Sherriff has been rewarded for a standout year during Bowls Australia’s Awards Night at the Park Hyatt, Melbourne, on Saturday, February 18.
The Australian superstar captured not one but two of the night’s major accolades, while state and national teammate Natasha Van Eldik secured the third.
After Van Eldik edged out Cabramatta’s Karen Murphy to be crowned Female Bowler of the Year, Sherriff claimed the fi rst of his trophies when he was announced as the Male Bowler of the Year.
Moments later, the 26-year-old was back on stage after securing the BCiB International Bowler of the Year award over Van Eldik and last year’s inaugural winner Mark Casey.
Having ended 2010 by claiming the World Champion of Champions title, the world number fi ve continued his rich vein of form on the international stage in 2011 with a dominate display against New Zealand at the Trans Tasman.
This was followed by a sublime performance at the Moama International series that assisted the home
nation secure an overall victory against old enemies England and Scotland.
The performances assured Sherriff of a position in the Australia v South Africa test series, with the green and gold contingent producing a whitewash of the series, dropping only four of the 24 games played against one of its fi ercest rivals, after the Springboks ended Australia’s gold medal hopes twice at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The defi ning moment in
Sherriff’s stellar year came at the 15 nation biennial Asia Pacifi c Championships where a powerful showing on the international stage saw him skip his fours team to gold and his triples to silver medals, in the process ensuring Australia of the overall winners’ and overall men’s trophies.
In a testament to his outstanding year, Sherriff secured 44 votes to fi nish 27 clear of his nearest rival, as voted by his peers.

Joe Marston of Umina is among
eight football players of various codes to have his visage placed on Australia Post’s latest series of commemorative stamps, naming him an Australian Legend.
Australia Post CEO Mr Ahmed Fahour said the 2012 Legends were chosen for their contribution to Australian sporting culture and for playing a vital role in shaping Australia as a great sporting nation.
Upon receiving the phone call informing him that he had been selected for the honour Mr Marston said “I really didn’t know what to say”.
“I thought I must have done something right and thought ‘well it’s a great honour to be selected in that category’.”
As the fi rst Australian to not only play for, but also reach the FA Cup fi nals with a British football club (Preston North End, 1954), FIFA considered Mr Marston to be a pioneer and standard-bearer of Australian soccer.
Seeking to revitalise Preston North End FC after their relegation to the second division of English football in 1949, a talent scout for the club had seen Mr Marston playing for Leichhardt-Annandale in Division 1 of the NSW State League, and said he was impressed enough to offer to fl y both Mr Marston and his wife Edith to England in order to trial for the team.
The club’s fortunes began to change in 1951 when Mr Marston was moved from the reserves into their starting lineup, eventually reclaiming their spot in the fi rst division in 1952 when they fi nished behind Arsenal.
After 196 consecutive matches and fi ve years with Preston North End, despite an offer of £80,000 to transfer to Arsenal, Mr Marston returned to his homeland in 1956, where he continued his pioneering
streak as the fi rst man to both captain and coach the Australian team, playing for the squad on 37 occasions in total.
Mr Marston was presented with a 24-carat gold replica of the 60 cent stamp on which he appears at the offi cial Australia Day lunch in Sydney.
Other accolades received by Mr Marston include the Order of the British Empire,
the Alex Tobin Medal, inductions into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame and the NSW Hall of Champions.
Mr Marston’s achievements are acknowledged by the A-League annually, when the Joe Marston Medal is awarded to the player of the match in that year’s grand fi nal.

The Central Coast Marlins won their
eighth consecutive game 5-3, defeating the Cronulla Sharks at Baseball Park, Springfi eld, on the weekend of February 18 and 19.
The win reassured the Marlins of their top spot on the ladder.
The Cronulla side jumped out to an early lead when they scored two runs in the fi rst inning, though this would be the only offense the Sydney-siders would mount, as Marlins’ starting pitcher Paul Anderson settled in to the game nicely.
Anderson threw for fi ve innings, striking out eight hitters along the way.
Returning from his duties
with the Sydney Blue Sox, recently named Rookie of the Year in the ABL, Aidan Francis took to the hill and dominated the Sharks’ hitter, completing four innings of work and striking out eight batters along the way.
The Marlins’ offense was slow to get started, scoring a lone run in the second inning to cut the defi cit in half.
Designated hitter, Scott Harrison, hit a single home run to tie the game in the fourth inning.
The game stayed level until the Marlins’ hitters started to fi re in the seventh inning, with a two-run home run to Moko Moanaroa, followed by consecutive hits to Tom O’Gorman, Dan Smith, Michael Ashton and Scott Harrison, who added
another run to take the score to 5-3, where it remained.
Offensive standouts were Scott Harrison and Tom O’Gorman, who each collected three hits.
It was a successful day for the Marlins Club as they won fi rst, second and third grade, as well as U18s and women’s.
Marlins win eight in a row

Steel Guiliana, A u s t r a l i a ’ s
National Forpark Formula 3 Champion, is preparing to take on the Formula 3 Gold Star for 2012, with Round One commencing at the Clipsal500 weekend in Adelaide during the first week of March.
Guiliana, from Terrigal, has just returned from Adelaide where he drove his new Mercedes Powered Dallara for the first time.
He said: “I am feeling confident.”
“The new car is a delight to drive.
“Ian Richards and the R-Tek Team have done a magnificent job preparing the Dallara in readiness for this season.
“We are looking forward to a great season of Motor Racing”.
The Italian designed and built Dallara is powered by a 2.0L Four-Cylinder engine producing approximately 230BHP (190kw) at 7,500RPM.
It’s mandated racing weight is 540kg; and it boasts a full Carbon Fibre chassis.
The Dallara runs a Six-Speed Sequential gearbox and special race controlled Kumho Slick Tyres.
These Formula 3 cars lap Phillip Island, for instance, in 1m24
seconds.That’s seven seconds
quicker than Casey Stoner’s Moto GP Honda and nine seconds up on a V8 Supercar.
The car will be flat for 60 seconds of that 84 second lap, touching the brakes only four times out of the 12 corners.
The average lap speed is 183km/hr.
Turn one is taken flat out at 257km/hr.
Round One, at Clipsal will see Guiliana on the track six times between Thursday, March 1, and Sunday, March 4, with practice through the streets of Adelaide on Thursday, with Qualifying and Race 1 on Friday, Race 2 Saturday and Sunday the Race 3 Feature Race.
Well laid foundations from the 2011 seasonm, which saw Guiliana win the inaugural Formula 3 Forpark Scholarship together with the Australian National Formula 3 Championship, have catapulted Steel into a professional racing career this year.
While formal s p o n s o r s h i p arrangements have yet to be announced, Steel is assured of a bright future.
Steel will be carrying children’s charity The Variety Club with him on his journey throughout his career and their mascot “Sheridan” will accompany him.
Formula 3 challenge about to start
by Peter HawkesTuggerah’s Kido Mingara Judo Club
returned from the ACT International Open Judo Championships with a brilliant result.
The club had six players compete who returned with seven medals, two gold, two silver and three bronze.
The ACT International Open Championships, held in Canberra, enjoyed participating teams from all States.
It was hotly contested as one of the most important National Points tournaments for the players that are seeking selection for this year’s International events including the Oceania Championship held later this year in Cairns.
Liam Yokoyama made it look easy, repeating his last years performance, this time in the new 60kg, U20 age division.
He dominated from the fi rst bout, winning all in fi ne style by full point [ippon] for the gold.
His seoinage [shoulder throw] was his mainstay, but he secured two bouts by submission holds.
Liam’s intense training preparation in Japan along with his natural talent really paid off.
This result coupled to next month’s Queensland Open, will determine a berth on the Oceania Team and has set him up as a strong contender for the event.
Coach Pete Acciari said: “At only 16, Liam backed up his performance in the tough adult Senior Men category by placing third, the fact that he only lost one bout narrowly against Australia’s Beijing Olympic rep shows he will be a top player in the future.”
Melinda Brown had a mixed day, running hot and
cold in some bouts in the 52kg divisions.
The lack of consistency cost her, having to settle for a bronze in the U20 and a fi fth in Seniors.
Both Liam and Melinda are selected in the prestigious JFA National Talent Scholarship Program placing in the top 20 juniors of the Nation.
During this year, they will benefi t immensely from having been selected on the program which aims to develop young judoka for a future Olympics.
They will train several weeks at the AIS, travel to Japan and represent Australia.
Caroline Hain entered the 48kg Cadet and U20 categories.
After a year’s recovery from a serious injury, she found the going tough but improved from bout to bout.
Her winning comeback was only stopped in the fi nals having to settle for silver in both divisions.
Angelina Yokoyama had a hard challenge just coming up from the girl divisions.
The draw wasn’t kind to her, but nevertheless, she forged through the repechage and earned herself a bronze in the 48kg Cadets.
Neeson Naidoo from Wyong reaped the rewards of a very committed training year by applying his strong new throwing skills.
He blasted his way through the preliminaries with quality [ippon] throws.
Only in the fi nals did he have to extend himself to secure a win by minor score.
Neeson showed his potential and is defi nitely to be watched in the future.
In fact all players are well on track and training hard for this year’s Nationals to be held in June in the ACT.

Nine hundred children took
part in the fi rst leg of the annual Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon at Woy Woy on Sunday, January 22.
Sporting stars Kurt Gidley, Nicole Hackett, Kristina Hagberg and Benn Harradine along with Central Coast Mariners players awarded medals to all the participants aged between seven and 15 after they completed the specially designed kids swim, bike and run course.
In the spirit of non-competitive enjoyment, no placings or times were recorded.
According to post-event surveys conducted with parents over the 13 years during which the event has been held, kids who participated got a major boost to their self esteem because of the “everyone’s a winner” event philosophy and were more likely to continue doing physical activity after the event.
Newcastle Knights 2011 Player of the Year and
TRYathlon ambassador Kurt Gidley said the event enabled children of all sporting abilities and fi tness levels to have a try in an encouraging and supportive environment without the pressure of competition.
“Everybody had a fantastic time and it was great to see so many
kids getting involved and enjoying a fun day out with family and friends,” said Gidley.
“The TRYathlon isn’t about getting the fastest time or winning the race but is about taking part, having fun and being healthy.
“Everyone who participates gets a medal
and goes home a winner.”Now in its 14th year in
Australia, the TRYathlon includes ten events held across the country from January to May and will benefi t an estimated 16,000 Australian children who will participate this year.

Shelly Beach Golf Club held
a benefi t event on Friday, January 27, for self-employed mobile fi shmonger and long-term club member Mick “The Fisho” Lachmund.
Mick was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus, liver and lymph system in December last year.
With 180 players in attendance, the golf day was booked beyond the club’s normal capacity of 144.
Of the turnout, Mr Lachmund’s mother Nellie said: “It was absolutely overwhelming to see so
many people there to support Mick”.
“As family, we know that Mick is a beautiful person, and it was heartening to see that so many others also know him for the great person that he is and were so willing to donate so generously.”
Through a combination of sponsored holes, donation of staff tips and discounted course hire, the club reported that it managed to raise $49,287 on the day.
“It is a great relief to Mick not to have to worry so much about his fi nances so that he can concentrate on beating this disease that he’s dealing with,” said Ms Lachmund.

Central Coast M a r i n e r s
returned to their winning ways with a dominant 2-0 triumph over Wellington Phoenix at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, February 18.
Tomas Rogic’s second sublime strike in as many weeks gave the Mariners the lead their fi rst half dominance deserved early in the second half before Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk headed home in the 83rd minute to ensure the Mariners wouldn’t be pegged back by Ricki Herbert’s men in the fi nal stages of the entertaining encounter.
From the outset, the home side was full of running, and this attacking approach nearly netted the opener in just the second minute.
Rogic showed great skill to round Wellington goalkeeper Mark Paston and tee up Michael McGlinchey but the Scottish-raised, New Zealand international’s shot was well saved.
Soon after, the Mariners ought to have taken the lead when in an amazing passage of play they had four chances to beat Paston, but were unable to do so.
Playing in his fi rst match in Australia, English striker Sutton looked promising, holding the ball up well and
fi ring off shots when the opportunity arose.
It took 21 minutes but the Phoenix’s fi rst shot on goal was a spectacular effort from Chris Greenacre.
The striker threw his whole body into the volley but was unable to keep his strike down.
Phoenix custodian Mark Paston was arguably the busiest player on the pitch; however, everything that the Mariners threw at the talented shot-stopper he managed to palm away.
Twice the experienced goalkeeper thwarted Adam Kwasnik who was proving to be a handful for the Wellington defence.
After the interval, it was Rogic, the name on the lips of every fan after his scintillating performance against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park the week before, who opened the scoring.
Picking the ball up in midfi eld, Rogic’s curling left foot shot left Paston with no chance as it nestled in the corner of the net.
And while Mariners custodian Justin Pasfi eld was forced into a sharp reaction save from a strong Chris Greenacre header in the 58th minute, it was really the only main threat the visitors managed to conjure against a stern Central Coast backline.
As the clock wound down and Graham Arnold’s team continued to attack, Patrick Zwaanswijk sealed

Post match, a pleased Mariners boss Arnold said it was the way his team performed on a diffi cult surface that satisfi ed him most.
“It’s more about the performance and I thought the football performance tonight was fi rst class,” Arnold said.
“It’s great to see us play like that again.
“I thought that our football performance tonight was what I was looking for.
“That’s the way we want to play, short passes, and it was on a diffi cult surface, but overall I couldn’t be happier about the way the boys played.”
Quizzed about the impact of new recruit John Sutton, Arnold said he thought the burly marksman fi tted in well
with the team unit.“I was very happy with his
performance, I knew what I was getting and the type of player I wanted to give us something totally different to what we’ve got,” he said.
“I thought his performance was excellent.”

McDonald, a regular for North Queensland Fury in their fi nal campaign in the Hyundai A-League, is yet to make his fi rst team debut for the Mariners but said that with the structures in place at the club he knows he is progressing.
“I feel I’ve improved a great deal even though I’m not playing (in the fi rst team),” McDonald said.
“Graham (Arnold) has also pushed me on and showed me DVDs on what to do; position wise, and tactically wise.”
McDonald has been a regular member of the Mariners National Youth League (NYL) team this season, scoring frequently from left midfi eld to help the junior Yellow and Navy to fi rst place on the competition ladder with just two games to play.
The dynamo said that it would be terrifi c to secure a NYL winners medal.
“It would be pretty deserving, not for me only, but for the young boys as well because they’ve done very well to step up, but also with the older boys coming down,” he said.
Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said the one-season contract extension for McDonald was a just reward for his commitment and professionalism shown in training.
“Brad’s done extremely well since he came to the club,” Arnold said.
“Like all of our young boys, and he is young, it
will take a bit of time to get used to the structure that we play and the intensity that we play at (and) for him to understand the tactical discipline to play in the fi rst team.
“(But) he’s improved that enormously over the season, and it’s a great signing again for the club to sign one of our better youngsters.
“He’s obviously got a lot of pace and he’s got a good left foot on him.
“It’s a matter of keeping his intensity up for 90 minutes in defence as well as in attack.
“You can see a huge improvement in him.
“We expect big things from him next year.”
Central Coast Mariners chairman Mr Peter Turnbull said that McDonald’s re-signing reinforced the Mariners’ commitment to youth development.
“Brad is the perfect fi t for the Central Coast Mariners with his professional attitude, versatility and ethics,” Turnbull said.
“He is a young lad with a future in a club that gives young guys a go.
“He was a regular for the Fury and, despite not getting a fi rst team spot at the moment, he adds to much quality and depth to our squad.”

Gosford Dragons coach Mark
Yule has been given the chance to guide the Men’s First Division team into the Premier League in time for the club’s 50th season after fi ve years of moulding the club’s Women’s Premier League side into one of the most successful teams in the state.
Recruitment has been impressive with former Wyoming and Umina Premier League striker Marc Tarring signing on as player/fi tness coach and, under the watchful eye of Yule, has been putting the mix of youth and experience through an arduous pre-season since before Christmas.
“I’ve had a wonderful fi ve years with a great bunch of girls and I’m really excited about that success hopefully continuing with the guys,” said Yule.
“I’ve been really impressed with their commitment and attitude to training and, while the squad is still very much a work in progress, I’m delighted where we are at at the moment.”
In moving on, Yule has passed the Women’s Premier League baton over to Rob Farthing, who, along with assistant Bill Birch, will be looking to replicate the success the team has created since winning the League and Grand Final double in 2010.
Farthing was behind the team’s Premier League promotion in 2006 and has
also had experience as head coach of the club’s men’s senior squad.
Gosford City president Peter Huxley said it was not only the club’s fl agship sides that would be taking high hopes into the new season.
“We have a wonderful crop of juniors right through from U5s to U16s and everyone involved has subscribed to what the club is all about,” said Huxley.
“There’s also a great culture in all of our All Age and Over Age teams and, off the fi eld, we’ve been kicking goals to prepare for a successful season both on and off.
“Indeed, the club has formed partnerships with several well-known local businesses as sponsors, including new Overall Club Sponsor 3S Lighting, Men’s First Division Major Sponsor The Valley Tavern, Niagara Park and Women’s Premier League Major Sponsor Enviroarch Australia.
“We are delighted to have such wonderful partners off the fi eld.
“They are instrumental in helping us achieve the success we are aiming for and hopefully our success can benefi t them.
“We are hoping to make these long-term relationships,” he added.
Thanks to its sponsors Hebel, Dicker Motors Smash Repairs, North Shore Timber and Hardware, Nimrod Plastics, KFC Wyoming and Zaia Architects, this year the club will be supplying every coach with brand new training equipment, including one training ball for every two players per team.

Sea FM has committed as
official sponsor
of the Women’s Premier League in 2012.
The league will now
be known as the ‘Sea FM Women’s Premier League’.
Daniel Drysdale, Sponsorship Manager of Sea FM, says this is an exciting time for the two groups.
“Sea FM is very
excited to continue our partnership with Central Coast Football in 2012.
“We have enjoyed a great relationship over the past 12 months, promoting the growth of such a great sport on the Central Coast,” Drysdale said.
“We look forward to partnering with Central Coast Football again this year and look forward to some great partnered initiatives to help the clubs; the players and anyone who loves to see sport on the Central Coast
grow. “The women’s premier
league continues to be an area of growth with the inclusion of more teams this year and Sea FM is extremely proud to be the major sponsor,” he said.
Central Coast Football General Manager, Peter Townsend is pleased at the continuation of this partnership.
“Central Coast Football welcomes the continuation of the partnership with Sea FM for the 2012 season.
“Women’s football is the fastest growing female sport in Australia and this partnership will lift the profile of Women’s football even further.”
Sea FM will be broadcasting live from the Hill and Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup Finals scheduled to be played on March 18th in which Pluim Park will also host a Football Fun Day to launch the 2012 season.
Womens Premier League off to fl ying start by Val Bridge
The 2012 football season got off
to a fl ying start with the commencement of the Hill and Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup round one played out last Saturday, February 18, at Pluim Park.
The Hill and Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup will be a round robin format providing all participating teams with a minimum of three games.
The highest ranked teams within their pool would progress into a fi nal series.
Principal of Hill and Co Lawyers Mr Peter Hill said: “I am pleased to once again be a major sponsor of the pre-season cup.”
“It is a worthwhile competition for both women and men and well run by Central Coast Football.”
Central Coast Football general manager Mr Peter Townsend said: “It’s great news to see Hill and Co Lawyers once again sponsoring this event and I look forward to the continuing support of Hill and Co Lawyers in building the future of football here on the Coast.”
Prize money will be divvied up between the winners of the men’s fi rst grade competition of $3000, the women’s winner getting $1500 and the men’s fi rst grade runners up getting $500.
Avoca Womens premier league stalwart player
Gabby Bowles said she felt the inequity of prize money was nothing new.
“Whilst players really appreciate sponsorship of the event It seems wherever one looks in sport the female competition receives less than their male counterparts for doing exactly the same.
“Seeing as no prize money has been allocated to the women’s runner up one wonders at the logic in this thinking when it comes to deciding who wins what.
“This is even more curious seeing as the growth in women’s football on the Coast is unprecedented, why can’t it be $2000 to winners of both and $500 to runners up of both?” Bowles added.
This year, Reserve Grade will be added to the competition in the Men's division.
Mens Central Coast Cup
resultsby Alistair Kennedy
Summary:
Nine of the 10 matches in the fi rst round of the Mens Hill & Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup have gone to script, with Premier League clubs defeating their Division One rivals in matches played over the weekend.
The only upset came at Pluim Park on Saturday evening where Division One club, Gosford, defeated Kanwal 3-0 with the goals scored by Marc Tarring, Dylan Haine and Tom Carbone, all coming in the second half.
Star of the round was striker Matt Lawrence, who scored all six of Killarney District’s goals in their 6-1 win over Ourimbah at Budgewoi FC.
Lawrence, a former Central Coast representative player, has rejoined his former junior club for the 2012 season, after stints with Terrigal (2010) and Kincumber (2011).
The season began badly for the two teams who were relegated from Premier League last year, with Wyong being thrashed 8-0 by Berkeley Vale, with Troy Mumford bagging a hat-trick, and Kincumber going
down 7-1 to Budgewoi. The eagerly anticipated
Peninsula Derby between Umina and Southern-Ettalong, the fi rst meeting between the two clubs since Southern’s relegation in 2008, was the highlight of Sunday’s matches at Pluim Park.
A fi rst-half double to striker Chris Powell gave Umina a 2-0 half-time lead, extended to 3-0 by Josh Schumann before Southern a late consolation goal for a fi nal score of 3-1.
Despite the return of three former CCFC First Grade players, Wyoming struggled to defeat a determined Woongarrah side.
The match was scoreless with 15 minutes to play before Wyoming’s class eventually overcame the northern club’s tenacious defence and the fi nished strongly for a 3-0 win.
In the other matches, The Entrance were stretched by their Division One rivals, Toukley, before running out 2-1 winners; East Gosford downed Terrigal 3-1; while each of the newly-promoted Premier League clubs won, Avoca defeating Woy Woy
3-0 and Doyalson coming back from a 2-0 defi cit to beat Kariong 3-1.

Summary:
In a tight match at Pluim Park, Killarney and Gosford played out a scoreless draw.
This was the much anticipated match of the round, which saw the all-conquering Gosford team do battle with a young Killarney outfi t.
Despite the heat, the match was fi erce and with both teams hitting the woodwork.
Kanwal prevailed in a tight match defeating Kincumber 2-1.
With Kanwal looking to join the Premier League in 2012, the win was a perfect start to their Central Coast Cup campaign.
A young Umina team defeated Avoca 1-0 in a tight affair.
After a tight fi rst half, the scores were locked at 0-0 at half time.
Both sides had several chances; however, with fi ve minutes on the clock,
it was Umina who took the opportunity with some creative footwork, beating the keeper and putting one in the back of the net.
Kariong, reigning champions of 2011, put on a dominant display defeating The Entrance 4-1.
The Entrance, starting
the match with 10 players, were always facing a mountainous task, and Kariong had the perfect start heading into half time in a 3-0 lead.
To The Entrance’s credit, they pulled back a goal early in the second half; however, they simply ran out of legs in the end.
Doyalson ran out 4-2 winners in their fi rst round clash against Tuggerah, in a match that was a lot tighter than the scoreline suggests.
East Gosford, having not been sighted in the Premier League for a few years, defeated an under-strength Wyoming team 4-2.
The match looked headed to a draw with 10 minutes to go until full time; however, East Gosford had other ideas, banging in two quick goals to defeat the Wyoming team and shoot straight to the top of their pool.

Toukley Cricket Club has been
named the 2011-12 winner of the Glenn Rowlands Shield after their defeat of Narara in the U21 Grand Final at Mt Penang on Sunday, February 19.
Toukley captain Dave Molan won the toss and sent Narara in to bat.
He struck fi rst with a wicket in the fi rst over.
Narara never recovered from this early setback and wickets fell steadily, thanks to tightly controlled bowling and some unfortunate choices of shots by dismissed batsmen.
Only Riley Clifton put up some resistance with a hard-fought 18.
The Toukley bowlers shared the wickets with Tom Keil taking 3/24, Brodie King 2/0, Michel Bell 2/10 and Dave Molan 2/16.
The innings were highlighted by some superb ground fi elding which left Narara dismissed in the 26th over for 67.
Narara’s bowlers, led by captain Michael Shelley and Jason Buckley, tried hard but Toukley batted calmly and reached the target in the 25th over thanks to a controlled innings of 48 not out from James McCombie.
The wicket-keeper/batsman was named man of the match for his batting, two good catches, and a tidy display behind the stumps.
The weather was kind, the pitch was excellent and good bowling from both
sides made it diffi cult to score runs.
Like all cricket this summer, the U21 competition was affected by weather, but there were many bright young stars showing their talents through the season.
Some of the highlights included Ryan James of Terrigal’s 140 against Doyalson, Ian Slatcher of Terrigal’s 7/31 also against Doyalson, James McCombie’s seven catches for Narara, Kyle Jordan of Narara’s 5/17 in the semi fi nal against Mountains, and the sportsmanship and spirit displayed by all the young cricketers.

The 2012 Bowls Central Coast/
Zone 15 Major Fours and President’s Reserve Fours Championships both attracted a large fi eld of teams.
Both divisions were divided into four sections each.
With 196 players in the Major Fours, the sectional rounds winners were Avoca Beach in Section One, Terrigal in Section Two and Ettalong in Section Three and Four.
Run in parallel with the Majors, the 140 players in the President’s Reserves fought out their sectional rounds with Halekulani winning Section 1, Woy Woy Section 2, Umina Section 3 and another Ettalong team winning Section 4.
This set the scene for a day of bowls at Ettalong Beach Memorial Bowling Club on Saturday, January 28.
The semi-fi nals took place in the morning, while the fi nals waited until after lunch.
The morning semis saw big wins in the Majors for Terrigal over Avoca Beach 26-5 and for Aron Sherriff’s Ettalong team over their fellow club mates, led by Danny McNeilly 24-4.
The President’s Reserves
semis were closer with Bruce Raynor’s Ettalong team victorious over Umina 22-12, forcing Herby Lach’s Halekulani team to come from behind during the closing stages to snatch a one shot win 17-16 from Woy Woy.
The crowd was not disappointed in the fi nals as Aron Sherriff skipped his Ettalong team to an early lead against David Neilsen’s Terrigal team until end seven.
Terrigal then started to
fi re and eventually hit the lead by one shot at end 17, however, Ettalong scored four shots to two over the last four ends, allowing them to take the Major Fours Championship by one shot.
In the President’s Reserve Fours fi nal, Herby Lach’s Halekulani team had another nail-biter, this time trailing Woy Woy until the 20th end when they levelled the score-line at 18-18, then took the last end to win 20-18.

Everglades Country Club’s golf and
bowls stalwart the late Don Leggett A.M will be honoured with a memorial bowls tournament held over two evenings from 6pm on Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14.
The tournament, which will showcase the cream of the bowlers in the state, is in recognition of Don’s fi nal benevolent action in providing for the supply and installation of the lighting of the two front
grass greens at Everglades Country Club.
Don was a councillor of Gosford Council from 1974-1983, deputy shire president from 1974-1977, shire president from 1977-1980 and the fi rst mayor from 1980-1982 as well as being involved in many community activities on and around the Peninsula.
“This prestigious tournament is a just recognition of the outstanding service to the community and to Everglades Country Club by a real hero of the Peninsula, which is testifi ed to by the outstanding qualities of the bowlers who have indicated they will participate
on the tournament over the two nights,” said Everglades Country Club Men’s Bowls Section senior vice president Mr Peter Arnold.
Many dignitaries from local government, Woy Woy Rugby League, the Ocean Beach Surf Club and other Peninsula community organisations, who hold high regard for Don’s memories and achievements, are expected to attend this tournament.
As well as being a benefactor to Everglades, along with his wife Val, Don was a competitive golfer and a club champion bowler in all categories of the game.

Sherriff is on track to win another Central Coast/Zone 15 Grand Slam following a win in the Zone Pairs, partnered with Tony Laguzza at Avoca Beach Bowling Club on Sunday, February 12.
This followed his win in the Zone Fours two weeks earlier.
However, winning the pairs was not plain sailing for the champion bowler.
Sherriff and Laguzza were lucky to win their Section, after they found three shots on the last end in order to draw the match against Tony Scott and Grant Spurway of The Greens.
They eventually won on an extra-end tie-breaker.
The semi-fi nal on the morning of Saturday, February 11, against Avoca Beach’s Garry Macfayden and Tony Shoebridge was the closest of matches and fi nished 20-all on the 20th end.
On the last end,
Macfayden drew a toucher with his fi rst bowl and it remained the shot until Sherriff’s last bowl.
Sherriff played the bowl of the day with his last bowl, disturbing the jack to be one up.
Laguzza, who had played brilliantly all throughout the
match, could not retrieve the situation with his last bowl.
In the other semi-fi nal, there was a similarly exciting fi nish, with the scores tied 13-all with just one end to play.
Halekulani’s Carl Collins drew two shots on the fi nal end, earning his partner
Paul Villata and himself a victory over the highly fancied Bruce Jewell and Peter Freestone of Terrigal.
The fi nals were started on the Saturday afternoon but play was suspended until Sunday after only fi ve ends due to rain.
Sunday morning’s fi nal of the Major Pairs saw Aron Sherriff and Tony Laguzza trailing 2 to 8 early in the match against the Halekulani duo of Carl Collins and Paul Villata.
Laguzza began to play immaculate draw bowls and Collins and Villata were given just one more shot which allowed Sherriff and Laguzza to close out the match.
The fi nal of the Senior Pairs was contested by two pairs from The Greens and The Entrance.
In a close match, John Ellison and Bill Constantine were victors over their club mates Neil Pombart and Peter Redman.
It was a good win for Bill following his win of the last Zone event of 2011, the Champion of Champion Pairs.

Aron Sherriff has proceeded to the quarter-fi nals (at the time of publication) of the Australian Open at the Darebin International Sports Centre after he defeated Melbourne bowls co-ordinator and former world
champion, Todd Simmons in an edge of your seat thriller.
Simmons raced to a 10-4 fi rst set win in eight ends but looked a little uneasy when the tables were turned, with the second set mirroring the fi rst, but the in-form Sherriff had all the shots in his arsenal to claim the tie-break 2-1.
“I knew it was going to be tough against Toddy, he’s an Australian rep and a quality
player,” Sherriff said after prevailing.
“I played really well the fi rst set, I didn’t think I dropped off too much but he picked up his game in the second set and there was some big bowls played in the tie-break by both of us, so 2-1 to me was very pleasing.
“I can’t feel it I suppose it is a good position to be in if people are trying extra hard to beat you, I fi nd that
a positive.“If they’re trying too hard
to beat me then maybe that plays into my hands as well.
Casey and Sherriff were joined by Australian teammates Sean Baker and Nathan Rice, with both prevailing in their tie-breaks, while defending champion Leif Selby and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Wayne Turley both advanced in straight sets.

Ourimbah - Lisarow RSL
Bowling Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Saturday, February 18, with a luncheon and a social game of bowls for 75 members and guests.
Among the offi cial guests were RNSWBA fi nance director Mr Ron King, Zone 15 State Councillor Doug Rose, Bowls Central Coast president Mr Kevin Dring and treasurer Mr Albert Heath.
Club secretary Tony Pearce was Master of Ceremonies and he gave everyone an interesting and informative overview of the Club’s history.
It all started with a group playing indoor bowls in a shed on the corner of Dog Trap Rd and the Pacifi c Highway.
The Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Men’s Bowling Club was fi rst formed in 1960 and affi liated with the Royal NSW Bowling Association on August 31, 1960.
The Club room in those days, where they held functions and meetings, was in part of the old Produce Store which eventually became the Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Club premises.
The Club has gone through many development stages over the years with members’ facilities and comfort always the major
criteria.In 1974, they were the
fi rst Central Coast Bowling Club to win a State Pennant, a feat many other Clubs are still yet to achieve.
Club identity and now Club patron Clancy Preston was a member of this historic team and he was in attendance at the luncheon to recall the memories and share the Club’s success with his grandson Dane Preston who was a member of the victorious side who won the Bowls Central Coast Grade 5 Pennant in 2011.
During the luncheon, Ron King presented RNSWBA Merit Badges to Bill Davison, Laurie Jones, Tie Bars to Chris Walker, Viv Trusler and Ladies Brooches to Patricia Braham and Jenny Wastell for their outstanding services to the Club.
MrKing also made a special presentation on behalf of the RNSWBA of a silver salver to Bowling Club President Brian Braham in commemoration of the Club’s 50th anniversary.
Mr Dring also presented Bowls Central Coast Merit Badges to John Martin, Noel Preston Tie Bars to Tony Pearce, Wayne Poulton and Ladies Brooches to Margaret Sohier and June Littlefi ed.
With the 2012 pennant competition about to start, Ourimbah-Lisarow is keen to build upon its proud history and competitive spirit.

(PLC) and Gosford Olympic Pool will play host to some of New Zealand’s Olympic hopefuls over the next week.
The squad, currently in Australia following the NSW Open Swimming Championships held earlier this month, will base themselves on the Central Coast until Friday, February 24.
In preparations for their London 2012 campaign, the squad will be working hard in the gym and pool facilities of the PLC.
They also held a combined training session with the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s Elite Swim Squad at Gosford Pool on Saturday, February 18.
The New Zealand squad boasts past Olympians including Corney Swanepoel who is currently preparing for what will be his third Olympics and Melissa Ingram, a bronze medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Gosford Council’s Manager of Open Space and Leisure Services Mr Phil Moore said that hosting the squad was a real recognition of the aquatic facilities available to the community.
“It is a pleasure to be hosting the New Zealand Swimming Squad at the PLC and Gosford Olympic Pool.
“Having Olympic and Commonwealth medallists training here is testimony to the quality of the facilities we have here at the PLC.
“The squad will make use of our 50m Olympic pool, recovery pool, gym and hard court area while also being fi ve minutes from Umina and Ocean Beach for outdoor training,” said Mr Moore.
Mr Moore said it was great to be able to play a small role in each athlete’s preparation for London 2012.
“We hope that the squad’s time here on the Central Coast can in some way assist them in achieving their best and winning medals in London,” said Mr Moore.

Woy Woy Public School held its
swimming carnival earlier this year and according to principal Ms Ona Buckley all students performed well.
The new age champions for 2012 are Luke Brown and Tasha Oberlander in the juniors, Steven Collins and Chelsea White in the 11 years and Tom Wilson and Georgia Riley in the seniors.
Teacher Ms Kath Taylor
said the carnival was “a great community day”.
“It was so wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents sitting with their children and getting involved in the carnival.
“So many parents helped out, but a big thank you must go to Mr Gleisner and Mrs Gaffney for the use of their stopwatches.
“And haven’t we got a wonderful bunch of teachers, all pitching in and making the event run so smoothly,” she said.

Several Central Coast rowing
squads have left the Navy Australian Surf Rowers League Australian Open three day weekend event at Newcastle’s Stockton Beach with medals.
The Avoca Zulus won silver in the Women’s Masters 160+ Age Group, while the Terrigal Tofts came away from the Women’s Masters 180+ Age Group with a bronze.
The Avoca Tweakers
were the only team to enter the Masters 260+ age division; however, under new rulings from the Surf Life Saving Association a single entry now constitutes an event, which allowed the Tweakers to walk away with a gold medal for their efforts.
Races were of 400 metres in length, and squads were grouped according to the aggregate age of their members (four rowers and one sweep).
The Masters was the maiden event of the weekend, kicking off on Friday, February 10, at 9am,
continuing with the fi nals at 11am and concluding with the medal ceremony at midday.
The Coast’s medallists saw the best weather of the day after conditions soured at 2:30pm.
Reserves, U23 Men and competitors in the Interstate Surf Boat Challenge all had to contend with reduced visibility, while a 30 to 40 knot north easterly wind and rough surf conditions challenged rowers which meant that many crews took a pounding from the seas.
The 2011-12 NAVY
Australian Surf Rowers League Series consists of 26 events around Australia from November 2011 to February 2012 and are held on some of the country’s premier beaches.
The Australian Surf Rowers League was born in NSW in 1992 as the International League of Australian Surfboat Rowers Inc. (ILOR) and currently has over 3000 members from over 260 clubs which make up over 450 crews competing nationally each year.

Police are appealing for
public assistance following a boating collision last month at Woy Woy where a man’s leg was severed.
At about 5.20pm on Friday, January 20, a 23ft speed boat was towing a wakeboarder in Woy Woy Bay.
At some stage, the boat turned sharply causing the 23-year-old wakeboarder to fall into the water.
The propeller of the vessel came into contact with the man which caused
severe lacerations.The man was rescued
from the water and the vessel was driven to the public wharf at Woy Woy where fi rst aid was administered by members of the public until ambulance offi cers arrived.
The local man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital where he underwent surgery including the amputation of his right leg.
The NSW Marine Area Command has urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 9320 7499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Empire Bay Public School held its
swimming carnival earlier this year and principal Mr Brad Lewis said he “was pleased to see the students fully engaged in the carnival, either competing in a variety of events or supporting their
team mates from the stands”.
“I was also delighted to see so many parents and carers in attendance, supporting our students and assisting staff in the running of the carnival.
“My congratulations go to all participating students and my best wishes go to those students who go on to further representation at a higher level.

The Central Coast junior
r e p r e s e n t a t i v e Rugby League teams kicked off their respective seasons with games against the Cronulla Sharks in cyclonic conditions at Woy Woy Oval, before heading south a week later to meet the grizzly Bears of North Sydney.
A minute’s silence preceded the kick off to round one of the Matthews Cup for U16s on Saturday, February 11.
A moving mark of respect afforded the memory of
former Ourimbah and Central Wyong three-quarter Keon Sbrugnera who had tragically drowned at The Entrance only days earlier.
The Central Coast Centurions Matthews Cup team is made up of players from Keon’s age division and many counted the former Wyong High student as a friend.
With lightning, thunder and torrential rain pinpointing the oval it was fi tting that a Storm junior from Gosford-Kariong, Callum Blinco, should cross for the game’s opening tries.
The lead up work for the fi rst try was supplied by fullback, Connor Watson, who caught the Sharks out with an incisive burst down
the left.The follow-up raid
climaxed with a wonderful cut out pass from dummy half by hooker, Jacob Little, which enabled Centurions winger Blinco to forcefully spear into the waterlogged Gnostic corner, prompting hearty applause from the parochial Peninsula crowd.
A great sideline conversion from Daniel “Bugs” Bell preceded Watson nabbing his own four-pointer, allowing the Centurions to head towards the welcoming shelter of half time leading 14-0.
The Central Coast boys continued to muscle up after the break, a heartfelt call of “Do it for Keon” acting as poignant motivation.
Skipper and man of the match Jacob Saifi ti crashed over from close range to extend the lead during the second half, before the visitors managed to cross for a late consolation, inking a fi nal scoreline of Central Coast 20, Cronulla 4.
The Coast boys played magnifi cently in trying conditions with standout efforts from Connor Watson, fi ve-eight Adam Keighran, forwards Jacob Saifi ti, Mitch Casson and Jacob Liddle, while left centre Jesse Bogle proved a handful until succumbing to an ankle injury.
A follow up 26-4 win over the Bears at TG Millner Field had the team sharing a slice of the competition lead.

The Central Coast Academy of
Sport will host the Cronulla Sharks for a pre-season training camp until Friday, February 24, which will include NSW captain Paul Gallen and new signing Todd Carney.
The Sharks kick-off the 2012 National Rugby League (NRL) season against the Wests Tigers at Leichardt Oval on Sunday, March 4, so the Central Coast training camp will be one of the last opportunities for players to impress head coach Shane Flanagan and push for a round one starting spot.
Mingara Recreation Club, the home of the Academy of Sport, will be the training base for the Sharks, who will utilise Mingara’s Gatorade
Regional Athletics Centre for on-fi eld sessions and will also make the most of the Mingara One Aquatic and Fitness Centre for swim recovery and gym sessions.
“It’s great for us to attract a high profi le NRL club such as the Sharks to our region and we are looking forward to hosting the team here at Mingara,” said Academy executive offi cer Mr Luke Tucker.
“One of our goals in 2012 is to attract more sporting teams to the Central Coast for training camps, so to have a team such as the Sharks leading the charge, we feel that’s a great start,” added Tucker.
The Central Coast Academy of Sport is encouraging local fans and rugby league supporters in general to get behind the Sharks as they prepare for the 2012 NRL season.

EDSAAC South Oval, home of
The Entrance Tigers Rugby League Club, will be out of action until mid-May to allow subsoil drainage work to be carried out, which would improve the playing surface.
The work is a partnership between Wyong Shire Council and The Entrance Leagues Club.
Despite losing their home ground advantage for the fi rst two months of the season, Leagues Club CEO Mark Chaffey said he couldn’t be happier.
“At the end of the day, the work being undertaken will defi nitely result in a huge improvement to the surface,” Mr Chaffey said.
“The work is for the benefi t of all the groups that use this oval, including rugby league, cricket and Oztag.
“We are defi nitely happy the work is being done and we know the oval will return in great shape.”
Council’s open space operations manager Mr Keith Ollier said the drainage work should allow for the fi eld to be ready for play and training a lot quicker following rain.
Works began late last week and are expected to take six weeks for the installation of drainage and a further six weeks to allow for turf recovery and rehabilitation of the playing surface.
Regular users have been relocated to other Council sports fi elds.

The Central Coast was represented
by twelve teams at the annual NSW State Cup held at Minto last weekend.
In what was the largest squad ever assembled, Central Coast were represented by almost 200 players.
The tournament was held in torrential downpours of rain as well as various puddles of mud.
The players though did not have their spirits dampened by the weather and showed great athleticism, sportsmanship and effort.
In what was the Central Coast’s most successful competition, three State Championships were brought back to the Coast.
The U13 Girls under the guidance of Kerry Allard were triumphant beating arch rivals St George 2-1 with Bianca Whitcher and Riley McKay starred for the team throughout the tournament.
The U13 Boys were also
crowned State champs with a 1-0 win against Nepean District in a tense Grand Final with Tom Starling and Aaron Heaven shining for the side.
In the fi nal match of the
tournament the U14 Boys wrapped up the success with a 2-0 victory over a strong St George outfi t, coach Mitchell Kurtz singling out Matthew Downey, Bailey Shiach-Wise and Michael
Miller for praise. Central Coast were
unlucky in a further two fi nals losing in drop off in both the U14 Girls and U16 Boys.
Both matches went deep into extra time and were both unlucky to lose after going through all previous matches unbeaten.
With all results taken into consideration Central Coast were runners up in 2012 to Nepean District in the Club Championships which showed the district’s strong stance in the sport.
Central Coast’s best players at the tournament were Sian George, Bianca Whitcher, Ashleigh Maljevac, Claudia Symington, Jonah Pezet, Rory Stephen, Bailey Shiach-Wise, Jake O’Brien and Tom Starling.
The Central Coast Junior Oztag presentation day will be held on Saturday, March 3, at Wyong Leagues Club at 3pm.
The Senior State Cup is also coming up with Central Coast fi elding a strong contingent of teams at this tournament also.
Rugby 7s for Year 7s is a new
school competition on the Central Coast open to boys in Year 7.
Playing a modifi ed version of Rugby 7s which is suitable for all players, teams will compete in the Jesse Parahi Cup.
Jesse attended Kincumber High School and represented CHS, NSW and Australian Schoolboys in rugby union.
He played junior rugby for Avoca Beach Rugby Union Football Club and is now a member of the Australian Rugby 7s team.
There are currently 13 schools (16 teams) from all over the Central Coast participating in this event which equates to approximately 200 students.
Support for this competition comes from the NSW Department of
Education and Training, the Central Coast Junior Rugby Union, Central Coast Rugby Union Referees Association, and the local junior rugby clubs on the Coast.

Central Coast M a r i n e r s
custodian Mathew Ryan has received his fi rst full call up to the Qantas Socceroos.
The outstanding young goalkeeper was picked by German mentor Holger Osieck for the teams’ FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifi er against Saudi Arabia at AAMI Park on Wednesday, February 29.
Ryan’s time in camp with the Qantas Socceroos will provide him the invaluable opportunity to learn from Fulham FC and long time National Team shot-stopper Mark Schwarzer.
With a strong mix of European, Asian and Hyundai A-League-based players, Osieck said he was pleased he would get the chance to run his eye over some new inclusions, including Ryan, before selecting his team to take the park on Wednesday night at AAMI Park.
“This match is as important as any match we play to further build on what we have achieved so far,”
said Osieck.“Each match we play
is a chance for players to prove themselves and their position in the squad.
“The players included from the Hyundai A-League will get a closer look throughout the camp and I will make up my mind if I play
them from our sessions.”The Qantas Socceroos
will assemble in Melbourne from Sunday before their fi nal Group D match against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, February 19, at AAMI Park.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) can also advise that due to a FIFA
ruling both matches in Group D will kick-off simultaneously at 8.30pm AEDT.
The Qantas Socceroos are currently at the top of Group D with maximum points from their opening fi ve matches followed by Saudi Arabia in second place then Oman and Thailand.
