The Fall Fun Run is an activity organized by the Desert Sage PTO to raise funds to support our school. The
money raised will help pay for classroom materials, needed technology, and other identified priorities. This
exciting event encourages our students to be physically active and healthy.
In order for this event to be successful we need your support! Your child will be bringing home a
PLEDGE SHEET
1. The pledge sheet must be returned by Tuesday, October 20th. Please return the sheet even if your
child is not participating.
2. We suggest pledges be obtained from family, friends, and close neighbors. Please do not solicit pledges
from strangers.
3. Sponsors may pledge a “fixed” amount for the student, regardless of the number of laps completed. PTO
has opted to accept pledges this way to avoid the guesswork that comes with per lap pledges and course
distances. Remember, any pledge, no matter how small goes a long way to help out our school.
4. Our 2015 goal is to raise $10,000. This is possible if each student raises just $15.00!
5. Prizes will be awarded to those students who bring in the most pledges!!
We are in need of volunteers to help make our Fall Fun Run a success, If you are able to help please contact
the office and 350-4020. Thank you!
Title I Money
Check out this section of the newsletter every month to find out all of the great ways our school is
using federal funds to support student learning. Last month Title I federal funds were used to purchase instructional materials in reading and/or math for all grade levels.
The National School Lunch Program provides healthy,
low cost or free lunches to more than 31 million kids
every day. It’s the largest child nutrition program in the
nation and ensures that all children have full, happy
tummies all throughout the school year.
To celebrate the National School Lunch Program
(NSLP), President John F. Kennedy established National
School Lunch Week in 1962.
What is in store this year? Prepare for a fun-filled
week of events, activities, and (of course) lots of
delicious healthy food.
When: October 12-16, 2015
Where: School cafeterias
Why: Promote healthy menus and increase student
participation
Theme: School Lunch Snapshot. It’s all about using
social media to support the NSLP, increase community
awareness and encourage participation.
Desert Sage Student Council is
sponsoring a canned food drive to
benefit the Meridian Food Bank.
The Meridian Food Bank is an all
volunteer organization dedicated to
providing emergency food aid to
our neighbors in need. Their ability
to help is determined by the
donations they receive. If you are able to donate,
please send in canned and non-perishable food
during the week of November 2-6. Thank you so
much for your contribution to this wonderful
cause.
Counselor’s Corner Operation School Bell Desert Sage will be going to Operation School Bell in October. Operation School Bell provides students in grades K – 5 with new clothes, a gift card for one pair of shoes, a hygiene kit, and a winter coat. I have 20 open spots left. First come, first served! Student Support Groups I am currently taking teacher and parent referrals for lunch time student support groups on the topics of friendship/social skills and anger management. If you believe your child in grades 1 through 5 would benefit from some instruction in either of these areas, please contact me at the school. Deadline to register your child for either of these groups is October 12th. Responsibility Ask your child what this month’s character education trait is and they should tell you, “Responsibility.” Each month we will profile a new character education trait at Desert Sage and students demonstrating that trait will be nominated for student of the month. Along with the character education trait, students are learning about values that fall under that trait. Taking personal responsibility for one’s choices and actions is a developmental skill that is important for children to master. Parents can help by allowing children to make their own mistakes and guiding them to solving the problem, but not solving the problem for them. When we continually rescue children from problem situations, or protect them from the problem in the first place, we create youth (and adults) dependent on someone else to always “fix” things. We all want our children to grow up and become self-sufficient, successful adults, capable of living on their own and making responsible choices for themselves. To find out more about building that skill in your children, check out the Parenting with Love and Logic classes offered this month at Cecil Andrus Elementary. You can register with the school counselor, Judy Herman, by calling 350-4210. For more information, or to sign up for any of these programs, please contact me, Mrs. Fischer, at 350-4020, or email to [email protected]
