Welcome

This autumn/winter NCCD showcases the work of over 40 British artists across eight wonderfully curated exhibitions spanning the breadth of craft and design.

Jerwood Makers Open 2019 continues in our main gallery exhibiting five extra-ordinary new commissions by early-career makers. In February we open a specially curated exhibition Body & Mind: Seen & Unseen, which leads a new stimulating and engaging season of arts and health activities at NCCD and across our local community.

Throughout our smaller gallery spaces we’re delighted to present four group exhibitions that showcase the beautiful works of over 20 designer/makers members of Design-Nation, the UK’s leading portfolio for craft design and product. And we close our roof gallery with a solo exhibition by ceramicist Charlotte Hodes.

As ever, NCCD hosts an inspiring programme of artist led workshops, talks and events for everyone to get involved with, including a NEW Craft Club.

Gifted Contemporary Christmas Market is back in December for its 8th edition. This year our cosy festive market hosts a variety of specially selected craft stalls with live music and entertainment, workshops, demonstrations and a packed programme of creative activities for all the family.

2020 brings an exciting new era for NCCD. In January, refurbishment will start to remodel and refresh the Centre to include new gallery spaces, dance & arts studios, enhanced conference and event facilities, and a larger café bistro and shop. NCCD will remain open throughout the refurbishment. Follow us on social media for regular refurbishment updates and sneak previews.

There’s so much to see and take part in this season — we look forward to welcoming you soon.

5 Oct 2019 – 19 Jan 2020 Main Gallery

This touring exhibition showcases new works and installations in textiles, ceramics, wood and metal, by five contemporary artists. Each artist received a bursary from Jerwood Arts to support experimentation and making. The award and exhibition freely allows makers to develop their creative ideas, constituting a fresh and exciting direction in their work.

The National Centre for Craft & Design is delighted to be the first tour venue for the 2019 edition.

A Jerwood Arts exhibition. Other touring venues include; Jerwood Space, Manchester Art Gallery, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre & Torre Abbey Museum. With support from Art Fund for curatorial development activity on the tour.

Body & Mind: Seen & Unseen 1 Feb – 19 Apr 2020 Main Gallery

Image: Out of the Dirt, Karina Thompson

Image: Synapse, Charlotte Colbert

Body & Mind: Seen & Unseen brings together a group of thought-provoking and engaging works, across a range of media, which all, in different ways, look at what it means to be well.

The exhibition considers both visible health and those less visible aspects of well-being, through works exploring personal experience of health issues and pieces that examine our relationship to our bodies and the treatment of illness.

Body & Mind: Seen & Unseen questions the perception of what it means to be well, whether this is something that can be seen, and how our understanding of this has changed over time.

Remember Me: Charlotte Hodes Papercuts and Ceramics11 Jan – 22 Mar 2020 Roof Gallery & Project Space

Remember Me profiles Charlotte Hodes’ long-standing engagement with the boundaries between fine art and craft practice. Her work draws from both the rich iconography of the decorative arts and her own hand drawn archive of motifs centred on the female figure.

Hodes uses collage in a unique way to challenge accepted hierarchical structures and presents a vision that is led by a female sensibility and poetic imaginings. Her ceramic installations, made up of multiple pieces of ready-made tableware as an alternative ‘canvas’, reference domesticity and the home. The installation Remember Me was commissioned by and first shown in a solo exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, 2017.

Liz Pearson: Sense of Self11 Jan – 22 Mar 2020 Exchange Space

Sense of Self by Liz Pearson focuses on June, who is living with dementia, and the role of participatory design in promoting a ‘sense of self’ after a dementia diagnosis.

The exhibition documents key aspects of June’s life with a collection of objects, photographs and artworks by June. Pearson’s own work in glass, made in response to June’s experiences, also helps to look past the condition and see the person as an individual.

Caroline Matthaei: From Papagena to Lady-Birds21 Sep 2019 – 12 Jan 2020 Window Collection

This stairwell exhibition showcases work by Design-Nation member Caroline Matthaei. Works include plaster figures Women Waiting, porcelain Lady Bird figures along with some simpler automata and Jumping Jennies.

‘Each of my sculptures comes with its own story. Most of the time I can find someone in (the) clay (wood, plaster…), and build the figure from there.’Caroline Matthaei interview with Midori Takaki Ceramics Artisan – Najimu – Japan, November 2013
