There are interesting developments to report

fromthedigital librariesfrontier.Thefirstdigital

onlypublic library,BiblioTech,willpilot inBexar

Countyinautumnofthisyear.

The libraryisdesignedforthedigitalageandwill

offerabout10,000ebookstostartwith.Accessis

alsoprovided

to

desktop,

laptop

and

tablet

computersaswellasstudyspaces,meetingrooms

and a designated interactive childrens area.

Patronscaneitherborrowereadersorbringtheir

own (see press release for further details). No

details have been released as to which ebook

distribution service will be recruited, but 3M

CloudLibrarycouldbeaviablecontenderforthe

provision of the necessary technical

infrastructure. Thedriverof this initiative, Judge

NelsonW.Wolf regards thebookless librarynot

as an exclusive alternative but rather as an

experimental addon to the traditional public

libraryservice.

A comparative example within the academic

librarycontextwouldbeDrexelsLibraryLearning

Terrace (a bookless and flexible learning space

that includes computers providing access to the

schools digital library resources near where

graduates live and eat on campus; seeHoward,

2011). In essence, Drexels Learning Terrace

providesa libraryand studyenvironment that is

decentralisedacrossthecampus.

Introducing a bookless library service to the

general public, rather than the techsavvy

student, isamore complex storyaltogether.For

BiblioTech A Public Librarywithout Books

example,challenges

revolve

around

the

creation of an easily accessible technical

environment that will make interaction

(retrieval andborrowing etc.)withelectronic

books a straight forward and pleasant

experience. Another issue is that of digital

rights management as the business model

shifts from content ownership to content

licensing, i.e. ebooks are not always owned

whenpurchasedbylibraries.

Anotherchallenge

is

the

potential

for

limited

discoveryofebookcontentaslibrarieswanta

single, easytouse, easytosearch platform:

manyplatformsoffertoolittleinteroperability

(see for example Overdrive, 3M, ProQuest,

EBSCO).Also in need of consideration is the

limitations for interlibrary loan opportunities

duetopotentialoperationallimitationssetby

ebookvendors.
