Page 2: Double page spread overview edited

These three double page spreads are from We Love Pop magazine. Each double page spread has a similar look and maintains the personality of We Love Pop. The symbiotic link is maintained between these two pieces and both can clearly and quickly be identified as a double page spread for We Love Pop. They are produced with the hope that the double page spread will entice and attract the audience to want to read the main feature article.

Each article features the artists name and the We Love Pop masthead in the top corner. This not only allows the double page spread to quickly be recognised as a We Love Pop article, but also informs the reader of the feature artist. By placing it in the top right corner, when the reader is quickly flicking through to find the page they are looking for, they will see the artists name and stop to read that particular article.

Both these double page spreads follow the general layout conventions of a double page spread. They feature the general main image on the right page, and the main body of text on the left. This allows the text to be broken up and make the overall article look more visually appealing. The image always features on the right page as when the reader is flicking through the magazine, they will see the image and stop to read the article. Each article also features smaller related images that are placed in between and around the text. These images are in different locations to the studio setting of the main image and feature with a caption explaining what the artist is doing. This will draw in the reader as they have a insight into what the artists do in their spare time. Also, seeing the artist doing what they do in their spare time could appeal to the TA, as she could see the artist as being more human, as opposed to seeing them in a studio shot,

posing. The smaller images also add a further visual feel that will really appeal.

Both of these double page spreads maintain a clear colour scheme throughout. The main colour scheme is first presented in the title of the article. The main colours are presented as the title is split into two different colours. This is a clear convention of We Love Pop double page spreads as its features commonly. The colour scheme is clearly maintained throughout the three articles by the colour of the text, the background colours and the extra shapes featured throughout the frame. The title is presented in the signature We Love Pop font which is used throughout the article. This, again, maintains the brand identity and allows the article to be easily recognisable as from We Love Pop.

Each spread features a pull-quote from the article, which is another common feature of double page spreads. This gives the audience an extra insight into the content of the article and grabs their attention. It draws the audience in and makes them want to read the article. The pull-quote that features is always something juicy and scandalous. This is to entice the audience and inform them that if that’s just a quote, imagine how scandalous the whole article will be! So they read on.

In each image, the artist is making direct address. This would appeal to the target audience as it creates a personal feel to the magazine. It also shows the artists confidence, which the reader will respect and look up to. Each article also features a popular pop artist that the target audience would want and expect to see featuring in a pop magazine. This would draw in the TA, as they would see their favourite artist is in a main and detailed feature article. These particular artists

would draw in the audience as they are well-known, talented and popular pop artists. Cher Lloyd is also a very controversial pop artist who challenges ‘the norm’ of a female pop artist. This would draw in the audience as they know that her interview will be entertaining, enticing and a must read.

Another common feature that these three double page spreads is the standfirst underneath the headline. This allows the audience to get a clue and small summary about the topics that the artist covers in the article. The point of this feature is to draw in the audience as it gives them a taste of what juicy gossip is in store for them when the y read the article. The strap line always infers that the content is exclusive and full of must-know gossip which draws in the audience more. For example, the standfirst on Cher’s article features ‘forget everything you think you know about Cher Lloyd’. This informs the audience that the article is going to be full of fresh gossip about Cher Lloyd that they need to read. And the standfirst featured in Rihanna’s article informs the audience of the variety of topics that will be covered in the interview. Such as ‘Rihanna’s rivals…Her rebellious streak and Katy Perry.’ This will draw in the audience as it displays the interesting topics that are bound to bring fresh and juicy gossip.

Each of these double page spreads features an interview rather than an article. This draws in the reader as they know that the information is straight form their favourite artists. This means the information will be valid and honest. Whereas, with articles, it is usually the journalists opinion and isn’t necessarily accurate. The images are also very similar. The images of Rihanna and Olly Murs are very similar as they both use a medium shot and are clearly set in a studio setting. They’re posing, making direct address and smiling. This will draw in the TA as they know the

article will be upbeat. They are all clearly in a studio setting and use

Each of these double page spreads features the questions in a bright colour and bold font. This makes the questions stand out and allows the audience to easily differentiate between the speakers. This is a common feature of double page spreads as it makes the overall article easier to read and understand. It also helps make the article look more visually appealing as it breaks up the text.

Another feature that these three articles share is that they highlight certain parts of the article. This is generally used to highlight certain shocking or important information. It allows it to stand out to the reader. It also helps them to find the most juiciest parts of the article.

Having carrying out this overview, it is clear that We Love Pop have their own, unique brand identity that they successfully maintain throughout all sections of their magazine. It has also clearly shown me the main and vital conventions of double page spreads that I must feature in my own double page spread.
