This presentation commences with the 1600s and tells their story, in part, through a collection of historical artifacts. These artifacts contain images, engravings, and literature outlining America’s development. The collection also shows how African Americans passed the lessons and folklore of their own destiny on to their children.

Celebrate Black History The Library Is Open!Come in and see the newly designed Freeport Memorial Library. The lower-level renovation is complete, and all of our materials are now available. Additionally, in response to your requests, we have increased our Wi-Fi capability by adding additional access points throughout the building. This has increased our signal well beyond our doors. The entire renovation has been done with you, our patrons, in mind. New York State Construction Grant funding in the amount of $225,000 helped to make it all possible. The entire construction project was funded without having to raise any additional tax dollars. We appreciate your patience throughout this process, and we hope to see you at our Grand Reopening on Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., which is also the beginning of National Library Week. Computer CornerIn Memoriam: Mildred Joseph, 1914-2013by Regina G. Feeney and Cynthia J. Krieg

Mildred Joseph had three loves: music, chocolate, and the Freeport Memorial Library. No one has given more to the Library than the late Mrs. Joseph. For years, Library concerts and lectures, enjoyed by thousands, were sponsored by this devoted patron. Born in Baldwin, Mildred Miner Joseph inherited her love of music from her grandfather, a Russian immigrant and accomplished violinist. When Mildred was five years old, she began piano lessons. Knowing she had a sweet tooth, her grandfather used chocolate to entice her to practice. As a young girl, Mildred earned money by giving piano lessons. Later she was hired by local movie theaters to play musical scores for silent movies. She and her best friend, Belle Sylvester, performed together at the 1935 World’s Fair. Mildred received a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi College and her master’s from Columbia University. She taught fourth grade at the Shubert School in Baldwin. In 1942, Mildred married Dr. Rudolph Joseph and moved to Freeport. While raising her family, Mildred became an active member of the local arts community. She helped support the Classical Concert Series at the Freeport Memorial Library. One of her favorite performers was Fulbright Award winner Kevin Maynor. She paid for him to perform at the Library five times. Mildred never missed a concert chosen by the Library’s Music Advisory Committee, which she also supported. In addition to musical programs, Mildred underwrote the popular Current Events in Perspective programs with Professor Michael D’Innocenzo-Libresco of Hofstra University. People from all over Nassau County come to Freeport to participate in these lively discussions of current events. Mildred also involved herself with political causes, such as Physicians for Social Responsibility, which is dedicated to the eradication of nuclear weapons. Her husband, Dr. Rudolph Joseph, served as the police surgeon for the Village of Freeport. In a time before 911 emergency services, Dr. Joseph was often called to the scene of an accident day or night. In his family practice, he made house calls and never turned anyone away who needed help. He died in 2000.Mildred and her husband were devoted to their family, friends, and their community. Mildred died in March 2013.
