We hear the stories of Ohioans struggling with the threat of hunger every day. We listen to them speak about the impossible choices they have to make between paying bills and purchasing food.

We talk to hard-working parents like Spencer, who told us he works full time but is still relying on a local food pantry for help and is considering moving in with relatives in order to make ends meet.

We talk to adults living with disabilities like Adam, who told us he tries his best to budget but that sometimes he runs out of food and has to come to a local soup kitchen for meals.

We talk to older adults like Kitty, who told us about how difficult it is for her and her husband to afford nutritious food on their fixed incomes without help from their local foodbank.

We want you to understand our story as Ohio’s largest charitable response to hunger, too. Our work to provide food and other resources to people in need relies on partnerships with faith-based and community organizations, government agencies, elected officials, corporations, foundations, and individuals just like you. In this report, we are pleased to highlight some of our most valued partners– the local farmers, growers, and producers who make our food programs possible.

To solve the alarmingly prevalent issue of hunger in Ohio, we must continue to unite Ohioans from every walk of life in our mission to provide the basic necessity of nutritious food to people like Spencer, Adam, and Kitty. So many of us are just one illness, emergency, or layoff away from finding ourselves in their shoes– we must not let anyone struggling with hunger walk in those shoes alone.

Thank you for your contributions to our shared mission,

Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, Executive Director Matt Habash, Board Chair

We Source FoodWe purchase surplus produce from Ohio farms, shelf-stable products, and protein-packed foods. Through a combination of public and private funds and donations, we stretch each dollar as far as we can to ensure cost-effective food sourcing.

We Sort and Store FoodThe food we purchase is distributed to our 12 member foodbanks. The foodbanks operate warehouses where they sort large quantities of food for distribution.

We Supply FoodOur member foodbanks distribute food to about 3,300 local food pantries, soup kitchens, and other hunger relief agencies in all of Ohio’s 88 counties.

We Share FoodThis year, 9,096,826 visits were made to local pantries— with many households visiting more than once. Nearly 15 percent of visits were for seniors, and over 34 percent were for children.

In state fiscal year 2013, Governor Kasich and the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives made extraordinary investments in Ohio children and families struggling with food insecurity. Governor Kasich issued an Executive Order to support a weekend backpack meals program for the second consecutive summer. This program provided meals each weekend for 10 weeks to children that normally rely on free and reduced-price school meals during the school year (like Cory and Eli, pictured above). The Executive Order also included funding for an innovative summer meals delivery program, which invested in efforts to connect children in rural, remote areas with kid-friendly, shelf-stable meals. Another Executive Order by Governor Kasich provided funds for the purchase of fresh produce to distribute to those children and their families through mobile farmers markets. Governor Kasich also invested Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds in OFPACP to provide additional fruits and vegetables to Ohio’s foodbanks.

The Ohio Food Program and Agricultural Clearance Program (OFPACP) is a proven public-private partnership that uses two

complementary programs to make fresh fruits and vegetables, protein items, and shelf-stable foods available to Ohio’s 12

Feeding America foodbanks.

The Ohio Food Program uses funding from the State of Ohio to purchase protein-packed, center-of-the-plate foods in bulk at low rates in order to keep foodbank shelves stocked with essential commodities. The Ohio Agricultural Clearance Program directs surplus agricultural products from Ohio farmers, growers, and producers to Ohio foodbanks, making nutritious food available

to hungry Ohioans and ensuring that fewer crops are left to waste in the fields.

Commodities secured and distributed through OFPACP accounted for over 20 percent of all food distributed by Ohio’s

12 Feeding America foodbanks in state fiscal year 2013.

“I cannot say enough about OBB.I have been doing OBB applications for five

years. It is the most helpful program of all the programs I’ve been involved with as a Chaplain

with the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for 19 years.”

Arthur Baron, Corrections Reception Center

Working Together. Transforming Communities. Nearly $1 billion in potential work supports and tax credits returned

to our neighbors and friends throughout Ohio

since 2006.

“OBB is ‘better access.’ I use it not only for clients, but also for myself and my family. Clients love that they can call me with their needs and questions. It

is a wonderful outreach tool.”

Michelle Smith-Wojnowski, Neighborhood Health Association

“The OBB allows my small organization to more effectively serve the people

in our rural community.”

Carlene Sands, Stepping Stones

Outreach Ministries

“We have been involved with the OBB since 2006. We value the OBB as an essential tool to provide those most

vulnerable with the basic needs of life. As the OBB grows and adds

programs it expands what wecan offer our clients.”

Nancy Laird,Urban Appalachian Council

“When there seems to be no hope, the OBB gives people

hope. It gives them courage and fortitude to keep on going.”

Jan Patton, Helping Hands Health and Wellness Center

“OBB means direct outreach. Many times residents don’t

understand what is available to them. OBB provides that information and makes it easier for residents to

apply for those benefits.”

Cheryl Mason, Medina County Dept. of Job and Family Services

“OBB means connecting people to programs, resources, and services that could enhance their quality of

life. Linking families to benefits that they can access to eliminate some of

their physical, mental, andemotional stress. Knowing at

the end of the day that we have served those in need and served them with dignity and respect.”

Ohio Pork Producers Council: Pork Power ProgramThe Ohio Pork Producers Council (OPPC), along with its members and partners, made a generous donation of 37,554 pounds of ground pork in March 2013. This locally raised, produced, and processed pork provided protein-packed meals to thousands of hungry people in the Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and Toledo areas. Since launching the Pork Power Program in 2009, OPPC and its members have donated nearly 200,000 pounds of nutritious pork to Ohio’s foodbanks.

Participating pork producers included D & H Meats, Mt. Victory Meats, and Marshallville Packing Company, Inc. Five foodbanks received donations: Cleveland Foodbank (7,440 lbs), Freestore Foodbank (10,800 lbs), Mid-Ohio Foodbank (8,604 lbs), The Foodbank, Inc. (5,892 lbs), and Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank (4,818 lbs).

Ohio Poultry Association: Egg DonationThe Ohio Poultry Association (OPA), along with member egg farmers, donated more than 750,000 eggs in May 2013 as part of National Egg Month. These locally raised eggs had an estimated retail value of approximately $100,000 and provided needy children, adults, and seniors with a fantastic source of protein that foodbanks are often otherwise unable to provide. This donation continued and built upon a longstanding partnership between the OPA and its members and Ohio’s emergency food assistance network.

Participating egg farmers included Ft. Recovery Equity, Hemmelgarn & Sons, Hertzfeld Poultry Farms, Rindler Poultry, Ross-Medford Farms, and Weaver Brothers, Inc. All 12 of our member foodbanks received donated eggs.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Ohio, Inc. lent a generous helping hand in spring 2013 when they donated $60,000, divided amongst Ohio’s 12 Feeding America foodbanks, to support the purchase and distribution

of fresh produce items for hungry Ohioans. Through this donation, UnitedHealthcare demonstrated their willingness to encourage improved

health through increased access to nutritious foods. Food purchased included apples, cabbage, greens, lettuce, onions, potatoes, sweet corn,

and sweet potatoes.

Ohio Penal Industries, part of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC), is dedicated to training for offenders, contributing to their successful reentry to society. Our innovative partnership with ODRC

continued this year, providing not only fresh vegetables for hungry Ohioans, but also agriculture employment training for offenders. The Mansfield

Correctional Institution grew 47,084 pounds of produce, including beets, cabbage, eggplant, peppers, radishes, fall squash, sweet corn, tomatoes,

yellow squash, and zucchini.

The Columbus Foundation and its family of donors— including the Byron and Joann Bossenbroek Family, Lois S. and H. Roy Chope, Adelaide C. Craig, Richard and Linda Gunther, Robert B. Hurst, James W. Overstreet, William A. and Jane B. Scheurer, and Richard H. and Ann Shafer Funds— generously continued their longstanding support for The Ohio Benefit Bank this year. The vision and leadership of The Columbus Foundation has empowered The

Ohio Benefit Bank network to serve nearly 500,000 Ohioans since 2006.

The Ohio Association of School Business Officials (OASBO) generously supported the Ohio Association of Foodbanks through proceeds from its fundraising efforts. We continue to partner with them to raise awareness of programs available to address childhood hunger in Ohio schools and beyond. Thank you, OASBO!

We continue to proudly serve as a No Kid Hungry® Ally through our partnership with Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America. Our No Kid Hungry Ally grant through Share Our Strength has not only helped to support our efforts to increase access to summer meals and SNAP, but has also increased our ability to leverage additional funding and support for childhood hunger relief initiatives. Thank you Share Our Strength!

Ohio’s first-ever Innovative Summer Meals Delivery Program— funded through an Executive Order by Governor John Kasich and carried out in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the Ohio Department of Education, and participating program sponsors— helped us to provide weekly summer

meals to about 1,700 children at risk of hunger and living in some of the most remote, rural areas of southern Ohio.

About 680,000 children in Ohio don’t always know where their next meal will come from. Hunger has serious consequences for a child’s ability to learn and grow—and we believe that no child should have to endure those consequences. Thank you for working with us to prevent children in Ohio from going hungry.
