Principal’s Message
Although a short month, December has been filled with a number of wonderful
community building activities. A big thank you to the School Advisory Council for
organizing an amazing Community Pot Luck filled with wonderful food and music
from around the world. Flags from around the world were proudly displayed in the
senior cafeteria as a huge number of families came out to enjoy a lovely festive meal
together. There was lots of excitement as well with beautiful thematic Dream Baskets
being raffled off to support enrichment activities for Bowmore students. Well done to
everyone involved!
A special thank you to all our families, staff members and friends that supported our
male staff for the November initiative Movember. A total of $2625.00 was donated to
cancer research under the team name Bowmore 7 Up. The fundraising continued as
the Grade 4 students of Room 24 held a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane
Sandy. With the help of parent volunteers and a donation from Merchants of Green
Coffee, the students served freshly baked goods, hot chocolate and coffee to families
before the start of the school day. The response from the community was so positive
that the students were able to raise $250.00 to give to the Red Cross. Their teacher
Mr. Robert Comendador is incredibly proud of his students’ efforts, ideas and
goodwill to others. The school fundraising efforts were highlighted in our local
Beaches Mirror.
Thank you to everyone that attended our beautiful primary holiday concert. A special
thank you goes to Mr. Butters, who organized the school event and coordinated the
musical performances. The coordinated efforts of all Bowmore staff allowed for our
students to shine and enjoy their moment in the spotlight.
This is the last week of school before the holiday break. We hope that each of you
have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends over the next two weeks.
Our school will be closed from December 22nd
to January 6th
, inclusive. Students are
welcomed back to school on Monday, January 7th
, 2013.
With the wonderful diversity of our school community there have been many
festivals of light taking place for our students and their families to honour their
religion and heritage. Where some religious holidays are now coming to an end, some
are just beginning. On behalf of all our staff at Bowmore Road, Ms. Minos and I
would like to wish those families about to celebrate Christmas, a very Merry
Christmas, and wish everyone a truly wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year filled with peace, love and good health.

Claude Watson School for the Arts
Each year students audition for admission to the school. There are 60
places available in the grade four year. Auditions for vacancies in grades
5-8 will also be held. The audition process for students is a series of
studio experiences in dance, drama, visual arts and music. Auditions are
conducted by a team of adjudicators, both professional artists and
teachers.
The school will be holding two information evenings at the Claude
Watson School for the Arts, 130 Doris Ave. on Tuesday, October 23,
2012 and Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. School parking is
limited so families should leave sufficient time to find street parking.
These meetings are to inform parents of the school's program, to review
the application process and to provide parents with an opportunity to ask
questions. Application forms will be available during the meeting, from
the school website, or at the school as of the second week of October.
They have set a deadline of Friday, December 14, 2012 at 4 p.m. for all
applications to be handed in to Claude Watson School for the Arts, 130
Doris Ave. All necessary paperwork required for applying to the program
can be found on their website.
They would be more than pleased to further acquaint you with the Claude
Watson program or to answer any questions you may have regarding the
audition process. Parents are invited to contact the school at 395-3180
(press #2) if you would like further information.
Bowmore Road P.S. Staff Raise Funds for Movember
When it comes to putting the 'fun' into fundraising the staff at Bowmore Road P.S. are definite role models for their young students. This month eleven of Bowmore's staff members came together to sprout their 'staches for Movember. Although their team was a diverse one made up of teachers, caretakers, educational assistants and lifeguards, their mission was clear to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Like the clear drink they named their team Bowmore 7 Up, believing that good things rise to the top. The team pulled the school community together and raised a total of $2, 625.00.
They celebrated their efforts by crowning their lead 'fun'raiser Head Caretaker Randy Langlois (raised $700.00) with a Mr. Movember top hat and scarf, while enthusiastic runner up Music Teacher Paul Butters (raised $500.00) was given a Movember t-shirt and razor to shave off his moustache first.
The Bowmore School community is thrilled with the staff's efforts to work together to
raise awareness for men's health and to make a difference.
Bowmore’ Students Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser On the morning of November 30, 2012, the Grade 4 students of Room 24 at Bowmore Public School got up early to hold a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. With the help of parent volunteers and a donation from Merchants of Green Coffee, the students served freshly baked goods, hot chocolate and coffee to families before the start of the school day. The response from the community was so positive that the students were able to raise $250.00 to give to the Red Cross and their efforts in New Jersey. Their teacher Mr. Robert Comendador is incredibly proud of his students efforts, ideas and good will to others. Empathy was this month’s character trait and Mr. Comendador feels his students embodied the very essence that defines this word.
FIRST LEGO League Robotics
A big congratulations to the students
in Ms. Gatt's class on the 1-800s
Team. They and their coach Ms. Davis won the Research Award at
the First Lego League Robotics TDSB
Final on December 1st at Runnymede Collegiate. A big
congratulations as well to the students in Ms. Partridge and Mr.
Freeman's classes on Team Tech Royalty. Coached by Mr.
Easterbrook, they won the
Programming Award. Team Tech Royalty also placed third overall
and has secured the opportunity to compete in the First Lego Provincial
Final on January 12, 2013. Both
teams represented Bowmore well and the coaches were thrilled with
the results. A big thank you to the parents that came out to support
the students.
Thanks Parent Council!
New Library TV
by
Graydon Beddington Rm 24
I enjoyed the new TV set-up because
the TV was very visible. The light
wasn’t shining on the TV screen. Also
the TV screen was facing down the
middle so most people had the same
view I had. I also liked it because the
TV was flat screen TV and it’s a great
size for the classroom. The volume
was good enough to hear and the
DVD was very good. But the thing I
like the most about it is that it is very
big. I think this would benefit the
classroom because most of the people
liked the TV better than the projector.
A TV is also a new way to watch
films in the classroom. It also is a new
way to benefit the classroom because
it there is writing on the chalkboard
and you use the projector the writing
will show up when you are watching
the film. When you use the TV that
doesn’t happen, that is why I like the
TV better than the projector.

Camp Wahanowin By Julie Frynta - 76 I had a fantastic time at Wahanowin! It was a wonderful experience because I got to know other students in grade seven, that I didn't know. I had the opportunity to experience some activities that you can't do in your house, or in Toronto. So I enjoyed every single thing at camp. First of all the cabins were awesome because all of the girls in my cabin slept in one room, and before we'd go to sleep we would talk about different subjects... One of the things Ms. Prince told us was that the food was great. She was right! At every meal except breakfast, there was a delicious salad bar... Most of what I enjoyed were the activities. We did High Ropes! They were one of my favourites because I am not afraid of heights and I enjoy obstacles. On the way down off the high ropes, I did the Spiderman! I went upside down putting my feet around the rope! We played some team games, where we had to use our thinking skills and teamwork skills. When I think of Camp Wahanowin, I remember my favourite memory, which is very random but fun to do! Can you guess? It's getting wet from the pouring rain! Not only did we get wet, but we did activities during the pouring rain! It was fun, because in the city we try to stay warm, dry and clean. But on an outdoor trip I enjoyed doing the opposite of what I do in the city sometimes!
Camp was awesome! It was a beautiful experience that I won't forget, and I will take advantage of the experiences as I take a step forward in life. I realized how some people do live like we did in the cold!
Thank you Bowmore Staff for the opportunity.
UNICEF Thank you to all families that participated in UNICEF collections this year. There is still time to make an on line donation, contact unicef.ca/oct31 Library Monitors Thank you to the many students who completed applications for positions of Library Monitor. In November, these students are participating in training sessions during morning recess. At this time, the monitors are assisting in the Library during morning recesses. Thank you to Kyla (Rm 19) and Spencer (Rm 201) for assisting with the training. I really appreciate the leadership opportunity that all of our monitors have chosen. Visit from Gerrard Ashdale Public Librarian Debby Ng, Children's Librarian from Gerrard Ashdale, Toronto Public Library visited Bowmore. She spoke to students in our six JK / SK classes. Ms. Ng reminded the students that the Public Library is a place for everyone. Library cards are free and all Bowmore families are encouraged to visit their local public library. Forest of Reading Books Blue Spruce, Silver Birch and Red Maple books are arriving in the Library now. The primary division will start to use the Blue Spruce books in December. Some Junior/ Senior classes are making plans for the Silver Birch / Red Maple books for the new year. Voting on our favourite Forest of Reading book will be in April 2013. Parent Volunteers A special thank you to the parents who are volunteering in the Library this year. Please contact Ms. Polgrain if you would like to join our team of Parent Volunteers!

Prologue Presentation – Duffle
Bag Performance
In the last week of November,
Dufflebag Theatre came to visit
Bowmore to put on a bilingual
performance of Little Red Riding Hood
(Petit Chaperon Rouge) for the Junior
division. This performance involved a
great deal of audience participation and
response which resulted in many
laughs and high student engagement.
Two students were chosen from the
audience, by the Dufflebag actors, to
perform with them. Mireille played
Little Red Riding Hood and Spencer
played the Woodsman ( le Bucheron).
Both of our students participated with
great aplomb. Spencer with much
gusto and Mireille with character
appropriate charm.
We would like to send a huge thank
you to the School Council for funding
this performance for us. The Junior
students truly enjoyed the performance,
learned a little French, and had a lot of
fun.
On December 13, 2012, a group of Bowmore grade 8 students performed some terrific tunes for the Annual Holiday Family Open House at Gerrard Ashdale Public Library. The seven students played songs in groups and individually. As a full group, this band performed " Eye of the Tiger" and "Thriller". The audience sang, danced and applauded with much holiday cheer. Congratulations to these seven students. Liam, Victoria, Billy Alegra, Emerson, Julia, and Rowan. Many thanks to Ms. Sambrook for transporting the instruments and Ms. Evron for supporting this musical group.
THINK RECYCLE FUNDRAISING PROGRAM Do you have lots of e-waste at home or work? Donate it to us! You will be thrilled to know that right after the winter break, Bowmore Public School, will begin participation in the Think Recycle Fundraising Program. Think Recycle is an environmental fundraising program that educates our students on the importance of recycling electronics while, at the same time, raising much needed funds for important school initiatives. This year we have a goal of raising money towards outdoor classrooms at the school. How can you help? Start collecting unwanted cell phones, laptops, ink/toner cartridges and cameras over the holidays. Every item earns our school money. Even an old broken cell phone is worth $0.50 and some working ones are worth as much as $150.00! Laptops are worth at least $5.00 and many are worth much, much more. So, ask your friends and neighbours; ask at work and at the businesses that you frequent for donations of their e-waste. Most people welcome the opportunity to dispose of these unwanted items in a safe, socially responsible manner. Your doing them a favour! Not only will we raise money for our school we will be planting trees in the process. Think Recycle has teamed up with Tree Canada and American Forests, a tree is planted for every 24 qualifying products donated! In January, school council will do a full launch of this program and you will be able to deposit these items in Think Recycle donation boxes that will be located in the school. Please don't donate the following:

Cancellation of Busses During Severe Weather
Severe weather conditions may require the TDSB to cancel transportation or, in extreme
conditions, close schools. The decision to close schools is made by the director of education. In the event transportation is cancelled or schools are closed, the local
media will be informed before the beginning of the school day. Tune
in to your radio and television news stations for the latest
information or visit www.tdsb.on.ca.
If weather conditions become extreme after students are in school, a decision to close
schools will be made by 11:00am and broadcast by noon. In this case, elementary students will
remain in the school until they are picked up by a parent or parent
designate. If there is no announcement about school closing by noon, schools will
remain open for the day.
Celebrate Winter Solstice on
December 21st
, 2012
People from many different cultures have
held solstice celebrations for thousands
of years. For our distant ancestors,
dependent on hunting, gathering, and
growing, the seasons and the weather
played a central role in their lives.
In the northern hemisphere, passing the
winter solstice meant the return of the
sun, which seemed to be disappearing.
Many religious and cultural traditions
celebrated the re-birth of sunlight after
this dark period.
The solstice is important to Mayan
people, but this year especially holds
special significance. Their calendar is
ending. It is the end of the Long Count –
a 5,125-year period, which began on Aug
11, 3114 B.C. and will end on a winter
solstice.
Flu season is here again. In Canada, flu season tends to run between October and April. The Ontario government is encouraging Ontarians to avoid getting sick this flu season by getting their annual flu shot. Toronto Public Health is recommending that whenever students and staff experience flu-like symptoms, they are sent home and do not return to school until they are no longer infectious to others. Therefore, ill students and staff must be symptom-free (especially from vomiting and diarrhea) for at least 48 hours before returning to school. The primary concern is for the health and safety of all students and staff. Please note that no special measures are required when there is a case of influenza in a school or daycare. However, everyone should do their part to stop the spread of the flu. As parents, you can also assist by: • reminding children to wash their hands often especially after using the washroom and before and after eating; • reminding children to cover their sneeze and cough; • watching for symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and/or high fever; • informing the school if your child is ill; • keeping your child at home when he/she is ill. For more information, please visit the Toronto Public Health website www.toronto.ca/health, contact your family doctor, or Telehealth Ontario. 1-866-797-0000.
Making the Best of Winter Weather at our School Fresh air and exercise are important for children. It keeps them physically fit, and helps them stay alert all through the school day. Parents can help by making sure their children come to school prepared to spend time outdoors. Hats, mitts, boots and a warm jacket are important to keep students comfortable during lunch and recess. But extreme cold can be dangerous, and parents want to know that their children will be safe. When the temperature is predicted to drop below -15C, the City of Toronto may declare a cold weather alert. Schools are very sensitive to the needs of our students and pay close attention to the weather, especially when the windchill is below -20 C. The TDSB Severe Weather Protocol is flexible, so that every principal can make a decision that meets the needs of his or her school. It sets guidelines for when to allow students outside for recess, when to make out-door breaks shorter, and when to keep students inside altogether. Canadian winters can be wonderful but when the weather is cold, school staff keep one eye on the thermometer and the other on the needs of our students – a perfect balance of fun and safety.

First Aid Training
A dozen staff members participated in First Aid
Training on the PA Day – Dec 7th
, 2012 here at Bowmore. We
wanted to update our certification to ensure we are able to
address our student’s health and emergency situations. We
were happy to hear about how to assist students with allergic
reactions, anaphylaxis, cuts, bites, bruises, concussions, etc.
We continue to inform ourselves about diabetes, and
heart conditions to mention a few that affect our students.

Arts Junktion at Bowmore We are so fortunate to have started our own Arts Junktion. It is similar to the Arts Junktion available through the TDSB. Arts Junktion is a depot for receiving and distributing donated materials and supplies. These items are FREE to our staff, daycare and parenting centres. The purpose is to recycle material that can be used to enrich classroom projects, in-school creations, visual arts classes, and to support students in the delivery of curriculum using creativity and innovation. Our staff through parental support, are housing the recycled materials in rm 203. This way we have our own in-house depot for using recycled materials and supporting eco-practices. If you have any materials to donate, please drop them off in Rm 9 with Ms Kalogris or Rm 10 with Ms Varga. Thanks for recycling reusable items.
The Dove Presentations
A couple of weeks ago, The Dove Project visited our classes. They taught us about body image and self-esteem. During their visit, they showed us videos and photos about how different people look in magazines than real life. They showed us this so we would stop comparing ourselves to people on T.V. and in magazines. We learned that boys and girls are equally self-conscious. We learned ways to boost our self-esteem, including ways to ignore put-downs. Lastly, we each had to write something positive about a fellow peer. All in all, it was a great presentation.
