Volume 13, Issue 1 Friday, February 9, 2018 Dear School Family, Welcome to 2018 and a very special welcome to all the new families that are joining us this year.
It has been an exciting
start to the year, with
many events already
taking place. Our
Swimming Carnival was
held in Week 1 with a
fantastic community atmosphere. Many thanks to
the Parents and Friends for providing the BBQ
for students on the day.
Our Year 7 Meet the Care Group Teacher
evening was also held in Week 1, which was a
great opportunity for parents to connect with
Care Group teachers and other families. An
opportunity to meet with Care Group teachers of
Year 8 to 12 students is coming up in Week 4
(Tuesday February 20).
Term 1 is very busy in the life of the School. This
week, students in Years 8 and 10 have been
away on their respective camps. Highlights from
the camps will be included in the next newsletter.
Open Evening is always a wonderful celebration
of our school, and I encourage you to save the
date, Thursday March 22.
Starting a new school year can be very daunting,
especially for students who are new to the
School. However, it can also be exciting to start
the year afresh with renewed enthusiasm and
motivation. Students are encouraged to start the
year off being well-organised and making a study
schedule to keep up with the demands of high
school, especially for our senior students. Start
assignments early to avoid stress later in the
term, when work might be due for a number of
subjects.
Congratulations to Dianne Vo, our Dux for 2017
achieving an ATAR of 97.25. It was a pleasure to
have Dianne come and speak at our Week 2
Chapel to encourage the students in their school
journey. Dianne was able to give some insight
into the strengths and challenges she found
throughout school and especially Year 12.
Dianne will be studying a Bachelor of Health and
Medical Science at the University of Adelaide.
We wish her and all of our graduates the very
best, as they move into this next stage of life. We
don’t always hear about what opportunities our
students were offered at TAFE, or other training
organisations. We’d love to hear from students
who were offered positions in courses that are
not listed in this newsletter.
Message from Mr Rijken: Our term scripture
comes from Romans 5:1-5. “Therefore, since we
have been justified through faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through
whom we have gained access by faith into this
grace in which we now stand. And we boast in
the hope of the glory of God.3Not only so, but we
also glory in our sufferings, because we know
that suffering produces perseverance;
4perseverance, character; and character,
hope.5And hope does not put us to shame,
because God’s love has been poured out
into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has
been given to us.”
The high school years go very quickly and I
would really encourage all students to involve
themselves in the many activities that are
happening in the life of the school. Our school
motto is ‘Pursuing excellence for the glory of
God.’ The emphasis is on the pursuing. It is
about trying to do our best in all endeavours.
MERIT CEREMONY GOVERNMENT HOUSE
It was my pleasure to attend the SACE Merit
Ceremony at Government House. Brittany May
achieved a Merit in General Mathematics, which
is an exceptional effort. Mr Rijken and Mr
Hudson also attended the ceremony, and we
were able to join in celebration with three Mile
End students who achieved Merits last year:
Tyler Whittaker achieved a Merit in Physics,
Grace Bleby achieved a Merit in Modern History,
Gerard Brandt achieved a Merit in the Research
Project. Well done to all four students of Temple
Christian College!
Eliza Buckoke
Campus Principal, Temple Christian College
On Friday of Week 1, we took the whole school to the Salisbury Swimming Pool for our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival. We
were blessed with great weather throughout the day again. It was a great day of fun and competition, including some very creative
costumes and energetic team songs. Each year we seem to get more elaborate and enthusiastic team chants! This year, Mrs
Buckoke had the tough job of deciding the winner of best dressed as well as best team chant for some bonus points.
Throughout the day we had a lot of close races, with many of the age champions only being decided by a couple of points. This
year’s age champions were:
We also saw the following records broken this year:
U14’s Girls Backstroke – Liana Sklenar – 47.32s
U16’s Boys Freestyle – Ethan Crook – 27.36s
U16’s Boys Backstroke – Ethan Crook – 33.22s
U16’s Boys Breastroke – Ethan Crook – 38.49s
West was once again dominant, winning the Swimming Carnival for the fifth year in a row. The points for the day are as follows:
West – 434
North – 307
South – 306
East – 177
Congratulations to all who participated, we had 82 students swimming in at least one race.

MISSIONS
As a school we have always been incredibly proud of the way in which we
have supported, and participated in mission, both locally and on a global
scale. From as close as Baptist Care in the inner city of Adelaide, to as
far as Papua New Guinea and Cambodia, our desire is to introduce our
students to ways in which they can participate with God in expanding his
Kingdom in the world and pursuing justice for those less fortunate than
ourselves.
Each Term we have a different mission focus for our fundraising efforts.
In Term 1, the focus is on PNG and the support of Sunrise Bethel
Christian School in Port Moresby. In Term 2 we shift to Cambodia, where
we support a variety of organisations which work with underprivileged
and/or exploited children. Term 3 is when our students have the
opportunity to support or participate in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine,
and Term 4 has traditionally seen our Care Groups pack gift boxes for
Operation Christmas Child.
I will be speaking with the school community soon about the opportunity
to participate in one of our overseas mission trips in 2018. Our ten day
PNG trip will occur at the beginning of Term 3, and our Cambodia Trip
takes place in the last two weeks of Term 3. These are both remarkable
opportunities to experience a different culture, and to see first-hand how
God is at work in a very different part of the world than our own. They are
also a chance to learn and grow through acts of service, where we
attempt to bring life into difficult situations. The trips are open to students
in Year 10 and 11. For more information or expressions of interest,
please contact me or Mrs Bernadette Scarman at the school.

Communication Procedure
The following is Temple Christian
College’s Communication Proce-
dure. The options available to con-
tact staff are: through your child’s
Student Planner, via email (see list
below), or a phone call to the School
on 8256 9600.
If you have an enquiry regarding a
student issue (e.g. challenges with
socialising, bullying, health, etc.),
please contact your child’s Care
Group Teacher. Most issues can be
resolved by speaking to your child’s
Care Group teacher, who can often
liaise on your behalf with other staff
members.
If you have an enquiry regarding an
issue with a specific Subject (i.e.
what your child is learning, your
child’s progress, learning challeng-
es, teacher-student concerns, your
child’s behaviour in class), please
contact the teacher of that subject.
If you have an enquiry regarding a
behavioural issue and have already
met with the Care Group/Subject
teacher concerned, please contact
Mr Tony Hudson (Assistant Princi-
pal—Student Development ).
If you have an enquiry regarding
learning or curriculum issues and
have already met with the Subject
teacher concerned, please contact
Mr Simon Bradtke (Assistant Princi-
pal—SACE/Curriculum ).
If you have followed the outlined
communication procedure and the
issue is still unresolved, an appoint-
ment can be made with the Campus
Principal, Mrs Eliza Buckoke.
To help you communicate effective-
ly, we have listed all of the teacher’s
email addresses below.
Our goal is to resolve, to the best of
our ability, all challenges that your
child might be facing at school. This
can best be done by following the
communication protocol as outlined
above. Leadership can only pro-
ceed with matters if this procedure
is followed.
Crossing at the Emu Crossing
Students, please remember it is important when crossing at the Emu crossing, that you wait
until the cars have stopped, and the students holding the lollipops give the go ahead to move.
Students have been moving as soon as the lollipops sign is held up, but they must wait until the
monitors say it is clear to do so.
Congratulations to Year 9 stu-
dent Annika Simmonnette, for
receiving an Accomplishment
Award for her entry in The Smith
Family Writing competition for
Year 7 - 11s.
The topic was ‘A World of Your
Own’. Annika has a flair for Nar-
rative writing including a strong
use of imagery, which allows the
reader to visually imagine the
story.
Well done Annika!!!

Rules Regarding Visiting Bethany Christian School
In consultation with the Leadership at Bethany Christian School the
following rules have been put in place, especially due to the growth
of both schools, and for the Welfare, Health and Safety of students
and staff at both schools.
1. Temple students are not to visit staff at Bethany Christian
School, unless organised by the Bethany Christian School
staff.
2. Bethany Christian School property is out of bounds to Tem-
ple students at all times, except for the following reasons:
- Dropping off and picking up siblings.
- Going to the Bethany Christian School Turning Circle to
meet siblings to be picked up after school.
- When picking up siblings, you must wait until the Betha-
ny Christian School Bell sounds at 3.10pm, and not go
onto their property earlier. You can wait in front of the
canteen between 3pm and 3.10pm.
- Students have been requested not to wait in the covered
verandah at Bethany Christian School until after 3.10pm.

School property as a short cut to Byron Bay Drive. This in-
cludes the oval, the buildings and the footpath in front of the
carpark. Our entry and exit gates is Gate 2 (Centre Main
Entrance). Bethany Christian School gates, including the
pedestrian gates, are not to be used at any time to enter or
exit the school grounds, unless you are dropping off or pick-

4. Bethany Christian School toilets are not to be used by Tem-
ple students, except when attending a supervised Bethany
Christian School Event or Church and Youth functions.

Please note that you will need your family code (located on your fee statement) to use this service.
This is a reminder that the school has chosen to become a "Nut Aware" school.
This awareness has been implemented because there is an increased number of students at our school who have
severe peanut/nut allergies. These students cannot be exposed to nuts in ANY form,
as this will trigger an anaphylactic reaction - that is a reaction requiring an immediate
injection of adrenalin, ambulance attendance and hospitalization.
This has very serious consequences for our students and in their best interests, we
ask that care is taken with all peanut/nuts and food containing nuts within the school.
The Canteen/Home Ec. has also undertaken the change. The school acknowledges
that due to food processing practices, it is impractical to eliminate nuts or nut products
entirely from an environment where there is food. Thus "Nut Aware" School.
NUT AWARENESS
PARENTS AND FRIENDS As parents, a vibrant school community is important to us. Being
involved in the Parents and Friends group not only gives us the
opportunity to be actively engaged in supporting events and initiatives,
but provides a wonderful avenue through which to get to know and work
alongside other parents. Together we make a difference in the life of the
school.
If you would like to join us, an invitation is extended to all interested
parents and friends to join us at any of the Parents and Friends meetings
held through the year.
If you have any questions, agenda items or suggestions for the Parents
& Friends,
please email Susanna Fanto - [email protected]
Our next meeting - Wednesday February 21 @ 7pm (Staff Room)
