Michael HardisonGetting Involved in the Community the UNCP Way

When it comes to giving back to the community no event covers this better at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke than the UNCP Day of Service. The UNCP Day of Service is a yearly event at UNCP were students can volunteer through the Community and Civic Engagement program and help out different parts of the community around the Pembroke and Lumberton areas.

This year’s turn out for the UNCP Day of Service was huge considering the fact that it was really cold, damp, windy and rainy day. Unfortunately, there were no regular student volunteers this year due to the weather but that didn’t stop UNCP’s 50 plus fraternity members from different Greek organization from coming out and getting involved with the UNCP Day of Service.

One of the services that these UNCP did to help out the community on this rainy day was plant flowers in empty field behind the Place Apartments to give the community something beautiful to look forward this spring while people are driving by on the highway.

Other events that these volunteers took part in involved taking in and packing donated food from the community in store houses not far from campus. Some, of the other services that these volunteers had the opportunity to do thanks to the UNCP Day of Service involved entertaining the elder at local retirement homes and feeding the poor or homeless at local churches.

Giving back is just one way of being part of the college experience and thanks to the UNCP Day of Service UNCP students can truly give back to the community.
