DNAS Museum Volunteers make a presentation at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University regarding another recovery project for a WWII SBD-5 aircraft that has been discovered in a local lake. The students being taught by Anthony Brickhouse, Associate Professor, are members of the ERAU Student Chapter of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators (ISASI). They will partner with DNASM in the recovery effort by working as a group to develop a re-creation of the WWII crash site based on the Navy flight data that is available and current technology. A field trip to the lake is being coordinated in the near future.

Our thanks and appreciation goes to the City of DeLand and Ronald Herman, All Quality Products, for their planning assistance and donation of supplies for a new pavilion roof that is being constructed over our existing concrete slab behind the museum. This covered area will provide a multi-use public area that can be utilized for educational programs, fundraisers and displays of historic military memorabilia. DNAS Museum Volunteers will donate their time to finish the construction of the project.

Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Noon in the Palm Court of Stetson University beside the New Welcome Center, the West Volusia Historical Society (WVHS) is launching its touring phone app for DeLand. This FREE app is the product of a partnership between the WVHS, the Florida Humanities Council (FHC), and cost-share sponsors within our local community. Our ceremony is conveniently timed to take place after DeLand’s Veteran’s Day Parade and will allow you the opportunity to tour DeLand and discover some of its many historic landmarks and cultural treasures. See for yourself why DeLand is referred to as The Athens of Florida. The DeLand Naval Air Station Museum greatly appreciates the on-going efforts of Osteen Resident, Rodney Thomas and his quest to bring closure on the WWII SBD-5 plane crash site he discovered on his property almost five

years ago. Many Volunteers and community organizations joined in his quest to identify the young Navy pilot who died on the site in 1944. Ensign William Thornton Bellmire of Delta, Colorado was identified and his distant relatives were also located. Soon we will be announcing a memorial service and unveiling of the plaque that has been placed on the crash site. As DeLand’s Sport Aviation Village comes to life, DeLand Airport Manager John Eiff and Sport Aviation Administrator Jana Filip are busy planning DeLand’s first-ever Sport Aviation Showcase set for November 3-5, 2016. It’s being held immediately after the 2016 NBAA Convention in Orlando, Florida, to make it easy for industry and media to visit

DeLand while they are already in the local area.

Designed to be small in nature, the 2016 Preview Showcase will offer people an opportunity to become familiar with the DeLand Airport and the community of DeLand. Jana said, “Our goal is to create an annual destination event for recreational aircraft enthusiasts from the U.S. and the world. DeLand is a progressive community offering a wide variety of social, cultural, and recreational activities along with a great climate, making it a wonderful location for sport aviation enthusiasts to visit or even call home.”

Jana added, “We invite prospective exhibitors to review the event site map. The 2016 event will welcome up to 40 indoor and 40 outdoor exhibitors, with electricity available to all indoor exhibitors.” In addition, forum and workshop facilities are also being established with full services, as well as the food vendor area. A separate entrance for exhibitors and media will make entry/exit from the event easy for those participants. For visitors flying in to the event, under-wing camping will be available with portable toilets, and there will be a designated homebuilt parking area on the Showcase field. Make your plans now to attend DeLand’s Showcase 2016!

Gene Edward Storz, age 92, is a WWII Veteran who served in the United States Navy. He was an Aircraft Mechanic for the B24 bomber aircraft with assignments in Norman, Oklahoma, San Diego, California, Hutchinson, Kansas and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Gene and his late wife Fay raised their family in Grants Pass and Brookings Oregon

where he was a businessman and Farm Co-op Manager. After retirement Gene moved

to DeLand Florida. For many years, he sang with the Great Expectations Men’s Choir,

performing at local events and community clubs. He is an active member of the

DeLand Naval Air Station Museum, serving on their Board of Directors and vintage

aircraft Restoration Crew. Gene joins other volunteers in assisting with many

restoration projects such as a WWII Grumman TBF Avenger aircraft that was pulled

from the bottom of Lake Michigan after 60 years. Gene has three children, Joe Storz,

U.S. Navy Veteran, Karen Storz, U.S. Army Veteran (Viet Nam) and Scott Storz, Special

Projects Manager for the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum.
