Four months until the 400

It is four months exactly from today until the start of the Ham-

ilton 400, the much anticipated V8 Supercar street race.

It is the only leg of the series in New Zealand and promises to be a huge boost for the Waikato region.

Hamilton has won the race for seven years and is investing a huge amount of resources preparing the cir-cuit for the inaugural 2008 event being held April 18 and 19.

Driver will be competing for the Mark Porter Memorial Trophy in memory of the well known Waikato driver tragically killed

while racing at Bathurst

last year. Tickets for the event are now

on sale through Ticketek, with a range of options available for motor

racing fans. The event is limited to 55,000 per

day for the fi rst year which includes nearly 20,000 grandstand seats.

While there will be excellent oppor-tunity for general admission,

the best viewing will be from the seven major grandstands

which all have good views to the 12 big screens around the

circuit. The ticketed area is at the

top of the circuit running from the Waikato stadium, which pits and start-fi nish line on Mill St through to Seddon Park, which will be the venue for two nights of free concerts for ticketholders after the day’s racing.

RICK KELLY wins the Pukekohe round of the V8 Supercar championship earlier this year, the last time the event will be held there for at least seven years following the move to a Hamilton street race for 2008 - 2014.

Ford makes an awesome job of MondeoBy Dean Taylor

Ford Mondeo fans hanging out for a drive of the awe-

some new model need wait no longer.

The most popular 2.3 litre Duratec six speed auto is available now for test driv-

ing at Fairview Motors. My base model sedan was a great looking car and delivered a high level of performance and driver satisfaction.

And already the new Mondeo is a New Zealand Car of the Year contender and has been named New

Zealand Herald Car of the Year.

The new Mondeo is wider than the previous model, has improved steering and is roomier inside.

It has a bulkier look, design features to improve safety aspects, but it also improves the overall appear-ance of the car.

Models include the two litre fi ve speed manual sedan and wagon and the 2.3litre, six speed auto sedan, wagon and Zetec hatch (with sports pack option).

The bigger engine pro-duces 118kW of power and 208Nm of torque - plenty of go for the new Mondeo despite it being generally bigger all round.

The six speed is a terrifi c gearbox - this car feels like it is always in the right gear.

Interior is also very good - it has a good mix of function and design. Steering controls

for the audio and cruise con-trol are well placed - and it is through necessity that I can quickly get used to the op-posite controls for indicators, wipers etc. (although I still

think it is illogical). The Mondeo comes

with an impressive sound-ing sound system that has auxiliary input for modern music devices. Front and rear

room is impressive, as is the substantial boot.

Safety features are com-pletely integrated into a driving package that gives awesome control, traction

and stopping power.Looking through the op-

tions, I would say the sports pack leather interior and 18” alloys add heaps of appeal to an already great car.

Incentives wanted to buy cleaner carsA survey by the New Zealand

Business Council for Sustain-able development shows

New Zealanders are worried about air quality and back the Government’s new moves to bring in tougher emis-sions controls on imported vehicles.

However, they also believe the new emissions standards will put up the prices of new and imported vehicles. Some 48% say this is likely to result in them delaying replacing vehicles and they would strongly support a policy to bring in a cash incen-tive to get the worst polluting cars, aged 10 or older, out of the national fl eet.

The fi rst national polling on the vehicle emissions issue, un-dertaken by ShapeNZ for the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, shows:T 93% believe vehicle

emissions in New Zealand are a problem T 78% are personally

concerned about the quality of air where they live, with 45% believing it has become worse in the past fi ve years

Some 74% agree with the policy to ensure vehicles im-ported to New Zealand meet the emissions standards of the countries in which they are produced, and 44% think the Government is acting at about the right pace, 15% think it is acting too quickly, 36% too slowly.

Controversy swirls around claims the policy will increase prices and result in people holding onto older high-emis-sion vehicles for longer.

The public agrees with this view.

T 68% expect the policy will lead to vehicle prices rising, and 53% expect rises will be between $1000 and $5000 per vehicleT 69% agree that, as a result,

people with older high-emission vehi-cles will keep them longer.

When asked about the vehicle they personally use, 48% say they are less likely to replace if prices go up, while 40% say it will make no difference.

Some 18% say yes when asked if they suspect or know their 10-year old plus vehicle is a high emission one.

Asked if the Government should offer owners of high emission vehicles, aged between 10 and 15 years,

money to scrap their vehicles and help them replace them with more fuel effi cient ones, 58% say yes, 31% no and 11% don’t know.

They want this policy to start in centres where air quality is a signifi cant issue.

The Business Council, whose 61 members’ annual sales of $44 billion equate to about 34% of gross domestic product, has been advocating for two years for incentives to clean up the vehicle fl eet, one of the oldest and dirtiest in the world.

Business Council Chief Executive, Peter Neilson, says his organisation, which includes Toyota, Honda and BMW as members, strongly supports the new emissions standards.

“When you’re in a hole you stop digging. The Government is going to start doing that with newly imported new and used vehicles. Now we’ve also got to deal with the poor quality older vehicle stock that’s already here. Kiwis will back an extra new policy to do that.

“The research shows they believe vehicle emissions are causing earlier deaths and aggravating the asthma problem. And they’d like assistance to do

the right thing and help fi x it.“The public clearly agree with

the arguments about the potential impacts of higher emissions standards, fl owing to higher prices and slowing replacement of dirty vehicles. But they’re very concerned about air quality, health and doing the right thing. They will back a scrappage fee solution,” Mr Neilson says.

Our pride and joys...

When you visit Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club members Ron and Rose Olsen’s home it it obvious they are fanatical about Fords. They don’t dislike

people who drive other makes, but if you are staying and hap-pen to drive a Chevy you will be given the special Ford guest room as a reminder of the hosts’ passions.

Over the years the couple have indulged their rodding and dragracing passions, driving the famous Mustang. Recently a stunning T-bucket has been added to the collection.

The 1969 Mustang Convertible has been in the couple’s ownership for 27 years and she is still a reliable street car and rides as smooth as ever. It features the unusual addition of a turbocharger.

She was drag raced in the 1980’s with a a best time of 12.8s at 110mph and has won many trophies along the way. She has also been driven to numerous events, including conventions, car shows, South Island runs, Christmas Parades, Hops, cruise nights etc.

This engine was built in 1984 and most of the parts were hand crafted as turbo’s were not an ‘off the shelf ’ option. The 302ci Windsor V8, twin turbo-charged engine, with turbo cam, forged pistons, ported heads, nitrous oxide injection and 780 Holley carb is estimated to develop about 440kW. It runs a 9” Ford diff with four spider LSD and 2.75/1 gear ratio.

Taking over drag racing du-ties in 1990 was their 1981 Mustang Drag Car.

She runs a Ford SVO 498ci V8 with Pro-Stock Wedge heads, 1050 Dominator carb, lightweight crank, Crower Rods, Roller Cams, Jesel Rockers through a Turbo 400 built by A1 USA running a Ford 9” diff with 4.56 gears.

Fastest time to date is 9.360 at 146mph.For t past two years the Olsens have raced in the Dragmas-

ters Series, racing against the Imports at Meremere. The Mustang has come out on top on both occasions and

the couple are looking forard to a threepeat at the next Mer-emere Dragmasters meeting on January 5, 2008.

Recently at the National Mustang Conven-tion in Hamilton the car came third

overall in Competition Class at the show, plus it’s also won many other trophies.

Newest addition is the 1923 T-Bucket running a

351 Windsor V8 with Cleveland heads, with a 671 Blower and Twin

Carbs. The car has been stored for many years so the Olsens are

currently preparing her for certifi cation, and hope for have this old girl restored to her previous beauty some time in the near future and can’t wait to be part of the hot rodding scene.

TE AWAMUTU Rod and Custom Club members Ron and Rose Olsen are passionate Ford owners who indulge their passions for rodding and dragracing with three awesome machines.

Keep vehicles out of sand dunesEnvironment Waikato is appealing for motorcycles and

four-wheel drive vehicles to be kept out of sand dunes on the region’s West Coast beaches for safety and en-

vironmental reasons. The appeal follows a number of incidents in recent years,

including: A woman being injured when run over by a four-wheel drive

while sunbathing in dunes at Raglan A motorcycle leaping a sand dune at Port Waikato nearly

crashing down on top of a 7-year-old girl playing with her friends

An accident where two motorcyclists suffered facial and leg injuries, and had to be airlifted out, after colliding at Ruapuke Beach.

The problems are most marked at Port Waikato, Kawhia and Ruapuke, said Environment Waikato’s community education facilitator Sam Stephens.

“Motorcycles and four-wheel drives in sand dunes are a potential recipe for disaster, particularly as more people take to the beaches over summer.

“The vehicles also damage the sensitive ecosystems on the dunes, threatening the stability of beaches, and can hurt birdlife.

“Our message to motorcyclists and four-wheel drive owners is simple: please stay out of the dunes because of the risk you present to people and the environment.

“We understand completely that using the dunes can be fun or convenient but the actual and potential costs are just too high.”

Mr Stephens said people were able to make complaints to police about anyone using bikes or four-wheel drives in a dangerous manner, and could also approach their local coun-cils if they were concerned about environmental damage by vehicles.

“We advise people to get as many identifying details as they can to help police and councils follow up their complaints.

“Local councils can also provide motorcyclists, four-wheel drive owners and the public with further advice on what the specifi c rules are in their areas concerning vehicles on the coast.

“We need a common sense response from motorcyclists and four-wheel drive owners. Different areas have varying rules about vehicles in coastal areas but all vehicle users are obliged to act in a safe way and need to be sensitive to their environmental impact.

“Our appeal is not about trying to clamp down on people’s fun - rather it’s asking everyone to take responsibility for keep-ing beachgoers safe and protecting the coastal environment we all enjoy so much as New Zealanders.”

Go off-road with Nissan

Otorohanga’s Excelsior Nissan wants to take you off road next year - and they’ve hired the country’s best 4WD instructor to show you how.

Pete Ritchie is New Zealand’s leading provider of 4WD training through his company Natural Instincts.

He teams up with Excelsior Nissan for Drive Days 2008 on Tuesday, January 29 and Wednesday, January 30 where drivers can hone their off road skills, as well as test the ca-pabilities of Nissan’s range of 4WD vehicles - Navara STX, Patrol, Pathfi nder and X-Trail.

The event is being held on Hangatiki East Road, Otoro-hanga between 8.30am and 4.30pm at no cost to registered participants. Excelsior Nissan is also putting on BBQ food and refreshments.

There will also be a full range of Nissan SUVs and utes on display.

Anyone wishing to book a session is welcome to contact Merv or Grant at Excelsior Nissan (07) 873 8066.

NATURAL INSTINCTSPete Ritchie thinks he was conceived in a 4WD. He says

it the only way he can explain why he’s never found far away from one.

Born and raised in rural New Zealand, he has always had a love affair with 4WD vehicles and as soon as he was old enough to drive he spent all his spare time exploring the ‘out-back’ of New Zealand.

He admits he made plenty of mistakes in the early days - but learnt from those and soon fi gured out there is a right and wrong way to do things.

His job took him around the country, so he joined 4WD clubs as he went and learnt everything he could from the experienced campaigners.

He soon became involved in the professional world of off-road driving through the fl edgling ‘Off Road NZ’ as their fi rst employee.

Ritchie helped them develop sustainable tracks and guid-ing methods and assisted in running teambuilding activities. Among many accolades Off Road NZ went on to win the New Zealand Tourism board’s Supreme Business Award.

His passion to develop his instructing skills led Ritchie eventually to be noticed by Land Rover New Zealand, where he went on to develop and run training courses, front a video on driving methods and environmental considerations. During this time he had the privilege to travel to England as a guest to complete the Instructors and Specialists training courses run by Land Rover at Eastnor castle.

He left to form his own company - Natural Instincts - which specialises in off road driver training and 4WD Tag-a-Long Adventures.

This has opened new doors, including demonstrating, deal-er training, hosting overseas guests on 4WD adventures and consulting with companies on outdoor adventures and tours.

Lancer Evo 10 packs punchBy Dean Taylor

I’ve wondered in the past who would be likely to buy a new

Mitsubishi Evo - not who would want one - but who would have $80,000 for what appears to be a young person’s car.

I don’t have the an-swer here - but maybe Mitsubishi does.

The new Lancer Evolu-tion X is about $15,000 cheaper than the previous model - but the new Lancer design means you get an awesome looking and per-forming package.

Born in 1993, the fi rst Evolution had 184kW of power and 309Nm of torque. Over the years the numbers have tweeked to a maximum 216kW and 407Nm in the previous model.

The X’s power from it’s two litre, turbocharged, DOHC MIVEC engine is back to 206kW, but the torque is way up at 422Nm - and that gives it some go.

I drove Te Awamutu Motors fi ve speed manual black beast and was more than impressed with what

it could do - but also how refi ned and driveable it was as an everyday road car. There is also a six speed automatic version.

It’s true the Evo will go like a rocket and the 4WD system and beefed up sus-pension means it sticks to the road like glue.

But it isn’t the hard, bumpy, sports car type ride

expected - it is fi rm, but not unpleasant. This is a car you could drive for hours and just enjoy the ride.

That is probably an important factor when you consider the age group likely to be able to afford one.

I thought the Evo would have sounded a bit better - but then it does have to

comply with modern ex-haust regulations. However I would have been happy with a bit more burble at cruising speeds and a bit more roar under accelera-tion.

The fi nish and interior is fantastic. Nothing is over the top - but it is functional and purposeful.

Mitsubishi have taken

what I have already de-scribed in the previous DriveBy as a terrifi c looking car and made it even bet-ter - with bonnet intakes, body kit and spoiler and twin exhausts to make it stand out.

And yet it is a roomy, four door, fi ve seat sedan that is just as happy around town as on the open road.

For V8 Supercar driver, Greg Murphy, motor racing is no holiday. But he is sure that all

motorists getting ready for summer holi-days can gain a lot by using the same principles that are second nature for motorsport teams.

“There is just no way our Tasman Motorsport race team would go into any event without our documentation being up to date, and our cars prepared to the best of the abilities and profes-sionalism of the crew to maximize per-formance and safety,” says Murph.

“Our team management will have completed all the pre-race formalities, my family is secure knowing my safety is our team’s top priority, and I know team technicians will have prepared my race car to be reliable, and quick.

“My job then is to use my driving skills to get as many results as possible, and I can stay focused on this without having to worry that we may have for-gotten something - I don’t want to have to focus on anything other than the road when I am driving at any speed!”

For Murph, and the team at the Mo-tor Trade Association (MTA), it is no different for New Zealand motorists planning their own big event, summer holiday motoring.

Murph and MTA have compiled a checklist for motorists, designed to eliminate the risk of disrupted holidays, to provide the assurance of complet-ing journeys reliably and safely, and to provide maximum enjoyment for all the family.

“We have divided this checklist into two parts,” says Murph.

“The fi rst is all about what you, the

vehicle owner, has to take responsibility for to make sure that the essentials of vehicle registration, Warrant of Fitness, insurance will all be valid throughout the holiday period, and that will also include valid driving licences held by all family members and others likely to be driving the vehicle at holiday places visited.”

The second part of Murph’s MTA checklist covers those items which for most will be left in the hands of qualifi ed automotive technicians in well-equipped workshops.

“Just like the members of my pit-crew, these will be those sort of people you know you can trust. They will give you the facts and they will have a way of getting through to you in a way you can understand - and without surprises!”

“In my experience, MTA people only make promises they can keep, and your best interests will be their top priority - they have all committed to this as part of their qualifi cation for membership of this top-class motor industry group. Talk

to your MTA vehicle service technician about these items:T All fl uid and coolant levels

will need to be checked and inspect the radiator for damage or blockage. With the extra loads you will be car-rying, longer distances travelled, and with more open highway driving, this is where your vehicle could be found wanting.T An engine tune will pay divi-

dends for you in smoother acceleration and lower fuel consumption, and it will be wise to have your vehicle’s drive belts and hoses inspected, plus new oil and fi lters.T Good visibility is a vital contrib-

utor to safe driving. Now will certainly be a good time to get a new set of wiper blades, and good quality screen wash. Headlights should be checked out for optimum alignment, and taillight and indicator light operation also inspected.T Wheels, tyres, brakes and

suspension are critical to your driving safety, and you must not compromise in any of these areas. Wheel alignment and balance must be check for absolute accuracy, steering and suspension com-ponents inspected, and tyre condition and pressures will need to be checked. Your MTA technician will also inspect brake pads/shoes and discs.T Vital to the reliability of your ve-

hicle throughout your holiday is the bat-tery. Ask to have its condition checked - better to be safe than sorry!T And fi nally for your safety,

comfort and convenience, have the operation and condition of your seat-belts inspected, and the operation of airconditioning systems.

Les and the team wish you all safe motoring this season and a happy Christmas

New sales team at F&TTwo guys passionate about bikes

form the new sales team at Farm & Trail Motorcycles.

Manager Adam Boyd (left) comes with experience in sales and retail, as well as a huge interest in riding for fun and helping run bike events. Salesman Dean Broomham (right) has been involved in the industry almost all his adult life - and is keen to show he is a top New Zealand Cross Country rider.

Mr Boyd moved to Te Awamutu about a year ago to manage Otoro-hanga Goldpine. Previously he had been a key account manager at the Nelson head offi ce.

It was his passion for riding Yamaha bikes in competition for fun and helping run events, so others could enjoy the sport, that gave him a foot in the door to what he describes as ‘a dream job’.

Mr Boyd was part of the local FBR team alongside Farm & Trail owner Alan Hockly - so when a change in manage-ment took place recently Mr Boyd was on-hand to accept a new challenge. He says he loves retail and meeting people, and is passionate about bikes - so it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

He also says he is privileged to lead a really good team of experienced people with three great products - Yamaha, KTM and Polaris. His aim is to provide good quality bikes and professional service for all clients.

Mr Broomham also likes to compete, but he is aiming for the top level.

He started working for Valance Yamaha in Cambridge as an after-school job, then worked full time. He was then snapped up by Te Awamutu’s Peter

Glidden Honda and did his motorcycle mechanic apprenticeship and worked in sales before heading overseas.

For 10 years he lived in Canada, where he met and married his wife, and started a family. The family is loving be-ing in Te Awamutu.

Mr Broomham worked in motorcycle

sales and service, and was also briefl y selling cars. More importantly he was a Top 5 rider on the Pro Cross Country Enduro circuit until hampered by injury.

He is now recovering well and start-ing to get back on his KTM250EXE - aiming for Top 5 or better in New Zealand.
