How can something as zanyand far-fetched as the GreatAmerican Duck Race exist for38 seasons in a small townwho’s only claim to fame priorto the webbed-foot rally wasChile and pure water?...And the legends grows...It began shortly after the

1970s with a group of Demingbusinessmen dedicated to aonce-a-week meeting at theirfavorite local watering hole.When you get together and

belt a few, puff on cigars and

prop your feet up on the table,the conversation can easilystray to the unconventionaland quickly delve into thesurreal — like something outof a twisted David Lynch scriptor Tim Burton screenplay.These chaps thought up a

duck race to drum up tourismand get people off theircouches and into a communityevent.After several rounds, an

ashtray full of cigars andplenty of scuff marks ontabletops, the wheels (orwebbed feet – pardon the pun)were put in motion for the

Great American Duck RaceThe brainchild called for a

17-foot track, split into eightrunning lanes for ducks tothrough. Each lane wouldhave a running board for duckhandlers (or jockeys) to chasetheir duck down the lane.Selling it to the community

would be the starting point,and it didn’t take long for thecitizens of Deming to rallytheir support for a crazy ideathat just might kill the small-town boredom.Little did the GADR founding

fathers know it would createworld-wide interest and give

the little town a reason not toroll up the sidewalks so earlyin the day and put that onehorse away in the communitybarn.After the several years of

racing ducks over dry land,some wisenheimer asked:

“Hey! Why don’t we race themin water — side-by-side? ... It’sonly natural.”Now you have the wet and

dry track races on the fourthweekend in August in Deming.If that wasn’t enough,

they included a tortilla toss,outhouse race, horseshoesand washers tournament,duck royalty pageant, softballtournament and hot airballoons.Wait! You gotta have a

parade!Thirty-seven years later, this

town still puts its best webbedfoot forward and rolls out thered-feathered carpet for thefans.Each year the duck races

takes on a theme for theweekend. Duck racing has putDeming, NM on the map, sowhy not borrow a page out ofa 1960’s movie craze and gowith “Beach Party.”Those of you who claim to

leave town for the weekendonce the duck shenanigansbegin, happy trails and we’llhold down the fort!And now it’s “Pure Water,

DEMING - The summerof 1980 I was listening tothe radio while driving towork in Albuquerque whenI heard an interview withSteve Marlowe about a duckracing competition starting inDeming in August.I called the radio station for

more information about theduck race. They referred meto Marlowe.I called his office and his

secretary asked, “Who may Isay is calling?” Marlowe musthave thought it was a prankcall when she told him RobertDuck is on the line.I explained my wife and

I had two pet ducks andthought it would be fun toenter the race.We did enter that first race,

winning third place. Best ofall, we saw exactly what aduck race was. The first yearthe winning duck was thefirst to crash into the fence atthe end of the 16-foot’ race.Honestly, you can only trainyour duck so many timescrashing into a fence beforethey really slow down. Thus,we modified our trainingregimen.The second year my wife

and I entered seven ducks,calling them the “MagnificentSeven.”Indeed, they were. Out of

400-plus entries that year,four of our seven ducks werein the final race of eightducks. We won that year withBFD Express (Bosque Farms

Duck).We won that year and the

next two.We “retired” for two years

before returning to winthe next fourchampionships.Again, we “retired”for three years andreturned to winthe next five years.After winning

the 12th time, Isuggested theychange the rulesto using onlyducks provided bythe duck race.That way, everyone would

have an equal chance ofwinning.The coincidence of having

a person named Duckwinning the duck race wasa considerable bonus. Iappeared on a number ofTV programs, including the

Tonight Showwith JohnnyCarson and Iwas interviewedby radio stationsthroughout theUnited States.My first radio

interview wasat 4:30 a.m.on a Bostonradio station.This was after

arriving at home from Demingat midnight.There were several

Canadian radio interviews,but the one I will never forgetwas a station from Australia.The duck race committee,

obviously, didn’t want to endthe Robert Duck/DemingDuck Race connection, so a

plan was devisedfor me to takeexhibitions of theDeming Duck Raceto other towns tokeep the publicitygoing.In the beginning,

the duck racecommittee paid halfour fee to take theexhibition to other

events. The subsidies lastedone year before I took overgetting the entire fee paid bythe events.The exhibitions evolved

into a duck race “show”,and the offers continued togrow until I sold my jewelrybusiness in Albuquerque in1999 and became a full time

“professional duck racer.”We have now had the show

at 275 events around thecountry, as far away as theBangor State Fair in Maine,the Florida State Fair and theEvergreen State Fair north ofSeattle.This year, in addition to

the Indiana State Fair andthe Arizona State Fair, wewill have the show at theNew Mexico State Fair inAlbuquerque.In every show I give credit

to Deming, New Mexicofor creating this wonderfulsporting event. Every nowand then someone tells me,“You have really put Demingon the map.” My response isalways, “No, Deming put meon the map.”P.S. To see a clip of the

time winner of the GreatAmerican Duck Race. Hewon 12 of the first 18 duckraces and had win streaks of3, 4 and 5. DEMING – The GreatAmerican Duck RoyaltyPageant is not your typicalbeauty pageant, according topageant coordinator AmandaMauldin-Barnes. “It’s moreof a community show thatshowcases some very talentedand creative people,” she said.“People want to come out andsee how creative the costumesand skits are each year.”The pageant is the signature

kick-off event for the 38thannual Great American DuckRace weekend, Aug. 24-27 inDeming. This year’s theme is“Race the Rails,” a tribute tothe history of Deming as a

“Tank Town” when the railroadcame through in the late 1800s.“I expect to see a lot of

trains, whistles and engineersthis year,” Mauldin-Barnesquipped.Yoya’s Bar and Grill is the

chief sponsor for the eventwhich will get underwayat 6:30 p.m. on Thursday,Aug. 24, at the Voiers’ PitPark amphitheater on NorthCountry Club Road. Admissionis $5 for adults and $3 forchildren 12 and under.“Everything you need to do

to sign up for the pageant isonline,” Mauldin-Barnes said.“You can fill out the form andupload your music. It’s free toenter and you could be a duckking or queen and win some

great prizes.”The grand prize for the

GADR King/Queen is $750cash, a one-night stay at a get-away location, GADR t-shirt, alive duck race entry, a crownand flowers and $100 cashfrom 1st New Mexico Bank.The runner-up in the King/

Queen category will take home$500 cash.The four remaining age

divisions will also receive prizepackages.“The duck royalty pageant is

DEMING – This year’s themeis “Race the Rails,” but thatdoesn’t mean all the races atthis year’s Great AmericanDuck Races will be on rail.Once again, if weather permits,balloonists will take to theskies above Deming.The Hot Air Balloon Mass

Ascension will launch at 7a.m. on Saturday and Sunday,August 26-27, from the DemingSoccer League Fields onRaymond Reed Blvd, filling theskies with color.“I feel like a mother

hen,” said Marie Pinchuk,coordinator of the Ascension.Having sold her own balloon,she will not be a pilot buta presence on the ground,

“making sure everyonecomes home.” 16 pilots wereregistered in advance of theevent, hailing from around thestate - Las Cruces, Santa Fe,Artesia - and as far as away asTucson, Arizona.The pilots will compete for

cash prizes in a “Hare andHound” contest, in which

a ‘hare’ balloon lays downa target at which the otherballoons aim with missilesconsisting of chile peppers.The prizes range from $100-

250. “If the weather doesn’tpermit,” she said, such ashigh winds that would forbidtakeoff, “We do have somecrazy pilot games to determine

a winner. The winners fromthis year will have theirballoons depicted on nextyear’s balloon logo on shirtsand pins – and theirs willbecome the hare balloon nextyear.”The Balloon Ascension

predates the Great AmericanDuck Races by one year,making this year the 39thannual hot air balloon rally.“I got involved with the DuckRaces when I moved herefrom New York in 1990,” saidPinchuk. “I became the eventorganizer in 1991.”Whether you take in the

DEMING - Since 2000, the burdenof raising ducklings into championracers for the Great American DuckRaces has fallen to Steve Smith, and heis preparing to pass the responsibilitydowne – er, make that down – to a newgeneration.“One year I got a call from a guy,”

Smith recalled over coffee recently atIrma’s Restaurant, a frequent hangoutwhen he’s not putting the ducksthrough their paces. “He goes, ‘Wheredo you get your ducks?’ And I startedto explain to him that we buy ‘em asbabies from a hatchery in Portales and- after a long pause at the other end,he goes, ‘Oh, you race live ducks? I waslooking for them little yellow ones!’”After veteran duck racer and trainer

Robert Duck (we aren’t kidding – thatwas his name) retired from providingracing ducks for the competition, eventorganizers looked for a local trainer.“My wife at the time and I were raisinganimals, including ducks, so theyapproached us,” said Smith. Soon afterthat, he found himself constructing andmaintaining the dry and wet tracks inwhich the ducks will run and swimtheir relays.Smith takes his responsibility for

this tradition seriously. While he keepsthe secrets of the duck’s trainingregimen close to heart, including thelocation where the ducks prepare forthe competition, the secrets are beingpassed on. “I’ve been trying to retirefor 3 or 4 years,” he said. “I can’t findanyone who wants to do what I do.”This year, once again, Smith is

preparing to set up the Duck Downs,starting the Monday before the racesand working through Friday morning.While he sets up the tracks, tent, andjudges’ stand, his extended family istaking on more responsibility for thestars of the show. “They will come inon Friday from their secret trainingfacility and we’re good to go,” he said.

“My grandkids help get the ducks andhand them out to the racers, so it’s afamily affair.”Smith will be responsible for erecting

two sections of dry track measuring 16x 8 feet for foot races, as well as watertrack lined with vinyl and divided intowire lanes with 12 inches of water sothe ducks’ feet can’t touch bottom andthey must swim.Entry fee for the races are $5 for all

ages, with races scheduled for noonand 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, and noonon Sunday, August 26 and 27. The finalelimination round will launch at 3:00p.m. on Sunday. DEMING – The 38th annual GreatAmerican Duck Race will once againhost the PNM Tournament of DucksParade on August 26th at 10 am, but noneed to be a flapping or quacking duckto see or participate in it.Racing this year is expected to be

more than 70 entries, gathering togetherat Starmax then beginning the routeat 10 am. The route will begin at thearea then will head West on Pine St.Turning South onto Gold Avenueand continue its’ journey to the LunaCounty Courthouse Park, known asthe McKinley Duck Downs during thefestivities.In recent years, the parade has

generated hundreds of entries andorganizers say they have had severalentries so far. As tradition for the GreatAmerican Duck Races, the parade willbe led by local law enforcement andemergency first responders, followedby the JROTC Color Guard and then theWildcat band.This years’ Grand Marshal will be

tradition nearly as old as the DuckRaces itself. The first racing potties ranin 1987 as a way to flush some of thecrowd into downtown. Joe “Butter”Milo was the chief engineer for the firstyears the latrines raced, and headeda champion commode-racing teamhimself for years. After the outhousestook a hiatus in 2013, the torch waspassed to Bryan Reedy, himself aveteran privy-pilot.Reedy briefly recapped the rules for

us: “Your outhouse must have threesides and a toilet seat, there has to beroom for three pushers who maintaincontrol of the outhouse the whole time,and there has to be a driver. That driverhas to have brakes.” The outhouse mustbe propelled by human energy only,without the assistance of motors, andthe driver must be seated on the throne

at all times. Outhouses may have threewheels or four.“The number one priority in

everything we do with the outhouseraces is safety,” Reedy added. “There’sa lot of people that are watching it,and there are no barriers. It goes rightdown Silver. The biggest hazard is oneveering off, and we’ve had some stuffin the past, but for the most part theyare easy to tip over if they run away.”The historic entry fee for the race has

been $50 per outhouse, and there is asmall stock of outhouses on standbyif a team needs a vehicle. DEMING – Fans of the GreatAmerican Duck will get a briefhistory lesson when they don theircommemorative T-shirts for the 38thannual edition of Deming’s claim tofame.“Racing the Rails” is the theme of this

year’s race and the design for this year’shighly-collectible T-shirts.

“The design is based on the historyof Deming,” said Karl Bennett of Karl’sEmbroidery and Screen Printing at420 E. Spruce St. “Deming was builtin parallel to the railroad comingthrough.”The GADR Committee worked

extensively on coming up with thisyear’s logo and theme, keeping inmind that the town was built along therailroad route that joined the east to thewest.In March of 1881, s silver spike was

driven to commemorate the unionof the Santa Fe and Southern Pacificrailroads that completed the secondtranscontinental railroad, linking theeast to the west.

Once the concept of the theme cameto Bennett’s business his crew beganwork on the design and the finishedwork was approved by the Committee.“We have done so many different

themes that it will at some point comefull circle,” Bennett said.A social media survey was circulated

on what duck race fans wanted interms of the color of shirts the logowould be printed on. The final tallycalled for charcoal, blue, pink andpurple.“The shirts should be ready by the

end of next week and we will sell themhere,” Bennett said.

The shirts will sell for $15 in anyof the four colors and sizes will rangefrom youth x-small to adult 3xl.

This year Bennett has added thepopular razorback tank tops for women

in all four colors. They will sell for $15also.“It’s always a challenge, but we will

meet it,” Bennett said. “We plan to printin the neighborhood of 800 shirts. It’s alittle down this year, but the committeewould rather sell out instead of carryover into next year.”A special batch of shirts will be

printed for three different entities of the38th annual duck race. “We went with adenim blue for the sponsors, a charcoalfor the staff and the hot-air balloonswill get a lime green,” said committeemember Christy Garay.The Great American Duck Race

is scheduled for August 24-27. Theevents will open on Thursday, Aug.24, with the Mizkan Duck RoyaltyPageant at 6:30 p.m. at the Voiers’ Parkamphitheater. A king of queen willbe crowned to reign over duck raceweekend.On Friday, Aug. 25, The Mizkan

Sponsor Party will begin at 4 p.m. atthe Deming Elks Lodge, 3401 RaymondReed Blvd.Saturday, Aug. 26 will feature a full

DEMING – The love affair betweenduck racing and softball has seen a bitof a strain in recent years. The issue athand is who can fly furthest – ducksor softballs.Players will be trying to win that

debate when the Great AmericanSoftball Tournament plays out onSaturday and Sunday, Aug. 26-27 atE.J. Hooten Recreational Complex onSouth Nickel St. The USSSA will onceagain sanction the popular men’s andcoed slow-pitch tournaments duringduck race weekend.“This year the tournaments will

benefit the Deming High boys’baseball and girls’ softball programs,”said USSSA Deming Area Director BenVega. “Teams have been asking aboutthis tournament all year long. Weget them from all over Arizona, NewMexico and West Texas.”Vega is hoping to fill a total of 28 to

32 teams total for both brackets.The entry fee per bracket is $250

with a 20-player roster per team.Teams can register by contacting Vegaat 575-494-1831 and must submit aroster online at www.usssa.com.USSSA has helped create a renewed

Nunez is coming off one of theprogram’s better season n recenthistory. The 2016-17 varsity finishedrunner-up in the District 3-5A and

collected 15 wins during the regularseason. They made it to the secondround of the Class 5A State Playoffs.“Most of our girls are coming back

this season,” Nunez said. “Expectationsare running high, as they should.”Coach Nunez said the money raised

from the duck tournament is vital tothe program. “It filters through ourBoosters Club and takes care of ourgirls first, then any other needs wecan handle that our school budgetdoes not cover.”Money from the tournament has

paid for summer program needs inthe past and also helped fund athleteswho otherwise could not afford needswithin the program.Wildcat Baseball at DHS has risen

to competitive levels in recent yearsunder the leadership of Head CoachFernie Holguin. The 2016-17 varsityfinished runner-up n District 3-5A anda regional series win sent them to thestate tournament bracket where thebest eight teams in the state compete.The Cats lost in the first round.“This tournament helps us out a lot

with our fall program,” Coach Holguinsaid. “Don’t get me wrong, we playedsome good baseball during thesummer, but the fall is where we canput the work in as a coaching staff.”

Coach Holguin is looking forwardto the spring season in 2018 where hewill debut a underclass program withgood baseball knowledge. “Our goalis to win a district championship and

compete at the state level, and win astate championship, too.”The tournament format will be an

equalizer for C, D and E classes andthe tournament ball required fromeach team will be a USSSA Classic MBall.The first home run is free, but teams

can buy up to five home runs at $5each or 5 for $20.First and second place teams in

each bracket will receive individualprizes. The third and fourth placeteams will receive team prizes. Therewill be a “Most Valuable Player” awardfor each bracket. The selection ofthose awards will come from the votesof the USSSA umpires working thetournament.USSSA rules will apply.
