A year in the life of Chef Richard TurnerIt’s been quite a year for Chef Richard Turner of his Michelin eponymous neighbourhood restaurant in Harborne.

Self taught Chef Richard is well known for his passions at the hot plate, and more recently he is seen talking to customers in the front of his restaurant adding to their dining experience.

Following on from last year's Good Food Guide Readers’ Award, this year started with much acclaim being given to his new spring menus. His lunchtime 2 course menu at £25 was hailed as ‘The Best value Michelin Lunch in the region’ by eat-the-midlands.co.uk. Then instead of closing his bijous 28 seater venue for their summer break, Richard worked through and launched a summer e-survey to all his customers asking for their honest feedback and suggestions for the restaurant – resulting in an ‘overwhelming’ response of over 500, according to Richard who took on board many of comments.

“We were overwhelmed with the customer responses,” comments Richard, “detailed and positive, with constructive feedback and suggestions – resulting in adjustments to the service style to make it more relaxed, a new wine list chosen by myself, with more by the glass, as well as more events being hosted.”

Fast forward to September, Richard was invited to appear at Ludlow Food Festival, and Lichfield Festival. He also launched the inaugural Birmingham Independent Food Fair

at Millennium Point in September, where he announced his partnership with his life long love; Aston Villa. He is now working to help develop their allotments initiative – helping youngsters from the area learn about produce, food and gaining skills to get into the hospitality industry.

“The allotments initiative is a real winner, which sadly I can’t say for Villa at the moment, but we all go through bad patches,” adds Richard.

The round of industry awards didn’t pass Turners by, with a prestigious 3 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence awarded alongside the renewal of his coveted Michelin Star for 2015, and more recently highlighted by GQ Magazine as the Best Michelin Restaurant in The City.

“Guides are great,” adds Richard, “but without the customers we can’t operate, so we would like to thank everyone for their on-going support, and we will continue to focus on improvements in our menus and customer service.”

An independent school for girls aged 2½-18 years

The Edgbaston High School Ethos: Educate, Enrich, EngageFollowing outstanding examination results this summer, Edgbaston High School‘s leavers are now studying a broad range of competitive degree courses at some of the country’s most sought after universities, amongst them Birmingham, King’s College, London and Manchester. These achievements are testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils but also to the success of the EHS Ethos. Pastoral care as an integral part of every aspect of school life, working hand-in-hand with academic success, has long been considered a trademark of the School.

Dr Ruth Weeks, Headmistress, says: “EHS offers an enriched educational experience: pupils make excellent academic progress and achieve high standards in their work and benefit from a strong and distinctive system of pastoral care where emphasis is placed on nurturing each girl’s strengths and raising self-esteem.

“We wholeheartedly encourage our girls to be independent, to face new challenges and to acquire new skills. This can provide character-building opportunities for all, which in turn instils confidence and a sense of achievement.

”Combined with excellent teaching this unique approach offers our pupils a truly holistic education.”

See the EHS Ethos in action: Whole School Open Day Saturday 10 January - Nursery, Prep, Senior, Sixth Form departments open from 9.30am - 12.00 noon.

How healthy would your business look if all your customers paid on time?Do you shudder at the thought of expenses like wages and VAT?Do you want to get customers to pay more promptly without upsetting them? What if we were to tell you all this can be achieved without costing the earth or making a long term financial commitment?

The ladies at UK Central Credit Management offer a service that not only brings in what’s owed to you more quickly, but also helps you evaluate your processes to avoid scary financial situations in the future.

Small businesses are the worst for giving credit but not chasing their own money. They are too busy doing a great job for their customers and often embarrassed to chase up payments. But the sad truth is, waiting in vain for these payments to come through is bankrupting businesses.

These charming ladies are no stuffed suits, and have an astonishing success rate, which we at Swan Publishing have seen first hand (within one week!). They will manage invoices, statements going out, cash coming in and resolve queries quickly to get the results you need. And their friendly manner makes you proud to call them a part of your team. They operate as an extension of your business providing a back

office function to make sure the money you have worked hard for finds its way to you. Fast.

It can feel uncomfortable when money is owed to you and you can become emotionally involved. You may even avoid certain people or places because you feel the relationship with some customers has turned sour. But with this service those valuable connections are protected.

Did you know? According to research by Sage and BACS the average amount owed to UK SMEs at any one time has increased from £11,000 in 2013 to an eye watering £36,000 this year.

Don't be a statistic!

As the saying goes, talk costs nothing - so what have you got to lose by giving UK Central Credit Management a call? And you can thank us later!

Do you have any employees? If you do then you know it is a big responsibility and there are a whole host of rules and regulations you need to be aware of or you can get into serious trouble.

Getting their pay right is probably at the very top of their list of priorities and that is where help from someone like Maggie Willetts from MHA Bloomer Heaven can be a godsend.

“One of the most satisfying things about anyone’s employment is to receive a salary payment that is correctly calculated and paid promptly. Most employees never think twice about how the tax, National Insurance, Pensions and so on have been calculated but they do know how much money they expect to take home, so it’s particularly frustrating for them when things go wrong,” she said.

“It is often difficult for employers to explain things and this can cause bad feelings between staff and employers”

“Many employers rely on their accounts staff to calculate and understand the payroll operation and they, in turn, on a computer program. The problem is that as payroll gets more and more complicated with the changes in legislation, mistakes happen that may go unnoticed because of lack of experience and knowledge”.

“Ever-changing, complex legislation surrounding payroll makes it more and more

challenging and keeping staff up to date with all the changes can be costly as can mistakes”.

“I am a firm believer that if you have a water leak you should engage the services of a plumber, therefore, if you have employees you should not trust the payroll to anyone except a professional payroll clerk,” said Maggie.

Only the very large companies can employ dedicated payroll staff but there is a solution for companies of all sizes and that is to outsource, so if this has made you think about your payroll operation please call Maggie at MHA Bloomer Heaven on 0121 236 0465 for a free no obligation chat or quote for peace of mind payroll.

The Clock is TickingIf your child is in year 5 then you will be either in the grammar camp or the definitely not grammar camp or maybe sitting on the fence.

If you are in the grammar camp - unless you are already on the case - you need to start thinking about the 11 plus to give your child the best chance of success.

Terry Greaves of Primary Plus said: “As you are probably aware, grammar are extremely competitive and in the run up to the SATs in May it helps to give children extra help with general literacy and numeracy, particularly if they are on the cusp of a level 5 or 6.

“And if you haven’t yet started thinking about the 11 plus – there is no time to delay. A little help from a private tutor between now and the time of the tests in September will go a long way towards ensuring your child achieves their full potential.

“Grammar school is not for everyone, but we all want our children to achieve the best they can, and beginning secondary school on the right footing is key to their success. After they have started secondary school there will be very little movement between streams so this is a very important year to ensure they start as they mean to go on.

“At Primary Plus we offer a free initial assessment which enables us to give you a clear idea of your child’s potential.”

Mrs Ahmed said: “My son came to Mr Greaves for the year running up to his 11 plus and we couldn’t be more delighted with the result; a great attitude to learning and 260 points in the test!”

Primary Plus is located in the Jewellery Quarter with on-street parking. The small group (up to 6 children) teaching sessions are 90 minutes long and are 5pm-6.30pm and 6.30-8pm weekdays and 11.30-1pm Saturdays.

Teaching focuses on general literacy and numeracy support, SATs preparation and 11 plus preparation.

Denture Care Top TipsTips to prolong the life of your dentures, from Clinical Dental Technician Robert James of Vital Ceramics.

1. Develop a care regime - Clean your dentures every evening. Once removed, massage gums with a soft toothbrush.

2. Soak dentures overnight - When you aren’t wearing your dentures, keep them moist. Use a denture cleaning solution or water to soak them overnight.

3. Have regular dental check-ups - At least once a year.

4. Be positive - New dentures, for most wearers, are not a negative experience. Quality dentures can significantly improve your smile, speech, facial appearance and self-confidence.

5. Don’t put up with ill-fitting dentures - Ideally replace dentures every 4-5 years. Consider a spare set.

How do I manage now I'm on my own? This is a question wills and probate solicitor Clare Martin from Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston is often asked when she is handling the affairs of someone who has just lost their spouse.

“Aside from the obvious emotional trauma of losing a life partner, there are also more practical issues that become of great concern to the surviving partner,” she says.

“You often find that the practical day to day paperwork of home management falls to one or other partner, rarely is it equally shared. And if the first to go is the one who takes care of all things financial then the surviving partner has to learn a whole new skill set.

“As their solicitor I am there to handle the administration of the will, but my role has grown to be much more supportive, particularly when the executor of the will is also the sole beneficiary. Together with the client I help them to build a team of professionals to support them going forwards.

“I see my role as empowering them to let them know that they can manage, to help them to

rebuild their life and gain confidence through a difficult time. We help take away the stress and burden of paperwork so that the grieving person can focus on their emotional healing,” she says.

One of the things Clare can help with on the legal side is variations to the will. Clients generally take advantage of deeds of variation to redirect inheritance for family or tax reasons but these must be signed within two years of death to achieve favourable tax consequences.

Clare adds: “As well as helping in a practical capacity we also take active steps to remember the person who has died. Every year we hold a tree of light service here at Woodbourne to remember lost loved ones, and we have a snowdrop memorial garden that people can visit any time.”

For any queries regarding wills, probate, trusts or lasting powers of attorney please contact Clare Martin on 0121 693 2222.

Birthday Celebrations

A traditional English Christmas

Hundreds of older people in Birmingham have an extra special reason to celebrate. It’s a year since the ExtraCare Charitable Trust’s Hagley Road Village opened its doors.

Discover and delight in the various Christmas customs of Britain brought to life for you on stage.

And the anniversary was marked with celebrations at the Village in Edgbaston where many of the residents met as strangers and have now become friends.

Joan Woodward, who was the first resident to move in, cut the Village’s birthday

The Albion Christmas Show is a collaboration between mac Birmingham & Moseley Folk who will treat you to an evening of traditional English Christmas music, dancing and celebration.

The show has been described as "The perfect antidote to the corporate Christmas" by The Guardian and according to Reuters "The Albion Christmas Band take the audience deep into Britain's winter festival with visions of frosty mornings, a rejoicing Earth, burning logs and berries.”

The Albion Christmas Show is taking place at mac Birmingham on Sunday 14 December at 2pm.

cake along with the Village Manager.

Village Manager Paul Roobottom said: “It has been a fantastic year. To see the friendships that have formed and the difference we have been able to make to people’s lives has been amazing. It makes everything worthwhile.”

More than 300 residents have moved into the Village during the past 12 months, along with furniture, carpets, treasured possessions and pets.

The Village is now fully reserved and oversubscribed with only a few places held back for those in need of care.

The show features the combined talents of Simon Nicol (Fairport Convention), Kellie While (Albion Band) Simon Care (Edward II) and the Guvnor himself, Ashley Hutchings, this show takes you on a guided tour through the Christmas customs of Britain.

commissioned slap organ by THSH Artist-in-Residence Sam Underwood.

For readers wondering what a slap organ might be, this fantastic instrument features tubes which sound at different pitches when hit due to their varying lengths. Sam deliberately picked hollow tubes to collect raindrops in watering cans underneath each tube; a creative solution that ensured both music and nourishment!

We also devised a ‘care plan’ to maintain the garden beyond the life of the project since the garden is now a permanent part of St Thomas.’

What do raindrops, Town Hall & Symphony Hall (THSH) and Ladywood have in common?

Emma from the THSH Education & Community team explains all.

Generation Ladywood, Symphony Hall’s ambitious 21st anniversary legacy project, has enabled us to develop relationships and work creatively with people in our immediate neighbourhood over a three-year period from 2012 to 2015.

A recent example of our work is Musical Gardens, a project delivered for families and staff at St Thomas’ Children’s Centre in B15.

Musical Gardens was designed in conjunction with the centre’s parenting skills strand, and aimed at promoting the benefits of family-friendly outdoor activities through gardening and exploring sound.

We combined outdoor live music performances by THSH artists with learning new gardening skills. This led to the creation of a brand new herb, vegetable and fruit garden in the centre’s courtyard.

Equally prominent in the garden are musical features like wind chimes and a specially

New Birmingham Author Publishes Anarchic Debut Novel Inspired by the City's Modern HistoryMidland tells the stories of three young women as they fight to find their feet amidst the accumulated rubble of the twentieth century.

From the bombsites of the 1940s to the construction sites of the 1960s and the school halls and decaying towerblocks of the 1980s, Honor Gavin has created an ingenious narrative of one Birmingham family that is also a startling, anarchic history of the city itself.

The book weaves together seemingly incongruous places and moments: an industrial accident in a wire factory; a mapmaker struggling to record all the bombs falling from the sky; the chance discovery of a birth certificate; an unidentified elephant skull; a church service held in a ruined swimming pool. The result is something unique and unexpectedly moving.

Described as 'an experiment in not being a novel,' Midland is Honor Gavin's fiction debut and announces the arrival of an exciting and original literary voice. Her electric prose soars and dives, blending keenly observed dialect with urban theory, cinema, farcical digressions and surrealist timekeeping.

At the core of the book is the story of the inner ring road designed by Sir Herbert

Manzoni from 1943 and finally opened in 1971, a Brutalist project whose concrete curves blasted through post-war Birmingham before being deconstructed in the 2000s. In Gavin's hands the road, and those swept along with it, become the ultimate symbol of transformation; fast-forwarding the past into a decaying future, and re-winding the future into an intricate, luminous past.

Honor Gavin was born in Birmingham in 1984. She studied English and History at the University of Oxford, has lived in London, Lisbon, and Berlin, and has written widely on modern literature, film, and architecture. She is also a musician, fond of pop songs. A founding member of the whenwebuildagain.org collective, she currently teaches at the University of Sussex. Midland is her first novel.

Honor Gavin is one of the cleverest people I know.

Edgbaston's New Gastropub OpensA classic white villa in the heart of Edgbaston village is starting a new life as a gastropub and restaurant.

The High Field has a buzzing bar, elegant places to eat overlooking the leafy garden and glamorous private rooms for meetings or celebrations, making it set to be Edgbaston's new social hub.

The High Field is the first pub in Birmingham for independent pub company Peach, who run good places to eat, drink, party and stay across Warwickshire and further afield in Oxfordshire. The Rose & Crown in Warwick is just one of their pubs.

The building itself was once home to local architect Francis W B Yorke, who wrote a seminal work on the building of pubs, "The Planning and Equipment of Public Houses," published by The Architectural Press in 1949. Given that Yorke designed and built the house to live in, there is perhaps a sense of poetic justice that, some 70 years on, his home has ultimately been turned into a pub.

“It’s long been our intention to open a pub in Birmingham, having run a collection of lovely places across Warwickshire and down into Oxfordshire for well over a decade now,” says Peach co-founder Lee Cash, who got

his first step on the managerial ladder as a restaurateur at Raymond Blanc’s Le Petit Blanc in the city in the late 1990s. “The frustration was just being able to find the right place.

“We think we’ve found it now and I for one couldn’t be happier at coming back to Birmingham to open our first Peach pub here,” he says. “We’ve taken our time to get it right, and create a smart gastropub where anyone can enjoy the good stuff. Fresh, home-cooked food, served throughout the day by people with smiles on their faces, good beer and wine as well as cocktails done properly. A place to enjoy great food, great company and great times,” he says.

The High Field is at 22 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, B15 3DP. Tel: 0121 227 7068.

www.highfieldedgbaston.co.uk [email protected]

The pub’s open from 8am - 11pm on Monday to Thursday, from 8am - 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday and from 9am - 11pm on Sunday. Food is served all day.

Celebrating VolunteersA Birmingham charity which supports visually impaired and disabled people has recognised the valuable contribution of its volunteers during a special event at the Hippodrome theatre.

Focus Birmingham, based in Harborne, has been chosen as one of the Lord Mayor of Birmingham's charities for 2014-15. And Councillor Shafique Shah was invited to present a special 'Lord Mayor Award for Volunteering to brother and sister, Brian Evans and Thelma Starling, who together have chalked up more than 30 years of unpaid support to Focus.

The Volunteer of the Year was named as Russell Stevenson, who received the Fred Jakeman Award - named after a former visually impaired trustee of Focus.

Focus Chief Executive Tom Harrison said: "I cannot stress enough how important volunteers are to this organisation.

"Without the extra 80-90 pairs of hands of our volunteers we wouldn't be able to provide the level of support that we do to visually impaired and disabled people. Their support is greatly appreciated.”

Focus Birmingham supports visually impaired and disabled people, together with their carers,

to live fulfilling and independent lives by providing services that reflect their wants and needs.

The charity's day services teams work with adults from the age of 19 to deliver stimulating programmes of activities which are tailored to the needs of the individual. It specialises in working with people with visual impairment and other complex needs and providing appropriate support so that each person can achieve their full potential.

Focus Birmingham currently delivers residential care and support services from locations in Kings Norton (Selly Oak Road) and Erdington (Beech House). Go Green with Treecycling schemeWe all love the smell and appearance of a real Christmas tree but as the pine needles drop and our floor turns green, the trail of pine needles reminds us that disposing of it can be a bit of a pain.

But do not despair; Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has the solution with its exciting Treecycling scheme returning for 2015. On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th January an army of volunteers will be ready to collect discarded Christmas trees for recycling. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled and this is much better for our environment.

In return for a minimum suggested donation of £10, trees will be collected by the Hospice’s corporate volunteers and taken to Birmingham City Council’s household recycling centres, where trees will be turned into compost. This is a great way to avoid any hassle of taking Christmas trees to the local tip by letting Birmingham Hospice do the hard work instead. By signing up to the scheme people will be helping the Hospice care for people with terminal illnesses within their local communities.

Hamish Shilliday, Fundraising Manager said: “This is the second year of our Treecycling scheme and it is an important

way that people can support our Hospice and avoid the hassle of the journey to the tip. The annoying nature of pine needles is that they get absolutely everywhere. You can avoid cleaning the car by letting us take the Christmas tree away for you.”

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice will be collecting in the following postcode areas: B13, B14, B15, B17, B28, B30, B29, B31, B38, B27, and B26. If you live in one of the above listed postcode areas and would like to book your tree collection now, please go to www.birminghamhospice.org.uk/treecycling or contact the Fundraising Department on 0121 472 1191.”

This initiative is kindly supported by Birmingham City Council, Dawnus Construction Ltd, Fitzgerald Civil Engineering Contractors, Mott MacDonald, Opal Contracts, RAW Group, Shaylor Group PLC, Whiting Landscape, Lyndale Estates Maintenance and Forum for the Built Environment.

We won an Award! My Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge magazine is still in its infancy having been launched in August this year, and already has achieved award winning status.

At the glittering international Community Magazine Awards evening in October Amy Watson, Director of Swan Publishing was presented with the award for Best New Magazine for My Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge.

Amy said: “We were honoured and delighted to receive this award which is largely due to the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of our wonderful editor Julia Parsons.

“Julia’s focus on strong locally relevant editorial content, together with the exciting mix of advertisers was what grabbed the attention of the judges. They were particularly impressed that it was supported by the Mayor and its pages were also graced with the likes of Prince Charles and Lesley Joseph.”

“My Solihull, Knowle & Dorridge follows in the footsteps of the success of My Moseley & Kings Heath and My Harborne & Edgbaston which would be nothing without you the reader so thank you for all your support.”

Local Charities seek volunteersThe new year is traditionally a time of year when people take on new activities, and for many people that includes some voluntary work.

The Samaritans and Cruse Bereavement Care are two local organisations that are hoping to benefit from this upsurge in interest, and are appealing for more volunteers to apply to them. Both organisations are long-established charities based in Birmingham city centre.

Both organisations have a selection process, provide training, and are looking for volunteers who can offer to help on a regular basis.

Interpreting LandscapePop down to Harborne art gallery and have a peek at this exhibition which explores British landscapes and seeks to interpret the emotion within them.

The fluidity of shape and form, along with the subtle colours and textures of the British landscape are the inspiration for this solo exhibition by the young British ceramicist Emily-Kriste Wilcox at the Harborne Art Gallery until 31 January 2015.

Interpreting Landscape reveals the emotional and technical intimacy between observation and expression, in paint and ceramics; an intimacy that finds its highest expression in the description of her work as 'painting in clay.’

Emily-Kriste is best known as a passionate ceramicist with a 'fresh and creative approach to the art of making pots' (Freda Wade, co-founder of Pot Easel). Her distinctive ceramic vessels - each individually handcrafted and unique in decorative finish - explore the dynamics of space, surface decoration, colour and texture, increasingly referencing the interplay of form, texture, colour and light of the landscape, sea and sky.

Emily-Kriste is a professional ceramicist. She graduated from Bath Spa (first class) in

2005 and has exhibited widely in galleries and exhibitions in the UK. Her work is held in personal collections in the UK, Europe and the US. She held her first solo show in 2012, in which year she was also awarded the Craft & Design Silver Award (Ceramics). Her work has appeared in many impressive publications, including most recently Australian online magazine, Zoneone Arts in April 2014… watch this space!

Here Comes the BrideNext February the Crescent Theatre will stage the world premiere of a brand new, very English opera, written by Kings Heath residents Alexandra Taylor and Michael Wolters.

The plot of ‘Ava’s Wedding - An English Tragedy’ revolves around that well known English inability to say what you really mean. Each of the characters is involved in a misunderstanding which, if everyone told the truth, could disappear. But because of politeness, shame or duty, nobody speaks up and the problems escalate, culminating in a mass of fights, breakdowns, suicides and murders.

Not only does it feature characters and situations that everyone can relate to, but it is also written in English, and the music takes inspiration from familiar English musical styles, from Renaissance to 1980s new wave and beyond.

“The orchestration is quite unusual,” explains composer Michael, who is also Deputy Head of Composition at the illustrious Birmingham Conservatoire. “It’s a traditional orchestra with a twist, including five flutes, a saxophone quartet and an electric guitar.”

While Michael took on the gargantuan task of writing two and a half hours of music for twenty five voices, a choir and a thirty-piece orchestra, freelance writer Alexandra, who put the words into the characters’ mouths, also had her work cut out.

“On one hand the structure was sitting there waiting,” she says. “The build up to a wedding always includes a proposal, dress fittings, hen and stag parties and a reception. But wrestling over twenty characters and ten interconnected stories into that structure involved a lot of creative thinking - and different coloured post it notes! I can’t wait to see all the drama brought to life on stage.”
