WORK SHEET

INTRODUCTION: Think a minute what it would be like if we couldn’t drive places because we couldn’t cross creeks and rivers. Do you have to cross a bridge on your way home. Do you even notice? Hopefully you can see the importance of bridges in our society. Bridges are built by our construction systems.

A bridge can be extremely simple or incredibly complex. It can be a plank, an arch, a suspended beam or a delicate lace work of iron and steel. It can be built of wood, stone, bricks, iron and steel, concrete or simple ropes and vines. A bridge can be built in the middle of a city, in the country or in the mountains.

In this activity, your team will design and construct a wood bridge to specs and with materials supplied by your teacher. When all bridges are finished they will be tested to see which will hold the most weight compared to the weight of the bridge, this is called efficiency. This project is worth 200 points.

Page 11: demonstrator … · Web viewRATIONALE: This document will provide information pertaining to lesson material that implements Engineering Design and bride building concepts to students

PROCEDURES: Please read procedures carefully.

1. Watch video, “Building Your Bridge”.

2. Discuss Bridge Building Project Work Sheet. Discuss bridge specifications and student instruction book.

3. Sketch three design ideas for your bridge. These must be checked by your teacher before any further work. You will choose one design idea to construct your bridge. These must be turned in at the completion of the project.

4. After design has been chosen, draw actual size the side view, top view (actually the bottom view) on 11” x 17” graph paper. Drawing will be graded by the teacher using Bridge Drawing Scoring Rubric. NOTE: You are not required to have a top on the bridge.

5. After drawing is graded and approved by the teacher, get your bridge building materials from the teacher and begin constructing your bridge (sides first and bottom next). Let it dry overnight. NOTE: This is all the materials you will get so make sure you use wood carefully.

6. After all your pieces are finished, assemble your bridge. Let dry overnight. NOTE: No bridges will be tested until all bridges have dried overnight.

7. Inspect your bridge for loose parts, etc.

8. The teacher will grade all bridges for correct specifications and other criteria on the Bridge Construction Project Scoring Rubric.

9. The teacher will weigh the bridges at this time and take control of the bridge throughout the testing process.

10. Bridges will be tested for efficiency and the bridge with the highest efficiency rate will get the best grade.

\ 11. GOOD LUCK!!!!

NOTE: The width of the structure must support a 2” x 8” rectangle load platform. There must be a one inch square space in the center of the bridge to accommodate the ½” rod used to hold the bridge for testing.

The structure must reach one inch (1”) beyond the abutments, plus or minus 1/8”; Therefore the structure must be two inches (2”0 greater than the span, plus or minus ¼”.

No part of the bridge may extend below the plane of the abutments.

Structures cannot be tested if: 1) there is two or more rules violation; 2) the bridge cannot be placed on the tester; 3) the testing block and rod cannot be placed in the center of the bridge; pins are left in the bridge.

MOUSETRAP VEHICLE PROJECT WORK SHEET

INTRODUCTION: Have you ever wondered what goes into designing an automobile. There are many steps involved in the design and manufacture of an automobile. A mousetrap car is a vehicle is no different. A mousetrap car is a vehicle that is powered by the energy that can be stored in a wound up mousetrap spring. Building mousetrap vehicles allows you to experience the process of design and engineering first-hand.

In this activity, your team will construct a mousetrap vehicle by following instructions given on a handout. There will be several steps in the construction of the mousetrap vehicle. One vehicle will be constructed by each team. This project is worth 200 points.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Assembly and Operating Instructions Balsa Wood Side Rails Balsa Wood Deck Top Brass Axles Brass Lever Arm Mousetrap DVD Wheels Rubber DVD/CD Spacers Metal Washers Zip Lock Axle Hook Kevlar String Ruler/Measuring Tape Glue 3/16” x ¾” Bolt and Nut (?) Drill Press (?)

PROCEDURES: Please follow procedures carefully.

1. Discuss mousetrap vehicle project work sheet.

2. Show video, “Mousetrap Vehicles”.
