Bergen Chamber of Commerce arranged its annual conference last Friday, this year under the title “Leaders Who Lift up the Spirit and Inspire”. In this week’s Intro, we are also hoping to be able to lift up your spirits and inspire, and this week we get a good driving force from the above mentioned conference. Namely, we bring you from there a truly joyful and steaming hot piece of news. Professor Bodil Holst attended the conference, where she received the BTO & Sparebanken Vest’s Innovation Award for her innovative project on lithography. Thus the big congrats go to Bodil. We are looking forward to see what will come out of that.

Furthermore, we would like to encourage the employees and students to take a look at Ship Owner Jacob R. Olsen and his wife Johanne Georgine Olsen’s endowment which is presented at page 4 of this issue of IFT-posten. There could be some money in it for the creative souls.

Have a great weekend,

Professor Bodil Holst of IFT wins BTO

And Sparebanken Vest’s idea competition for 2014

Last Friday at 14:00 it was announced that Professor Bodil Holst of IFT is the winner of BTO and Sparebanken Vest’s idea competition for 2014.

Today’s production method within the field of photo-lithography consists of directing a photon beam (laser) through a mask, in order to get the pattern from the mask photocopied onto the surface. Professor Holst from the Department of Physics and Technology at UiB stands behind the idea for a new method of lithography which, among other things, will give smaller and faster micro chips. Smaller micro chips provide us users with faster and more energy efficient technology, which, among other things, leads to longer periods between each time we need to charge our mobile phones. The market for the sale of such semiconductors in USA alone is around 146 billion dollars, and the jury says that if this idea works out, it will become a real game-changer in this market. On Friday, No-vember 14th, she received the award as "Best Research Idea 2014" by BTO and Sparebanken Vest at the Bergen Chamber of Commerce’s Annu-al Conference. You can read the jury’s evaluation at this link (Norwegian only).

At this year’s conference, you will get a chance to meet researchers, activists and practitioners who will contribute from their different standpoints in sheding light on the topic of sexual orientation and gender identity in relation to workplace discrimination. Kim Friele and Norman Anderssen are listed among the other exciting lecturers. The conference will be opened by the rector Dag Rune Olsen and will be closed by a panel discussion moderated by Linda Eide. Read more about the programme here! Time and place: December 5th 2014, from 08:30 - 15:30, Radisson Blu Royal Hotell, Bryggen. Lunch will be served. Ift-posten stands corrected

In last week’s IFT-posten it was claimed that it is not possible to fold a piece of paper more than seven times, re-gardless of how big or thin it happens to be. Several vigilant readers have pointed out that this is not true, adding that this claim puts IFT in a bad light. Already in 2002, the American high school-student Britney Gallivan proved that a piece of paper can be folded 12 times. This also proves that not everything published on the Internet is nec-essarily true, including the above mentioned claim. You can read the whole story at this link on how Britney Crystal Gallivan managed to create this incredible master piece. IFT-posten apologizes, but is also grateful on such observant readers.

Invitation to a seminar

On behalf of SINTEF, we would like to invite you to a seminar:

Elderly wave at the Norwegian continental shelf More than 5000 recovery wells have been drilled in Norway. The Norwegian Oil and Gas Organization estimate that 3000 of those should be permanently plugged over the coming years. With today’s technology and safety requirements, this will take approximately 20 years. Adding the new wells expected to be drilled in this period, this work will take approximately 40 years, and the costs will add up to 900 billion kroner. Norwegian state will need to pay almost 80 percent of this cost. Why is it so expensive? How can we make the work more efficient and at the same time reach the goal of increased recovery from the new reservoirs? And who is responsible for gathering the statistics on how many wells remain to be plugged? Check out the lecture and registration details at in this attachment, or at our web page: http://www.sintef.no/Presserom/SINTEF-seminarene/Eldrebolgen-pa-sokkelen/ Time: December 3rd, from 13:30 – 15:30 Place: Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel, Holbergsgate 30, Oslo Meeting room: Scandinavia Scene This seminar is free of charge. We hope you are able to attend. Best regards Anne Karin Grønland SINTEF Concvern Headquarters, Communication Phone: 93 03 74 59 [email protected] WWW.sintef.no

Announcement of Ship owner Jacob R. Olsen and his

wife Johanne Georgine Olsen’s endowment

(research on education at UiB)

An endowment has been announced for research on the use of new teaching and learning methods at University of Bergen. These funds should contribute to research-based teaching methods and measures which promote learning. Those employees who contribute to pedagogic development by testing out and researching new teaching and learning forms will be prioritized.

Both the employees, PhD research assistants and students can apply. The endowment for 2015 will amount to 500 000 kroner for research of teaching and learning at UiB. Of these funds, 400 000 kroner will be allocated to researchers and PhD research assistants, and 100 000 will be allocated to students.

This endowment should contribute to research-based pedagogic which promotes learning while teaching. Those employees who contribute to pedagogic development via testing out and researching the new teaching and learn-ing forms will be prioritized. Availability and publishing of the development phases and research results is ex-pected. When it comes to student-initiated projects, those measures which contribute to an increased study quali-ty and promote learning will be prioritized. More information is available from this link: http://www.uib.no/ledelsen/82664/olsens-legat Application deadline is December 1st. Applications’ Database: https://fond.app.uib.no/main/
