INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Diane Smith had a wonderful article
(see page 11) about how we are all part
of the family of God and need to work
together for our Catholic Community of
Palo Alto. Lots of changes have taken
place and we may not be happy with all
of them, but they are life and we need to
accept them. Yes, we need to continue to
pray for healing for all members, and
support one another. The only solution I
know of is that we get more priests. That
is all the more reason that we need to
work with the Traveling Chalice
Program. The vocations committee set it
up in cooperation with Fr. Shane Deman,
the vocation director. We are using two
chalices from Ayrshire: one in
Emmetsburg and one in Graettinger. We
are asking that parents start talking about
vocations in their homes. Sending home
an attaché case with the chalice, prayers
and information about religious life can
help. You can take it for one week and
then return it. Then the next week it will
be passed on to another family. Our hope
is that through education and prayer that
more young men and women will
consider the religious life.
As I mentioned last Sunday a lot of
young people are searching for things to
give meaning to their lives. Really it is
God who can fill their hearts.

Auction Fest-by Renee Chism
Auction Fest was able to present a check in
the amount of $130,800 to Emmetsburg Catholic
School in May of 2017. Plans are underway for
Auction Fest 2018 which will be held on April 7,
2018. This year we will celebrate our 30th
anniversary of Auction Fest! The fundraising
leading up to Auction Fest is well underway.
Along with the date of the event many of the
big decisions have been made including:
booking the auctioneer, choosing a caterer,
theme idea, and guest speaker.
Wreath sales are completed and will be
delivered the week of Thanksgiving and is a
great money maker for us. On November 1,
Linda Steinkamp hosted a Pampered Chef gift
gathering and Jean Reedy hosted a gift gathering
at her home on November 14. Opportunities
still available include "That's My Pan!" The
website is: thatsmypan.biz/auctionfest. That will
be available until Monday, November 27th. The
final giving chance is Schwanns. Again, this is
online or if you are already a Schwanns
customer you just need to mention ECS and a
percentage of the order goes to the school.
We are blessed in our community to have the
option of a great public school and Catholic
school. Emmetsburg Catholic School has great
kids, teachers, staff, parents, and community
support. It is these things that make Auction Fest
such a huge success year after year. This is a
great group to be part of and we would love for
you to be part of our team.
Just a reminder to view the website for
Mass schedules, Ministry schedules, server
schedules. This newsletter will be available
to read along with short videos from “Word
on Fire” which you can use for your faith
formation and “Life Teen” a movement in the
Catholic church that leads teenagers and their
families into a deeper relationship with Jesus
and His church. The Knights of Columbus
and Catholic Daughters with their respective
officers are listed. Information on St. John’s
Cemetery may also be found on this website.
The Facebook page can be found under
“Catholic Community of Palo Alto.” During the
week a daily reflection is posted. Events and
pictures are posted when needed.
If there is something you would like posted
or pictures that show our Catholic Community
in action please call the parish office at

New Title for our Church Grouping
The new Pastoral Board met in July and chose
the title “Catholic Community of Palo Alto”
from a list of titles that were submitted. This
name will also encompass St. Mary’s of
Mallard in July of 2018.
We thank Arleigh DeWall for the
development of the logo and the front of the
bulletin for our parish grouping.

Immaculate Conception- Religious Education-by Jill Mielke
Religious education at Immaculate
Conception is off to a great start. Megan
Dyhrkopp is just starting her first year with us
teaching the first graders. She is currently on
maternity leave after the arrival of her second
child, Aubrey June. We are very excited to have
Megan sharing her faith with our students. I am
covering her class while she spends time with
her daughters. Diane Brown is teaching second
grade this year. She has four students that will be
making their first communion this year. They are
Ben Chicoine, Braeden Koenck, Olivia Moen,
and Jackson Utesch. Pat Brown continues to the
teach third and fourth grade students. They are
working hard on learning the Apostles’ Creed
and the Hail Holy Queen. The third and fourth
grade students along with the fifth grade students
have been working on the rosary for the month
of October. The fifth graders have Denise
Flaherty as a teacher. They will begin altar
server training in January. Diane Michalec and
Julie Chicoine are working with the sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade students this year.
Four students will be confirmed in April.
They are Brody Alderson, Laura Chicoine,
Grace Olesen, and Noah Skattebo. Ronda Olesen
is in charge of the confirmation class this year.
The tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades are
taught by Staci Girres and will once again be
delivering homemade cookies and treats to the
elderly and shut-ins of the community for
Christmas.
The elementary students will having their
annual Christmas program on Thursday,
December 22nd at 4:30 p.m. with a holiday
reception to follow.
We are still looking for families to sign up to
take the traveling chalice home with them this
year. Our goal is to have each family take it
home for a week and participate in the
experience. If you haven’t taken it home yet,
there is a signup sheet in the gathering area. At
this time, I would also like to thank all the
volunteers that will provide snacks for the
afterschool program on Thursday, as there are
only a few spots left to fill.
The Catholic Community of Palo Alto has a
book study group that meets on Mondays from 9
a.m. to 10 a.m. at Holy Family Parish Center.
We welcome new members from Ayrshire,
Emmetsburg, Graettinger, Mallard, and Ruthven
at any time.
This fall we have discussed a book on Blessed
Father Stanley Rother and the book Something
Other Than God by Jennifer Fulwiler. On
November 20th we will begin a four week study
of the book Faithful Christmas Through the Eyes
of Joseph by Adam Hamilton. In January we
will be discussing the book that our Catholic
community provides for each household at
Christmas.
If you have questions about the group or to
order a book, please contact Sheree at the parish
office at 712-852-3187 or Diane Smith at
712-358-0273.

Cemetery Board-by Jim Stillman
We have completed another year of
straightening stones and repairing or replacing
foundations. We did new foundations and
repairs on 10 monuments and 30 smaller
markers. Thanks to our grant and also to Andy
and Joe Manwarren for a job well done. We are
planning to write another grant to complete our
trail in the cemetery which will go just past the
second driveway into the cemetery.
Also, we are writing a mini grant to complete
our restoration of the stones that are in poor
condition. A new map is being constructed for
Calvary Cemetery in Ruthven, along with the
continued work on entering records on a
spreadsheet for St. John’s Cemetery. Money has
been donated for trees in memory of Claudia
Darrah. Thanks to Sheree who keeps up with the
cemetery by selling plots and making sure the
plots are correct.
Financial Notes
DDA (Diocesan Annual Appeal) is still
on-going as we have not reached our goals for
the parishes. This is important for the diocese
and Emmetsburg Catholic School as the money
raised goes to support our school. If Holy
Family Parish does not reach their DAA goal
we will have to raise it another way.
Connecting Holy Family Church to
Corrigan Hall is planned for the future. It
would be nice to have an indoor ramp that
allowed for greater use of Corrigan. At this
time, we are thinking of spring of 2019. We
have good architectural plans and it would just
be necessary to get new bids. We have the
“Building Fund Savings account” that people
may give to.
Emmetsburg, Ruthven and Ayrshire had a
good report, but what saved us was the
unrealized gains that we made on our
investments, otherwise our normal giving is not
keeping up with expenses. I am hoping for a
good harvest income or we will have to start
taking from savings.
Graettinger had a good report and took in
more than they spent, but have a large bill for
repairing the roof and replacing the skylights in
the parish hall. The approximate cost is
$70,000.

From the Principal’s Desk—Jean Hyslop
We have completed the first quarter and are
into the second quarter. It has been a busy time
at Emmetsburg Catholic School. We have
finished the corn shocks, the students and
parents in grades 5-8 did a great job.
Grandparent’s/Special Friends Day was a
success. The sales of butterbraids and wreaths
have been very successful. The 3rd and 4th
graders performed at the Veterans Day program
at the VFW. Our students have many talents.
Many of the students have enjoyed singing
at the school Masses. They also enjoy reading,
serving, and carrying up the gifts. Ellen Picray
is working on a children’s choir to sing at one
Mass a month. Students in grades 4-8 are
invited to sing with her. We keep your children
posted on practices and Mass days and times so
be sure to ask them.
Conferences have been completed. If you
were not able to make it to your child’s
conference, be sure to give the teacher a call so
you can catch up with each other on how your
child is doing.
We are looking forward to the Christmas
Concert/Pageant on December 20th in the
Church. It is such a beautiful time for the
students. The first graders, seventh and eighth
graders perform the pageant. Please come and
share the Christmas season program with us.
Catholic School’s Week will be the end of
January and beginning of February.
Please watch the bulletin, Facebook, and web-
site for information regarding activities during
this special week. We take time to celebrate
Emmetsburg Catholic School. How lucky we
are to have this beautiful heritage.
Finally, I would like to share with you a post
that I read about 50 questions to ask your child
“How was your day?” I thought it would be
helpful to parents. Often as parents, we ask our
children, “How was your day?” and frequently
they only remember what did not go right. So
here are a few different types of questions you
can ask.
-What made you smile today?
-Can you tell me an example of kindness you
saw/showed today?
-What did you do that was creative?
-What made your teacher smile?
-What made him/her frown?
-What kind of person were you today?
As we get ready for Advent, these questions
might help your child(ren) be reflective about
how they are helping other people. Advent is a
time of waiting, but we also try to focus on how
we can help others during the holiday season.
Many people find the holiday season difficult
due to some life situations…what can we do to
witness Jesus in their lives.

Rosary Society-Graettinger-by Ronda Olesen
CDA’s year started with our potluck dinner
on September 5th. This meeting was a nice way
to say hello to all those members we have missed
over the summer. Our program was in honor of
our members that had passed, Lavonne Sterba
and Maxine Wilson.
At our October meeting, we had Irene
Mayland from Head Start (Book Club) present
the program. This program was very informative
about working not only with the kids but
interacting with the parents.
The officers have tried to shorten the business
meeting. So please try to come and experience
the fellowship with other Catholic women; all are
invited. Come for the whole meeting or what fits
into your schedule.
Please join us for our Christmas Gathering, on
December 5th. All Catholic Community of Palo
Alto women are invited. CDA members are
hosting an “hors d’oevres and wine pot luck”.
We provide the wine and CDA members bring
their favorite appetizer. Then mingling is a must
sharing the joy of the holidays.
All are welcome, in the spirit of our Lord.
The Rosary Society hosted the Annual
Broasted Chicken Dinner in October and
served 638 meals. Thanks to the 127
parishioners from age 12 and up who pitched
in and all the visitors who came to partake for
helping make it a success. Thank you also for
the support of the vendor show, bazaar room
and raffle, they were also very successful. We
hoped our new window blinds would have
been installed in the parish dining room before
the chicken dinner, but we missed it by a few
weeks. The blinds are up now and look
GREAT! Stop over after Mass some week and
check them out.
This year our Rosary Society members
have been very busy making salads/bars and
serving funeral dinners. We appreciate
everyone's support to our fellow parishioners
at this difficult time. May the souls of the
faithful departed rest in peace.

(Monsignor Lafferty Tuition /Foundation
Tax Credit)
Did you know: You can receive an Iowa tax
credit of 65% from a donation to the Monsignor
Lafferty Tuition Foundation (MLTF). Your
total donation may also qualify for a federal
deduction.
What is the MLTF? The MLTF awards
tuition grants to students of qualifying families
that attend Catholic schools in the Diocese of
Sioux City. Anyone can receive this tax credit,
Catholics and non-Catholics. Don’t let this
opportunity pass you by.
Example on how it works: Donor in the 25%
tax bracket gives $1,000 to the MLTF
Tax Benefits
$1,000 Donation
$250 may be saved on federal taxes
$650 (65%) state tax credit
$900 = Net Tax Savings
$100 = Donor cost for his/her $1,000
contribution
There is no limit on the level of an
individual gift. The MLTF can accept cash, as
well as non-cash gifts on a first come first serve
basis until the maximum level of tax credits are
gone. Contact the Diocese of Sioux City for
more information at 712-255-7933 or
www.scdiocese.org or Jean Hyslop or Mary
Brennan at Emmetsburg Catholic School at
712-852-3464. To select the school of your
choice all donations must be received by Dec.
1, 2017. This year we have over $58,719.00, to
date we have raised $21,800.00 so we still need
your help in completing our goal. We still need
$36,919.00. If we don’t reach our goal, we lose
our money and our students do not receive
scholarships.
Remember your tax credits enable
scholarships to be given to qualifying students
who would like to attend Emmetsburg Catholic
School. The scholarships are managed by a
third party and the Diocese of Sioux City. Help
our students and get the benefits of a tax credit
for yourself.

Mary Immaculate Court #1710 has been off
to a running start! We started our fall off with
a workshop in Cherokee with the state officers
who helped update the Courts with any news that
we need to know and implement in our various
courts. We have also celebrated Catholic
Daughters of Americas Sunday with a Mass and
sitting together as a body. Also, participating in
any of the ministries when possible.
We then had White Ribbon Sunday; where
we handed out prayer cards to pray for the stop of
pornography. This is a small remedy, but the more
prayers we give; the less the chance the
devil will have to corrupt our lives and others.
We will be hosted our fall fundraiser – a bake
sale on Sunday, Nov. 12th. Some of the
fundraisers throughout the year include: support
our orphan, donations to our diocesan seminarians,
monetary gifts to Upper Des Moines, our local
food bank, support of the Diocesan Catholic
Charities, Cherish House baby bottle campaign
and many more.
We have a very active court and invite
anyone in interested in joining us to contact any
CDA member in the Immaculate Conception
Parish. Thank you.

Music Ministries-by Myrna Heddinger
Fall is in the air. We are all adjusting to the
time change and farmers are busy with the fall
harvest, all signs of a change of seasons.
Our Church calendar is entering a more
solemn time, the Advent season, a preparation
for the coming of Christ. After we have our
meetings with Father Clem, the service music
for the Masses might change, but if it does it
will be something that you are familiar with.
Hope that you have noticed the three young
gentlemen (Gavin Swift, Sean Europa, and
Byron Maina) that have been playing a variety
of music at the school Mass.
They do an excellent job and we are grateful to
be the recipients of their talent. We also had the
talent of another young lady, Paislie Haywood,
with her ukulele and voice. It would be nice to
let them know how well they are doing.
Any new cantors or musicians from our
newly formed church grouping would be more
than welcome to become a part of the service.
Contact Ellen Picray, 712-298-0481 or Myrna
Heddinger, 712-852-2836, if you are at all
interest. We can work around schedules, etc…
Have a safe fall and blessed Advent.

Pastoral Council News-by Diane Smith
While reflecting on what I was going to write
for this article about the Pastoral Council of the
Catholic Community of Palo Alto, I came
across a meditation in the October 2017 issue of
The Word Among Us that allowed me to look at
our grouping in a new way. This meditation
talked about the Makonde people of Tanzania in
East Africa and how they are especially known
for their "family tree" wood carvings. “From a
distance, it actually looks like a tree, but as you
get closer, you see that it's more like a pillar
made of people. It depicts members of a family--
including extended family and ancestors--
climbing atop one another and supporting one
another. In this way, the Makonde show what it
is to live in a community--that each person's life
is built in part on someone else's."
That's what it is like in our new Catholic
Community. Each parish has countless saints
and unsung heroes of faith supporting them as
part of their foundation, all the way back to the
apostles. Now we are joined together to support
one another and to continue helping each other
along each person's path to heaven. So that
means that we have a vital role to play in our
new Catholic Community and in the Church as
a whole--whether we recognize it or not. “You
are essential in the lives of your fellow
believers. As in a family tree, they need you to
support them, to hold them up as part of the
community of the faithful. And you need them
too. We are all one family."
In that spirit, the Pastoral Council of the
CC of PA is composed of members from
Ayrshire, Emmetsburg, Graettinger, and
Ruthven. We will add a member from Mallard
in 2018. The council meets every other month
with our next meeting planned for December.
The new council has met twice to plan and
coordinate activities within the Catholic
Community. We hosted a BBQ in August, a
Memorial Service with soup supper in
November, and are working to get a widow's
group started. We are also looking at selling the
rectory in Ruthven.
ECS HOPE/Scrip Program-by Mary Brennan
HOPE would like to wish everyone a Happy
Thanksgiving!
Our program continues to grow, new families
are joining and new businesses are supporting us!
Our local Sales Jan-Sep were $106,027.00,
resulting in a rebate of $5,262.00 being applied
to our tuition account. All of this money stays in
our community! Our total sales were
$122,567.00, rebate: $5,887.00.
With the holidays fast approaching, we want
to give you the opportunity to shop early. Turn in
a pre-order before December 1st and you can pick
up and pay for that order in December. This
helps you and us, we are able to order what you
want and have it in stock when you are ready to
pick it up and you can mark it off your list of
things to do!
Also, we are taking pre-orders for Fareway
gift cards for December. For the month of
December they will be offering a 5% rebate
which is a 2% increase. These cards will be
available for purchase December 4-20th.
All Christmas orders must be placed by
December 13th to guarantee receiving your full
order. Orders placed after December 13th, will
not be guaranteed to be your full order. All
orders must be picked up by noon on

Religious Education—Jean Hyslop
CA T HOLIC COM MU NI TY OF PALO A LTO
The religious education classes in Emmetsburg
are off to a great start. We opened the year with a
Mass. It is wonderful to watch the children learn
the ministries and they are so proud of themselves
when they are done. We also had our All Saints
Day Mass, this time the confirmation students
performed the ministries, including helping sing.
What a great group of students. The confirmation
students also had their first retreat!!!! It was great.
We are looking forward to the second retreat
March 11, 2018.
All the first communicant students in the
Catholic Community of Palo Alto are looking
forward to their First Reconciliation on Dec. 10,
2017 in Emmetsburg. Their First Communions
will be celebrated in their respective churches.
This year we are using Blessed from
Matthew Kelly in the second grade, the Pflaum
Gospel Weeklies in grades 3-6, the confirmation
students are using Matthew Kelly’s Decision
Point. The JAM students are starting Theology of
the Body. The teachers and students are happy
with the changes in curriculum.
We talk about Advent as a time of preparing,
but also should try to focus on how we can help
others during the holiday season. Many people
find the holiday season difficult due to some life
situations….what can we do to witness Jesus in
their lives?
Take time during the Advent season to find
quiet and peace in your lives.

Parish music at Immaculate Conception is “alive
and well!” We are so fortunate to have some
very dedicated people to serve in this capacity.
LaVon Park, who had been a faithful organist
for us for nearly 20 years retired a few months
ago. Since that time our faithful organist/pianist
Athlyn Black has been playing for every Sunday
Mass. Athlyn does a superb job of furnishing us
with wonderful music and also accompanying
our cantors. Adding to the Liturgy every Sunday
are our six cantors. Handling this responsibility
very well are Steve Dobbins, Tatum Iverson,
Hillary Hoffman, Suzy Koenck, Diane Michalec
and Madison Petersen. We try to introduce new
hymns from time to time but people seem to like
singing the familiar hymns. The parish does
respond very well and appears to enjoy the
music. The Choir will be meeting soon to
prepare for Christmas. Our Choir consists of all
ages and 12 – 15 members. We always enjoy
preparing for this special time.
We, the Parish of Immaculate Conception
appreciate these people and their assistance with
the Liturgy for Sunday Masses. Thank you so
much to all!
A perpetual “Right of Way” easement was
given to Iowa Lakes Regional Water to
service the water supply in the community
of Ayrshire. Pictured is Diane Smith,
Andrew Buseman and Fr. Currans.

Pro Life-by Jeff and Laura Swift
Welcome cold weather, actually not so sure
about the welcome part! Thanks to all of you
who stood in the cold and rain for the life chain
this year. We had around 40 devoted people who
braved the elements and showed their deep
devotion to respect life. Many asked if we would
cancel, but we say rain or shine and we got rain,
which only shows how much we are dedicated to
being a witness to respecting all life. BIG thanks
to everyone who wanted to help spread the
pro-life message and ordered a very comfortable
respect life shirt. We sold 63 shirts and were able
to donate $255.00 to Mary’s Choice. Mary’s
Choice is a nonprofit resource center serving
women and men with free help during pregnancy
and early childhood. Mary’s Choice is located in
Sioux City, the heart of our diocese. Again
THANK YOU!
This 40 days for Life campaign ended on
Nov. 5th. The website states that 480 lives were
saved during this campaign. Thanks to our small
but dedicated group that met on Wednesday
nights at 6:00 to pray a rosary with pro-life
intentions during the campaign. We will plan on
continuing this for the next campaign which
should be in the spring. We will keep you posted.
Christmas is literally just around the corner
and as we start the church year over again. We
wait anticipating the coming of the Christ Child
who did not come as a king in riches and
elegance but was born as a wee babe in a humble
stable; to save us from our sins. Let us never
forget the unborn and continue to pray for an end
to abortion and to help support those in need.
We meet occasionally to pray and come up
with prolife ideas and activities. If anyone is
interested in being on the pro-life committee we
would love to have you. Contact Laura at
[email protected] or call
712-298-6011. Many Blessings, Jeff and Laura
Swift & the pro-life committee.
