Four Year Plans

Eighth grade students have completed their 4-year plans for high school. Students completed their plans during their U.S. History and Career Planning course and were able to bring the plan home. Counselors also reviewed the current graduation requirements for the Class of 2017 and a copy of these requirements were listed on the back of the 4-year pans. Please contact Mrs. Caime, 8th grade counselor, with any questions at 822-5678 ext. 23034.

Credits

This is just a reminder that in order for 8th grade students to be pro-moted to the 9th grade, they must earn 12 credits in the core subjects by the end of their 8th grade year.

That would be 3 credits in each of the following core courses:

*Mathematics

*Language Arts

*Science

*Social Studies

A credit is earned at the end of each year that a student passes one of these courses. Please make sure your student is working hard to earn these credits and a promotion to 9th grade.

What is an EOC or End of Course exam?

What is an EOC or End of Course exam?

EOC (End of Course) assessments are computer-based, criterion-referenced as-sessments that measure the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for specific courses, as outlined in their course descriptions. The first assessment to begin the transition to end-of-course testing in Florida was the 2011 Algebra 1 EOC Assess-ment. The U.S. History EOC Assessment will be administered for the first time in spring 2013, and the Civics EOC Assessment will be administered for the first time in spring 2014. New Achievement Levels for the Algebra 1 EOC Assessment were approved in 2011 through a standard-setting process. For more information, access the following website: http://fcat.fldoe.org/eoc/

The Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches program is a voluntary residential facility that strives to pro-vide Florida’s youth with a loving, home environment, a structured daily routine, educational opportuni-ties, therapeutic counseling, and a work program to develop good work ethics for the future. We serve young men at our Boys Ranch location in Live Oak,Fl and the Bradenton location. Young ladies are housed at our Youth Villa in Bartow, Fl. Our age range in from 8 to 17, though the younger ages will depend on current census due to housing requirements for roommates. We like the youth to stay for at least a year, but the actual length of time is determined by progress and cooperation on both the youth and parents’ part.

When considering an applicant for the Ranches, we take into account :behaviors at home and in a school setting; school grades and academic level; mental health diagnosis or evaluations and medica-tions; dealings with Department of Juvenile Justice and arrests past or present; Baker Acts or Stuart Marchman Acts and accompanying evaluations; drug use history; self harm history or threats; runaway history; sexually acting out behavior; Department of Children and Families involvement; abuse reports or allegations. As we are not a treatment or lockdown facility, we are not able to work with some mental health diagnoses or behaviors. Each child is evaluated and must be approved to move forward in the process: Screening; Application; Interview; Admission. A monthly tuition payment is required of each family and is based on the household size and income OR if any money is received for the child, such as SSI, child support, or adoption subsidy. This amount would come to the program while the child is enrolled.

While in program, the youth will live in one of our cottages with 9 other youth. They share a

room and are responsible for their space and laundry. Each youth will have assigned chores for the day

that are tracked on a chart in the cottage. The cottages are managed by our cottage parents, who run it

like a normal household. All the youth participate in a work program that offers different opportunities

depending on the campus and must complete a certain number of hours each week. Children attend

school either off campus in a public school or in our Learning Centers, depending on their grade level

and which program they are located at. The youth enter the program with a list of goals laying out the

behaviors that they want to change or improve. These goals are the basis for the therapeutic counseling

that our therapists conduct with the youth while they are in program. The child will have individual and

group sessions and their progress is monitored by quarterly treatment plan reviews. Parents are encour-

aged to be a part of the reviews to maintain communication and support. Each week, the youth will

have a call night, where they can phone home and they

will also have home visits at certain times of the year,

like the major holidays. Electronics are restricted ini-

tially on campus. Each program has their own guide-

lines for cell phones. Family communication and sup-

port is crucial to the progress of the youth and to help

maintain their progress after discharging. The family

must be willing to work with the program prior to admis-

sion. The youth is entered into the program by their le-

gal guardian. If the parents have joint custody, both

parents must agree to the placement as signatures will

be required for paperwork and treatment plans. The

therapist and unit directors will also be in touch monthly

while the child is in program.

TERRIER RECYCLING TEAM

Wooohooo! The Terrier Recycling Team has branched out and was featured on Launchpad at the myvolusi-aschools.org website. Students recycled for the school and the camera and showed their citizenship for all to see. We are so proud of the 40+ volunteers this school year who decided to be part of the solution.

Did you know that landfills in the Volusia County area are getting so full that they are required to recy-cle? The next time you see something on the ground pick it up & put it in the proper receptacle. Don't be part of the problem, be a part of the solution. As Ms. Smiley says, "save the polar bears". Even better, care about your school, your community, and do the right thing as we say here at D.M.S. A special thanks goes out to Ruthie Hassell, Jay Colon, Tristan Hudec, and Brittany DeLong for making the extra effort on April 11th!

Terriers Rock & Recycle!

Ms. Parker’s Modified Science class 6-8th grade has adopted a Green Sea Turtle patient from the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Fl. Her name is “Eliza” and she weighs 6.35 lbs. Eliza was found washed ashore in St. Lucie, FL suffering from injuries to the neck, shoulder ,and plastron as a result of a shark bite. We will be monitoring her pro-gress as she is being treated and when she is well enough she will be released back into the ocean. We will continue to follow her by tracking her movements using a GPS satellite tag. You can see Eliza’s picture, track a turtle, watch the Sea Turtle Cam, adopt a sea turtle and more at the Center’s website: www.marinelife.org/.
