Hyderabad, Oct 6 (IANS): With the general strike in Telangana continu-ing in support of a demand for a sepa-rate state, the central government has summoned Andhra Pradesh Gover-nor E.S.L. Narasimhan to New Delhi to get first-hand information about the situation in the region.

The governor will be leaving for the national capital Friday and will call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Saturday, official sources said.Narasimhan is likely to submit a

detailed report to the prime minis-ter and brief him about the situation in the state, especially the impact of the strike by government employees, teachers, transport and coal workers in Telangana.

The governor was Thursday asked to rush to Delhi amid reports that the centre was concerned over the situa-

tion in Telangana, where the 'people's strike' entered 24th day. ¬

The strike has paralysed the ad-ministration, transport, education and coal production in the state-owned Singareni Collieries, badly af-fecting electricity generation at ther-mal stations.

The governor has been summoned at a time when the centre proposes to intensify the consultation process to find a solution to the vexed problem of Telangana.

The centre also appears concerned over apprehensions that the ongoing agitation for a separate state might take a violent turn.

Leaders of Telangana groups, who called on the prime minister in Delhi earlier this week, have ruled out with-drawing the strike without a clear-cut assurance from the centre on carving out a separate state.

Telangana Joint Action Commit-tee (JAC), which is spearheading the Telangana movement, is going ahead with road blockade in the region on Oct 9, 10 and 11.

Mamata greets people on Bijaya Dasami

Don’t speculate over Kashmir custodial death: Congress

Process to select Karnataka’s new Lokayukta begins

Former Bhopal MP commits suicide

Kolkata, Oct 6 (IANS): Greet-ing the people on the occasion of Bijaya Dasami, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday hoped that the occa-sion would inspire the people to work with new energy."I wish everybody a sweet Bijaya Dasami. I hope that all people stay well," Banerjee said here.Idols of mother goddess Durga and her children were immersed in Ganga river and other water bodies across the state on the day, marking an end to five days of puja festivities."Many people are saying that to-day is a sad day. I think that this is not a sad day. This is the day of creations and creators," she said. "Enjoy the occasion and get yourself involved in works with new energy. I hope that the oc-casion will inspire all the people to work for peace and harmony," she added.

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS): The Congress Thursday backed Jam-mu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, saying there was no point speculating over the mysterious custodial death of a ruling National Conference (NC) worker when the matter is to be probed judicially.“There is no point of specula-tion. Omar Abdullah gave a formal statement and clarifica-tion though he is not obliged to...he has asked the chief justice to have judicial inquiry,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here.

Bangalore, Oct 6 (IANS): The Karnataka government Thurs-day started the process to select a new Lokayukta, nearly three weeks after Shivaraj V. Patil quit as ombudsman amid media re-ports that he had violated norms in the acquisition of two plots in Bangalore. Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda sent letters to the leaders of opposition in the state assembly, requesting them to suggest names, official sources said.

Bhopal, Oct 6 (IANS) Sushil Chandra Verma, former MP from Bhopal, attempted suicide by jumping from a building here Thursday, police said. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. A suicide note had also been found by the police in which he had written that he was ending his life due to a pro-longed illness and depression.

BJP wants government to

review China policy

A fit Bal Thackeray attacks PM, Sonia

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party Thursday asked the government to review its policy on China after Army Chief General V.K. Singh's statement Oct 5 that around 4,000 Chinese troops were present in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

"General V.K. Singh's statement that Chinese army is present in Paki-stan-occupied Kashmir is an alarm-ing situation," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said. "The situ-ation has become more serious after the recent strains between the US and Pakistan over the Haqqani terror net-work issue."

He added: "The government should discuss this issue with China."

Mumbai, Oct 6 (IANS): A frail but robust Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray Thursday attacked the Congress and Sonia Gandhi, mimicked leaders like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and took potshots at many other lead-ers, including Anna Hazare, and the judiciary and media.

Addressing the party’s annual Dussehra Rally at Shivaji Park late in the evening, the 85-year old Thack-

eray, imitating the prime minister, said that “what Manmohan Singh speaks nobody understands and ditto with Chief Minister Chavan”, who he mimicked.

Referring to the build-up of Chi-nese troops in Kashmir, Thackeray hit out at Home Minister P. Chidam-baram and Defence Minister A.K. Antony and questioned their abilities to defend the country from within and outside.

Andhra governor summoned to Delhi over Telangana

Release Rajiv Gandhi killers, appeals Karunanidhi

Chennai, Oct 6 (IANS): DMK president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi Thursday appealed to Prime Min-ister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chair-person Sonia Gandhi to take steps to release the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

"I appeal to the prime Minister and the UPA chairperson on behalf of DMK to take steps to release the three convicts lodged in the jail for over 20 years," Karunanidhi said in a statement.

Karunanidhi said Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan have been in jail for more than 20 years and that there are demands from dif-ferent quarters that the centre and the state government release them. He also said there has been a de-mand that the Tamil Nadu cabinet pass a resolution to commute their

death sentence into life imprison-ment. According to him, since the state government is not passing any resolution, the central government should take necessary steps for the prisoners' release. On Aug 11, Pres-ident Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petitions of Murugan, San-than and Perarivalan - all linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ee-lam (LTTE) - relating to their death sentence for their involvement in Gandhi's 1991 assassination.

Rajiv Gandhi, who was prime minister 1984-89, was killed by a suicide bomber called Dhanu at an election rally in Sriperumbudur near Chennai May 21, 1991.

Fourteen other people also lost their lives in the blast. The three condemned prisoners were due to hang Sep 9 but the hanging was stayed by the Madras High Court for eight weeks.

Environment clearance process a farce: Goa PAC

Panaji, Oct 6 (IANS): Environment clearance (EC) certificates issued to mining projects by the union min-istry of environment and forests are nothing short of a farce, the Goa as-sembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has observed.

Scant regard was paid to water bodies, heritage and archaeological sites, schools and tribal areas, while granting of the farcical ECs to min-ing projects, said the report, which pegs Goa's illegal mining scam at ap-proximately Rs.3,500 crore in the last financial year.

"The EC certificates that are is-sued by the MoEF are issued without proper documentation and verifica-tion. In fact it appears that issuance of EC certificates by the MoEF has become an additional farce that is be-

ing carried out to display compliance with the directions of the apex court without any serious examination of the ground," it said.

The report was submitted by the PAC chairman and Leader of Opposi-tion Manohar Parrikar to the speaker Wednesday but has yet to be tabled in the house.

Goa exported nearly 54 million tonnes of iron ore in the last fiscal, out of which nearly seven million tonnes was allegedly extracted illegally.

Tarcar, a mofussil politician who contested assembly elections only once in 2007, along with former Na-tionalist Congress Party (NCP) na-tional secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu, are the only two politicians named in the PAC report on illegal mining.

World says iGrieve as Steve Jobs passes away

Various, Oct 6 (IANS) Steve Jobs, the man who began tinkering with gadgets in his garage and then went on to power the iPod, iPad and iP-hone that became a part of so many lives across the globe, has died leav-ing behind legions of fans. The tech legend was 56. The end came in Palo Alto, California, Wednesday just a day after Tim Cook, the new CEO of world's leading tech company unveiled the iPhone 4S, a faster ver-sion of its best-selling smart phone that includes a virtual “personal assistant” you can talk to. Tributes poured in from all over the world with President Barack Obama put-ting him among “the greatest of American innovators”, while rival Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ac-knowledged his “profound impact”. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, a country where thousands of young techies held him up as an icon of their generation, said he was "saddened" by the death of Jobs and

described him as an “innovative man who had taught the world new ways to communicate and connect”. Jobs is survived by Lisa Brennan-Jobs, his daughter with Chrisann Brennan, wife Laurene Powell, and their three children, Erin, Reed and Eve. The hard-driving Jobs, who resigned in August as CEO amid health concerns, pioneered the con-cept of the personal computer and of navigating them by clicking on-screen images with a mouse to lead a cultural transformation in the digital age.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of count-less innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," Apple said in a statement. "The world is immeasurably better because of Steve." Jobs who had battled cancer for years, had a secret liver trans-plant in 2009 in Tennessee during a six-month medical leave of absence from Apple. Apple fans across the

globe were grief-stricken Thursday on learning about the tech wizard's death.

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata Thursday mourned his death saying “His untimely death is a huge loss to us all. The world has lost a great business leader and a great visionary. The digital age has lost its leading light, but Steve's innovation and creativity will inspire dreamers and thinkers for generations”.

Rupert Murdoch, CEO, News Corp said “Today, we lost one of the most influential thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs of all time. Steve Jobs was simply the greatest CEO of his generation”.

Facebook founder Mark Zuck-erberg wrote, “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you”.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said “the world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come”.

Not many know that Jobs had an India connect. A quest for spiritual-ism took him to the mountains in what is now Uttarakhand in the 1970s with his friend Dan Kottke. Many decades later, as Jobs lost the battle against cancer, thousands of Indians mourned his death.

In a curious coincidence, he died the very day that the Indian gov-ernment unveiled its $50 tablet. The tech revolution he had helped start would now help thousands of un-derprivileged students in India.

Obama warns Pakistan on ties with militant groups

Washington, Oct 6 (IANS) US President Barack Obama Thursday warned Pakistan on its alleged ties with some militant groups, say-ing Washington will not accept a long-term relationship in which Pakistan is "not mindful" of US

interests. "There is no doubt that there's some connections that the Pakistani military and intelligence services have with certain individuals that we find troubling," Obama told report-ers at a news conference at the White House. Obama said Pa-kistan is hedging its bets on the future of Afghanistan by "hav-ing interactions with some of the unsavory characters" who may regain power after the US troops pullout. "But there's no doubt that we are not going to feel comfortable with a long-term strategic relationship with Pakistan if we don't think they're mindful of our interests

as well," he said.Recently, the US has been step-

ping up its efforts demanding Pakistan to cut ties with militant groups, including the Haqqani network blamed for attacks on the US embassy in Afghanistan.

Pakistani who helped CIA track down Osama

faces treason charges

Islamabad, Oct 6 (IANS): A Pakistani panel, investigating the US raid to kill Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad May 2, Thursday suggested registration of treason charges against a doctor who helped a fake CIA vaccination pro-gram in an attempt to obtain DNA from the Al Qaeda leader's family.

Shakil Afridi was arrested by the Pakistani security agency days after the US military helicopters killed the most wanted man in a compound where he was believed to have lived for years.

The US had reportedly pressurized Pakistan to release Afridi but the au-

thorities rejected the US demand."In view of the record and evi-

dence placed before the Commission in relation to Dr Shakeel Afridi, the Commission is of the view that prima facie, a case of conspiracy against the State of Pakistan and high treason is made out against him," a commission statement said.

Pakistani laws carry death penalty for high treason charges, legal experts say.

The statement said the commission has taken statements and investigated the wives and daughters of Osama bin Laden and they are no more re-quired by the commission.

It also withdrew its earlier order to restrain the Pakistani authorities from handing over the Osama family members to any country. It has now allowed his widows and daughters to leave the country.

The commission again interviewed the chief of the main intelligence agency Thursday for the second time in two days.

It conducted an exhaustive inter-view of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, Lt. Gen. Ahmad Shuja Pa-sha, to know his perspective leading to the Abbottabad incident.

The Commission also allowed the security forces to hand over the al-leged Osama compound/house at Abbottabad to the civil administra-tion for disposal in accordance with relevant law.

Indonesia, India expect bilateral trade to reach $25 bn by 2015

Jakarta, Oct 6 (IANS): In line with their fast-growing economies, India and Indonesia expect to enhance their economic coopera-tion to meet grow to $25 billion by 2015, media re-ports said Thursday. In-donesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said that India would con-tinue to be one of Indo-nesia's key trade partners in the future, especially during the present eco-nomic slowdown, Xinhua reported.

"Our strengthening relationship will also help us face the more turbulent years ahead in the world economy given our large domestic markets," she said at

the closing of the first bilateral trade ministers' forum here. During the two-day forum, the Indonesian and

Indian delegations held a pre-negotiation consul-tation on the Indonesia-India Comprehensive Economic Coop-eration Agreement (II-CECA), and discussed, among other things, trade barriers to products such as beef, medicine, food and areca nut seeds, and the problem of tariff struc-tures. Indian Com-

merce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said that bilateral economic cooperation in terms of trade and

investment had grown satisfactorily. "We have come to Indonesia with substantial investment in the infra-structure sector, ranging from rail-ways to power generation, textiles and smelteries, and (a further) $25 billion worth of investment is in the

pipeline. There is great potential as well as mutual opportunities that we can explore," the Jakarta Post quot-ed him as saying. Shar-

ma said India would continue to buy commodities from Indonesia to maintain its growth and sustain its food security, including palm oil, of which exports reached $7.5 billion last year. He said that the government did not plan to raise the import duty on Indonesia's palm oil.

European crisis threatening global recovery: Geithner

Washington, Oct 7 (IANS): US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner urged European lead-ers to take more forceful actions to contain the regional financial crisis threaten-ing the global economy. "The crisis in Europe presents a very significant risk to global recov-ery," Geithner said Thursday at a hearing of the Senate Banking Committee. "Europe is so large and so closely integrated with the US and world economies that a severe crisis in Europe could cause significant damage by undermin-ing confidence and weakening demand." Geithner told lawmak-ers that the crisis was slowing eco-

nomic growth in Europe, which represents a threat to the US econ-omy, Xinhua reported. "We want Europe to move and we want to make sure they move more aggres-

sively," Geith-ner said. The secretary urged European lead-ers to move more quickly to build up rescue funds to give nervous finan-cial markets greater assur-

ances that they have the resources to prevent a default by a European nation from jolting the global fi-nancial system. He also called for legislators to pass President Barack Obama's job plan to boost the US economy.

'Urbanization, increasing demand challenge for auto sector'

Chennai, Oct 6 (IANS): An effec-tive policy on urbanization, multi-modal transportation and appro-priate automotive technologies to meet future needs are important for India which will become the third largest market in the world for automotives by 2030, experts said here Thursday. According to TVS Motor Company CMD Venu Srinivasan, inaugurating the 16th Asia Pacific Automotive Engineer-ing Conference (APAC), India's oil demand will increase by five times

Hooda seeks Rs.200 bonus on paddyChandigarh, Oct 6 (IANS): Haryana Chief Minister Bhupin-der Singh Hooda Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmo-han Singh to announce a bonus of Rs.200 per quintal over and above the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy this season (2011-12). Hope prices come down, Pranab

wishes on Bijaya Dasami

Birbhum (West Bengal), Oct 6 (IANS): Wishing the people a happy 'Bijaya Dasami', union Fi-nance Minister Pranab Mukher-jee Thursday hoped that prices of essentials would come down and the growth rate go up. "I wish eve-rybody a happy Bijaya Dasami. I hope that everybody stays happy and fit," Mukherjee told reporters on the occasion of Bijaya Dasami at his ancestral home in Mirati, near Kirnahar in West Bengal's Birbhum district. "At the national level, as the finance minister of the country, I want the price of essential commodities to come down, a high growth rate and less fiscal deficit," said Mukherjee. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has conducted as many as 12 policy rate hikes in the past 20 months to tame the near double-digit infla-tion. Fiscal deficit also increased substantially in this fiscal and led to creation of inflationary pres-sures on the economic system. Some economists feel that the RBI's move to increase rate hikes would hamper growth of the economy.

Wall Street up for third dayNew York, Oct 7 (IANS): US stocks ended higher for the third straight day Thursday, with Dow Jones back to 11,000-plus points after decent jobs data and stronger-than-expected re-tail sales, Xinhua reported. The Dow Jones industrial average rallied 183.38 points, or 1.68 percent, to 11,123.33. The Standard & Poor's 500 jumped 20.94 points, or 1.83 percent, to 1,164.97. The Nasdaq Composite In-dex surged 46.31 points, or 1.88 per-cent, to 2,506.82. The strong three-day rally officially began from the last 30 minutes of trading Tuesday when a Financial Times report showed European Union finance ministers were looking into ways to recapital-ize banks after agreeing on additional measures to rescue the financial in-stitutions in the debt-ridden region. On Thursday, the European Central Bank announced to keep its bench-mark interest rate unchanged at 1.5 percent, disappointing some inves-tors. However, stocks got a boost after the central bank said it would buy bonds issued by banks, making it easier for them to lend. Meanwhile,

data released by the Labour Depart-ment showed the number of people applying for unemployment benefits rose by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 401,000 last week. The number pro-vided another evidence for the weak job market, although it was better than analysts had expected.

In addition, the US private sector added only 91,000 jobs in September, reflecting the recent deceleration of economic activity, according to an employment report released Wednes-day by Automatic Data Processing, Inc. The weekly figures of jobless benefits application reflect the level of layoffs and indicate the real-time condition of the US job market. By far, the blue-chip Dow rallied more than 4 percent in the last three ses-sions, the strongest three-day perfor-mance since late August. The broader S&P 500 jumped over 5 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq surged about 7 percent, both posting best three-day gains since mid-August. Among stocks in focus, shares of Apple showed strength and ended with very small losses of 0.23 percent after its

US economy needs 'jolt right now', says Obama

Washington, Oct 6 (IANS): Urging Congress to pass his $447 billion jobs bill without further delay, US Presi-dent Barack Obama Thursday said the US economy needs an immediate "jolt". "Our economy really needs a jolt right now," Obama told a White House news conference, adding the current crisis in Europe could have "a very real effect" on the US economy at a time when it's already fragile, re-ported Xinhua.

Obama challenges those sena-tors who are thinking about vot-ing against the bill to explain to the public. "Any senator out there who's thinking about voting against this jobs bill when it comes up for a vote needs to explain exactly why they would oppose something we know would improve our economic situa-

tion at such an urgent time," Obama said. Aiming to tackle near double digit unemployment and to spur the sluggish economy, Obama laid out on Sep 8 the American Jobs Act to provide tax cuts and credit, extend unemployment benefits and increase investment in infrastructure. The Senate is set to take up Obama's job bill next week after adding to the bill a tax increase on million-dollar earn-ers. Obama said he would support the new approach by Senate Demo-crats for paying for his jobs bill with a tax on millionaires rather than his plan to raise taxes on couples making more than $250,000.

But the tax on the rich approach is strongly opposed by Republicans, who arguing that Obama was declar-ing war on the job creators.

iconic co-founder Steve Jobs passed away Wednesday. Survey showed 96 percent of analysts covering the stock recommended buying the stock and saw it growing by about 35 percent over the next year. The median price target for Apple is $500 a share, ac-cording to analysts.

It's a well-worn cliche to speak of the end of an era when someone well known has passed away. To-

day, however, it does feel like some-thing has changed forever in the world of tech.

The brilliance and clarity of vision, the courage of conviction, the fiery intolerance for imperfection. I really don't see another individual impact-ing technology in anywhere near the same way, in our era, as Steven Paul

Jobs did.He wasn't just the guy who made

the world's coolest gadgets. Oh, well, that too. I don't know of any other company for whose products buy-ers queue up for three days ahead of launch.

Steve Jobs created markets and product categories. He changed how we consume information and enter-tainment. He redefined leadership.

I can't think of another person

whom I have been so proud to have merely met, once, for a few minutes, or sat through as many as two of his "oh, and one more thing" launches. When he pulled that first iPod out of his jeans pocket, we all stood up, and I didn't even notice when my new note-book slid from my lap and cracked its display. It was a small price to pay to be a part of a piece of history, to ex-perience the famous Jobs near-field distortion. "The Force is strong with

him", an elderly, pony-tailed journo sitting next to me said, perhaps to console me.

There's so much about Steve Jobs that marks him out from the many tech visionaries that dot Silicon Val-ley and the rest of the world. His never-say-die reinvention of himself and the companies he started, repeat-edly turning adversity into advan-tage, described most famously in his Stanford address. His candor about shamelessly stealing the best ideas he came across, and then turning them into life-changing gadgets. His violent intolerance for 'good enough', making life hell for his design and execution teams, but turning out ex-traordinary products.

Can you think of another person who would have had the vi-sion to take his com-pany into uncharted waters like a mobile phone with no keypad, which no market re-search had showed any demand for, and then change the world with that? Or who'd have the courage to bet upon and live with one, just one, model to take on the world's phone vendors - and then to edge them out, with the world's most brilliant, and most profitable smart phone? Or have the vision and execution to back great design with the amazing apps and accessories ecosystem that led to the re-invention of the tablet?

This is a eulogy from a non-fanboy, and indeed something of an Apple critic. Though my first computer was an Apple IIc and my home is today dotted with iPads and iPods, I am no fan of Apple's closed-garden ap-proach, its secrecy and indeed its ar-rogance, or its historical lack of inter-est in India.

I know that all of these largely de-rive from Steve Jobs, despite his old ties with India, which famously made a big impression on him as he back-packed through it (or when he went for his meals to a Hare Krishna tem-ple in California).

But we lived with all that, and still bought Apple products. The secrecy

and arrogance were an insepa-rable, even nec-essary part of the picture of Steve Jobs and Apple, especially if you go by results: stunning, life-changing lifestyle devices.

With every chapter that ends, there is a new beginning.

Of course the world, and Apple, will produce more outstanding, life-changing products. But yes, some-thing has changed in the world of tech today, leaving (for Star Wars fans) not just a disturbance, but also a major discontinuity, in the Force.

(IANS)

How Steve Jobs changed the worldWashington, Oct 6 (IANS) Apple's visionary co-founder Steve Jobs put his own stamp on everything from the personal computer to the music industry in myriad ways.

For Jobs, how a product looked, felt and responded trumped raw technical specifications. While PC makers chased after faster processor speeds, Jobs pursued clever, mini-malist design, noted Fortune maga-zine listing the ways he changed the world.

Apple's titanium-turned-alumini-um notebooks have became bestsell-ers. The most recent MacBook Air models have been held up as exam-ples of the ideal intersection of de-sign, price and performance.

Launched in 2003, iTunes has become the largest online music retailer in the world, with over 200

million registered users who have downloaded 15 billion songs. The fall 2011 launch of a cloud-based iTunes service should only further cement that standing.

Much has happened since Apple II, a mass-produced 8-bit computer encased in plastic that became one of the most successful PCs of the 1980, revolutionised the way people work.

But despite the rise of Windows-based computers, Mac sales continue to climb. In fact, Mac sales for the September 2011 quarter are expected to come in between 4.4 million and 4.6 million, a new record.

In the "post-PC" era tablet-laptop hybrid iPad has sold nearly 14.7 million units in 2010, and just last quarter, sales exploded 183 percent, proving that many people want a siz-able yet portable device they can take

anywhere.Apple operating systems were al-

ways intended to be simpler than the competition -- MS-DOS, Win-dows or Linux -- and that approach is readily apparent, whether it's Mac OS System 7 or Mac OSX, software largely derived from Jobs' work at NeXT.

Ultimately, Jobs' biggest contribu-tion isn't just a smartphone, a tablet or an operating system, but Apple itself, a 12,000-strong organization that was once on the brink of irrel-evance, Fortune said.

Since his return to the company in 1997, Jobs rebuilt it into the most valuable technology company in the world, surpassing other heavy-weights like Microsoft or HP. It may indeed be the greatest turnaround in business history, it said.

Steve Jobs turned smallest of ideasinto life-changing products

Located in the heart of the capital city, this market has something for everyone. Small shops that sell goods like, silver ornaments, curios, cot-ton clothes, exotic ensembles and Indian artifacts and carpets will give you enough time to search for your likings and make sure you carry bags full of goods when you drive back home.

Bargaining culture.

Rajiv Chowk

We would not blink an eye, if you were to call the Paharganj market chaotic, crumbling or even messy for that matter, as it combines all

these elements. However, in those tiny, crowded lanes lies the beauty

of the hidden shopping mantras. From textiles to handicrafts,

books to handmade products you will find it all and that too at

a very low price! And one must not forget to mention that you

can always bargain to make sure your wallet doesn't lose too much

weight.

Sam’s café and other open terrace café’s that are good

to go for a nice evening beer once you are through

shopping and sweating.

New Delhi Station

Built in 17th century by Shah Jahan and designed by his daughter Jahan Ara, this market was once divided by canals to reflect the moonlight; however that aspect has long since been closed. Nevertheless it remains one of Asia's largest whole sale markets. For foreign tourists, navigation is easy as the lanes are divided into markets as per their specialty. For e.g. for fabrics it is Katra Neel, electronics are found at Bhagirath Palace Area, Dariba Kalan for jewelry and last but not the least, the amazing variety of food joints that leave you spoilt for choice!

Ever famous Jalebi Wala

Chandni Chowk

Amongst the best flea markets in the city, Lajpat Nagar with its broad pathways place on offer almost anything you can think of! The famous Central Market there is known for its sale season that never ends; and is a delight for the shopahol-ics in South Delhi and of course it also catches the eye of foreign tourists due to its upscale locality.

Tea houses and antique shops

Moolchand

Based on the theme of village markets, Dilli Haat is for those who like handicrafts and handloom products. And if you are someone who enjoys sumptuous food at affordable prices, then the food joints here will keep you glued to your plates. From the Manipur house to the South Indian Thalis you will get all the options at very reasonable rates, and if you are looking for a memento you could even try getting your name engraved on a piece of rice!

Who you think is a super hero is actually just a side kick!

Live in the present!

You are the champion, my friend!

It’s your time to shine and “Share” !

Why are you looking at a gift horse in the mouth?

Years ago, adverts appeared in comic books for ‘X-Ray Specs’. With these, you were able to ‘see’ through clothing and flesh. A great gimmick, but we never see adverts for rose-tinted spectacles despite demand for them and the fact they’re so widely used. How realistic are you being where your opinion of someone is concerned? It could be time to accept they may not be quite so deserving of the pedestal you’ve put them on.

March 21 - April 19Aries

You already know the answers!

Once upon a time, to reach the masses, you’d have to convince a newspaper or magazine editor that you had a story worthy of publishing. Nowadays, websites, apps and other technologies facilitate this. With the push of a button, we can communicate instantly with large groups of people. The sky speaks of a need to convey yourself on a grander scale than you might be used to. Use whatever resources are available to make a point to those willing to listen.

May 21 - June 20Gemini

‘It ain’t what they call you, it’s what you answer to that matters’. WC Fields’ comment holds some relevance to you now. Focus ex-ists on how you believe you’re perceived by others. A question that holds more relevance is, how do you want to be seen by others? Your ruling planet’s link to Neptune now heralds a time of heartwarming confirma-tion, if it was actually needed, of how highly regarded you are.

Sept. 23 - Oct. 22Libra

In any good film or story, end of second acts always culminate with dramatic turning points. The hero has struggled, thinks their struggle is over and believes they can relax. A sudden development confirms they un-derestimated their situation and are required to muster all strength and courage to win the day. Your struggle has reached a turning point. Prepare now to experience victory.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 21Scorpio

‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get’. This well-known phrase holds much truth yet we’re aware of how we sometimes obtain what we desire without necessarily asking for it. Sometimes, what we want or need is made available without us making any formal requests for it. Perhaps though, through unconscious effort made on our behalf, we made what we desired appear. Don’t question now how or why something has suddenly appeared, just welcome it.

Nov. 22 - Dec. 21Sagittarius

Satellite navigations systems have much to answer for. There are many tales of cars end-ing up in the middle of nowhere surrounded by cows when drivers thought a major city was the intended destination. Today’s aspect between your ruler and Neptune suggests a need to assess how ‘on track’ you are with a plan. Is what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis working or likely to get you to where you need to be? Look beyond the dream at what’s realistically attainable.

Remember, blood is thicker than water and it’s always messier to clean up as well!

It’s going to happen… wait for it!

So jump in with both feet!

The stars are on your side!

Relax, it’s pay day!

Just don’t bite off more than you can chew!

A home or family matter remains very much in the spotlight now, but today’s Venus/Neptune conjunction brings a new slant to things. Venus brings an increase in comfort and relief to a domestic drama but Neptune’s influence could cause something important to be overlooked. As lovely as it is to be punching the air with joy and relief be certain that you haven’t inadvertently ignored a family-related factor.

June 21 - July 22Cancer

In his poem about ‘Annabel Lee’, Edgar Allen Poe wrote ‘we loved with a love that was more than love’. Only someone who was truly smitten could have written such words. Infatuation or desire with someone or something on your part could be encouraging you to make some grand, inspired or overly romantic statements now. The really lovely part to all of this is you truly mean them.

July 23 - Aug. 22Leo

Being summoned to the boss’s office always causes momentary silence and anxious-ness from co-workers but you needn’t be concerned about career-related news you receive now. You’re receiving the strongest ray of hope possible through today’s Venus/Neptune conjunction and a positive devel-opment where your earnings and career are related is assured!

Aug. 23 - Sept. 22Virgo

If there’s someone at a distance you’re grown even more distant from lately, today’s auspi-cious aspect involving Neptune in your sign could bring you closer together. Alterna-tively, if there’s something you’ve wanted to learn or study, then an opportunity to do either or both could present itself. Ancient astrologers deemed the area of your chart being touched by Neptune’s influence now to rule travel, people from afar and learning. Take your pick and see what transpires.

Jan. 20 - Feb. 18Aquarius

Money-related communication is promi-nent now and if you’ve been sticking your head in the sand or constantly promising someone that payment’s on its way, then resolution could finally be reached. It’s also important someone with whom mutual respect exists understands you haven’t been deliberately avoiding them. You’ve had much on your plate lately and they’ll probably be more understanding than you suspect they will.

Feb. 19 - March 20Pisces

From a Sun Sign perspective, Libra rules your career and how you’re seen by others. Aquarius rules your earnings and material possessions. If the current conjunction between Venus and Neptune in these signs doesn’t bring you some form of good news and optimism where your material status is concerned, then I don’t know what will. Your days of living hand-to-mouth are over, my Capricornian friend.

Top 5 Beer Capitals

Content Provided

By:

To choose the best of anything is difficult, but to narrow down on the five best beer cities is really, really tough! So how do we choose? Do we go by which city has the most number of breweries or bars, or do we go by how many types of beer are served? Does it matter? Just go and bend you elbow at a bar at any one of the cities listed below and down mugs of

the great mellow yellow liquid – here’s to beer. Cheers! Prost! Salud!

The Czech Republic is the world’s number one beer drinking nation, so no prizes for guessing why Prague is on this list. The Czechs have been brewing beer for over 1000 years and claim that they are the biggest beer-guzzling na-tion in the world with a whopping per capita number of 157 litres! The Czechs like to drink their beer on the tap. They say it tastes much better than beer that has been bottled or canned. So go on a beer crawl and get sloshed, coz in Prague drinking beer is cheaper than drinking water. It can’t get any better than that, can it ?

The Irish sure know their beer, or more precisely Guinness. Guinness is a dark stout made from roasted malt, and is almost a second name for Dublin. Spend some time at Dub-lin’s pubs, and you are bound to have a great time in the friendly back-slapping atmosphere. A pit stop at St James’ Gate, the largest brewer of stout in the world, is a must for any beer loving person. Oh, and just by the way the best view of Dublin is from the seventh floor of the 250 year old brewery – Guinness Storehouse !

The tiny town of Bamberg in Bavaria is big on beer. There are all of nine breweries here that produce 50 dif-ferent beers, of which the specialty is Rauch-bier, a smoked beer. Lots of good quality cheap beer is available in Bamberg and the bars and beer gardens are busy through the year serving beer to the thirsty. So come to Bamberg as a regular beer drinker and leave as a connoisseur - that’s what beer drinking in Bamberg does to you!

Given Montreal’s oh- so- French air, one would think that wine is the fa-voured drink here. But you’re wrong. Beer is the number one drink of Montreal. With more micro brewer-ies and brewpubs than we can count, Montreal throws up a variety of beers to choose from and they are based on their colour: blonde, rousse (red), ambrée (amber), and noir (dark) – so when at a bar be sure to order your colour preference instead of ale or lager!

In Sydney Fosters may not be the most popular beer – the locally brewed Toohey is- but beer is definitely the drink that is top of the pops or should we say ‘hops’ in Australia. Sydney is a beer drinking city with loads of bars and pubs at CBD where everyone heads to after a day’s work to hang out and just chill out with a cold, cold beer. Statistics have it that a single Austral-ian consumes 110 litres of beer annu-ally. That’s a hell of lot of beer, wouldn’t you say ?

Fashion trends seem to be getting more and more adventurous with every passing season. Designers are thinking out of the box and instead of toeing the safety line, they’re literally jumping out of the safety zone with flourish. Therefore, it’s little wonder that this season’s denim must-haves are as fabulous as they are!

Jeggings Colored Skinny Jeans

Denim Shorts (Daisy Dukes)

Distressed or Ripped DenimsThe genius who came up with this concept obviously knew what women

wanted! As the name suggests, jeggings combine leggings with jeans and have a (thank God!) slimming effect. But Remember! You have to choose a style that complements your body type. For ex-ample- if you’re on the shorter side, go for the ‘petite’ and not the ‘regular’ variety

because otherwise, the material will bunch up around your ankles. Colors We Love- Grey and black because they’re versatile and even more slimming!

Celebrities like Kim Kar-dashian and Victoria Beck-ham have been sporting bright, shaded jeans for a while now but outside tinsel town, they’ve only recently come

into vogue! They’re eye-catching be-cause they’re

different and break the monotony cre-ated by blue denims over the years. The Tricky Part- It is essential that these denims are combined with plain t-shirts because it’s difficult to select a pattern that doesn’t clash with a bold color. Colors We Love- Purple, red and aqua be-cause they work well with every body type.

If you have the legs for it, denim shorts should feature highest on your shopping list this season! While the low-waisted variety looks good with both fitted and loose tops, it is imperative that high -waisted denim shorts are worn only with tops that have a looser fit or cropped t-shirts. The Multi-Tasker- The great bit about daisy dukes is that they never look out of place, no matter what the occasion may be. For example- for a day out with the family, combine denim shorts with a t-shirt or white shirt but if you’re meeting up with some girlfriends after, swap the t-shirt with a colorful halter and you’re good to go! They can also be worn with colorful leggings in the winter. Colors We Love- Denim shorts look great in every color of the rainbow so go ahead and take your pick!

While it cannot be ignored that these den-ims are not the most versatile of the lot, it has to be said that they’ve been in vogue for a long time which is why we’ve come to the conclusion that they’re here to stay! What to Avoid- Stay away from distressed jeans or shorts that have way too many rips in them. You don’t want to end up looking like something the cat dragged in!But Remember! The placement of the rips plays a large part in determining whether you end up looking slimmer or bulkier than you are. Horizontal rips, for example, will add inches to your hips whereas you’ll look more slender if the rips are vertical.

Must -have Denims this SeasonAanchal Ghai, [email protected]

A water fountain in your home can be an extremely valuable asset. Fresh clean water is symbolic of good health, positive energies, good cash flow and a lack of stagnation in your career.

Make sure that there is no water placed in the south-west of your home or its surrounding, as it is the most inauspicious for relation-ships.

Do not have water symbolism inside the bedroom. It attracts the Ch’i of loss and water in the bedroom causes relationship problems. Hence pictures, posters of landscapes with waterfall or painting of lake and rivers can be used elsewhere in the house.

Do not sit with any wa-ter feature behind you, always make sure to have a solid wall behind you for support.

Make sure that there is no wa-ter feature on the right-hand side of the main front door (looking out from inside).

Avoid placing any kind of wa-ter feature under the staircase, as it effects children’s wealth luck.

Place a fountain or cascade of water outside your front door, on the right hand side of the door (as you enter). This allows good fortune and abundance to flow into your front door. Also you can place an aquarium or foun-tain in the prosperity or the wealth area of your home .

Make sure that all drains are free flowing to stimulate flow of fi-nances. Do not let water stagnate in drains.

The water Ch’i energy of the north is associated with independence, so exposure to this will stop you from relying heavily on other people’s opinions. It also encourages money to flow towards you.

Round or rectangular shape aquariums are bet-ter than square ones, keeping nine goldfish with one black and eight golden. Aquarium bubbling with water attracts the prosperity Ch’i into your house. If placed in the office, place a light shining into the aquarium so that flickering shadows are reflected on the ceiling. This helps in business turnover – increasing your sales and profits .

Even the placement of a photo or painting of a stream, river or lake in the wealth area of the house can help increase prosperity. If you energize it correctly and in proper alignments with the other energies so that there is an auspicious balance, water energy will make you rich and prosperous beyond your expectations.

Ideal Placement: avoid these Placements:

getting a continuous flow of wealth luck into your house or workplace. Every person is born with the Wealth luck and has the ability to become rich, and with

feng shui we can speed up the ripening of your wealth luck .

As 70 per cent of the human body weight is made up of water, placing these features correctly in your surrounding will have a significant effect on your

personal Ch’i energy.

Sports Butt agreed to 'bat maiden over ': Court

London, Oct 6 (IANS) Former Paki-stan skipper Salman Butt agreed to score no runs in an over during last year's Oval Test match against Eng-land as part of a betting scam.

Butt and fast bowler Mohammed Asif are accused of receiving money to deliberately bowl no-balls at a specified time during the Test match in August last year.

During the hearing of the case Thursday, prosecutors claimed a

Subcontinent gambles $50 bn on cricket, London court told

London, Oct 6 (IANS) Jurors in a London Crown Court were told that cricket betting syndi-cates were controlled and orches-trated by shadowy figures based in Dubai, Mumbai, London and Karachi and some $50 billion was gambled away in the Asian subcontinent alone on matches played around the world and beamed live on satellite television.

Aftab Jafferjee, a Queen's Counsel appearing on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service, said that even if that figure was reduced by a tenth it "not unsur-prisingly makes 'spot' fixing and match fixing irresistible to some",

reports the Telegraph. The agent of accused Pakistani

cricketers Mazhar Majeed had told an undercover reporter that fixing the outcome of a Test match had been achieved in the past and could be arranged for a fee of 1 million pounds.

On the first full day of the trial of former Pakistan captain Sal-man Butt and fast bowler Mo-hammad Asif in London's South-wark Crown Court, Jafferjee said the betting industry developed in the 1990s and bets are taken out seconds before the event with "breathtaking" amounts involved in illegal betting.

Advantage Mumbai, says coach Pollock

Chennai, Oct 6 (IANS) Having played two of their four Group A fixtures here at Chepauk, as against none by their semi-final rivals Somerset, coach Shaun Pol-lock believes that his team Mum-bai Indians have more than a whiff of chance to win the Champions League T20 game to be played Sat-urday.

Of more significance is that Mumbai are aware what to expect from the Chepauk pitch that has attracted more than its share of at-tention owing to the nature of the surface that has been on the slower and lower side, said Pollock.

"I think we have to just adjust on the day. I mean we don't quite know how the pitch is going to

play until we see how the first five or six deliveries behave," said Pol-lock at a media conference here on Thursday.

Despite former Aussie star An-drew Symonds' poor form with the bat, Pollock asserted that the all-rounder still has a lot to con-tribute by way of his vast experi-ence and that he has specific role to play within the team's game-plan while responding to a query whether he would be promoted in the batting order.

Pollock had a word of praise for skipper Harbhajan Singh saying the off-spinner had shouldered the responsibility with aplomb in the absence of injured Sachin Ten-dulkar.

Ivanovic gets wild card to defend Bali title Beijing, Oct 6 (IANS) Former World Num-ber One Ana Ivanovic of Serbia will return to Bali in November to defend her Common-wealth Bank Tournament of Champions title after receiving the first wild card for the event Thursday.

Last year Ivanovic emerged victorious in the eight-player field, which brings together the best performers of the season from the in-ternational series of WTA tournaments.

"It almost goes without saying Bali is one of the most beautiful places on the tennis circuit - probably the best," said Ivanovic, who is cur-rently playing in the China Open in Beijing.

"I had a wonderful time there last year. Off the court I was able to relax on the beach, but on the court I played some of my best tennis and was so happy to win the title.

She is in the quarterfinals at the China Open and will take the court again on Friday.

tape recording, which showed that 26-year-old Butt agreed to play a maiden on the final day of the Test, which was a chance for his side to win their first game of the series, Daily Mail reported.

His London-based sports agent, Mazhar Majeed, 36, agreed a deal with an undercover journalist pos-ing as a rich Indian businessman who had paid 10,000 pounds to fix part of the match over phone, Southwark Crown Court heard.

Majeed assured the reporter, Maz-her Mahmood, of the now defunct News of the World that Butt would

score no runs in his first full over at The Oval the next day, Aug 21.

The agent rang the cricketer on speaker phone to prove he was in-volved in the fixing scam, the court heard.

Majeed named 'his' players as Butt, fast bowlers Mohammed Asif, Mo-hammed Aamer and Wahab Riaz, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, and batsmen Umar Akmal and Imran Farhat.

However, Jafferjee said the agent explained that there was a 'little ques-tion mark' about Farhat.

Suzuka (Japan), Oct 6 (IANS): Force India driver Adrian Sutil says his team can pip Renault for fifth place by the end of the Formula One sea-son.

Sutil has got every reason to be confident about Force India's up-ward rise in the Constructors'

Championship ahead of the remain-ing five races in the season.

Force India, currently sixth in the standings, has collected 36 of its 48 points in the last five races with the best result coming in Singapore, where Paul di Resta and Sutil fin-ished sixth and eighth respectively.

"Things look pretty promising right now. And yes, I think it (over-taking Renault) is possible," the of-ficial Formula One website quoted Sutil as saying.

Force India's chances of ending at fifth place also look good because of Renault's poor run in the last five races where the British team has managed just five points. Renault has 70 points courtesy drivers Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna.

Sutil attributes the recent success of the team to the improved reliabil-ity of the VJM04 car.

Talking about the race this week-end, Sutil said: "Suzuka is a very dif-ferent track to Singapore - so we have to wait and see - but my guess is that we will be competitive."
