Wheat markets experienced a correction this past week despite strength in the row crops. Bullish sentiment deflated after Russia’s Ag Minister stated that his country would not be restricting grain exports; then another cease-fire was announced between them and Ukraine, further reducing the risk factor in the market. Winter wheat conditions are still in mostly fair to poor shape across much of Russia and eastern Ukraine, but the weather has warmed, removing some of the concern for the moment. Soybeans were higher on continued very strong export demand and USDA’s reduction of US ending stocks for the marketing year. Corn also pushed higher as ethanol production continues at a record pace and from a slight reduction in yield estimates coming out of Argentina, who’ve had a very slow planting pace so far due to persistent rains.

The cattle market continues to correct from all-time highs on disappointing consumer demand as we head into the holiday season. Slower slaughter rates haven’t given the packers any leverage to boost beef prices, as the record high live and dressed weights are making more beef available to the market. Feedlots have quickly gotten behind on their marketings as they’ve preferred to hold cattle and increase the weights – a strategy that worked well for them until the last couple of weeks. Fed cattle numbers are expected to increase in the first quarter of 2015, and the heavy weights will create a surge in beef supplies, something the market hasn’t had to consider for the last few years.

Energy prices continued to buckle as more traders scrambled to exit longs and then establish bearish positions. A number of fundamentals are converging to pressure the energy space. Huge increases in domestic production, OPEC’s decision to not reduce their own supplies, the resurgence of Iraq’s production and the slowing economies of several major countries are all contributing to a wave of bearishness in the energy space. Precious metals managed a recovery after extremely volatile trading the last few weeks, finding support from a stock market that found itself in correction mode and the dollar that is pulling back from recent 5-year highs.

Tea Time Little Johnny was left to fix lunch. When his mother returned with a friend, she noticed that Johnny had already strained the tea. The two women then sipped their tea happily while having lunch. “Was it hard finding the tea strainer in the kitchen?” Johnny’s mother asked. “I couldn’t find it Ma, so I used the fly swatter,” he replied. His mother nearly fainted, so Johnny hastily added: “Don’t get excited, Ma, I used the old one!”

Bill’sFood Corn e r

Dig right in to our newest regular guest column! Bill Hake invites you to test his recipes and his theories and tell us what

you think. And he takes “requests”! ACIDIC VS. ALKALINE

Recently, I have run across several articles about acid-alkaline balance in the body. Sadly, in order to maintain the slightly alkaline balance our body prefers, many of these articles go into overkill and recommend we eat an alkaline based diet of fruits and vegetables, and avoid acidic animal products. “Aren’t some fruits acidic?” I ask. I’m told, “Oh, that’s okay, because there’s no acidic residue after they’re digested.” So, let me tell you a story. A friend of mine who consumed a lot of citrus fruits and juices had occasional very painful kidney stones. Over time, having seen many different doctors, he finally had a doctor tell him to take a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water every morning until the pain was gone. Within a few days the pain subsided,

never to return, simply because of a daily teaspoon of baking soda. On the other side of the coin, though, if you were to drop a gall stone in acidic vinegar it would dissolve. So, here on the one hand we have too much acidity and on the other too much alkalinity. In my estimation, eliminating one food group is not a solution to the problem, it is the problem. If we give our body all of the different nutrients required, it will sort out what it needs to keep the body in balance. Contrarily, if we overload in any given area, that’s when our body systems begin to break down. Repeat after me “variety and moderation”.

You almost never see osmotic pressure mentioned in conjunction with nutrition, but when you consider that all of our nutrition is delivered to our body via Osmosis,

then it follows that it must be broken down to the molecular level for that to happen. Acid and alkali both are absolutely essential to that process. For this issue’s recipe let’s make an alkaline coleslaw with an acidic vinaigrette dressing. You can use just shredded cabbage or you can also add shredded carrots, onions, green peppers or anything you like. (I use a variety of different vegetables.) The dressing recipes will dress a small head of cabbage with a few extra veggies added, or you can double or triple the dressing and keep it in the fridge for use later. ~Bill

Coleslaw Dressing #2

2/3 cup sugar 1 tsp. Yellow mustard 1 Tbsp. whole celery seed 1 tsp. Salt ½ medium onion chopped fine 1 cup corn oil (Corn oil tastes best but any vegetable oil will do.) ½ cup red wine vinegar (Flavored vinegars could work, but they will change the flavor.)

Blend all together, mix with slaw to taste. Make a few hours ahead of time so flavors can blend.

Coleslaw Dressing #11 cup sugar¾ cup red wine vinegar 1 tsp. Hazelnut syrup½ tsp. salt

Blend all four ingredients and add to slaw judiciously until your taste buds are satisfied.

If you haven’t used Hazelnut syrup before you can find it with the coffee flavoring syrups.

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, My brother and I recently received an inheritance after our mom died. He’s never been very good with money, so I was proud of him when he used his portion to pay off his debts. But then he went out and financed a van that I know he still can’t afford. I’m afraid he’s falling right back into the same old money problems, but I don’t know how to talk to him about it. ~DianaDear Diana, I’ve learned, after years of writing books, doing a radio show and trying to educate folks about their finances, you can’t make people listen to you. Even with what I do for a living I don’t throw my opinion around unless someone asks.> I think you’re smart for realizing there are some boundaries here. But there’s no reason you can’t create a situation where he can ask your opinion. You might begin with talking about some of the mistakes you’ve made in the past. This could help him connect with you, and feel more comfortable opening up about his own situation. Once he realizes you haven’t repeated the same mistakes, and have a better life for it, he might just ask how you did it. Then, the door is open!> But you can’t become preachy every time someone does something dumb. That will only hurt their feelings and cause them to tune you out completely. ~Dave

DEAR DAVE, Our daughter wasn’t very responsible with money until she read your books. Now, she has really started turning her life around. Recently, she learned she needs to have some expensive dental work done. Since she just started trying to manage her money well, she doesn’t have enough saved up for the procedure or dental insurance right now. Do you think we should help by loaning her the money? ~DianneDear Dianne, I like what you’ve told me about your daughter. She doesn’t need to worry about dental insurance though. You almost never get back what you put into those policies. It’s the kind of stuff a good emergency fund will cover. If she has invested her time and money into what I teach, I’d say she’s pretty serious about getting her finances in order.> If it were me, I’d make the money for dental work a gift, not a loan, for turning her financial life around. In your description you never mentioned anything about your daughter being lazy or unwilling to work. You talked about a young lady who’s just starting to build her life, and you’re rewarding smart choices. I think that’s a great idea and will have a major positive impact! ~Dave

Thursday morning, my oldest daughter, Meagan, made headlines in Great Falls. As per her pre-dawn, school day routine, all seven children were buckled into their Excursion, so Meagan could deliver the four oldest to school before swapping vehicles with their nanny who hauls the youngest three back to the house. After work, the trek is reversed with minor tweaking depending on after-school activities. It is a pattern perfected by repetition, but Thursday it suffered catastrophic failure. I was finishing breakfast, when I heard a radio broadcast warning listeners about a dangerous freezing rain event in Great Falls. While loading the dishwasher, I received a text from my son-in-law, Tim, which read “Meagan just rolled the Excursion, all okay so far...” My life instantly froze waiting for details and here is the story. It was a rainy 40 degrees, and Tim headed to work a minute ahead of Meagan. Rain is always welcome in Montana, but this morning it was instantly freezing when it hit the 20 degree pavement of the lowlands. Tim hit the black ice, slid around and pulled off the road to see if something was amiss with the steering on his old pickup. Nearly falling, he grabbed his phone to warn Meagan, but inertia had already sucked her into the vortex. She was driving slowly when her rig swapped ends, but the downhill slope and the frictionless ice

meant her family hauler was picking up speed every second. As they left the

pavement, Meagan hollered, “Lord protect us,” and He did. The Excursion slid sideways, hit the deeper snow of the shoulder and rolled into the ditch before striking the far bank thereby crushing the driver’s side roof. Clara, the oldest, was riding shotgun and was the first out of the rig. Being a survivalist, had she had her pocketknife she would have built a shelter, started a fire and been roasting a couple rabbits while simultaneously removing her six siblings and mother from the wreck. School rules prohibit pocketknives, so she waited for her Dad who was coming back up the road as fast as the ice allowed. First to the scene were Tad and Danielle, new neighbors of Meagan and Tim’s. Tad is a Great Falls police officer and EMT who coincidentally had his jump pack in his car that morning. While hurrying to help, he too slipped on the ice before making it to the Excursion and placing a c-collar around Meagan’s neck. Mike, another neighbor, arrived about the same time as Tim, and everyone began assessing and extracting the six remaining mini-Kimmels before shuffling them into warm idling vehicles. Over the next four hours, Tad, Danielle and Mike hauled my grandkids back to the Kimmel house and solicited the aid of Mike’s wife, Kim, to watch the

little ones while Tim followed the ambulance to the hospital. Truly giving of herself, Kim folded laundry and straightened up the house before baking brownies so as to occupy the little ones. Meanwhile, the ER was quickly overwhelmed with auto-crash victims as well as slip-and-faller pedestrians and by the grace of God, Meagan was only bruised. She was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon and returned home a couple hours before the trophy wife and I pulled into their driveway. Tad, Danielle and Mike all stopped after work to check on the Kimmels. Kelli, a neighbor with whom their only contact had been the customary Montana nod while passing on the highway, pulled into their driveway bringing two trays of chicken enchiladas plus chocolate-chip cookies. This was the first day of a flood of support from neighbors and friends and Meagan wept at everyone’s kindness. This brings me to my point. America truly is a Christian nation where loving ones neighbor as yourself is the norm rather than the exception. Even places like Ferguson and New York City are filled with Christians yearning to help their fellow man. It is only when influenced by the evil one, the ugliness of covetousness gains a foothold. Beware the antichrists fanning the flames of racial hatred so as to empower themselves. Their rewards may be great on earth, but there will be hell to pay in eternity.
