Extender and Blending Medium is used to extend the open time of the paint. Extender is applied to the dry surface using a large clean brush. Apply a thin application amount to an area or the entire surface, brush back and forth to activate the Extender. When using extender dress brush into extender instead of water.

Squeeze paints onto a wet paper towel or wet palette container with a moistened paper towel to keep paint moist as you paint. Occasionally mist paints with water to keep them moist. Colors are brush-mixed to create a variety of color. Whichever color is listed first is the first color to put on brush. Use mini mop to soften blending as needed. Stage 1 - Background1. Sand canvas well and wipe clean. 2. Use large 1” brush to apply an even application of Extender and Blending Medium to canvas, and then while moist paint an even application of Titanium White to surface. Without rinsing brush pick up a little Ultramarine Blue and blend on palette paper. Add light blue mix to wet Titanium White background blending and creating a mottled appearance. Dry well with hair dryer. 3. Trace pattern onto tracing paper and transfer to surface using gray graphite paper. Do not transfer hummingbird at this time.

Stage 2 - Basecoating4. Basecoat flowers and leaves using a no.8 or 10 filbert brush moistened in water and thin applications of paint. For flowers set brush on petal edges pulling towards center of flower. Light pink flowers are Titanium White + Naphthol Red Light, darker flowers and two buds are Naphthol Red + touch Titanium White. 5. Vary the leaf values and colors with light cool leaves in the background and warm leaves in foreground. Brush-mix Hansa Yellow Medium + Ultramarine Blue, vary the amount of blue and yellow for variety of warm and cool. 6. Dry well with hair dryer.

Stage 3 – Shade and Highlight7. Apply a thin even application of Extender and Blending Medium to surface. 8. Add dark to center of flower petals, for light pink flowers brush mix Titanium White + Naphthol Red Light (this should be darker than base color) start at center of flower and pull half way out towards tip using shape following strokes (follow petal shape). While petals are still moist, pick up more Titanium White to add lighter areas from outer edges inward and where petals overlap. Darker flowers are Naphthol Red + touch Titanium White, this color should appear more red. Again lighten petals on edges/overlapping with slighter lighter value. Use mini mop to soften blending. 9. Add dark value to leaves with 8 filbert, brush-mix Ultramarine Blue + Yellow Oxide for warmer leaves and then add more Ultramarine Blue or Aquamarine for cooler leaves. Begin at base of leaf (wider area) and stroke across back of leaf and pull down center vein area. Add light warm areas to warm leaves with a thinned application of Hansa Yellow Medium, use mini mop to soften blending. 10. Dry well with hair dryer. 11. Apply a thinned/water application of Glazing Medium to entire surface to protect the layers.

Stage 4 12. Transfer hummingbird to surface. 13. Moisten surface with a thin even application of Extender and Blending Medium.14. Use #8 filbert with Titanium White to add light value to center of three flowers. Begin at the center of flower and then pull out just a little; this may need to be done twice to get it light enough. 15. Continue to lighten previous light areas of petals adding more white to base mix. 16. Add dark areas on outer leaf petals use filbert brush and start on outer edges pulling toward middle. For lighter flowers use Naphthol Red Light + tiny touch Ultramarine Blue, for darker flower use Naphthol Red + Ultramarine Blue. This step may also need to be done twice. 17. Lighten leaf edges with #8 filbert, warm leaves use Hansa Yellow Medium + Ultramarine Blue + Warm White. Begin on edges pull towards middle of leaf in a slight curve shape, streaks are good and will look like vein lines. For cool leaves add more Ultramarine Blue + Titanium White, could pick up touches of Aquamarine also. 18. Further shade leaves with a darker value of Ultramarine Blue + Yellow Oxide, more blue on cool leaves, more yellow on warm leaves. 19. Dry well with hair dryer, and then transfer three stems.20. Basecoat stems with basic warm green; Hansa Yellow Medium + Ultramarine Blue. Flower buds are pink Naphthol Red Light + Titanium White.21. Basecoat hummingbird with thin applications of paint + water. Begin at top of head with Ultramarine Blue, chest is Aquamarine, lower tail feathers are Aquamarine Blue + Ultramarine Blue, and upper feathers are Ultramarine Blue + touch of Naphthol Red. Beak is a mix of Ultramarine Blue + Naphthol Red + Yellow Oxide (redish brown color).

22. Dry well with hair dryer, and then apply a water thinned application of Glazing Medium if you want to protect that layer.

Stage 523. Moisten surface with thin application of Extender and Blending Medium. 24. Add more light to the center of roses, and light areas on petal edges. 25. Mix Titanium White + Ultramarine Blue (light blue) add to rose petals as indicated on photo. 26. Use the liner brush to develop flower centers. Brush mix Yellow Oxide + Burnt Umber pull uneven lines from center. Dab more Burnt Umber center. Build lighter values by dabbing Yellow Oxide + Hansa Yellow Medium, and then add Titanium White for lightest area. 27. Use #6 filbert to add blue tints to cool side of leaves (left side of warm leaves). Start on outer edge of leaf and pull towards center vein. Add more light on light side if needed in same manner using Titanium White + Hansa Yellow Medium, including buds. 28. With #4 flat lighten right side of stems with lighter green, darken left side of stems with darker green. 29. Re-moisten hummingbird with Extender and Blending Medium. Use #3 round brush dressed into Ultramarine Blue, dab onto head, while still moist pick up Titanium White and dab into wet paint creating a highlight (this should appear textured). Rinse brush and pick up Ultramarine Blue + Carbon Black dab at back of head and between wings. Repeat this on lower right body/back (under wings) using Ultramarine Blue, and then add a little Carbon Black + Ultramarine Blue to darken right side. 30. Rinse brush and dress into Aquamarine, dab on chest, then pick up Hansa Yellow Medium + tiny bit Titanium White dab on left of side of chest for highlight. Rinse brush

and brush mix Titanium White + Naphthol Red (pink) dab on front left side of chest blending between both colors with dabbing motion. Use #0 mini mop and tap to soften between colors. More details will be added in next stage. 31. Define wings. Upper wing, use either #4 flat or #6 filbert, brush-mix Ultramarine Blue + tiny amount of Carbon Black pull from left side out into wings. Brush-mix Ultramarine Blue + Naphthol Red (red violet color) sideload into small amount of Warm White lighten lower edge of wing to define shape. 32. Middle wing, Use #4 flat brush mixed into Ultramarine Blue + Naphthol Red + tiny bit of Carbon Black, with the chisel edge define wings along lower edge. This wing is the underneath side, and the upper wing is the top area the lights and darks will be on different sides. Rinse brush and with chisel edge pull Aquamarine from body out into each feather. 33. Tail feathers, with #4 flat brush-mix into Ultramarine Blue + Carbon Black, pull from body to middle area. Brush-mix Naphthol Red + Ultramarine Blue pull upward from bottom on four left feathers, and Aquamarine + Ultramarine Blue pull up from bottom to middle on remaining feathers. You should still see some of the Aquamarine if not add more in the center area. 34. Dry well with hair dryer.
