Dear Teachers:

Southern Union State Community College is pleased to invite you and your students to participate in the Language and Fine Arts Tournament to be held Tuesday, November 17, 2015, on the Wadley Campus. This tournament is designed to recognize outstanding students and to foster interest in the language and fine arts. We hope that you will make plans to join us.

The competition is open to high school juniors and seniors only. The tournament will include nine areas of competition: American and English literature, composition, extemporaneous speaking, poetry, art (painting/drawing, photography), theater (individual, duet, ensemble), music (vocal and instrumental), and dance. Theater, Music, and Dance: The competitions in theater, music, and dance (open to juniors and/or seniors) will be limited due to the constraints of time; and entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-accepted basis. The theater competition will include individual, duet, and ensemble performances. The dance competition will offer students the opportunity to perform in ballet, jazz, tap, or contemporary dance. Please read the enclosed detailed instructions carefully.

Trophies will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each category. Although we will not make scholarship presentations on the day of the tournament, Southern Union will continue to offer fine arts scholarships in music, theater, and dance. Auditions for these two-year tuition scholarships are limited to seniors only and are scheduled at the Wadley campus for March 14-15, 2016. (Scholarship applications are included in this packet.) We encourage students who are interested in fine arts scholarships to Southern Union to schedule auditions (seniors only) and to participate in the fine arts competitions (open to juniors and seniors) on the day of the Language and Fine Arts Tournament. The tournament will give students the opportunity to perform and compete for trophies and will provide our faculty the opportunity to identify talented students who will be eligible to compete for scholarships.

We encourage your school to participate in the competitions of this tournament. The entry fee is five dollars per student. Students may participate, as the schedule permits, in more than one event at no additional cost. The entry fees include lunch tickets which will be provided on the day of the tournament. The stars were dim, and thick the night, The steersman's face by his lamp gleam'd white; From the sails the dew did drip— At the rising of the Moon, Till clomb above the eastern bar 210 The hornéd Moon, with one bright star Within the nether tip. EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH COMPETITION(Junior or Senior)

Name of School _____________________________________________

Sponsor's Name _____________________________________________

Contestant's Name_______________________________ Jr. or Sr. ___________________

To prepare for this competition, please read carefully the rules and guidelines below.

Type of Speech: Informative/persuasive

Mode of Delivery: Extemporaneous (Speaker is limited to prepared notes on one side of two 5 x 8 note cards.)

Time: 4 - 6 minutes.

Extemporaneous speaking is the most common mode of delivery.  This mode is sometimes confused with impromptu.  Although it shares some aspects of spontaneity with impromptu, the extemporaneous mode is considerably more structured.  In this mode the speaker prepares extensively, constructing the progression of ideas with the aid of an outline, planning the content thoroughly, practicing until he or she is comfortable and conversational, but never committing himself or herself to a rigid, exact sequence of words.

2014 Extemporaneous Speaking Competition Theme:

Citizenship: What Does It Mean to Me?

Each speaker should begin by introducing himself/herself by contestant number only. (“I am contestant number one.”) Students should not identify themselves by names or by schools. During the speech, students should not use personal or school names.

The enclosed speech evaluation form will be used by the judges to evaluate all participants.

Due to the time limitations and the number of schools participating, only one student per school may participate in the extemporaneous speech category.

Please return this form with the master registration form and the $5.00 per student registration fee by Wednesday, October 16, 2015.

Fine Arts Programs at Southern UnionMUSIC: For many years, Southern Union’s Music Department has been one of excellence and acclaim.

The Southern Union Sound has performed before capacity crowds each year for their Christmas Concert and the Spring Show. Additionally, the choir has performed several times in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall via an open invitation from MidAmerica Productions, NYC. Additionally, the choir has also been issued invitations to perform in Austria and China. Southern Union currently offers thirty-eight music scholarships to outstanding regional and national vocal students. Music students who have completed their studies at Southern Union are highly sought after by the four-year schools with strong music departments. Former members of The Southern Union Sound include the winner of the “Nashville Star” 2005 competition and Miss Alabama 2007. Auditions for music scholarships are scheduled for March 14-15, 2016, at the Wadley Campus. Tips for Performers in the Theater Competition

Don't1. Individuals: Don't merely tell a story in your monologue or simply recite a poem. Show the

character in a point of conflict. Remember, we want to see you act.

Duets: Don't forget your partner; support your partner by establishing eye contact and listening to him/her.

Ensembles: Don't break character when another performer in your ensemble is speaking. Remember that the audience/judges can see everyone on stage.

2. Don't use a forced dialect, such as British, French, or exaggerated Southern. General American dialect is usually best.

3. Don't comment on how you think you did at the end of the performance by sighing, groaning, covering your eyes, shrugging, etc. Even if you are unhappy with your performance, you should smile, say "Thank you," and exit proudly.

Do1. Stay within the time limit. The time limit should be given careful consideration in the selection of material and in your rehearsals.

2. Choose a piece that you have a connection with, both in age and theme.

3. Choose your costume or clothing carefully. If you decide to wear a costume, a dress rehearsal is very important. If you choose to wear your school clothes, avoid t-shirts with logos or anything that distracts attention from your face.

4. Stay in character!

5. Come prepared. Practice, practice, practice!!

Criteria for Evaluation of Theater Competitions

1. Physicalization: Poise, use of space, body language, appropriateness of physical interpretation and characterization.

2. Vocal Delivery: Projection, articulation, expression, accuracy of vocal interpretation andcharacterization.

3. Characterization and interpretation of role(s): Convincing, sustained.4. Duet/Ensemble: Interaction, communication, support.

While costumes, props, and make-up can enhance a performance, students will NOT be judged on these elements. Students who choose to perform in school clothes will not be at any disadvantage in the competition! Props and sets should be kept to a minimum in order to eliminate delays between performances.

Sponsors, please note these guidelines.

1. Please make your students aware of the rules and guidelines for the Theater competitions and for the audience.

2. Please carefully approve each contestant's selection of material to make sure that it meets the rules of eligibility for the competition category and that the material is appropriate for a school audience.

3. Make sure that students are ready to perform when called. The order of performances will be determined by the College to make the best use of the limited time for competition. Schools will be notified of the order of performances. If students are not present and ready to perform in the designated order, the students may be disqualified. Props and sets should be kept to a minimum in order to eliminate delays between performances.

4. Each entry is allowed one contact person backstage during the performance. This person may or may not be the sponsor. This person should be available to the Southern Union stage crew to answer any questions. This person may also prompt the performer if it is absolutely necessary. Please remember that prompting results in a scoring penalty.
