two fixed points. If this line is used in an inverted form it gives an arch which is extremely strong when used in building. A catenary arch used over a kiln chamber directs all the thrust of its weight within the base. There is therefore no need for buttresses or angle iron bracing across the arch.

The photographs show a kiln packing inside a catenary arch by Jesse Jones and a kiln built at the International Ceramics Festival by Joe Finch.

CeladonA grey-green to grey-blue stoneware and porcelain glaze. The glaze is a feldspathic type. The colour is derived from a very small amount of red iron oxide which in the reducing firing has been changed to black iron oxide. Celadon ware originated in China, developing from dark, grey-green thickly glazed Yue ware to its artistic maturity in the Song Dynasty. The name was derived from Céladon, a shepherd in the 17th-century French play L’Astrée who wore grey-green ribbons and cloak. The classic celadon glaze is thickly applied and semi-translucent. This quality shows best where the glaze gains varying depths in deep and shallow carving thus exploiting the range of tone and colour. The close observation of the shapes, patterns and quiet colours engenders peaceful contemplation.

The glaze is very viscous when molten in the firing and prone to crawling. Sudden drops in temperature, a danger with heavy reduction, must be avoided. A more transparent, pale bluish glaze fired on porcelain, like the Chinese Yingqing, is also included as a celadon. See Iron oxide in glazes and Recipe Appendix.

The olive green glaze on the bottle illustrated is typical of Northern Song Dynasty celadons. The three bowls by Janet Hamer show the effect of light reduction in the yellow/green bowl, to medium and to heavier reduction in the bluish celadon.

CelestineCelestite. Strontium sulfate. SrSO4. The slightly soluble strontium mineral associated with clay shales and salt deposits.

CelsianBarium feldspar. BaO.Al2O3.2SiO2. One of the true feldspars. See Feldspar: types of. It is very rare and available only as hand-picked specimens.

Celsius°C. Centigrade. Degrees Celsius are units on the Centigrade scale where the freezing point and boiling point of water are 0°C and 100°C, respectively. The scale is named after Anders Celsius, the 18th-century Swedish astronomer, who intro-duced the centigrade thermometer in 1742. A century later. Lord Kelvin took the principle of the centigrade scale and extended it to an absolute scale beyond the temperatures associated with water. See Kelvin.

Ceramic changeThe change from clay to pot, upon which the whole pottery industry is founded. Clay can be dried and reconstituted to plastic state ad infinitum but once it has been subjected to 600°C (1112°F) it is no longer clay but a hard material which cannot be disintegrated and dispersed by water. “This is a book that has been needed for a very long time. It examines the intriguing histories of how clay has been used as a medium for dissent, as a commentary on political life and to critique ideas of domesticity ... passionate, lucid, funny, beautifully illustrated and frequently surprising.” Edmund de Waal

Claudia Clare examines the relationship between ceramics, social politics, and political movements and the way both organisations and individual artists have used pots - predominantly domestic objects - to agitate among the masses or simply express their ideas. Ninety colour illustrations of various subversive, satirical and campaigning works illustrate her arguments and enliven debate. Claudia Clare explores work by artists from twenty-one different countries, from 500 BC to the present day.

It is impossible to think of September 11th 2001 and not, at the same time, recall an image. The overwhelmingly visual coverage in the world’s media pictured a spectacle of terror, from images of the collapsing towers to fatigued firefighters.

Drawing on trauma theory, this book asks whether the prolonged exposure of audiences to images in the media was cathartic or damaging. Additionally it explores how individuals used images to process their feelings in photographic memorial websites, interrogating perceptions that these were an aid to recovery and providing a new understanding of how audiences see and process news photography in times of crisis.

The first publication in the Photography, History: History, Photography series, this book examines the role of photography in shaping ideas about race and difference in Australia. Covering the period between the 1840s and the 1948 Declaration of Human Rights, the book includes a rich selection of case studies to show how photographic encounters between Aboriginals, missionaries, scientists, photographers and writers fuelled international debates about morality, law, politics and human rights. Drawing on new archival research, it uncovers a story of photography as a complex social force and is essential reading for students and scholars of photography, race and the histories of empire and human rights.

Through a study of nineteenth-century literature, this book shows how Victorian photography defined the concept of memory for generations to come, including our own. Tracing the representation and significance of photography in literature until the turn of the twentieth century, it analyses a broad range of texts by inventors, cultural critics, photographers, novelists and poets, and explores how photography influenced the organization and narration of private and public experiences of the past. Invaluable for scholars working at the intersection between photography and literature, this pioneering book will also be of interest to students of Victorian studies, visual culture and intellectual history.

African photography has emerged as a focus of research over the last twenty years as a result of a growing interest in postcolonial cultures and a turn towards visual evidence across the humanities and social sciences. This volume explores the many rich photographic collections that have recently come to light and the complex theoretical and practical issues involved in their study. Based on case studies from across the continent dating from the 19th century to the present, chapters consider what constitutes an archive; the value of a critical and reflexive engagement with photographic collections; and the questions of where and what Africa is, as constituted in the archive.

With its focus on the human condition, Italian social documentary photography offers a rich source of cultural history. This book analyses a huge range of unpublished and unknown images from the 1930s to 1960s, including the work of 30 Italian photographers and many more from the UK, USA, France and Germany. Setting Italian photography against a global backdrop of social documentary, this study considers broader social issues such as propaganda, aesthetics and religion. It challenges the long-held association of this genre with Neorealist film and literature, instead placing it in context with painting, magazine publishing, and amateur and anthropological photography.
