I loved this resin piece from the Artists Club… but I didn’t want

to paint the traditional red robed Santa.. So I chose a slightly unusual

color palette, and a very diff erent theme. Christmas in Tuscany! I hope

you enjoy painting him. He was such fun and the result is what

I feel is a very pretty and elegant looking Santa!

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSThe Face and BeardBase the face with Cotton Candy. Two coats will suf-fi ce. Base the eyes with Warm White and add a dot of Bahama Blue for the iris. Base the beard, moustache and eyebrows with Slate Grey.

Thin a small amount of Tuscan Red and apply a light dry brush to the cheeks and lips. When dry, shade the face with thinned Asphaltum, allowing it to settle into the details of the face (refer to the photo). Add a small dot of Prussian Blue for the pupil and then high-light with a tiny dot of Warm White.

Shade the beard under the moustache, along the edge of the face and the trim of the hat with a fl oat of Prussian Blue. Dry brush the beard with Warm White to enhance the textures and create a frosted look.

The Robe, Hat and Fur TrimBase the robe and hat with two coats of Prussian Blue. The trim (collar and cuff s too) is based with An-tique White. Base the mitts with Bahama Blue.

Starting at the bottom of the robe above the fur trim apply Bahama Blue working up and blending it until the color runs out (kind of a dry brushes look), until about half way up the robe. It should be fully opaque at the bottom and fade out at the top (I use my fi ngers a lot for this). Let it dry well. Add a shadow to the bottom above the trim with a fl oat of thinned Asphaltum.

Apply a wash of heavily thinned Asphaltum over all of the fur trim. letting the color settle into the crevices. Allow it to dry well. Dry brush the fur trim with Warm White to create a frosted look.

Shade over the Prussian Blue along the trims, belt, and under the bag and start with fl oats of thinned Lamp Black. Shade the mitts along the cuff s with a fl oat of thinned Prussian Blue.

The Tuscan LandscapeBase the hills and trees with one coat of Antique Green; the houses with Warm White and roofs with Tuscan Red. Use a small round brush to stipple in the high-lights of the trees with Olive Green. Add a shadow on the opposite side of the trees in the same manner, with thinned Plantation Pine. Shade the valleys between the hills and the lines for the vineyard with fl oats of thinned Asphaltum. Shade the roof, the walls and houses with fl oats of this as well.

Add highlights of Warm White to create a little snow here and there throughout the landscape. Highlight the front and roof of the house.

The TreeBase the boughs with Antique Green. Base the snow with Warm White. Base the star with Cadmium Yellow. Shade one side of the star with a thin fl oat of Tuscan Red (it will look orange). Let it dry. Shade under the boughs on the snow with a fl oat of thinned Prussian Blue. Shade the boughs of the tree under the snow, with fl oats of Plantation Pine. Let the color sink into the texture of the tree. Dry brush the top of the star, and the boughs of the tree with Warm White, to create a frosted look.

The Boots, Belt and BagBase coat all with two coats of Raw Sienna. Base the Buckle with the 24kt Gold.

Shade the edges of the belt and the bag/strap with fl oats of thinned Asphaltum, let the color sink into the textures (stitches). Note that this is not a perfect fl oat but an irregular wash of color. Shade under the Robe at the top of the boots with a fl oat of thinned Asphaltum. Dry brush the toe of each boot with Warm White.

The BaseBase coat with two coats of Warm White.

Shade around the soles of the boots with fl oats of thinned Prussian Blue. Let dry.

FINISHING UPTo Add the fi nal details, spatter the entire Santa with heavily thinned Warm White. Just enough to create the look of a light snow fall.

Once completely dry, apply two light coats of the Ultra Matt Varnish.
