A pioneer Sun Citian was
once
heard to say, This
is our
place
in the sun.
Wi t h
these words, he may
have
added
the fo l l owing
br ief
story about an infant com
munity
that has already grown up.
This is our
place
in the sun — a land that, four
years ago, was called cotton fields. Now, this is our
home and we
call
it Sun
C i ty
Our community has a 100-unit motor hotel, a
t h r iv -
ing 28-business shopping center, palm dotted parkways,
two
ro l l ing 18-hole
golf
courses, recreational facilities
and
thousands
of
homes
and
apartments.
A l l
of this has
been
accomplished in an eye
wink
of
time, but has become an eye fu l l in reality.
Only recently we celebrated our Fourth Birthday and
Model Homes Grand Opening. This Sun

its pictorial coverage to the two day festivities we
shared,
and
reveals
some new developments in 1963.
Our motor hotel was newly
decorated,
enlarged and
renamed Kings Inn. Construction of
homes
continued
at a rapid pace and the Shepherd of the Desert
L u t h -
eran
Church became our community's t h i r d to complete
its
sanctuary.
Known
as active retirees, we continued to keep
our image intact while busily pursuing activity
in
more
than 90 clubs and organizations.
Our major programs included fashion shows, a luau.
Western Days, arts and crafts
shows
and a Roaring
20's
dance.
Yes, this is our
place
in the sun,
ever
growing,
ever
glowing, where during 1963, we welcomed new friends
and neighbors practically every day to
jo in
in our varied
activities in a climate of fine friendship and Arizona
sunshine.
A nd
together in 1964, we are happy to
say Sun
ity
is our
place
in the sun.
