Color forecasts for 2015 look a little like the palettes of impression-ist painters Monet, Renoir or Van Gogh.

Most paint companies have released their color of the year collections. They usually choose four themes to refl ect the trends

and then pull one standout color as the star. Pantone, which chooses colorways for products beyond paint, has called its 2015 fashion color report “En Plein Air,” refer-ring to outdoor painting with a range of “understated brights, pale pastels and tropical landscapes.”

The Sherwin-Williams palettes cross the spectrum from the muted, colorful neutrals of the Chrysalis palette to the bold, carnival shades of Unrestrained. The company’s color of the year is Coral Reef (SW 6606), a shade that Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing, says “has a great fl oral compo-nent in it. It’s not too red, not too orange, right in the middle and just creates a buoyant mood.”

The company’s press materials show splashy peonies, painted shabby chic furniture and a modern backdrop for lime green art.

“Possibilities Trends” is the theme behind the four new palettes at PPG Paints and Architectural Coatings. The company’s color experts chose Blue Paisley (PPG-1238-6), a crisp, saturated blue, as its color of the year.

“We have had a really great response to the shade,” said Dee Schlotter, PPG color brand manager. “It is very optimistic and points to a new horizon. It is a serious, mature and positive blue, not like the baby blues of the past.”

Blue Paisley is part of the Co-leidoscope palette, based on world trends and travels. It coordinates with Mother of Pearl, Bone White and a fun yellow called Curry Sauce.

The Good Life palette from PPG pulls from the harmony of the coastal regions. Fresh fl owers and earthy browns hint of the sea in shades such as Oatmeal, Burnt Red, Holland Tile and Malibu Done. They work

Keep chill hours in mind when selecting peach tree variety Q: My peach tree is in full

bloom, and there is a lot of winter left. Will these fl owers make it through the cold?

A: Peach trees bloom

following a dormancy period and an accumula-tion of chill hours. Chill hours are hours below 45

degrees. Most of the peach varieties recommended for North Central Florida have chill hour requirements between 300 and 500 hours.

If your peach tree has a lower chill hour requirement, it accumulated the chill hours for the year, and after a few weeks of warm temperatures, it was ready to break bud or fl ower. In the Gainesville area, our average chill hours per year are 400 to 500 hours. When you are selecting peach varieties, it is important to keep this in mind. Peach varieties, such as Gulf-prince (400), Gulfcrest (350), UF 2000 (300), Flordacrest (350) and Flordaking (450) have chill hour requirements that are appropriate for North Central Florida and are recommended for backyard growers. Seek out these types of peaches from your local nursery.

Q: This vase belonged to my grandmother who

came from Galway, Ireland. It was made by the Irish Belleek Compa-ny, and is in excellent condition with no cracks. It seems to be very rare, as

I have scoured the Internet and cannot fi nd anything to compare with it. It is so elegant and simple.

It has one handle heavily

covered in gold, and around the top inch of the vase. The rest is white with a delicate painting of morning glory fl owers and vines. It bows out at the top, cinching in gracefully, anad fl uting out at the base, six-sided around. The widest part of the vase, alone, is around 6 inches in diameter, not counting the large gold handle.

It has the “CAC” mark along with another mark that is dark red and looks oriental. It may be the letters “EM” with a pagoda-looking symbol underneath. From what I found, it dates from the 1894 to 1906 period.

Do you have a way to fi nd out what artist signed this piece? Do you have an idea of what it is worth, or where I could fi nd out about that? My mother told me it was worth “a lot,” but I never thought about how much before. Now I am downsizing and selling off some pieces.

A: You have a beautiful porcelain hand-paint-

ed pitcher. The overall style is Art Nouveau, a

French design movement that became popular throughout Europe, England and America in the late 19th to early 20th century. The vase was not made by the famous Irish Belleek Porcelain Com-pany located in Ferman-agh, Ireland. Irish Belleek porcelain was very expensive and of a high standard of quality. Porcelain manufacturers in America, recognizing the fame of the company name, started using the word “Belleek” in their backstamps.

The backstamp on your vase with the letter “L” in a circle and the small image of an artist’s palette and the word “Belleek” beneath was made by the Lenox Company. The Ceramic Art Company started business in 1889 in Trenton, New Jersey, and became the Lenox China Company in 1906, which continues into current times. The artist’s palette mark was used by Lenox from 1906 to 1924.

Due to the use of the word “Belleek” by Lenox and other American porcelain companies, the Irish Belleek Company sued them to stop using the word, and won. Shortly after, Lenox started using “made in

USA” in their mark. So your beautiful vase was made in the early 20th century.

The quantity of decora-tive porcelains made by various American china companies using the word “Belleek” in the early 20th century was huge. So much so that it has became a collecting category called American Belleek, most of which does not look anything like Irish Belleek. In my library, I have a book titled, “Collecting Ameri-can Belleek.” I think your Lenox American Belleek pitcher would sell in the $200 range, perhaps more on a lucky day.

Of course, there has to be somewhere for the eye to rest in this color bouquet. The Paint Quality Institute is naming gray as the winner over white for the second year in a row.

“This is the fi rst time any color has headlined our forecast in back-to-back years,” says color expert Debbie Zimmer. “But gray, a near-perfect neutral

color, has really caught on.”

Benjamin Moore never disappoints with its color of the year. This year, it’s Guilford Green (HC-116), a stunning silvery green that changes with the light. Reminiscent of the perennial plant known as lamb’s ear, it pairs well with just about everything and adds freshness. Press materials show it on the ceiling with walls painted in Universal Black to great effect. The Benjamin Moore palette also in-cludes Caponata (AF-650) and Portland Gray (2109-60) as dark anchors.

Dutch Boy paints has unleashed a much darker side of blue in Coal Blue (E16-1). Reminiscent of Pennsylvania blue slate, it

becomes a neutral back-drop when paired with light tans, pale blues and even mustard yellow. Other shades in the collection include Faintest Idea (F-25-4), a pale lavender that pairs well with varying shades of blue from turquoise to pale blue; and Biloxi Blues (E-17-2), a cornfl ower blue that is friendly with Loden Woo, a basil pesto green, and Ashton Orange.

Behr’s collection focuses on saturated colors paired with neutrals, including Essential Teal (T15-3) from the Deep Dreams palette. They’ve also released a Frosted Pastels palette of Dreamscape Gray, Secret Blush, Elusive Blue and Dandelion Tea. Pop art takes center stage in the Social Brights collection, while Nuanced Neutrals wash ashore in Blue Clay, Mocha Foam and Snap Pea Green.

Last but not least is premium paint Farrow & Ball. The British company known for amazing front door paint has released four key colors for 2015 — Breakfast Room Green, Light Blue, Pink Ground and Tanner’s Brown. Neutral and saturated, they evoke a spring bouquet in the softest sense.

The trick to using all of these shades is getting to the undertones in them. Every shade has a warm, cool or neutral undertone, and it is wise to consult with the color cards each company provides to fi nd its complement. This is especially important when painting a kitchen, where cabinetry can throw off color.

Whatever direction you choose, don’t be afraid to stroke on some color. It’s almost as much fun as picking spring fl owers.

low as 18 degrees, though. Fully opened fl owers can withstand temperatures in the high 20s with a slight percent-age loss of fruit. Severe temperatures (low 20s for several hours) usually destroy the entire buds, fl owers and seeds in the fruit, which causes the small fruits to drop off. Commercial growers often ice over their orchards to protect the fl owers. In a backyard situation, it is better to cover the tree with a high-quality frost cloth and place incandescent light bulbs in the canopy, or string old-fashioned Christmas tree lights (the large bulbs that get warm when they are lit) in the tree. Q: My family’s home has some tangerine trees

that were planted back in the ’70s. We’ve never pruned them, and while I’ve heard they don’t need pruning, some of the branches are overbur-dened with fruit. They seem likely to break.

A: We are in the middle of citrus-picking

season in North Central Florida. Backyard oranges, tangerines, lemons and grapefruit are having a banner year, thanks to last year’s mild winter and good summer rains.

Generally, citrus only need to be pruned to keep the tree to a size that makes picking safe and

easy. Also, having a tree that is under 15 to 20 feet makes maintenance activities easier. Some citrus, like tangerines, go into a biennial bearing cycle, meaning they have a bumper crop one year and a very light crop the next. Thinning young fruit during the heavy years can help to moder-ate the crops, but for gardeners, thinning is the hardest thing to do; we hate to see the fruits of labors hit the ground. My advice for you is to lighten the load as soon as you can because the branches can break

under the weight of a crop.

Then in March, after the danger of frost, prune the upper branches down by one-third. The tree may be in fl ower when you are pruning, so you will be sacrifi cing some fruit from next year’s crop. It will be worth it to have a tree with strong branches that is easier to pick.

with yet another mega-sale. Swedish video game billionaire Markus Pers-son bought a Beverly Hills mansion for $70 million.

Q: I would like to add a hand shower to my

shower stall. I have seen many different makes and models and my question is simple because it’s about simplicity. From what you have seen, is there an uncomplicated way to just add a personal hand shower unit to a shower stall without making it a big deal? I’m looking to avoid a complicated project.

A: A hand shower or personal shower can

be a nice addition to any shower stall. Having a hand shower on a fl exible hose can make bathing easier, especially for

users with special needs.

Like anything else, you can get very fancy with custom brackets that need to

be drilled into the shower walls or diverter valves for fl ow control to mul-tiple shower heads. Or, you can just take a simple approach and install a shower cradle on the end of your shower arm pipe.

As long as your shower arm is in good shape, you can usually replace your existing showerhead with the hand shower cradle kit. Make sure you follow

your kit and/or compo-nent piece instructions. Cradle kits can include a fl exible hose and a hand shower that connects to the cradle.
