Merry Christmas! Although the weather is just starting to turn cold, it’s time to start thinking about the holidays. To get them started, I hope to see you all at our annual Wigilia (Christmas Eve) dinner. Christmas is an important holiday for Poles, with so many beautiful traditions to cele- brate with family and friends. The Wigilia dinner includes a number of traditions, including the oplatek wafer that we share at the beginning of dinner, the meatless courses, and often ending with Polish Christmas carols. Of course, these traditions differ from region to region. The number of courses and the content of the courses will vary based on location. For example, some areas serve mushroom soup, others red beet soup, and still others the sour soup called żurek. Some areas will serve an odd number of courses, while others serve 12, as we strive to do for our Club Wigilia. In Poland, fish is always part of the meal, and that fish is carp. People often buy them live from vendors, and put them in their bath- tubs to swim until preparation time. In the US, we substitute cod for the fish. CLUB EVENTS & MEMBER NEWS

SUNSHINE CORNER! Słoneczny Kącik

You are welcome to share your news, stories, celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries by calling Basia Pulz (608) 767-2921 or Jane Dunn 831-8827 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Sto lat! 12/15 Jane Pachura Dunn & Jean Pachura Wroblewski

Best wishes to Genevieve “Jean” Czyscon for continued good recovery from her Nov 3 surgery. Her daughter, Janice, a PHCWI Board of Director, reports Jean is doing well back at her Oakwood West home.

For many years now we have supplied volunteers at WI Public TV Channel 21’s Fundraisers. This year Jane Dunn (thank you for organizing), Marge Morgan, Mary Schumacher & Rose Meinholz enjoyed Sun. Nov 28 together, and our club was thanked on the air.

PHC BOOK GROUP Nov 11 Dziękuję to Kasia and Marian Krzyzostaniak for hosting the discussion of Water for Elephants. We enjoyed the book, talked about circuses in Poland (and many other topics), and learned about Poland’s Nov. 11 Independence Day celebrations in their home town of Poznan. It is also Saint Marcin's Day - during the red and white parade, St. Martin, as a Roman legion riding a white horse, is accompanied by jugglers, clowns, stilt-walkers and craftspeople. As St. Martin shared his possessions and goods, (he gave half of his cloak to a beggar), one of the many charity collections this year was for Bone Marrow Transplants. Croissants rogale świętomarcińskie, are Poznan’s local delicacy.

The crescent-shaped sweet-rolls with poppy seed-almond filling have a protected geo-graphic status. Perhaps on 11/11/11 we will taste homemade croissants!

Feb 8th you are welcome to join the discussion of : A Long Long Time Ago and Essentially True by Brigid Pasulka. Before the war, he built a house for his love in the village. In the 1990s, their granddaughter comes to Kraków and uncovers family secrets. The book came out in paper-back earlier this year. Madison Public Library has 5 copies. BRIGID PASULKA, the descendant of Polish immigrants, first

arrived in Kraków in the early nineties, with no contacts, no

knowledge of the language, and only a vague idea of Polish

culture. She quickly fell in love with the place, learned Polish,

and decided to live there for one year. She currently teaches

English at a magnet high school in her native Chicago, and is

still a frequent visitor to Kraków. An award-winning short story

writer, this is her first novel.

ANNUAL POLISH CHRISTMAS BAZAAR November 6, 2010 By Marie Revolinski

Our 4th Bazaar was again held at the West Side Club with food by Queen Anne’s Catering. Financially we came close to doubling last year’s income! Jackie Fatupaito (volunteer processor) efficiently handled our new Merchant credit/debit card machine that provided convenience for shoppers.

Musicians, Tom Wosikowski and Pat Stone, created the mood. Four talented artists demonstrated Polish crafts:

Andrea Rolich – wycinanki (art of

paper-cutting),

Emma Czarapata

and Basia Pulz –

wianki (art of

head wreaths),

Photos by: Don Wesolowski, Emma Czarapata and Rose Meinholz

Pat Hall – jezyki (making of

hedgehog).

A total of 47 exceptional volunteers participated in the success of this event – for a small club – this is admirable. The attendance was absolutely great! The large number of volunteers and the larger number of attendees were indicative of the great pride and affection we all share in our heritage. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO

Four years ago I proposed the idea of a Polish Christmas Bazaar on the west side of Madison to balance the Spring Festival on the east side of the city (held annually on Palm Sunday), and at that time I was appointed Chairperson for the first Bazaar in 2007. One year later, Barbara Lomperski joined me as co-chair. She is a

dedicated, perfect individual for any leadership position and a delight with whom to work.

Marie & Barbara

Our committee this year consisted of Janice Czyscon,

Marcia Flannery, Mary Brzezinski Fayyaz and of course our expert in ethnography, Andrea Rolich – all multi-talented individuals. Our monthly meetings were held in August, September, and October, with many emails and phone calls in-between. This has been an enjoyable, learning process for all of us; however, this was my last year as chair of the bazaar committee. It is time for new ideas and leaders to emerge.

GDANSK AREA DENTAL CLINICS

Kiwanis

Downtown Madison Serving the Children of the World

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. - defining statement Oct.2004

Madison’s Downtown Kiwanis Club supported a Dental

Clinics project sponsored by the Gdansk Kiwanis.

Our club made a donation, and publicized the need in

our newsletter and at events. Kiwanis and PHCWI

member Patricia Brinkman sent this report:

I never dreamed it would take so long for a dream to come true – a dental clinic in a Polish village school. The obstacles were: *new USA requirements after 9/11 for transferring money out of the country, *a weaker USA dollar, *loss of the equipment contract, due to time lag and dollar devaluation, *increased Polish Government standards for a dental clinic: a four-room suite – restroom, waiting room, treatment room and sterilization room, *silence – no communication with my Polish contacts. By March of 2009, I was thinking all is lost. I will somehow have to find a way to repay all the donors their money, over $10,000. But when I returned to Gdansk in April, the Gdansk Kiwanians had all the money ready for me to take back to the USA - to help my people. They had read and heard how the people in our country were homeless, jobless and hungry. “They could not accept the money.” Needless to say, I convinced them it was ok to keep the money and move ahead with the plans to establish a dental clinic in a school. Within a year, they built the rooms, located, bought and transported used equipment from Warsaw, passed government inspections and signed over the clinic to the school.

Today, on the clinic door, there is a plaque letting all who enter know that two Kiwanis clubs, miles apart, worked together to present this gift to the school, students and community. 21 donors from the USA (half were Kiwanians and the other half were friends and

relatives) who believed in the project plus numerous resourceful Kiwanians in Poland, were determined and kept working to make this difference in the health of these students. What a great gift from one people to another. Our blessings were “passed forward” to be a blessing to others. Blessed to be a Blessing. Thank you to all who helped with this gift. Polish Film Festival 20th Anniversary

Thank you to Sebastian Jankowski and all who worked

on the Film Festival. Sebastian sent this letter: Dear Friends of Polish Cinema, On behalf of the Polish Student Association, sponsors, and UW Slavic Department, I would like to thank you for participating in the 20th Annual Polish Film Festival. Fantastic movies, fantastic viewers, fantastic sponsors, fantastic organizers! The event was a tremendous suc-cess - it attracted huge crowds and the Madison commu-nity was able to see the best Polish movies of 2009/2010.

This success was possible thanks to the students from the Polish Students Association who did a fantastic job. Many hours were spent choosing movies, communicaca-ting with the organizers of the Polish Film Festival in Chicago, planning logistics, advertising,& fund-raising. We have already started planning for the 21st Annual Polish Film Festival. Hopefully, next year’s screening will be in a larger theater. If you want to help us, please support our efforts with a donation. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Please make your check payable to POLISH STUDENT ASSOCIATION and send it to: Ewa Miernowska Department of Slavic Languages 1432 Van Vise Hall 1220 Linden Drive Madison, WI 53705 I invite you to next year’s festival, and again, many thanks for the increased support and your presence with us year after year and for this 20th anniversary! Composers on Polish Tradition CD : Adam Wronski, Bronislaw Przybylski, Frederic Chopin, Emil Mlynarski, Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki, Grazyna Bacewicz, Henryk Wieniawski, Jozef Elsner, Juliusz Zarebski, Lady Dean Paul, Ignace Jan Paderewski, Karol Szymanowski Thank you to Tyrone Greive for these program notes from his Faculty Concert celebrating the 2010 birthdate anniversaries of : Chopin – 200 years, Wieniawski –175 years, Paderewski – 150 years, as well as how their music blends with other music on concert programs. (Giuseppe Tartini: Piccole Sonate No. 14 in G Major for Violin and Cello and Vincent Persichetti: Sonata for Solo Violin, op. 10) Three Violin-Piano Arrangements of Piano Music by Frédéric Chopin The three selections on this section of the recital program constitute only a small sample of the many violin-piano versions of Chopin’s music made by numerous, often famous 19th and 20th century violinists. Among the qualities that have made this music attractive to violinist-arrangers are the frequently long melodic lines, imaginative harmonies and turns of the phrase and a combination of classical elegance & romantic elements. Retaining the original structure and key of E Flat Major, the Heifetz version of Chopin’s Nocturne, op. 55 of 1843 divides the original right hand line between the violin and piano, at times creating a true duet. Kreisler’s arrangement of the Mazurka, op. 33 no. 2 from1837-8 is transposed from the original D Major to A Major and adds a short introduction and ending a well as abbreviates the return of the of initial “A” section. In Sarasate’s almost literal transcription of the Nocturne, op. 27, no. 2 composed in 1836 is transposed from D Flat Major to D Major; the violin plays the original right hand piano part, but some its filigree passagework is adapted in a more violinistic manner that also reflects its arranger. Henryk Wieniawski: Légende [Legenda], op. 7 Today, Henryk Wieniawski, along with Paganini and Sarasate, is among the most frequently performed of the

19th-century virtuoso violinist-composers. Among Wieniawski’s most popular works, the Légende, written in 1859, published in 1860 and dedicated to his wife Isabel Hampton, is said to have been written as part of the violinist’s efforts in successfully convincing Isabel’s father of his worthiness as a future husband. A miniature tone poem, the outer sections of Légende have an ominous, at times, mysterious quality with which the glowing sunshine character of the middle section strongly contrasts. Ignacy Jan Paderewski: Sonata in A-minor, op. 13 Widely known as simply “Paderewski”, this composer enjoyed an international fame easily comparable to any recent rock star within his roles as a performing pianist of the late 19th and early 20th-century as well as a well-known politician (i.e. Poland's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs after WWI). A composer of a number of compositions that continue to be of interest today, Paderewski wrote his early violin-piano Sonata in A-minor, op. 13 in the early 1880s. Published in Berlin in 1886 and its writing paralleling the refined performing manner of both its composer and dedicatee, Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, this sonata emphasizes the poised, charming, elegant, and graceful. It is classical in its almost textbook adherence to traditional form and romantic in its singing melodic style, lush harmonies and, paralleling the composer's own piano performance style, its use of tempo rubato, especially in the second movement. It also reflects strong influences of Chopin. Paderewski's rather soloistic treatment of both instruments within a straightforward texture resulted in Brahms supposedly remarking after a 1885 performance in Vienna "Well, Paderewski, it is very effective, very free, but is not chamber music; it is a concert sonata." The sonata combines Polish characteristics and a late 19th-century Germanic style. Nov 5-21 Chicago 22nd Polish Film Festival in America
