OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

The celebration of the Nativity is centered on joy and peace, results of the gift of Love. And love is a gift, freely given, which uplifts spirits and breathes life into even the weariest and poorest. The readings bear this out. They reflect the source as John’s Gospel proclaims: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word is God and the Word became Flesh.” We live our faith sincerely, generously when we embrace this truth and its message to us. Every person hungers for meaning, purpose and fulfillment, our highest aspirations to a full life. History shows how many different ways people have expressed this. In a world of insane violence, in a dysfunctional society bent out of shape by poor choices in achieving this goal, the call of love is drowned out for many because one-dimensional goals are sought (success, security, control of life through wealth, possessions, power, pleasure, comfort, popularity, fame, status and a disregard for one’s neighbors and beyond). Love no longer is connected to the Good Life and the American Dream. The most durable and endearing escape from these traps is a strong, faithful and loving upbringing in family life. Marriage and family are the foundations of every stable society and offer people the insights into a meaningful life, rooted in relationships wherein one is free and strong in choosing to be for others as well as self, as seeing the presence of God in every person regardless of gender, race, religion, culture, ethnicity, class or social approval. It starts in the home and parents can give no greater gift and blessing to their children than these strong legs to walk through life and strong spirit to fly in the face of life’s surprises, contradictions, follies and absurdities! The richest experience in any and every family is the treasure enjoyed because all members are blessings to each other rather than curses. The readings today celebrate these blessings in a variety of ways. Each and every blessing in life is rooted in love. That’s the heart of this feast day (Holy Family) centered on the life-style of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. What a wonderful way to start the New Year by renewing ourselves as daughters and sons of God in the Holy Family of all peoples! A blessed and peace-filled 2015 to all of you!

to me from the ground."
