Ithasanareaof200.29km2andatthe2010Censushadapopulationof1,751,696people,withadensityof8,746people/km2.[2]

History

In18May1696,aformerVOCofficerCornelisChasteleinboughtthelandwithanareaof12.44km2,6.2%theareaoftoday'sDepok.Besidescultivatingtheareawithindustrialplantswiththehelpofthelocals,Chasteleinwasactiveasamissionary,preachingChristianitytotheindigenousIndonesians.Tothisend,heestablishedalocalcongregationnamedDeEersteProtestanteOrganisatievanChristenen(DEPOC).AlthoughtheSundanesename

Depok,meaninghermitageorabodeofonelivinginseclusion,wasalreadyinexistencebeforetheestablishmentofthecongregation,someinsisttheacronymmighthavebeentheoriginofthecity'sname.TodaymajorityofDepok'spopulationareadherenttoIslam,exceptforthemajorityoftheoriginalDepokfamily.

BeforehisdeathonJune28,1714,ChasteleinhadwrittenawillthatfreedtheslavefamiliesofDepokandgavethempiecesofhisland,convertingslavesintolandlords.In1714,the12slavefamiliesbecamelandlords(foreverasgiventothemwithentitlementdeedsoftheownerChastelieninhiswill)andfreedmen,women,andchildren.ThefreedslavesarealsoreferredtoastheMardijker'sthewordMerdekameaningfreedominBahasaIndonesia.June28isdesignatedasDepokseDaag(DepokDay)bytheoriginalDepokfamily,andonJune28,2014,300yearsofcommemoration,theyformallyopeneda3meterheightmonumentonitsownland,butitwasprohibitedbytheGovernmentasitreferredtoDutchcolonialization.[3]

The12originalDepokfamilynamesare:BacasIsakhJacobJonathanJosephLaurensLeanderLoenSadokhSamuelSoediraTholense.[4]

TheoriginalslavefamiliesofDepokareofBalinese,Ambonese,Buginese,SundaneseandPortugueseIndo,i.e.,MestizoandMardijkerdescent.Isakh,Jacob,Jonathans,Joseph,andSamuelwerefamilynamesbaptizedbyChasteleinaftertheslavefamiliesconvertedtoProtestantChristianity.Theotherfamiliesretainedtheiroriginalnamesandmighthavebeen(RomanCatholic)ChristianalreadybeforejoiningChastelein'sProtestantchurch.DescendantsoftheoriginalDepokfamilieswiththeexceptionoftheSadokhfamily,stillliveeitherinIndonesiaortheNetherlands.[5][6]

In1871,thecolonialgovernmentgaveDepokaspecialstatusallowingtheareatoformitsowngovernmentandpresident.Therulingnolongerstoodafter1952,wheretheDepokpresidencycededitscontrolofDepoktotheIndonesiangovernmentexceptforafewareas.

DuringtheBersiap(IndonesiancivilwarandwarforindependencefromTheNetherlands)periodof1945muchofDepokwasdestroyedandmanyofitsinhabitantskilledby'Pemuda'.[7]ManyoftheoriginalDepokfamiliesfledfortheirlivesfromIndonesiaduringtheIndonesianrevolutionandnowliveintheNetherlandsaspartoftheIndocommunitythere.[8]

InMarch1982,DepokwasreclassifiedasanadministrativecitywithinBogorRegencyand,in1999,asacityheadedbyamayor.Thenon20April1999,thecityofDepokwasunifiedwithsomeneighbouringdistrictsofBogorRegencytoformanautonomouscityofDepok(independentoftheRegency)withanareaof200.29km2.[9]Thisdateiscommemoratedasadateoftheestablishmentofthecity.
