SIXTH GRADE HOUSE

Hello, Terrier Family. The first quarter was a great transition for our 6th grade students. They are now acclimated with their classroom and school expectations, class changes, and lockers. This quarter, I know our students will work even harder to make sure they are prepared for classroom activities, homework, future tests, quizzes, and projects. Terriers take pride in their academic and social success, seek assistance when needed, and participate in school and commu-nity activities.

Key Elements to Success

Follow classroom and school rules Study for tests and quizzes Turn in ALL assignments

Remediate summative assessments (as needed) Keep an organized binder

Promote positive peer interactions

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s academic or social progress, please contact Natasha Horne at 822-5678 ext. 23041 or [email protected].

RED RIBBON WEEK

Red Ribbon Week is being celebrated October 27-October 31, and this year’s theme is “Love Yourself: Be Drug Free”. Besides the campus being decorated for the week, DeLand Middle will have a door-decorating contest with prizes for the top 3 doors. The band will march and play to kick off the week on Monday. There will be themes daily where students and staff may participate by dressing to match the themes such as “Sock It To drugs” day where everyone wears crazy socks or “Team Up Against Drugs” by wearing their favorite team jerseys.

Red Ribbon History The Story Behind the Symbol

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena grew up in a dirt-floored house with hopes and dreams of making a differ-

ence.

Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When

he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out it. "I

can't do this," he told her. "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference."

The DEA sent Camarena to work undercover in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel believed to

include officers in the Mexican army, police and government. On Feb. 7, 1985, the 37-year-old Cama-

rena left his office to meet his wife for lunch. Five men appeared at the agent's side and shoved him in

a car. One month later, Camarena's body was found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to

death. 1

Within weeks of his death in March of 1985, Camarena's Congressman, Duncan Hunter, and high

school friend Henry Lozano, launched Camarena Clubs in Imperial Valley, California, Camarena's

home. Hundreds of club members pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor the sacrifices made by

Camarena and others on behalf of all Americans. 2 These coalitions began to wear red badges of satin,

red ribbons, as a symbol Camarena's memory. The Red Ribbon Week campaign emerged from the ef-

forts of these clubs and coalitions.

Today, Red Ribbon Week is nationally recognized and celebrated, helping to preserve Special Agent

Camarena's memory and further the cause for

which he gave his life. The Red Ribbon Campaign

also became a symbol of support for the DEA's

efforts to reduce demand for drugs through pre-

vention and education programs. By wearing a

red ribbon during the last week in October,

Americans demonstrate their ardent opposition

to drugs. They pay homage not only to Special

Agent Camarena, but to all men and women who

have made the ultimate sacrifice in support of

our nation's struggle against drug trafficking and

abuse. 3

NEWS FROM THE S.R.O.

Florida joins other states across the country to observe National School Bus Safety Week on Oct. 20-24, 2014. The special week commemorates the safe service that school buses provide to families, as they provide one of the safest modes of trans-portation for children.

According to a Florida Department of Education survey conducted in April 2012, more than 21,000 drivers illegally passed school buses on a one day survey. That represents over 3.7 million possible violations by motorists in Florida during the 180-day school year. Each illegal pass-by could result in a tragic injury or fatality of a student. The inconvenience of an extra few seconds spent waiting for a stopped school bus is insignificant compared to the loss of a child's life, which is why Florida’s de-partments of Education, Transportation, and Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, have teamed up to develop the Stop on Red, Kids Ahead campaign to remind drivers of the laws and safe practices to take when approaching a school bus.

Drivers who improperly pass a stopped school bus commit a moving violation subject to citation and will be required to complete a basic Driver Improvement Course upon conviction.

It is highly recommended that any girl interested in trying out come to open gyms. The remaining open gyms are Friday November 8, Friday December 12, Friday January 9, and Friday Febru-ary 6. The times are from 3:45 until 5:15. I hope to see any interested girls there. -Coach Dalia

Sixth grade world history classes started the year off learning about the Mesopotamian early riv-er civilizations. After learning about cave paintings, we went on an exciting “field trip”, and we were able to crawl through “caves” searching for artifacts. We have also learned about four em-pires of Mesopotamia: the Akkadians, the Babylonians, the Assyrians and the Neo-Babylonians. As a culminating activity, groups created plays, videos and movie trailers to teach the rest of the class about their assigned empire.

During the second nine weeks, we will be studying Ancient Egypt and Ancient India, and we have many exciting activities and “field trips” planned—including making “mummies” and building pyramids. Stay tuned for the continuing adventures of sixth grade world history classes!

All of Ms. Kohlier’s math classes would like to welcome our Senior Intern Mr. Cioffi. Mr. Cioffi has been working really hard teaching and tutoring to make sure all students are able to do their best.

Grade 6 Honors: Our 6th graders have been working on multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals; integers, number theory, and algebraic expressions. They are doing a fantastic job working together and learning from each other.

Algebra 1 Honors: The 7th graders have been working on solving equations and inequalities, slope, and linear equations. They will be moving forward studying functions and exponential relationships. These students have an amazing work ethic and are very helpful to each other.

Algebra 2 Honors: The 8th graders are moving quite quickly reviewing factoring and linear functions and learning quadratics and systems. Polynomial relationships will be their next adventure. Algebra 2 is a very challenging class, and these students are really rising to meet the high expectations of the course-work.

Parents: Remember all Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students will be taking the Florida Standards Assess-ment End-of-Course exam that will be counted as 30% of their final average. Students must receive a Level 3 to pass and receive high school credit for the course.

FFAFFAFFA

The students in agriculture class and FFA members have started off the school year with a bang!

The theme for the FFA year, This is How We Roll, is represented in every activity. The year start-

ed with Chapter Officer Retreat, Chapter President’s Conference, and Chapter Officer Leadership

Training for the FFA officers. From these leadership conferences, the officers developed lessons to

present at the FFA meetings held each month. Social activities have included the annual Welcome

Back BBQ, Bowling Extravaganza, Ice Skating Night and Federation Fall Round Up. Students

have exhibited their livestock projects at the Swine in the Pines Jackpot Show and the East Coast

Classic Jackpot Show, hosted by DeLand FFA Alumni. Members are traveling to the National FFA

Convention October 28th thru November 2nd in Louisville, Kentucky, to receive the 3 Star Nation-

al Chapter Award for the chapter. Upon the return, members will be gearing up for the Volusia

County Fair, November 6-16th.

In agriculture class, the students have been learning about the importance of the agriculture in-

dustry, careers in agriculture, animal husbandry and leadership. In the interactive lab lessons,

students have sheared lambs and goats, given lambs baths, worked with swine and fed and cleaned

swine pens. Moving in to the new nine weeks, the students will be working in food science, animal

science, and environmental sciences. The classes will be planting seeds and learning about proper

care of a garden, as well as preparing for the lVolusia County Fair with their poster projects.
