Burnabyschools
– A great place to learn –
Public Educationmeans that every childis given the opportuni-ty to learn and to be in-spired to reach theirpotential, and Burna-by’s public schools havebeen doing just that, serving the learningneeds of the communitysince 1906.Our mission, to pre-
pare an inclusive car-ing community of learn-ers for the challenges ofa changing tomorrow isas valid today as it was110 years ago – per-haps even more so. Forwith the impact of glo-balization and technolo-gy, the jobs of today arenot likely to be the jobsof the future. We con-tinue to be innovative, finding ways to engageour students and ensurethey are prepared tocontribute and thrive inthe evolved world theywill encounter.
Education is not a“one size fits all,” andwe offer many optionsto support the uniquelearning needs of eachchild. For elementary
students, this may in-clude a language pro-gram such as French Im-mersion or Mandarinlanguage arts; a Chal-lenge or MACC Programfor highly able learners, and even a school thatfocuses on educationthrough the arts.Secondary students
will appreciate that thedistrict offers one ofthe largest AP programsin Canada, including anoption to earn an AP
Capstone Diploma. Oth-er specialized learningopportunities includesports academies, visu-al and performing artsprograms, a wide rangeof career education op-tions including new pro-grams in Mechatronics(Robotics) and HealthSciences, and a minischool for Highly Ablelearners. We are making a dif-
ference – preparing ourstudents for the chal-lenges of a changing to-morrow. It is evident inthe local, provincial, na-tional and internationalawards won by our stu-dents, staff and schools. We invite you to learn
more about Burnaby’spublic schools at www.sd41.bc.ca – so manyreasons to be proud.

That’s one of thereasons our annualDesign an Ad specialsupplement continuesto be popular inBurnaby. The Burnaby NOW,
local businesses andorganizations, and theBurnaby school district, team up and ask citystudents to designnewspaper ads for thespecial section.Every year, the
students produceinsightful, creative,
thoughtful – andoften humorous –advertisements thathighlight the strengthsof their subjectsand often carrycompelling messages. The businesses andgroups get to choosewhich students’advertisement theywant to run in thesection and ourphotographer visits thestudents. The ads andthe students’ photosare put together by our
team at the BurnabyNOW and anotherDesign an Ad section iscomplete. The ads are also on
display at LougheedTown Centre from March31.I would like to thank all
of the students, teachersand participatingadvertisers who continueto make this annualproject a real success!
